I’ll start with a short story. This time last season, Chelsea were spending money like they were Disney and, as a fan (of Chelsea, though I do like Disney too), it was hard not to get caught up in that excitement and to want to be part of it in every way possible. Of course, for me, this included picking as many as possible in my Fantasy Premier League team and, as a result, I tripled up on Chelsea assets with Timo Werner (£9.0m), Kai Havertz (£8.5m) and Reece James (£5.5m) all featuring in my Gameweek 1 team.

Of course, Chelsea went on to become champions of Europe, thus proving me 100% correct in my beliefs and to be a person of quite unnatural foresight and wisdom. So, thanks for reading, and tune in next time when I’ll be talking ab-

Okay, while Chelsea did indeed become champions of Europe, this eventual success was not necessarily reflected in their early-season performances or the output of their players from an FPL perspective. Don’t get me wrong, they weren’t terrible by any means, even the much-maligned Timo Werner was averaging about 5.0 points per game up until Gameweek 10. The problem was, they didn’t deliver consistently, sustainably and, crucially, as much as more established players (Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) was kind enough to make this point early on and immediately punish me for not picking him with a Gameweek 1 hat-trick).

Salah

Even then, I held on to my Chelsea assets, despite their declining output and emerging line-up uncertainties. I justified this to myself by their good run of fixtures which, surely, would get them back on track. When that didn’t happen, I convinced myself that, since other people were ditching their Chelsea players, the best thing for me to do ‘strategically’ would be to hold on to them so that, when they did eventually burst into life, they would offer the best possible source of differential points, thus propelling me up the table.

Of course, the opposite happened, Chelsea assets declined further, both in terms of points output and in value, which in turn reduced my options for transferring them out. The net effect was that I’d set the foundation for what was to become my worst ever fantasy football season.

So what happened here and what can we learn from it?

    Fitting article for me...

    Alright new draft.

    Bachmann Foster
    TAA Digne Tierney Ayling Livramento
    Salah Fernandes Mahrez Raphinha Benrahma
    DCL Toney Oba

I decided if I believe that Everton are gonna be good and have Digne, I'm also banking on the fact he'll get assists by putting the ball on DCL's head. It only makes sense to either get both or neither especially with this Watkins uncertainty.

Tierney kind of rotates with Ayling. He also can play further forward on occasion and Arsenal's defense is largely underrated. White also appealing but no attacking threat so if trying to nail a defensive bandwagon, Tierney's the one.

Benrahma and Mahrez as midfield differentials with interesting price point so I can pivot smoothly (Havertz, Sancho, Son). Core of TAA, Salah, Bruno, Raphinha, Toney just in case I'm wrong and to cover the key template guys.

Feels like a decent balance of risk/reward.

        Well...

DCL > Ings is an option

I think I’m going to try and cover all 3 teams with picking one from each one
          Everton- Digne or DCL
          Villa - buendia or Ings
Westham - Bowden or Benrahma or Antonio

Just hard to decide which 3 haha

Like it I've got a similar setup atm but it's just two positions that are giving me a headache. Still not convinced by Mahrez.

I have Antonio, Sarr & Shaw over your DCL, Benrahma & Tierney.

I'm happy to give Mahrez a few weeks. We're not tied to these players forever! He has the preseason, he's a good price. He's low owned. I can pivot nicely to Sancho or Havertz after. Maybe even Son if I make some funds.

Yeah definitely he unlocks a good price point. I do want a City attacker for that Norwich game.

One important thing to keep in mind is that City will have a lot of players returning who wont possibly be match fit or up to the sharpness Pep needs. Mahrez has had a good preseason. Pep puts out a strong team against Tottenham and then come Norwich he could give the likes of Ferran Foden Bernardo a run out which could see Mahrez miss out. Of course its no use second guessing Pep.

I keep coming back to a similar looking draft too - price points weighing heavily on my mind

3-5-2 is almost locked in for me as - against the grain on here I suspect - I see more interesting options in midfield than at the back or up top - especially if you factor in the 6.0 and below types.

Biggest issue for me is whether it's overly optimistic to start with Son as a potential captain in week 3 and work on the basis it is easier to trade down than up.

Currently favour Havertz but Lukaku could make that a one week shot. Going with him opens up a slightly different set of players such as Greenwood Barnes and Grealish without messing around with funds too much

    Best combo?

    a) Bruno/7.5/Buendia
    b) Son/Sancho/Buendia
    c) Sancho/Grealish/Havertz

    1. Camzy
      • 16 Years

      A.

Last season we trusted new signings like Havertz and Werner and look where that got us. Couple that with United being unsettled preseason and Sancho not playing a single minute yet and I think it's too big of a risk to think he can cover the sheer points force of Bruno.

A, but B is good if that is your only risk. People's rationale for avoiding Sancho seems to be, well Havertz and Werner, which is stupid. They had to adapt to a new culture, a new country, Sancho doesn't, he only has to adapt a new team. He's an intelligent player, playing alongside Bruno and (if he returns on time) Cavani - with sky high footballing intelligence - he can hit the ground running and nobody seems to want to bite because they got burnt by Werner last year, or Pepe the shiny 9.5 plaything the year before, when those failures have no impact on Sancho, this year, in this team.

      1. Camzy
        • 16 Years

I'm less concerned with his potential and more concerned with his lack of a preseason.

He hasn't played in a single friendly yet and if this is his new team that's a lot of preseason work adapting to the style and tactics of the new team.

And if Villa take 3 or 4 games to gel? Or worse rotate their players. Cantwell rumoured to sign so can you say with certainty you know their XI? Euros players starting late and real life transfer window closing after week 3 means you could be picking a WC team in week 4 based on teams that aren't set or players that haven't even played yet.

Just playing devil's advocate but it has the potential to be a disastrous move imo.

Yeah, 3 new players and one established player in a new position - no guarantees that quartet are going to go and start scoring 3's & 4's right out the gate

They have their first game in 8 days... away to a newly promoted team who were pretty solid defensively at home last season

If Cantwell comes in at most one of those three attackers get dropped and then I have Raphinha or ESR to come on from the bench in that case. Won’t be disastrous and if it’s evident it won’t pay off then I’m out of the situation as fast as 1FT

I had Watkins last season when Grealish was out and probably held on too long. He didn't do much and 7.5 could be better spent

I worry about Villa without Grealish and embedding new players into a new system

Everton's fixtures too good to ignore, same with Pool defence (Robbo and TAA are basically wingers anyway), and feel like Watkins will at least be getting significant minutes in a Villa team who should score, even with all the new players.

Still looking at Cavani, Maddison, and worried about no City for GW2, but getting more settled now.

Prefer Antonio to Watkins after Ings signing. Good fixtures too.

If you downgrade DCL to a 7.5 and Robbo to a 4.5, you can have a 7.5m 4th mid.

Assume you’re set on TAA/Robbo though.

Yeah, I just think that Robbo at £7m is better than most of the £7m mids - or at least more consistent and predictable.
Antonio/Watkins will come right down to the wire I think... will keep an eye on pre-season, but not too comfortable having no Villa player for the fixtures.
Robbo to Dias is the main temptation - set and forget, cover in GW2, and an extra £1m to upgrade eg Watkins to Cavani.

        Agree with the robbo downgrade.

With Wilson on a slight injury and Watkins now competing/sharing goals with Ings not sure if there is a viable 7.5 fwd to go alongside Antonio.

        7.5m I like a Pepe punt.

    thoughts on cancelo vs Dias?

I'll have a decent bench so does that favor cancelo?

    Thought experiment

Pretend you were looking at blocks of 5 fixtures and not 3 and decided that Jim had a sufficient number of good fixtures in that run when you consider guaranteed starts, pens and talisman status, what would you do if he scored a goal and an assist with a couple of baps?

Modest returns of course and at least one other 7.5 would almost certainly have done better. But would that not be simply an indication of standard Jim form which means holding indefinitely is value at his price - every avoided transfer being an effective minus 4 saved?

One goal and an assist? Seems plausible.

So far today we've seen people talking themselves out of TAA & Bruno, getting geared up to guess which of Pep's 9x attackers are going to be involved in 4 & 5 goal smashings of Spurs, and how to fit in 4 Aston Villa assets...

Looks like we're very close to (if not already in) peak pre-season FFS-boards overthinking territory 😆
