Our Sky Sports Fantasy Football coverage continues as Scoutcast host and keen Sky player Joe reveals his team for the new season.

The good news in Sky Sports Fantasy Football is that we only have to worry about the first three sets of fixtures, as there is an overhaul ahead of Gameweek 4. This makes it far easier to pick a side as we can simply focus on teams with a kind early run.

Looking at the Season Ticker, investment in Aston Villa (wat, NEW, BRE), Brighton and Hove Albion (bur, WAT, EVE) and Liverpool (nor, BUR, CHE) looks advantageous.

Leicester City (WOL, whu, nor) and Manchester United (LEE, sou, wol) also have a great start to the campaign.

Meanwhile, Norwich City (LIV, mci, LEI) and Arsenal (bre, CHE, mci) are among teams I’ll be avoiding in my search for players.

SIGN UP TO SKY FANTASY FOOTBALL FOR 2021/22 HERE

As a result of Aston Villa’s kind start, I’ve doubled up on Dean Smith’s team, with Emi Martinez (£7.2m) in goal. He’s priced kindly and given that he scored 231 points last time out, which is 32.08 points per million, it’s no wonder he’s in more than a fifth of teams.

My other Villa player is Emiliano Buendia (£7.9m), who should be the main creative force in the side if Jack Grealish get his much-touted move to Manchester City. The former Norwich man was fourth-best player for chance creation in 2019/20, when he was last in the top flight with the Canaries. With 41 goals and 56 assists across his career, he looks primed for points, especially man of the match awards.

Liverpool are another team I’ve doubled up on, with Mohamed Salah (£11.9m) and Andy Robertson (£10.1m). Both have a range of routes to points in their locker.

The Reds’ Egyptian winger also offers great captaincy potential, which is another, if not the main, factor driving my choices.

There are eight captaincy days in Sky across the three Gameweeks.

With Norwich on August 14 and Burnley on August 21, Salah looks the best armband selection on those days.

Brentford’s Ivan Toney (£7.9m) also gets the nod due to his captaincy potential on the single matchday encounter with Arsenal, in the season opener on August 13. If he scores, a man of the match award is surely on the cards.

West Ham assets offer strong captaincy potential on August 15 when they face Newcastle United, on August 23’s single matchday against Leicester and on August 28 when they face Crystal Palace. Currently, Michael Antonio (£8.8m) takes his place as the main Hammer in my team.

Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes (£11.8m) is 39% owned for good reason, having accrued 270 points last season. He looks the best captain on August 22 when the Red Devils travel to Southampton and is among only a few players capable of sweeping the board with assists, goals, bonus and man of the match awards.

I haven’t forgotten Brighton’s kind run; I’m just a little tentative to invest in a backline that has lost Ben White to Arsenal and has other defenders sidelined, such as Lewis Dunk. But I still want to invest on the offchance of three clean sheets, so Adam Webster (£7m) earns a place. Should the Seagulls dominate their matches then the centre-back could also win my side some passing bonus.

Two of my remaining three spots go to points-scoring giants of last season.

Manchester City’s Ruben Dias (£10.6m) is as reliable a starter as we can hope for in Pep Guardiola’s side. With 229 points last season, experienced managers will know of his ability to win passing bonus and clean sheet points.

Chelsea’s Antonio Rudiger (£9m) is another reliable bonus magnet. Across his 20 appearances in 2020/21, he amassed an impressive 130 points and should be far more nailed on this time around.

The final place goes to the traditional ‘unsexy Sky pick’, reserved for a workmanlike defensive midfielder who can rack up bonus points for little investment. Leicester’s Wilfrid Ndidi (£7.5m) fits the bill, especially with his tackle and passing bonus accumulation last time out.

This selection leaves me with £0.3m in the bank – enough to upgrade Salah to Harry Kane (£12.0m) for the armband against Arsenal in Gameweek 3, should he join Manchester City. Sky managers should note that we get to see the line-ups ahead of this midday kick-off.

that is my suspicion as well, but i look at the first 3 and then arsenals run and figure i'll probably end up doing Buendia --> ESR anyway. the thing with ESR is as soon as he scores thats a bandwagon because he enables so much.

it is! defensively much more solid last season and an improving young team.
will finish ABOVE Villa, Leeds & Everton and have cheaper players - whats not to like!

I just don't see it. They're defence is looking better but is traditionally poor. Midfield looks weak. Attack looks weak with Auba and Laca huffing and puffing for last 2 years.

Some great young talent though but as with all young talent they will blow hot and cold.

I'm on a watching brief as I think Saka ESR Pepe could step up and be dangerous. But it's an if for now.

Gone off them as well, switching to 3-5-2 as I don't like the Watkins alternatives.

        Sanchez
        TAA Robbo Stones
        Salah Son Raph Buendia Gundo
        Bamford Toney

        Subs: Steele Coufal Veltman Oba

Coufal gives me a decent bench player if Stones & Gundo get rotated a bit. But can't ignore City players PPG potential

In light of the Ings signing, many suspect Ollie Watkins will moved to the wing (a role he has performed for Dean Smith at Brentford whilst he was manager until October 2018). Still some decent returns in there.

He gets a lot of minutes either way so still think he'll be a decent option. Only missed 100 mins across two seasons worth of full starts. Suspect Ings will need to be managed so he'll move central whenever Danny boy comes off.

It's just too much doubt now. With him moving to the left (probably) then their entire front four has changed. Need to see how it clicks. Could be gold but might take a dozen games to get going

I'm happy to keep him in and chance it one game at a time. If not looking promising, he's an easy move out.

      Don't like 4-4-2.

I think Robertson is a poor pick to start the season. There I said it. Straight up a poor pick. He's 7.0m but he's crucially a defender which means you're paying 2m over what the value you can get from a Tierney or a Coufal.

Liverpool's defense is also really uncertain. They'll likely start with Matip and Konate in defense and Thiago got a slight injury and Hendo not ready for the start of the season. What makes people think they'll be defensive juggernauts worthy of 2 defenders that are 2M+ on a standard pick.

I think I'm closer to dropping TAA now than I am to getting double defense.

      1. Emiliano Sala
        • 9 Years

If TAA is a must have and good value, certainly robbo is a good pick too!

I don't think TAA is a must-have and certainly not 'great value'.

He's there because he's high potential and because having a reliable stalwart in defense is important to minimize transfers. If I knew how to perfectly rotate 4.5m defenders I'd do that over TAA but I don't so I just pay the extra and he takes up one of the 3 slots.

Robbo + TAA is 2 huge defenders which really hurts your budget up top and that's a big difference. How many teams do you see with Salah + Mane?

      2. S.Kuqi
        • 13 Years

Robbo is great pick from the off. Despite uncertaincies in Liverpool defence, can't see Norwich or Burnley scoring.

Tierney is injury prone and atleast one third of Coufal assist were lucky or dodgy last year.

Fair enough. Let's say Robertson is dropped to fodder to play 3 atb. Then struggling to figure out how to invest the 3m...

        Brownhill > Jota?
        Obafemi > Wilson?

Would you have these 2 instead of Robbo?

Just be careful - over the last few weeks you’ve now talked yourself out of TAA *and* Bruno

TAA, because of Liverpool’s uncertain defence (which was the best in the league over the last third of the season… even without centrebacks) and the value of Tierney (who has missed 35 of the last 70 games with injury) and Coufal (who was good at 4.5 but was getting fortuitous assists for 3 yard passes on the edge of his own penalty box to Lingard, who’d run 75 yards beating 7 players to score)

And Bruno because of his Portugal form (which has always been shoddy) and the risk of Ole playing him as a DM (because Ole might now change formation)

Nothing to say TAA & Bruno don’t get 30 points between them in the first 5 gameweeks - they are guaranteed nothing…

But this is a category 1, textbook, example of late-stage pre-season FFS-boards overthinking, and it’s how people end up playing early wildcards to fix silly teams in teams in tatters

I have TAA and Bruno atm. I was convinced by GreenArrow to have Bruno in case Kane - City becomes a thing.
It's much easier to do like Fernandes + Toney > Kane + 6.0m mid than any other way.

I like my team atm. I don't think I'm overthinking. Much better than last season anyhow:

          Bachmann Foster
          TAA Digne Tierney Ayling Livramento
          Salah Fernandes Mahrez Raphinha Benrahma
          DCL Toney Oba

The core is there, and I have some handpicked differentials in Mahrez and Benrahma. Maybe Ings for DCL but we'll see.

Don't agree that Robertson is a poor pick.

You don't have to be a 'defensive juggernaught' necessarily to keep a CS vs. Norwich & Burnley.

Obviously no certainty, but neither is whichever midfield you're buying returning point either.

Robertson has a 'poor' season last year by his standards, and yet he still score 161 points, more than any other defender!

The only midfielders with more points than that are: Fernandes, Salah, Son, Mané, Rashford & Dallas

I doubt you're affording 5 of those, so tell me why a Robertson is a bad option, given the two opening fixtures.

I'm not saying he won't get 2 points in each game, just think I think your arguement is very flawed & it is probably unwise to rule him out so quickly.

I think he's a poor pick to start the season because he hurts your team flexibility.

Having 2m tied up in defense means your midfield options are hurt quite a lot. Instead of getting on a super hot Sancho, Mahrez, Havertz, you're stuck with the 6.5m tier of player who has a lower ceiling.

Overall points is not a good gauge of how strong a player pick is. Lingard was essential for a while last season. Heck even DCL was essential early on. If you had money stuck on Robertson you didn't have the option to get those guys.

4-4-2 is not bad if you have the right players and some flexibility, it looks good. I agree Robertson is a bit expensive, you can get Cancelo, Shaw (or Chilwell in the future) who had similar upside and you have a defender on the bench to come on when he doesn't feature. Then you could upgrade Brownhill to ESR or squeeze in Sarr.

Well Watkins is now less desirable imo. That's the bog standard template.

The problem I have with the template is that it's not great for the budget price points x2 7.5m fwds and x2 6.5m mids means if you get an 8.0m fwd or a 7.5m mid that gets hot you're a bit stuck for how to get them in.

      It's very close to perfect
Personally I think you need to downgrade either Martinez or Shaw to get an 8m forward and leave 0.5 ITB

Yeah Toney will start majority was just first game the others had a great fixture and one of Coufal Keane Targett will be on the bench for the rest

Don't know if I like the idea of having 3no. rotating £5.0 defenders. Downgrade one of them to a £4.5 and keep £0.5 itb for bandwagons?

I had a 4.5 in for Targett before and Grealish had been Gundagon too meaning I had 1m itb

So I could upgrade Toney to a 7.5, you think that is a better solution?

Yeah, I've never been keen on Toney personally. Prefer the £7.5 options in attack.

Would building a team with around 5m left in the bank so you could then upgrade a mid/fwd to Kane/Salah/Bruno/KDB/Lukaku(?) be idiotic?

Wouldn't do that personally. £5m is a lot to have just sitting there burning a hole in your pocket. I am all for keeping some money on the side, but wouldn't do more than £1.0. I will be likely keeping £0.5itb myself

They have not played a single game together. The goalkeeper situation still not resolved. To begin the season, I think they will not be keeping a lot of clean sheets.

Once they have all trained and played together, then no doubt - it would be a solid defence. Don't see it happening straight away though.

I have tweaked my team slightly I went for the 'value' White over Tierney, got the fashionable Veltman instead of Webster.
Plus I jumped on the Ings train instead of Watkins. All I can think of is the amount of chances that will be created for Ings in those first three gamewees.
Plus Ings has played preseason for Southampton so at worst it is two games and a 30 mins for Ings.

        Bachmann (foster)
        -
        TAA - White - Veltman (Ayling-Reguilon)
        -
        Salah-Townsend-Son-Buendia (Brownhill)
        --
        DCL-Ings-Vardy

I am gambling on a no Bruno Fernandes but it seems Man United could be very weakened gw1. I predict a lot of 'Bruno fail' posts.
Also I feel many people seem blinded by the 7.5 strikers there are other options with less question marks.
Vardy will likely be changed around gw4/5 ish Kane/Lukaku dependant

Only thing I am not sure of now is Doherty or Reguilon - which one is the more secure? Nuno sold Doherty after all!

Vardy only got in by fluke to be honest. When I was looking at a move to Kane gw4 draft. Then I realised it looked decent.
Now with the Ings news and Iheanacho starting doubts I think there will be less template picks in the front three. Many might even switch to a two.
I just decided to go for starters and proven quality finishers in my three. Plus pens if I could get them.

All depends on how you plan to field your squad for the first 4 GWs. I like Ayling but his opening matches are tough. If you have the squad to bench Ayling for the tough matches he'd be my pick
