The Fantasy Premier League (FPL) midfield pool at Manchester City has been swollen further by the signing of Jack Grealish (£8.0m) from Aston Villa.

The England international has joined the reigning champions on a six-year deal, with a transfer fee of £100m being reported.

The player said upon his move:

I am incredibly happy to have joined Manchester City. City are the best team in the country with a manager considered to be the best in the world – it’s a dream come true to be part of this club.

Over the past 10 seasons, they have won major trophies consistently. Pep coming here has taken them to the next level and the football this team plays is the most exciting in Europe. To play for Pep and learn from him is going to be special and it’s something any top footballer would want.

The facilities are amazing, and I honestly can’t wait to get started, meet everyone and get playing.

City’s Director of Football, Txiki Begiristain, added:

We are absolutely delighted to be able to welcome Jack Grealish to Manchester City. He is an incredible talent.

Jack’s development over the past few seasons both for club and country has been plain for everybody to see. His natural talent together with his commitment to improve as a player, has seen him become one of the most exciting attacking players in world football today.

I am certain that the fans are going to love seeing him in our team. Pep loves the way he plays, and we all feel he is an ideal fit for Manchester City. Our style and his style are a perfect match. I’m excited to watch him over the coming years.

Grealish predominantly played on the left side of attack in a 4-2-3-1/4-3-3 at Villa, although was occasionally deployed deeper in the central midfield trio.

Capable of also operating as a number 10, his move to City does beg the question over who will make way to accommodate him.

Raheem Sterling (£11.0m) and Phil Foden (£8.0m) were both used heavily down the left flank in 2020/21, while Ilkay Gundogan (£7.5m) had the stronghold over the left-side central midfield spot.

Above: Average position maps for 2021/22 taken from our Premium Members Area

Only two midfielders created more chances (CC, below) than Grealish in the Premier League last season, while new teammate Kevin De Bruyne (£12.0m) was the only one who could beat his minutes-per-CC average of 27.

We’ll have more in-depth analysis on Grealish’s move in a Moving Target piece tomorrow.

    Sanchez / Foster

    Shaw / TAA / Digne / Veltman / White

    Salah / Sancho / Barnes / Buendia / Raphina

    Antonio / DCL / Toney

Somethings not right. Aside from Bruno - who I’m happy to leave out for 3 mid priced mids.

It’s the benching headache you’ve created. You need to pick a formation and downgrade either Toney or Barnes to upgrade the other in my opinion.

What do you think about this (until FPL places Grealish in City) -

    Dias, Cancelo, Mahrez, Grealish ?

Everton have got the fixtures, if DCL gets firing I think he's a good pick. Tottenham just generally worry me atm, Kane situation, new 54th choice defensively minded manager etc

Depends how you spend the extra 2.0m in option b.
Son and Obafemi v DCL and a 6.5m mid (e.g. Raphinha) would be a fairer comparison.

Prediction: Grealish will get less minutes in the league this season than Mahrez, Sterling, Foden, KDB & F. Torres.

Are we playing Pep roulette or go with no city players?

Well long term he will be the future of the team but city have a unique style and players have to get peps trust.

My bet is Grealish plays most minutes on the left and Mahrez on the right. Number 9 is a minefield and will be really shared minutes between Torres, Sterling, Jesus and even KdB getting some games there but he is the most nailed!

Pep can effectively start 5 “attackers” (for FPL purposes) in any given game (put forwards, wingers, 10’s & 8’s all together for estimation)

That gives a total pool of available starts of 190 for a full season (38 games x 5 slots)

Last season - City’s starts (vs apps in brackets) across their “attackers” comes out to 182, which is pretty close - when Pep plays 3 centrebacks it removes one of the 5 so it’s a bit less than 190, but close

      Sterling - 28 (31)
      Mahrez - 23 (27)
      Foden - 17 (28)
      Torres - 15 (24)
      Jesus - 22 (29)
      Bilva - 24 (26)
      KDB - 23 (25)
      Gundo - 23 (28)
      Kun - 7 (12)
      Total starts = 182

If you add Grealish and remove Kun, it just doesn’t look good for anyone on that list to start more than 25 games imo

Certainly not to start more than 30 (I think at KDB’s age now even he will struggle to go above 30 starts)

Especially when you factor in that Foden & Torres surely aren’t going to get *less* starts than last year - that leaves even less of the pool available for others to share.

Linearly, those 9 players sharing 190 starts comes out at 21 each, so I think pretty much all of them will be operating in the 20-25 starts ballpark

It’s just hard to see how it’s wise going near any of these guys without an injury bottleneck or something of that ilk that clearly signposts who is going to be starting for an extended period of time

          Starts-wise, his last 3 seasons have been 23, 32, 11

I just don’t see him becoming more physically robust as he passes the dreaded three-zero

Apparently he played the Italy match with compromised ankle ligaments too

Feels like Foden, Torres and Mahrez all really started to excel last season so would be expecting big minutes this year. Add in KDB and.Gundo (the 2 pep trusts the most) and there’s not much room for old Grealish

Which team set up do you think stronger between

A Ayling Mahrez Obafemi 3-5-2 draft

    Bachmann
    TAA Veltman* Shaw
    Salah Bruno Mahrez* Raphinha Buendia
    Antonio Toney

    Foster White Ayling Obafemi*

B Digne Gilmour Ings 3-4-3 draft

    Bachmann
    TAA Digne* Shaw
    Salah Bruno Raphinha Buendia
    Ings* Antonio Toney

    Foster Veltman White Gilmour*

C the BrunoNo draft 3-5-2 - same as team A but midfield with Son Havertz over Bruno Buendia
    Salah Son Mahrez Havertz Raphinha

Villa have now assembled the following XI for a net cost of 105m 😆

    Martinez (15m)
    Cash(15m), Mings (20m), Konsa (12m), Targett (14m)
    Luiz (15m), McGinn (3m)
    Bailey (30m), Buendia (30m) Watkins (30m)
    Ings (25m)

    Total = 210m
    Grealish = (105m)
    Net Cost = 105m

It must be worth 3 times that value on the market… some good transfer biz to be fair to them

The current manager sold Martinez for dirt cheap, gave Willian 220k a week, buying players like Cedric/Mari. Also splashed 50m on White and loaned out Saliba yet again, instead of addressing the areas which needed to be addresssed.

We are years and years behind everyone else and it’s almost frightening how bad the club is being run.

    Please comment guys:

    1) Considering that now Ollie Watkins will move to the wing after Ings coming in, is it safe to keep him, or rather take a pint on someone like a Callum Wilson?
    2) is anyone nailed on in city in the front 4?
    3) is it worth the risk to have both Buendia and Leon bailey, and give up Ollie Watkins altogether in a villa double up?

    Thanks in advance

Pure speculation about Watkins moving to the left. Yes he has played there numerous times with Brentford but his record as a #9 is way way better. Could go two up top just wait and see on Saturday I guess.

I don’t like Callum Wilson until I see what kind of Newcastle turn up. Prefer the other 7.5 options to him.

City is still a minefield just KDB nailed but I like Mahrez to begin.

Don’t see why not. Buendia definitely but Bailey might be a wait and see.

Anybody thinking Grealish could be a monster at City?

He had a PPM of 5.2 last season. If he had played every game that's a 200 point season.

Which one of these scenarios is most likely do you think?

A). He starts 25 matches, scores heavily and the matches he doesn't start your sub comes in. Those scores combined get to over 200 points.
B). He is benched more often and even then he comes off the bench for a 1 pointer. You don't get the benefit of your sub points. Jack Harrison outscores him in the end.

      A mixture of both

Will score well when he starts (but only starts 20 ish matches) and gets a host of 1 point cameos

Yes, I believe he will be regarded as "essential" at some point this season.

Id still back a City player to get higher returns in 20mins than most do in 90 to be fair

i don't know why i think this - but i feel like Grealish will play 90% of the league games.

and if Kane comes he would too.

      just a feeling.

He's at a club now where the goals and assists will be shared far more than they were at Villa. KDB will still dominate setpieces you'd imagine, Mahrez or someone else will take pens, and they have so many avenues to go down when attacking compared to Villa who consistently needed to go through Grealish, that while I expect him of course to create plenty, he isn't going to be the main man now so he may need to alter his game a bit.

Kane must be absolutely stewing at the Grealish move, Messi being available now/Haaland for cheap in 10 months & Lukaku filling Chelsea’s striker slot

Hope he doesn’t get his move & has to eat humble pie & apologise to his teammates, his manager & his fans for refusing to turn up

I don't know, you can't say that without knowing what agreement he has with Daniel Levy. Haaland doesn't change anything, neither does Messi. I can't see City breaking their wage structure for one year . . .

    2. Nate(U)dog(ie)

Levy probably is too. Was prepared to milk City for all he could and if Messi actually is available and this isn't a stunt to push back on the new La Liga rules, he now has to accept that if Kane is to leave it likely won't be for another season and will be for less money.

    Oh damn!

I thought I'd have another day to sort out my Man City team before Grealish changed shirts. Now I have to go with this weird draft that has Chilwell in it or scrap the whole plan:

    Bachmann
    Chilwell Shaw Digne Tierney
    Grealish Mahrez Foden ESR
    Nacho Antonio

    Foster | Kane, Torres, Ayling

        Sanchez
Digne - coufal- veltman ( white, shaw)
        Salah - jota - ziyech - benrahma - mahrez
        Ings - DCL ( toney)
1.5itb. So ziyech out GW 2 With 9.0 in hand for transfer

        Thoughts?

The only way I’d get DCL is if I dumped Digne.
We don’t score enough to warrant a double up.

Yeh Bruno and Buendia is a good combo.

Nope. Because Ings will be injured for most of the season as normal

Watkins is a very capable forward. He must be a little frustrated with this transfer window but I am sure he will get plenty of the season up front one way or another

    Martinez - Foster

By season end I wouldn't be surprised if Emi was 150 and Bach/Sanch around there too. Pop the mill into Ings, turn Madders into Barnes and get Ayling.
