We round up the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) talking points from more of Saturday’s pre-season matches in our latest Scout Notes article.

Already we have provided a summary of the Community Shield and a recap of games involving Brighton and Hove Albion, Burnley, Crystal Palace, Newcastle United, Norwich City and Watford.

Now we focus on Manchester United, Everton and Brentford.

Don’t forget to check out our comprehensive pre-season page for more information on the action taking place ahead of Gameweek 1.

FPL pre-season: Trossard hits hat-trick from wing-back role 1

MANCHESTER UNITED 4-0 EVERTON

Toney fitness update as 1
  • Goals: Mason Greenwood (£7.5m), Harry Maguire (£5.5m) Bruno Fernandes (£12.0m), Diogo Dalot
  • Assists: Luke Shaw (£5.5m), Nemanja Matic (£4.5m), Fred (£5.0m)

Bruno Fernandes (£12.0m) said he was “ready” for the upcoming Premier League season after scoring a superb free-kick in Manchester United’s 4-0 demolition of Everton on Saturday.

The Portuguese schemer had a disrupted pre-season thanks to his involvement at Euro 2020 but his country’s relatively early exit from the competition at least allowed him more of a break than United’s English contingent, and he looked sharp in an hour-long run-out against the Toffees.

“I’m feeling ready, honestly. It was a good break for me, I enjoyed it. I’ve come back and had two weeks of training and I’m feeling fresh and ready to start the season.

“Of course, we know now that that game [Leeds] is the one that counts for the league. Today was about doing the right things, taking some minutes in the legs, start doing the right things and try to put in what we are training all week in Scotland.

“Now we have one more week to prepare for the game and we have to prepare well because it’s a different game, different intensity, different team, different way to play. We know what to expect and I hope we can have the same result as today.” – Bruno Fernandes

A glimpse of the much-hyped new 4-3-3 shape was in evidence at Old Trafford (even if it was much more of a tweak to the usual 4-2-3-1), with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said to be keen on evolving United into a more attack-minded unit this season and moving away from a double-pivot in midfield.

It’s still early days to see how this newfound approach affects last season’s highest-scoring FPL asset, as Fernandes was as advanced against the Toffees as he usually he is.

United didn’t even have to draw on their attacking nous from open play to establish a 3-0 advantage; Mason Greenwood‘s (£7.5m) opener was gift-wrapped and Harry Maguire (£5.5m) headed home a Luke Shaw (£5.5m) corner before Fernandes conjured up his dead-ball brilliance.

Greenwood was originally stationed on the right of a United attack spearheaded by the fit-again Anthony Martial (£8.5m), although moved centrally after half-time.

Absent again were Edinson Cavani (£8.0m) and Jadon Sancho (£9.5m), while Dean Henderson (£5.0m) and Jesse Lingard (£7.0m) also missed out because of Covid-19.

Solskjaer said:

“Jesse, he feels okay, and hopefully it’ll stay that way but when you get the positive test you’ve got to isolate even if you’re feeling well.

“Dean, he was positive early on and then he’s negative in his testing but he’s not felt as energised or sharp as he has done. So he’s still fatigued and feeling the after-effects. So, you never know, you’ve seen so many effects of this virus, so he’s got a few days still to rest and then we’ll check up on him.

“The medical with Raphael Varane [still] has to be done. He’s isolating at the moment. He had to wait for visas, so unfortunately that took a few more days than expected but we’re going to follow the protocols and the rules, so it’s taken a few more days than we hoped for.

“Jadon is in for Monday and hopefully, then he’s in decent nick and can be involved [against Leeds].” – Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Everton were deprived of the services of Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£8.0m) and Richarlison (£7.5m) against United, with the former suffering from a minor knock and the latter tasting Olympic Games success with Brazil.

That meant that lively new signing Demarai Gray (£5.5m) co-shared central attacking duties with James Rodriguez (£7.0m) in Stretford, with Benitez trialling a 4-4-2 again.

The ex-Liverpool boss bemoaned:

“Today, we didn’t have our strikers, the others did their jobs but it is totally different when we have specific players, especially good players, up front. They are not here, so that changed the dynamic of the team a little bit.

“We have to improve in some areas but the main thing is to be sure we have the team together, then we can manage the way we want to play, with the players who can normally make the difference.

“We want to play like we did in the [earlier pre-season] games. Trying to create chances, trying to move forward quickly.” – Rafael Benitez

Manchester United XI: De Gea, Wan-Bissaka (Dalot 60), Lindelof (Tuanzebe 60), Maguire (Garner 69), Shaw (Williams 60), Matic (Fred 46), van de Beek (Pogba 46), Greenwood, Fernandes (Andreas 60), James (McTominay 69), Martial (Mata 46).

Everton XI: Pickford (Begovic 46), Coleman (Kenny 60), Keane (Holgate 77), Godfrey (Mina 77), Digne, Allan (Davies 60), Doucoure (Delph 46), Iwobi, Rodriguez (Gordon 46), Townsend (Broadhead 68), Gray (Dobbin 78).

BRENTFORD 2-1 VALENCIA

  • Goals: Ethan Pinnock (£4.5m), Frank Onyeka (£5.0m)
  • Assists: Sergi Canos (£5.5m)

Brentford Thomas Frank gave a positive fitness update on Ivan Toney (£6.5m) after Fantasy Premier League’s most-owned forward missed the Bees’ final pre-season match through injury.

Speaking after he witnessed his side see off Valencia 2-1, Frank said:

I don’t think there is almost anything that can keep him out of the game on Friday night [against Arsenal]. I’m sure he’ll be available and ready to play.

For the second match running, Frank opted for a wing-back system – a strong indication, perhaps, that the Premier League rookies will be sent out in that set-up when Arsenal visit south-west London on Friday.

New signing Kristoffer Ajer (£4.5m) was part of the three-man central defence alongside Pontus Jansson (£4.5m) and Ethan Pinnock (£4.5m), the latter of whom underscored his threat from set plays with a headed goal from a Sergi Canos (£5.5m) corner.

The former Celtic stopper impressed at the back, with Valencia restricted to few efforts on target; the visitors’ goal stemming from a ball behind Ajer and Canos, something the big Norwegian is keen to avoid happening again:

“We will go back and learn from this, how to shuffle in a back three and how to press forward.

“If you look at the chances that a top side from Spain create here, there was almost nothing if you take away the goal. We delivered a top performance.” – Kristoffer Ajer

Cano and Rico Henry (£4.5m) were tasked with the wing-back roles, with FPL midfielder Bryan Mbeumo (£5.5m) ending up being stationed ‘out of position’ up front alongside Marcus Forss (£5.5m) – a likely Toney placeholder – in a 3-5-2.

This was a role that Mbeumo excelled in during the Championship play-offs and he had a chance to wrap up the scoring on Saturday, producing a tame effort when racing free of the Valencia backline late in the game.

Frank Onyeka (£5.0m) came on at half-time to form part of the central midfield three and lashed home the winner from the edge of the box.

With Norwich City and Watford’s pre-seasons not going smoothly, the Bees just might well be the best-prepared of the promoted trio of clubs heading into Gameweek 1.

Brentford XI, Raya, Ajer (Bech 74), Jansson, Pinnock; Canós, Norgaard (Bidstrup 82), Janelt (Peart-Harris 87), Henry (Roerslev 74), Ghoddos (Onyeka 46), Mbeumo, Forss (Dervişoğlu 74),

His free kicks aren’t very good.... hence the lack of pts.

If he ups his game with them then he’d be a good pick... I think there’s more chance of a better set piece taker pushing him aside though.

The biggest problem with getting Amartey and Tsimikas is that their fixtures pretty much force you to play 5 at the back this week

Can only start 7 attackers at once. I’d get rid of ziyech as he is unlikely to start many games. Id use the money to upgrade someone to Bruno/son so you have another captaincy option. Not sure on the defense but there’s nothing wrong with it. Chilwell and Dias don’t have good fixtures to start but should be good throughout the season.

If you watch all of West Ham's pre season highlights (especially the more recent ones), you'll see why I think this way, undroppable imo

Wait and see could be too late. West Ham start Europa in GW 4/5 which could have a knock on effect to their prem performances. The time is now.

Fair enough, go with your gut.

It’s the team that worries me… with JLingz, they had the structure and defensive solidity and just needed a wildcard to use the space better in attacking areas and connect the play. Benrahma seems a bit too wide and a bit too selfish to get consistent starts/returns, not sure he fits their setup well. That said Moyes did admit they need to be more adaptable, maybe that will suit him..

Always mystifies me... but the same every year.

Trying to pick my team so reading through some posts.

As usual plenty of posts about who rotates with who for the 4.5 defender picks and a few for changing between 3-4-3 and 3-5-2 rotation.

Why does nobody ever begin with (c)/(vc) rotation posts? Surely it should be the first thing to look at (assuming most have at least 2 captain picks)... it is after all where the most pts come from.

This year is fairly straight forward...but there are other options that may be worth spilling ink over for the adventurous.

Just something I’ve noticed over the years.

    1. Bad Kompany
      • 8 Years
      4 years, 9 months ago

I think it’s because it’s too easy this year. Salah and Bruno/son rotate well. City and Chelsea have tough fixtures so they aren’t much of an option. And then there’s not really any other standout captaincy options from anyone not on those teams

      1. Bad Kompany
        • 8 Years
        4 years, 9 months ago

Out of interest, what are the adventurous rotation options you have found?

      2. Dr Dream
        • 13 Years
        4 years, 9 months ago

If Lukaku goes to Chelsea then they rotate very well as an option with Liverpool for the first 8 or so.... definitely an alternative to the template anyway.

        That aside...

Nobody ever does post about the (c) rotation options in any year....it should be the first thing we do....or at the very least a few posts. On the other hand we get dozens of posts about how the likes of Watford and Norwich defenders might rotate. That’s my real point.

        1. Bad Kompany
          • 8 Years
          4 years, 9 months ago

It’s a good point. Especially with how important captaincy is in this game.

I feel Lukaku becomes an option after gw 7. Liverpool play Chelsea in gw 3 so Utd leave you without a captain

          1. Dr Dream
            • 13 Years
            4 years, 9 months ago

That doesn’t matter for a single game in a run of good fixtures.

There’s every chance that two good attacking teams finish with five or six goals on the board between them... something we overlook....Unless Mourinho is involved of course.

It’s the defenders that are the bigger problem.

            1. Bad Kompany
              • 8 Years
              4 years, 9 months ago

Then what are you looking for if you’re not looking for good fixtures when rotating captaincy? They could score goals against any side but it’s less likely to happen against the better teams

That’s why Salah and Bruno are in every team; that’s the captain rotation.

Keep in mind that easy fixtures don’t always lead to big points

    3. Zoostation

Majority at the moment have some combination of Salah/Fernandes/Son as the big hitters and most are too scared to take it off Salah at the start.

This will all change when Kane and Lukaku come into teams, then this will be more of a valid conversation.

You're right, it should be top of mind.

I guess people have tended to assume as long as they have two or three captain options, the captaincy should take care of itself. Planning them ahead is starting to come into vogue for some, but you wouldn't know it from the comments section.

      1. Dr Dream

Agreed....and it’s been that way since I’ve been a member.

I’m guessing the each year there’s only maybe six good captain options and about the same number of slightly flakier (c) options. You’d think that would generate a few posts at least.

I think he’s likely to play so under Che and around Pukki sounds right

First RMT of the new season..

think I'm pretty set on Jota over Tsimikas at least until firmino is back...have 1mil in the bank, worth adding 0.5 anywhere?

Brighton double up is a bit of a worry but has upside with their fixtures. Not sure about who to bench. Fancy Leeds to give utd a test, so am playing Raph as it stands.

    Sanchez (Foster)

    TAA Shaw Veltman (White, Amartey)

    Salah Bruno Jota Raphinha Benrahma

    Ings Antonio (4.5)

Lukaku will ruin this and I can see TAA > Tsikimas being the easiest solution.

Also TAA > Tskikimas is not a solution ; you're not having TAA for defensive returns.

Don't see firmino starting GW1? given their lack of fitness in midfield can see Jota getting OOP starts in a 4321 this season too.

when I say solution I guess I mean potential enabler.

    Martinez
    Cresswell Shaw Tierney
    Salah Bruno ESR Mahrez
    Bamford Ings Toney

    Foster Aarons Bissouma Manquillo

Thinking of Coufal over Cresswell and maybe Meslier/Schmeichel/Leno over Martinez for that extra 1mil.

Can upgrade Mahrez to Son or Toney to Antonio.

    Any recommendations?

      Not a gundo toney fan

Would prefer Raph and Wilson or Jota over gundo if going short term

The template is narrowing for sure though..

Interested in hearing your thoughts on which looks like it will score more points:

    A. TAA + Raph
    B. Tsimikas + Son

Tsim has been very good (albeit pre-season) Klopp could still prefer Milner. Wait for more info

Currently, on A, should I be tempted by B?

    a)
    Sanchez (4)
    TAA Shaw Cancelo (4.5, 4)
    Salah Bruno Jota Barnes Benhrama
    Ings Toney (4.5)

    b)
    Sanchez (4)
    TAA Shaw Coufal (4.5, 4)
    Salah Son Mahrez Greenwood Barnes
    Ings Toney (4.5)

Is it wise to start the season with Jota ahead of TAA? Have Tsimikas and Salah.

I chose Jota over TAA at the end of last season and it cost me top10k, so not recommended. Jota will eventually get dropped.

Which was a good decision. But maybe this year Liverpool have a better run of fixtures to begin with and TAA ended the season well + had the whole summer off. I was just referring to picking Jota over TAA.

Jota was a trap for me last season, but there's an easy switch to Raphinha in a couple of weeks if/when he gets dropped. Haven't decided yet though.

Maybe drop one GK to 4.0 and upgrade one 4.0 defender to reduce risk if Amartey/Tsimikas don't keep starting long term.

Well, Magnus Carlsen is the king of the 4.0 defenders, so I wouldn't be shocked to see him with something similar. Maybe with a 4.5 for one of them, as I do think he tries to cover most of the significant price points.

      1. Ze_Austin

        That's a flattering comparison. Thanks 🙂

I had Coufal + Toney until I learnt that Wilson is fit

Hovering around the top of PPM very often, so Coufal went down to Omo and Toney became the troll king

Realised Tsimikas can be benched for Amartey in GW3 (or just started anyway), so he's bumped up to being a starter for me

Everything's still subject to change as more info comes

        It really does feel sinful

Amartey/Omo off the bench, sell the next GW

And no, Tsimikas was bought for this exact scenario by Liverpool (TAA has Neco as his backup). He'll have to prove to be awful

I have been considering 2 similar teams as well. But you are right it does feel like a big sin and very risky having all those budget picks in defence. But then look at those midfield/attack.

      A: 3-5-2

      Sanchez Foster
      TAA Shaw Amartey Tsimikas Omo
      Salah Bruno Son Barnes Benehrama
      Ings Toney Oba

      B: 4-4-2

      Sanchez Foster
      TAA Shaw White Amartey Tsimikas
      Salah Bruno Son Barnes Brownhill
      Ings Antonio Oba

Would also love to know what your planned WC strategy is if you do end up going with the three budget defenders. I had planned on waiting till around GW7 for 2nd IB and fixture swings, but might be difficult with the balance of these teams.

        1. Ze_Austin
          • 7 Years

I'd let the season decide that for me. Robbo and KDB won't get fit without the coaches gleefully announcing their returns, so that might need 2 FTs, a hit or a WC

Ings to Jimenez pencilled in for GW4, so I should have around 0.5m to play with by then, most likely for something like Omo to 4.5, and my bench is suddenly normal

      2. Ze_Austin

Both are interesting. I'd prefer the Brighton double up (Veltman) to White's initial fixtures, then maybe make the switch by GW4?

3-5-2 probably has one too many punts, but does look fun

In a dilemma right now, playing 3-5-2 My mid

    Salah, Bruno, Gundogan, Benrahma, Buendia

Still not 100% on Gundogan who had a good match against Leicester had great chances who in any other day he would have converted, was more attacking with KDB out (who might be out for a while). can you recommend other players who might have a better start than Gundogan?
