The Fantasy Premier League (FPL) midfield pool at Manchester City has been swollen further by the signing of Jack Grealish (£8.0m) from Aston Villa.

The England international has joined the reigning champions on a six-year deal, with a transfer fee of £100m being reported.

The player said upon his move:

I am incredibly happy to have joined Manchester City. City are the best team in the country with a manager considered to be the best in the world – it’s a dream come true to be part of this club.

Over the past 10 seasons, they have won major trophies consistently. Pep coming here has taken them to the next level and the football this team plays is the most exciting in Europe. To play for Pep and learn from him is going to be special and it’s something any top footballer would want.

The facilities are amazing, and I honestly can’t wait to get started, meet everyone and get playing.

City’s Director of Football, Txiki Begiristain, added:

We are absolutely delighted to be able to welcome Jack Grealish to Manchester City. He is an incredible talent.

Jack’s development over the past few seasons both for club and country has been plain for everybody to see. His natural talent together with his commitment to improve as a player, has seen him become one of the most exciting attacking players in world football today.

I am certain that the fans are going to love seeing him in our team. Pep loves the way he plays, and we all feel he is an ideal fit for Manchester City. Our style and his style are a perfect match. I’m excited to watch him over the coming years.

Grealish predominantly played on the left side of attack in a 4-2-3-1/4-3-3 at Villa, although was occasionally deployed deeper in the central midfield trio.

Capable of also operating as a number 10, his move to City does beg the question over who will make way to accommodate him.

Raheem Sterling (£11.0m) and Phil Foden (£8.0m) were both used heavily down the left flank in 2020/21, while Ilkay Gundogan (£7.5m) had the stronghold over the left-side central midfield spot.

Above: Average position maps for 2021/22 taken from our Premium Members Area

Only two midfielders created more chances (CC, below) than Grealish in the Premier League last season, while new teammate Kevin De Bruyne (£12.0m) was the only one who could beat his minutes-per-CC average of 27.

We’ll have more in-depth analysis on Grealish’s move in a Moving Target piece tomorrow.

    Thoughts on my draft?

    Mendy-Guaita
    TAA-Konate-Shaw-Mings-Mitchell

Really? You think so? :-/ that kinda rattles me
this is the first draft in 8 years of FPL where I was so satisfied and where I thought it was possible not to have to pull the first WC before the 2nd GW as usual.

pretty sure Kane, Pukki, Benrahma, Raphinha, Jota and Grealish will be nailed starters.
+ Daka will get minutes and will surely score. Ziyech could be a great differential.

We don't even know if Kane will turn up. Pukki has had his main service cut off. Grealish and Jota are both in rotation sides. Daka I think will long term take Vardy's place but bench to start. Ziyech is absolutely a rotation player with Lukaku arriving.

Really interesting how people have been thinking about a punt for proven rotate-risky players such as foden, gundo, torres etc. But then city broke the bank for a marquee signing who's points per match was around the same than for those previously mentioned but in a much weeker team.

I definately take the point, and i"m quite happy to take this poll result to be fair - and maybe have a +30% owned "differential" 🙂

Thanks again for all the replys, it was a pleasure!

    A. Foster to Bachmann (rotate with Sanchez)

    B. Omabamidele to Ayling (gives 5 playing defenders)

    C. White to 5.0 defender (Tierney or Targett)

So I put Ederson, Mahrez, Gundo, Grealish and Kane in my team yesterday and forgot about it.
If, for some mad reason, I wanted to start the season with them all does that mean I can't touch the team at all now?
There's the big "Too many players selected from Man City" banner above the squad but does that only come into effect the next transfer I do? Or is the team already illegal?

Rules state that you'll need to change if and when you make transfers. You can keep until then.

I thought I'd be funny and put Grealish, Kane, Stones, Cancelo and Torres in my side. Can't see me keeping it but it will be funny to have 5 man City

i think it would be a shame for a player to not want to test themselves against the best teams and instead settled for a mid-level club because everyone loves you.

sure there's the romanticism of being at one club and lifting them to glory - but that's not how it really works - the richest clubs win everything.

i don't know about the second part of being a "small cog". it's a similar argument that comes up in other sports.

athletes are conditioned by the public to be considered failures if they don't win. also they're intensely competitive almost by a rule. football is not an individual sport where someone can win on their own - and through no fault of the players the current environment is that only the rich clubs win.

i completely understand fans being disappointed for players leaving, but to make it out as a short-coming of a player to want to win - or really to have agency to go anywhere for whatever reason - to me is unfair.

yep this is a great point.

          I'd take that bet probably...for example -

Grealish 2 seasons ago (not injured) - 3,550 minutes between PL and Cups

Foden (last season) - 3,374 minutes btw all comps

I imagine Grealish plays a bigger role this season than Foden did last year.

not obviously? I dont think Pep bought a LW when he already has 2.

I look at it like this:
KdB is 30 and his body is pretty broken
David Silva left a year ago and wasnt replaced
Bernardo Silva wants to go back to Spain.

He will play #8 (City usually play 2 anyway)

            2. RogDog_jimmy
              • 5 Years

i don't know but i think Grealish plays a lot.
if the reporting is accurate it seems he's seen as an 8.

              so maybe

              Kane
              Foden Mahrez
              Grealish KDB
              Gundo

              4 at the back.

                ------------- Rodri / Fernaninho
                ----- Grealish/Bilva -------- KdB/Gundog
                Mahrez/Torres --- Kane ---- Sterling/Foden

Willing to listen to offers on Mahrez/Sterling
KdB will be injured at some point

You've got Grealish on the wrong side of the pitch. Surely his competition for a spot is Sterling/Foden.

Just made my first draft in a couple of weeks... any holes?

    Sanchez
    Trent, Shaw, Digne
    Salah, Fernandes, Jota, Buendia
    Antonio, Iheanacho, Toney

    Steele, White, Brownhill, Omobamidele

      There are so many holes,
      1 in jota,iheanacho,toney each
      2 in Antonio
Your bench also got further 3 holes !!!
Jokes apart got a nice team on a first draft!!!liked it.

I agree Jota is a bit of a rotation risk. Can't settle on that last midfield spot, been on Salah Fernandes and Buendia and have been swapping striker spot with it.

Why is Antonio a bad pick?
Bench is just fodder other than White (whom I think will come good).

To me I'm leaning away from Jota.
I think in that 7.5 I might go with Pepe for week 1 instead...but also it's all up to preference.

Folks also seem to be thinking Iheanacho won't start, or will come off early with Daka & Vardy around.
If he plays I love him, but that seems like some kind of risk.

That last midfield spot is so difficult. It's either essentially you punt on someone or go 4 at the back. 4-3-3 is never a formation that appealed to me though.

        Dias - Stones - TAA
        Salah - Son - Raph - Buendia - Gundo
        Bamford - Toney

At 100m, I'd be shocked if he's rotated. If he's fit, he starts most games. Next season may be different once he's settled in but you don't buy a shiney new toy and keep it in the box.

Plus he's only 8m. Probably the cheapest most nailed on of the city attacking mids. Gundogan is clearly going to drop deeper to accommodate him.

      expensive midfielders more vital.
vardy will probably get like 15 goals this season as usual, a good return, but you can get 12 goals possibly with a 7-8m striker instead

    Sanchez (Ward)
    White Lowton Ayling Dier Coady
El Ghazi Bissouma Mane Salah KDB
    Maupay DCL Watkins

if i can find one 4.0 defender then i can upgrade Maupay to Antonio!

Also having a few doubts about KDB, City just have too many attacking midfielders, he'll surely play deeper again and could well be rotated a lot more

  22. Dr. Rog

    Bachman 4
    TAA Shaw White/Ayling 4

Thanks for your input. I've been backward and forward regarding the need for a strong bench - I usually don't bother, on the premise that a 2nd or 3rd bench player is unlikely to return more than 2-3 points anyway if I should ever need to call on them. Having a fairly reliable first 11 means that the bench can (hopefully) be a bit lighter. I guess my only rotation risk is Barnes, but I've a feeling that he should start for Leicester.
