We assess the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) appeal of Rayan Aït Nouri (£4.5m) in our second pre-season instalment of Great Expectations, a series of articles on players who have shown glimpses of promise and who are potentially on the cusp of a breakout FPL campaign.

All stats and heatmaps used in this piece are taken from our Premium Members Area.

FPL price reveal and launch reaction from three-time top 200 finisher Lateriser 1

THE TRANSFER

Aït Nouri became a permanent Wolverhampton Wanderers player earlier this month after a promising campaign on loan at Molineux last season.

The Frenchman, who arrived on a five-year deal with the option of a sixth, is Bruno Lage’s fourth signing as Wolves new head coach.

On the deal, technical director Scott Sellars said:

“We think Rayan is a great signing for the football club. He proved last season that he’s a very talented player, with lots of potential – I thought he did well and kicked on towards the end of the season. He’s a player who is only going to get better, he’s a good boy, who works hard, and settled in well here.

We’ve used the loan before buying approach well in the past, with people like Jonny and Raul [Jimenez]. I think it’s a great way for both parties to get to know each other, to see if they can adapt and enjoy English football, and we get a chance to have a look first, and see if a deal can be done.

In Rayan’s case, he got a lot of minutes because both Jonny and Marcal suffered injury problems last season, so he had lots of games in the Premier League to show his quality.

At his age, he’s got a lot to learn still, a lot to work on, and I’m sure with us he’ll develop. He has great quality going forward, we all remember his goal on his debut, so he’s got a lot going for him, as well as areas to develop, like all players.”

The question is: can Aït Nouri now kick on and become one of the best budget defenders FPL?

2020/21 REVIEW

It didn’t take long for Aït Nouri to make his mark at Wolves, as he opened the scoring after just 18 minutes of his debut in a 2-0 win over Crystal Palace back in October.

In his 23 appearances that followed, the youngster showed plenty of intent to get forward and provide an attacking threat, both as a left-back and left wing-back.

Above: Rayan Aït Nouri’s touch heatmap 2020/21

However, it was in the final nine games of the season that he truly established himself.

With Jonny (£4.5m) needing surgery on another ACL problem and Fernando Marçal (£4.5m) on the sidelines too, Aït Nouri produced solid performances as Wolves secured back-to-back 1-0 wins over Fulham, when he started taking set-pieces, and Sheffield United.

He then impressed against Brighton and Hove Albion and West Bromwich Albion, as his confidence and stature in the team grew.

Statistically, amongst all defenders (with a 1,000-minute threshold), he ranked 11th for crosses and second for take-ons per 90 minutes:

Double wolves defence is an interesting one same with double leicester defence. Certainly different how come you fancy both of them? rest looks fine tho.

I guess it’s my philosophy. If I back a team I go all in. Well Leicester I fancy, I did a hot topic and they start fast. I think the fixtures are good except gameweek 4, which is when Wolves have Brentford away. I like Wolves defensively, and I like the wingbacks in the new manager’s system (they’re super important). Dunk’s fixtures also get worse as Wolves gets better. It’s a risk of course but I just like the price of their defenders for a team proven to be decent defensively. I don’t like Liverpool defence that much and the City assets and Chelsea assets that I want don’t return until later.

            Cheers man. Yeah Sanchez + Dunk/ Castagne + Fofana/ Semedo + Ait-Nouri.

It’s worked for me in the past, and I see many having Brighton players + Fofana in their teams so I’ll just go one step further. Wolves is the only risk.

It's a good team. Keep one eye on Luke Thomas. If he can make the FB position his own then he'll be a much better pick than Fofana(great defender but just not for FPL)

I’m going double United and double Liverpool defense. 1, because their fixtures are ace and 2, they can get assist too. So I like your thinking but mine is better.

      Watkins / Toney

Think i'm settled on a team (for now lol). Kane and Lamptey not being available changed my team around a lot:

    Sanchez
    TAA Shaw James Veltman
    Salah Bruno Mahrez Raphinha
    Wilson Toney

    Begovic Ayling Brownhill Obafemi

    - Mahrez seems a pretty risky pick but happy to start with him and do have 1.0 ITB to move to Son / Sancho easily should I want to.
    - Obviously Shaw will be moved out for someone else if he won't be fit to start the season.
    - James might be a rotation risk but think he should be okay early on in the season and do want to tap into that CHE def.

Never said White is overvalued. Only that comparing their prices, Varane is a steal.

White has huge potential plus is younger like you rightly pointed out. He can become a star but really not sure if Arteta is the one who can turn him into a worldie defender. I may be wrong here as I don't follow Arsenal so closely.

I agree that it does seem questionable by Arsenal to keep sogning young CBs without any evidence that they have a coach capable of getting the best out of them

Exactly. At some point, potential needs to be transformed into caliber and performances especially when the stakes are so high. But really which of the top coaches would like to sign for Arsenal? I'm not sure many will jump at the prospect.

so true, i'm a Gooner and have seen over the last few years some obviously flawed thinking/actions in the transfer market and contracts handed to the wrong players etc, some woeful players rewarded with massive contracts, some pretty good players or ones with potential just flogged off on the cheap or not given the chance, letting Martinez go last season a prime example, most of us could see he was outperforming Leno by a mile, and now there's talk about Arteta wanting to replace Leno, we already had the right guy playing for our club who had proved himself while Leno was injured - i think the whole transfer and contract decision making by the club (with the odd exception) stinks of incompetency

Arsenal shopping in the wrong market here.

White is quality but overpriced in today's market looked at in European terms. Brighton are - with their unlimited overdraft from their owner - one club that have no need to compromise on price. Plenty of clubs are in financial doodoo thanks to COVID and need to move on assets especially if they need to buy.

    Tinkered to a 4-3-3

    Sanchez - (4.0)
    TAA - Targett - AWB - Keane - (White)
    Salah - Son - Mahrez - (Brownhill) - (Gilmour)
    Watkins - DCL - Bamford

If Sancho takes off can swap Son > Sancho

Wilson more of a talisman in terms of goal involvement but West Ham score more goals overall.

Both have hamstrings made of cheese strings.

They're both good picks - comes down to personal preference.

Arsenal Spurs may be worth exploring - they rotate home and away of course and look likely to have 4.5 5.0 options that could work. Most of the good ones are away though. First 8 are this

      1. brent (A)
      2. wolves (S)
      3. WATFORD (S)
      4. palace (S) NORWICH (A)

This is the best all round team you can get, two questions.

    A. Sanchez or Bachmann
    B. Will Grealish be ready for GW1

    Sanchez
    TAA Digne Coufal
    Salah Bruno Grealish Raphina
    Iheanacho Wilson Toney

Compared to the likes of Buendia and premium defenders (Robbo, Shaw, Chilwell, etc. I’m on the fence with Grealish at his price point.

I owned Grealish for much of last season and didn’t even want to drop him for Gundo. But with another creator in midfield now, who’s also on set pieces, I’m not liking 8m for Jack

      Very nice team

Grealish is one of those that make or break how I set up week 1. Where will his mind be week 1? I'd go Bachmann as at now.

Is keeping Sarr on my bench until GW4 madness?

I'm happy with my current side & can't find anywhere I want to upgrade.

He rotates so nicely with my 3 defenders (play 2 each GW)...

    1) Webster (bur) & Cash (wat)
    2) Webster (WAT) & Cash (NEW)
    3) Llorente (bur) & Cash (BRE)
    4) Sarr (WOL) & Webster (bre)

I think it's alright if you can't make use of the 1.5 saving anywhere. I think Watford will beat Villa day one, in front of their home fans, I'd rather play Sarr than Cash in that area one personally.

What do you guys think about this “heavy midfield” draft?

    Sanchez
    TAA, Nouri, Ayling, Fofana
    Salah, Son, Bruno, Havertz
    Watkins, Toney

Bench is crap tbh. But 0.5 in the bench so I can put a 4.5 defender on the bench as well.

    Cheers!

Everything I’ve heard from Rafa in pre season and watching the training clips, it’s all about getting the ball wide and up the field ASAP, then balls into the box for the striker. Good for DCL with his heading ability and Townsends record at cross accuracy is very good say the stats.
