Newcastle 1-1 Aston Villa

  • Goals: Jamaal Lascelles (£4.2m)
  • Own goals: Ciaran Clark (£4.5m)
  • Assists: Jacob Murphy (£4.9m) | Ollie Watkins (£6.6m)
  • Bonus points: Murphy x3, Matt Targett x2 (£5.0m), Martin Dúbravka x1 (£4.8m), Lascelles x1

U WAT?

Owners of Ollie Watkins (£6.6m) owners suffered yet another typically frustrating outing as Aston Villa drew 1-1 with Newcastle.

The forward found the back of the net in the closing stages of a dull game at St. James’ Park only for the Premier League Goal Accreditation Panel to adjudged it as a Ciaran Clark (£4.5m) own goal.

Watkins is now six Premier League matches without a goal to call his own and his general contribution on Friday night highlighted Jack Grealish‘s (£7.5m) absence even more.

Villa were not helped in their exertions by a first-half injury to Bertrand Traoré (£5.9m) who suffered rib and hip damage after an unfortunate collision with an advertising board.

“He’s got a whack on the rib and the hip. It was a blow for him to go off as he’s one of our most creative players without Jack on the pitch.” – Dean Smith

Not only did Traoré’s withdrawal leave his team-mates somewhat in the lurch, his replacement Anwar El Ghazi (£5.3m) was more selfish than Watkins owners would have liked, registering a high volume of shots in the final third that might have been better off as passes to a team-mate.

Aston Villa’s Blank Gameweek 29 fixture against Spurs is one of just eight matches in that round and has acted as a backdrop for investment in their assets of late, or continued persistence with them even with Grealish out of the picture.

Dean Smith is “hopeful” his key midfielder can be ready in time to face Spurs but based on recent performances, it is hard to be too excited about their attacking options in Blank Gameweek 29 if he were to lose his fitness race.

STAY ON TARGETT

Friday night was also a frustrating one for owners of Matt Targett (£5.0m) and anyone invested in the Aston Villa defence.

He put in the cross for Watkins’ second-half goal only to lose his assist when the own goal was given.

Then in the dying embers of stoppage time, Jamaal Lascelles (£4.2m) wiped out his clean sheet.

Despite losing out on a potential double-figure haul, Targett still managed to cling onto two bonus points, enough to offer mild consolation.

It means Targett has scored four points or more in six of his last seven away matches, thanks to four clean sheets, one assist and three bonus.

The left-back was also involved in free-kicks with Grealish and Traoré off the pitch. As a result, Targett finished Friday night joint-top for key passes at St. James’ Park with a total of three.

Ezri Konsa (£4.6m) came close to converting one of his free-kicks in the opening period so it will be worth looking out for further involvement in set pieces for Targett.

Newcastle United XI (4-2-3-1): Dúbravka; Dummett, Clark, Lascelles, Krafth (Manquillo 83′); Hayden (Carroll 88′), Shelvey; Fraser (Murphy 79′), Willock, Joelinton; Gayle.

Aston Villa XI (4-3-3): Martínez; Targett, Mings, Konsa, El Mohamady; J Ramsey (Sanson 59′), D Luiz, McGinn; Trézéguet (Barkley 68′), Watkins, B Traoré (El Ghazi 22′).

Hey guys, have 2 FT going into GW29 which would give me 10 starters. I can WC in 31 to clean up my squad as the fixtures turn.

Does Cancelo & Salah > Andersen & Son look the best option? I'd only be losing 0.1 on Salah where as I'd lose 0.5 on Bruno.

    Martinez
    Coufal - Konsa - Dallas
    Lingard - Raphinha
    Kane - Bamford

    Pope - Bruno - Salah - Gundo - Stones - Cancelo - DCL

Have to smile at De Bruyne bandwagon ! The last time he returned sufficiently for a player of his price was the away game at Chelsea when he played at Centre Forward. In GW27 against Southampton he played as a centre forward again. These two game weeks aside, his returns have been less than ordinary for a player of his price.

If it means an extra player and free’s budget + fits with long term plan then yes

Even if they only get a 2 pointer you only lost -2 and any return means you’re in proffit for that move in isolation and that’s before factoring in like I say freeing up cash or getting rid of a player who’s lost his place or other

I have double city defence at the moment with 9 players for 29 and 2FT... Only FH in the bank...

Initial plan was to get a Brighton defender in for cancelo but now I'm wondering if stones to coufal is a good move given their form and fixtures and more importantly fighting for the top 4....

    Looking at a defence of

Shaw Rudiger stones/coufal Dallas veltman till the end of the season

Would you persist with Stones or get coufal?

Has anyone else just gotten used to losing out on points recently?

I own Targett and Martinez and pretty much just shrugged when I saw that last goal/own goal situation.

Not sure what it is but I've been hovering between 85k and 100k OR for about 5-6 weeks and lots of small outcomes keep going against me, to the point now where if I lose out in a situation I'm just thinking "oh well, there's another one".

Looking forward to this season just finishing at this point.

Obviously by hovering around a similar rank I appreciate I don't have that much to complain about, but this current games remaining/only certain players being in form/ everyone generally having the same players is just making FPL a bit boring.
Everyone in my paid mini league top 10 basically has the same core group of players so it's incredibly hard to gain any ground

Yeah, as I mentioned in my reply above, I'm not panicking or getting upset, I'm just fairly bored of treading water.

+1. Would be more surprised if they got the CS, even in injury-time.

Well went from 30k to 200k last 10 GWs going without Bruno,Kane,Gundo

All of them killed it and my differential did nothing, went with Trossard now and dont care much with 100pts of top 10k

It was easy top 10k if i wasnt acting too cleaver

Fully understand and feel for you. I went from 80k to 130k last few GWs. I know not too much but it is obviously not an exciting achievement.

I gamble on not having KDB and Bruno, but on Kane, Son, Salah etc. Hope not getting too worse after gw29.

Which players are essential on a FH for GW29?

The only essential players are those with high ownership so you don't lose out if they end up doing well. Apart from Kane there aren't even many in great form

I'd cover Kane Bamford Son and Raphinha personally. Then have fun. Areola, Veltman, Dunk, Adarabioyo, Auba, Bale, Maupay/Antonio

I was thinking essential for GW29 as Kane, son/bale, lingard,& Leeds

I think today might finally be the day Havertz emerges as the FPL option we hoped he would become.

He has by far and away the most potential in that squad as an FPL asset given regular game time in a system that suits him.

Interesting that Tuchel said he doesn't want him to be behind the ball. That sort of thing makes it sound like he could be involved in every attack

Exactly. Frank came nowhere close to getting the best out of him, lets see if Tuchel can do better.

Is this 8 enough for 29? No WC so don't want to load up on too many. Could take a hit for Sterling to Bale/Auba?

    Areola
    Coufal Dunk
    Son Raphinha
    Bamford Kane Watkins

    A) Those 8 are fine
    B) Do Sterling to Bale / Auba for -4

I enjoy not owning Bruno. With EO over 100% i would want him to blank anyway. Have to try something different to gain OR.

That only hurts if he hauls, not owning him is twice as painful if he hauls.

True. Last week was awful (got Son), but decided to just rip the plaster straight off than 1000 cuts of EO over 100%
