Fantasy Football Scout and Sky Sports Fantasy Football to join forces in 2021/22 1

Fantasy Football Scout are delighted to be partnering with Sky Sports Fantasy Football this season – bringing you even more content on the popular, free-to-enter game.

Our resident experts Luke Williams and Niall Murphy have already uploaded a two-part 2021/22 Sky season preview and will be recording every week throughout the season so you get the very best insight and advice.

This week, Niall – who has finished 3rd, 15th, 17th and 42nd in a stellar career – reveals his first draft and strategy to picking a Sky team for the crucial first three Gameweeks of the season, before the Overhaul kicks in.

Pre-Overhaul Strategy

Before we get into the detail of my team, I believe there are a few pretty fundamental principles to picking a successful pre-overhaul team in Sky Fantasy Football:

1.       Forget the rest of the season

With the presence of the Overhaul – which is effectively a forced wildcard after three Gameweeks – remember, you’re only picking a team for the first few games. Even if you like the look of Teemu Pukki at 7.7m or Billy Gilmour at 6.9m, with Norwich rock bottom of the fixture ticker, you’re effectively gambling on them to score goals and dominate the ball against Liverpool, Manchester City and Leicester City. I’ll leave you to price that up with your local bookie, but it’s a punt that I’ll not be touching with a bargepole. My advice would be to avoid teams like Norwich, Leeds, Wolves and Burnley until after the Overhaul, with some exceptions, such as a cheap goalkeeper or even Raphinha (8.3m).

On the flip side, Aston Villa, Brighton, Liverpool, Manchester United and Leicester lead the way at the other end of the fixture ticker and all boast proven and good-value Sky assets.  What’s not to like?

2.       Captains are king… And one of them is probably Egyptian

Of arguably more importance in Sky than the difficulty of fixtures, is the way they fall within the Gameweek. Looking at the matches, Liverpool, Manchester United, West Ham/Leicester and Arsenal/Brentford stand out as being either optimal or required assets for early-season captaincies. This is illustrated by the very first game of the season where Thomas Frank’s newly-promoted Brentford take on Arsenal in the only game on Friday night.

Now, neither Arsenal nor Brentford have a stunning set of opening fixtures, coming in at 18th and 9th respectively in the fixture ticker, but you almost certainly want to start the season with one of their players. That’s because you are able to bank double points for simply having an asset on matchday 1 – meaning Arsenal and Brentford have an effective 4-for-3 advantage over other teams. Bruno Fernandes (11.8) and Mohamed Salah (11.9) or another Liverpool asset look favourites for the armband on at least a couple of the early-season matchdays.

3.       Regular starters or bust

Put simply, you only have three Gameweeks to amass points. If there are doubts over a player’s fitness or security of starts after pre-season, at this stage of the campaign, I would encourage you to body swerve. The last thing you want to be doing is picking a player who either misses the first two or three games, leaving you pointless, or who forces your hand to make transfers in Gameweek 1, with only a limited number of weeks to compensate for the use of a transfer.

Of course, injuries happen, and my advice would be to consider each swap early doors on merit. I’ll give you an example. Two seasons ago, Alisson was crocked in the very first game of the season against Norwich. Transferring him out at that stage gave 3 Gameweeks for another goalkeeper to gain enough points to justify a transfer. I assessed that to be worth the move and his replacement, Jordan Pickford, kept two clean sheets out of three. Great. Now, if the injury happened in Gameweek 2, I’d be less inclined to throw a transfer at it, and would barely consider it if in Gameweek 3.

Need to drop one of these. Ideally a 0.5 downgrade should do it.

Yeah, I agree. Regulion, Tierney, Coufal, Firpo etc. are all good alternatives to Shaw if you want to shave 0.5M from your budget.

Might change here and there. Can shuffle the 7.5 m forwards. But the structure will be the same.

Also Digne in a 442 or a 6.0 midfielder in a 352 is to be decided.

I dont have United attack because i dont think theyl be at their best come GW1. So Mahrez is just a place holder with 0.5 ITB for Sancho (GW3)

tot,NOR are decent fixtures. He is on pens, and few freekicks/Corners.

Long term he is a rotation risk but ig he is fine for the first 2/3.

Do people expect him to be replaced by Firmino? Isn't it likely he'll continue to get game time and starts regardless, either in rotation or with all 4 attackers playing together? I'm not up to speed, but I thought that's what was happening last season when he was fit.

If affordable, I think its good to have a 2nd GK. Not for regular rotation, but to cover unseen circumstances as well as use 2nd GK when your first choice GK is playing vs top 6-8 teams.

For instance, we can go with Sanchez-Dubravka while treating Sanchez as first choice GK. Dubravka (LEE, wol, crp) will cover Sanchez(LEI, ARS, MCI) in GW5, 7, 9

But whenever we need cash, it's that 2nd GK spot which gets sacrificed. In the end, it will depend on whether you can afford or not.

          1. TheTinman
            • 11 Years
            5 years, 23 days ago

Personally I think this season there is plenty of affordability with the good range of mid price attackers. That's unless Kane moves which I think will stretch our budgets a bit more.

I used to always go for the 2x 4.5m as this is optimal. But then gave into the FFS idea that it's a headache and the 0.5m can be used elsewhere.

I'll have a look at fixtures on my wildcard, but to begin with I think I'll gamble on just Sanchez as I don't see myself going deep on first wildcard.

Can someone help me understand why White is not in every single draft? 4,5 who should be nailed in what probable will be a decent team defensively? Is it because of two tough games in the first three?

I don't have my spreadsheet as I'm not at home, but of all the teams in the league over the last 10 or so years arsenal are just mid table for Clean Sheets. It's also hard to tell with them just when they will keep a cleanie.

That being said, I think Gabriel Tierney and Leno are getting better and have improved the defence. Chambers looked solid at RB. Assuming White is worth the £50m and improves the defence then they could be on for a good clean sheet season this year.

The realy question is, with TAA, Shaw, Robbo, Digne, Coufal, Reguillon, Tierney etc. Do we have a power back 3 or do we have a slot open for a pair of rotating £4.5m?

He's my 4th choice as a back up for now, but when I wildcard I may downgrade from the power back 3 to the rotating 4.5m if there is someone worth upgrading to in mid or att

No goal threat. In general, if there are defenders out there with similar chances of clean sheets but also with goal threat, why get players without the goal threat? This is true whether looking at the same price bracket or otherwise. You don't have to own a 4.5m defender after all.

Aside from that, generally, I think people avoid 'doubling up', and see Tierney as much superior value, quite rightly in my opinion. Though I wouldn't be against doubling necessarily, usually.

However, at the 4.5 price, people might be looking for rotation options, and you can't rotate White with Tierney if you wanted to, and perhaps White doesn't rotate well with other popular options? You might not want to rotate him, but I personally don't want any set options in the XI week-in, week-out who look like getting 2-7 points per week. It's not enough for any price!

For me, personally, my main reason would actually be that I might want 3 Arsenal players in my team at some point, and White is unlikely to be in the top 3 of my choices, with Tierney, Saka, ESR, Pepe and who knows who else? So don't want to block myself from buying players who could be excellent value.

Not for me Deulo. Only City and Chelsea defence were good. Arsenal had 11 cleansheet and those with 10 cleansheet go down to 12th on cleansheet table. More than that though, I saw a few of their games and they looked very dodgy in games especially when Tierney was out. Will he play left in a 3 or left back?

          1. Deulofail
            • 10 Years
            5 years, 23 days ago

Defence isn't just the players looking good at the back. The whole is involved in trying to not concede goals. Arsenal/Arteta sacrificed attack for defence and that was evident in the numbers. Check out the goals conceded: shipping only 39 goals isn't a sign of a 'poor' defence.

And nor is the fact that teams with one fewer clean sheet are 12th in the clean sheet leaderboard.

While basing your opinion of Arsenal's season-long defensive form on watching just a few games is also probably not the best idea.

Besides that: Tierney isn't out, is he? So I'm not sure what your point is there. And dodgy Luiz has been replaced by White. Regardless of any individual dodginess, it doesn't seem as easy to score against Arsenal as it does against most other PL teams.

Tierney will most likely play LB most of the season, I think. I'm quite glad people think the Arsenal defence (and team) are/were poor for the last half of the season and into the new season, though. Makes them underdogs, and could allow those who watch(ed) them to capitalise in FPL.

But managers like Pep and Klopp always sign players which fit in with their ethos and style, I don’t see that with Kane. Anyhoo.

He's a ridiculously bad signing for City at £150m - I don't think they're that poorly run that they'll pay it

          Stranger things have happened though

City play with a false 9 which Kane basically is. Instead of just Son running through there will be 3 of them running through. Couple that with Kanes finishing abilities and he could top goals and assists again this year

An excellent goalscorer, that also links in with team play & provides assists. Sounds perfect.

With Citeh having most of the ball, he shouldn't have to work as hard. Better squad, means more rests. Should improve, injury-wise.

To flip that around. What about him (assuming price isn't an issue) doesn't suit them?

I just don’t feel he fits in with their style of play.
        I can’t see his
Injury woes getting any better as he ages.
Also, do bare in mind that I might just completely fail to understand the attraction.

Still a wait for me, Nuno played some of the most boring negative defensive football I've ever seen for large parts of his final seasons

      1. GreennRed
        • 14 Years

That's because he had little alternative as his attacking options were depleted.

        1. @persecuted_by_mods
          5 years, 23 days ago

Simply not true, the teams he was facing most of the time had far inferior players and even when his best players were fit he was mind numbingly boring and defensive the majority of times. For me he's lost the benefit of the doubt from the first season with how long that turgid football went on, still attacking points in a defense first and counter style as Mou proved with Kane and Son but just wary

Agree - watching Nuno teams the last 24 months has been torture, I lost an awful lot of respect for him the more I watched Wolves

Obviously did a great job to get them promoted & into Europe etc

But I've said since he was appointed that stylistically him & Spurs are a match made in hell - what with the fans' delusions that they are somehow entitled to play like 70's Brazil at all times

Nuno & Benitez & their clubs are two powderkegs that wont need much of a spark to blow their whole seasons to bits

Without Jota and Jimenez? He kept them in Premier League. Not his job to entertain.

New club, fresh start. Can be just as attacking again as his early Wolves days. Hard to know how he will do. Similar with Rafa.
