SOUTHAMPTON 1-2 BRIGHTON

  • Goals: Che Adams (£5.8m) | Lewis Dunk (£4.9m), Leandro Trossard (£5.7m)
  • Assists: Ryan Bertrand (£5.0m) | Pascal Gross (£5.8m), Danny Welbeck (£5.5m)
  • Bonus: Trossard x3, Adams x2, Dunk x1

DEEP BURN AS DAN DOWN

Budget Brighton defender Dan Burn (£4.2m) did not reappear for the second half in Sunday’s win over Southampton due to a hamstring injury.

On Burn, manager Graham Potter explained:

We lost Dan at half time with a tight hamstring. So we had to adapt and I thought we did it really well.

A little bit too early to say [on the severity]. It was more tightness and we’re hoping more precautionary, so we’ll see how it settles down over the next day or so.

Those who drafted in the colossal defender for Blank Gameweek 29 will find out next week if they’ve been burned, while Free Hitters probably have one less budget option to consider.

SLAM DUNK THE FUNK

Lewis Dunk (£4.9m) will be under heavy consideration for those using the ‘Free Hit’ chip, however.

The Brighton skipper rose into space to jam a header home from a Pascal Gross (£5.8m) corner after 16 minutes.

Dunk’s aerial prowess should see him feature in many a Free Hit team, though the situation is not as clear for other FPL managers.

The Seagulls play away to Manchester United and Chelsea between Gameweeks 30 and 32, with those fixtures sandwiching a visit from Everton.

Next week’s match-up does bode well, however.

Only Crystal Palace (19) – who have played an extra fixture – conceded more headed attempts than Brighton’s Blank Gameweek 29 opponents Newcastle (17) between Gameweeks 24 and 27.

THREE-CHE

Che Adams (£5.8m) made it three goals in as many games, volleying past Robert Sanchez (£4.5m) from a Ryan Bertrand (£5.0m) knockdown.

Southampton have clashes with Burnley (H), West Brom (a) and Crystal Palace (H) before a blank in Gameweek 33.

Their outstanding match from that round of fixtures, away to Spurs, could also give the Saints a Double Gameweek before Blank Gameweek 33; though nothing is confirmed in that case.

So despite another lacklustre performance in Gameweek 28, Southampton assets could be on the menu after the international break.

However, Ralph Hasenhuttl delivered a fairly scathing verdict on his team after full-time that will not promote confidence in the Saints for the time being.

“They are fighting for relegation and we think we are safe – but I think we should pay attention because when we play like this we will not win a lot of games, that is for sure.

“We had a not so good start. We came back a bit better, with a few chances but in the second half, the opponent wanted it more and we have to be self critical about it because it was by far one of the worst games we have played this season.

“It is time to work on a few basic fundamentals in the next weeks. The second goal gave them a lift. After we did not have a solution, only one chance at the end. But in total it was not enough to deserve a point today. We see that our game is far away from what it has been this season.

“The way we tried to play was far away from what I wanted. You could see, it was chaotic. There was no plan and no clear idea during the final 30 minutes.

“We have to work on this. We have shown in the past that when we have time to work on things, we can come back to the highest level.” – Ralph Hasenhuttl

POTTER WORKS HIS MAGIC

Burn’s withdrawal saw Graham Potter make an unorthodox substitution, with forward Andi Zeqiri (£5.0m) brought on to play at left wing-back.

That shifted Pascal Gross (£5.8m) to right wing-back, allowing Leandro Trossard (£5.7m) to play behind the striking duo of Danny Welbeck (£5.5m) and Neal Maupay (£6.1m).

In the 57th minute, link-up play between Adam Lallana (£6.2m) and Welbeck allowed the latter to slip Trossard in behind the Southampton defence.

The Belgian made no mistake as he slotted past Forster to put Brighton in the lead for a second time, an advantage which they would not relinquish.

“He’s an important player. He’s experienced, has great quality on the ball and we need him as a team. He’s added that extra bit for us and we are really happy to have him.” – Leandro Trossard on Adam Lallana

“I thought it was a deserved victory. Full credit to the players, they had to adapt. Second half we got a really good goal and when we had to defend we defended against a really good side that plays with huge intensity.” – Graham Potter

On Lallana, Potter added:

I thought he was fantastic today. He takes the ball in tight areas, links the play up really well and uses his voice to organise the team. He’s a really important player and person for us. Really delighted for him – that’s his second 90 minutes, so we need to recover him and get him ready for the weekend.

Southampton XI (4-2-2-2): Forster; Bertrand, Vestergaard, Bednarek, Walker-Peters; Ward-Prowse, Diallo; Minamino (Redmond 65′), Armstrong (N’Lundulu 87′); Tella (Djenepo 68′), Adams.

Brighton & Hove Albion (3-4-1-2): Sanchez; Dunk, Veltman, White; Burn (Zeqiri 46′), Bissouma, Lallana, Gross; Trossard (Moder 85′); Maupay, Welbeck (Propper 76′).

Son-Owners are you shifting? Considering losing him and getting him back in GW34 (SHU) after GW33 Blank (no FH).

Considering DCL, Son & Keane -> Lacazette, Lookman & Dunk (-4) (Dunk will probably become Dallas in GW30).

    Cheers

If I get rid this week it'd probably have to be for a hit and I'm not sure if it's worth it. I don't know if the fact I'm wildcarding in 31 means it makes more or less sense to sell him now tbh...

    Bottomed repost

Thought experiment for those on FH and chasing in any form

Count the number of goals your attackers have scored over the last 3/4
Count the number of cs and goals you have from defence
Ponder how many other teams you see around you with the chance of going 5 at the back
Look at the defenders available who have realistic goal threat

    1. Vlekz
        5 years, 23 days ago

It's a viable strategy overall too for those who are chasing. I have gone 5 premiums(including premium gk) in my main team as well.
Teams are not attacking the games with their normal intensity (lack of fans plus so many games)

          Agreed

Have been intending to go 4-5-1/4-4-2 anyway. Just need to see how those DGWs to fall and whether it's worth playing budget attackers against SHU.

SHU have a really kind run in and if you want to attack them then you need players like Zaha and Wilson

Thoughts on wildcarding to following squad this week? I think it's a good combo of long term planning with Liverpool players and Neto, but also included best options for 29.

        Ederson Sanchez
        Robbo Cresswell Rudiger Cancelo Dallas
        Bruno Gundogan Neto Jota Raphina
        Kane Watkins Antonio

1.7itb (enough for Antonio to DCL if eve-avl double.

          I don't like it personally.

Rotation headaches, expensive bench, few captaincy options.

If owning Kane Bruno & Gunda isnt having enough captaincy options I don’t know what is!

Good strong squad and I think that a strong bench is required for the last bit of the season due to rotations/risks.

Sounds like Camzy just had a bad GW

No. It's because it lacks flexibility. If you want Salah or KdB or Auba to come in, this team structure makes it very difficult. It's not doable in two moves.

            3. michaelington
              • 16 Years
              5 years, 23 days ago

Gundo is no longer an option for captaincy for me with KDB back. Also, if you look at their fixtures coming up, theres going to be heavy rotation.

I would wildcard after 29, this week will be a low scoring week and you can assess after the IB. With injuries and self isolating, this could give you an advantage over everyone else.

          Like the defence idea

But dubious about Robbo. I WCed early in expectation of Liverpool fixture swing and they entirely goofed it. I'd get Stones ahead of Ederson and Mendy in.

If Stones is benched no problem on price and he's the value option there and has easily the best ppg.

Gundo is a very defensive play if you look at his returns over the last 7 matches not game weeks.

Robbo is mainly because of fixtures and potential, could go double Chelsea but would like some attacking threath.

Had a lovely cameo off the bench v Villa. Was watching it, looked very good. But probably only good enough for a cameo. Can be easy to impress in the last 15 mins against tired opponents.

        The best laid plans...

With Son and Burn now injured and potentially out of GW29, what to do with this motley crew? I have 2 FT's and £1.4m ITB.

        Martinez* - Fodder
        Burn* - Reguillon* - White* - Dias - Stones
        Salah - Bruno - Gundo - Son* - Raphinha*
        Kane* - DCL - Maja*

Cheers. Definitely considering Son > Bale move. Wondering whether Burn > Cresswell might have more long-term appeal than Tierney though.

United double defence being considered here from 31

Shaw is a shoo in for me anyway. But AWB and Maguire are both uber nailed and relatively cheap and that's 4 cs on the trot with most of their bad run gone. They do of course have a great record in negative fixtures anyway.

I think I can see United as having almost the better defensive fixture than City in 31 🙂

Shaw is looking a must-have, but would probably consider a Chelsea defender over AWB and Maguire.

Looking at Mendy in goal here and Azpi too

            Theoretically this

            Mendy
            Stones Azpi Magurie/AWB Shaw cheap

You expect them to keep a clean sheets? Looks like only 3-4 CSs are possible

They just blanked City and WH!

More than 3/4 is much more than possible. They have 6 0-0s on the season already. Mostly in negative fixtures.

Looked at another way 3 of the top 10 defenders in the season come from United. There is low rotation risk and their worst fixtures will be gone by 31 bar Spurs and Liverpool - both of which are highly plausible 0-0s on form so far.

Even with blanks for them in those two they should be high up on the agenda anyway imo.

Chelsea is the option but it's not necessarily mutually exclusive when you factor in Mendy. Much safer starts and - Alonso apart - greater goal threat hence their good returns on the season

Both with Stones and Mendy/Azpi is what I'm looking at.

May not go here of course but thinking generally I'd prefer to use FTs on getting a strong defence than chasing non-existent attacking returns

Got 2FTs, any ideas what are the best moves to do?

          Current team for the double:

          Areola
          Coufal Dallas Veltman
          Reed Son*
          Kane Bamford*

subs: Martinez Gundogan Cancelo Stones Bruno Salah DCL

Lads I capped Cancelo for the DGW

At least I kept him for this week (wish I hadn't looked at my team and kept the (C) on him)

Lol, I forgot to confirm my captain for this week, so it fell to my captain from last week.

Wish it was Cancelo - but it wasn't, it was Gundy (Kane VC)

Right now I have 7 BGW29 players with 2 FT.
only have a Wildcard left and my initial plan is to use those 2 FT to field 9 players and Wildcard on GW30 or 31.

but now Son, Bamford, and Bertrand Traore injured. so if those 3 ruled out, I can only field 6 players.

          so, the questions are,
          1. Any update on those 3 injuries?
          2. Should I use the Wildcard?

I will definitely wait until closer to the deadline, but just want to hear some initial thoughts on this. cheers.

Is it though? If you FH you will still get all those injured players back in GW30. I still think FH 33 is the best time to use it.

With injured players, I mean the likes of Burn, Bamford and Son which a lot of people have (at least the latter two). I have none of those so my team is looking in good shape for gw. Also have Wildcard in tact to help me through gw 33.

The big thing is the 2 week break after GW29/before GW30 - The landscape will likely look very different by that time, with players jetting off into international Covid bubbles etc

GW30-38 will probably see a lot of shifting around in the ranks

          Currently have 6 (+2 injured) for GW29:

          Martinez
          Dallas Adarabioyo
          Bale Raphinha Son*
          Watkins Bamford*

(McCarthy Robertson Cancelo Stones Salah Gundogan DCL)

£1.9m ITB and 2FTs.... initial thoughts are Robbo + DCL > Dunk + Kane
