There is one thing this game can never take from us and that is the hope that comes with Gameweek 1. The new season is upon us and with very little time to go, I thought it would be a good time to share my current draft. I do want to mention that it is very much a work in progress and I don’t know where I will land when the deadline on Friday finally arrives.

Before we move into my draft, I did a fair bit of contemplation over the summer after my disaster of a season last year where I finished at 678,991 in the world.

Those of you that have read my previous articles know that I do like to take a few punts with my captaincies in an attempt to make huge gains in rank. What I did during the break was look back at my previous campaigns and one thing that stood out to me was that most of my captaincy calls where I went against the crowd came through mainly after Gameweek 10 and primarily in the second half of the season.

(Click above to expand)

I had a very poor start last year and never really recovered from it. This is playing at the back of my mind and while I build my Gameweek 1 team, I want to make sure I’m not taking a lot of risks early season (especially with captaincy) and will do so once I have seen enough games and processed enough data. That is when the subconscious really starts acting and I want to continue playing the game I like to play. That is, at least, the thinking at the moment.

Right then, let us get into the team.

Thinking about captaining Mane instead Salah.

    Salah 0 goals
    Mane 4 goals

    Which duo to start with?

    A) Greenwood Jota (one of them likely to become Grealish after GW1)

    B) Coufal Son

    Cheers!

      A.
Let's face it, a good GW1 is usually down to luck.
I've got Jota to make a 3-5-2. Like Greenwood but not sure how Greenwood will fit in post GW1 - reckon he'll get some points in GW1 if Everton friendly was anything to go by.
Really like Son and pre-season, he's been scoring which is a positive sign but Spurs aren't the most consistent team.
Did have Coufal but not sure WH defence will hold out against Newcastle or Palace. As for Southampton, it depends if Adams is on form or not. In a perfect world, I'd have Jota and Son but that comes at the expense of a balanced team and being able to replace Jota for someone cheaper to booth forwards.

Thank you for the thoughts! Make sense. You describe exactly my thinking too.

I am tempted to start with Jota Greenwood tbh, but on the other hand I feel Son will have a huge start…

Probably stupid optimism but as a spurs fan this is probably the best time for us to play city

Had a decent pre season with nuno working with the players, city don’t seem settled, no striker, stones not back 100% yet, potentially ake to exploit

Yeah, I predict a comfortable 3-0 win, son hatrick of course

    Ederson

    Jota Salah Saha 9.5
    Nacho

    Sanchez Raphina Toney 4.5

Who shall I slot in to the 9.5 slot?

How’s this one looking, got rid of Barnes and greenwood for Toney and son, to risky at the back? Feel it could be ok with 2 nailed bench defenders + brownhill to cover jota, rest are nailed in my opinion

    Sanchez
    Tsimikas shaw amartey
    Son salah Bruno jota
    Toney ings Antonio

    4.0 white Ayling brownhill

First draft heading into Friday. Fairly template so far. I could downgrade Ayling to 4.0 & upgrade Mahrez to Son. Jota, Wilson and Havertz also in my thinking.

Let me know your thoughts guys!

    Sanchez
    TAA. Shaw. Coufal
    Salah. Bruno. Mahrez. Raph. Willock
    Antonio. Toney
    (Steele, White, Ayling, Obafemi)

    Currently

Shaw / Cresswell / Tsimikas (Hoever Bednarek)

    Ings / Jesus.

Hoever (Amartey better option for 4.0)
Bednarek (Southampton might be in trouble)
Gross (for an extra 0.5 you can get Raphinha)

          Tough.

Toney may well be an exciting pick but realistically he is PL-unproven (alongside Obafemi who'll barely get gametime) vs. the very proven Raphinha & Gilmour who will probably be nailed and looks great.

Out of those choices A but I have both Raph and Toney. You aren’t going to play gilmour in first few matches anyway because of fixtures so it really is Raph or Toney.

I don’t really intend to play Gilmour or Obafemi they’d be penchant options in a 3-4-3 or 3-5-2 respectively as you say.

Gundo, Son, Mahrez …. or Pepe for a one game punt

Gundo & Mahrez both look at rotation risk.... with Grealish / Sterling could play at their positions...

every City player is a rotation risk part from Ederson, but with both Foden & KdB out and Bernardo maybe out of favour then I think Gundo in particular looks quite solid for a few gameweeks.

The left side of attack is going to be quite congested for sure

For sure a good option, maybe I'm being too clever but I expect a blank and price drop straight away and will try to avoid that

Where you at with Bachmann or Sanchez? Cheers

    1. @persecuted_by_mods

We've kinda been spoiled by teams being promoted and doing really well recently, for some reason I just can't see that happening for any of the 3 this time around. Sticking with Sanchez and the stats

Actually really liking Bachmann the more I look at him. Watford kept clean sheets in 50% of their Championship games and Bachmann had a very high save percentage of 76% (only Krul was higher in the Championship). Apparently the way Watford play is quite defensive and doesn't see defenders complete many passes so Bachman could be very good for bonus if clean sheets are forthcoming.

Sadly they were dreadful against Palace. Not a full first XI but warning signs.

Doesn't mean he won't gobble up BPS as a result, but it's out me off a little.

Yeah. Feel like he could be great but comes with a risk. Brighton posted some excellent defensive stats last season but we all know they still leaked goals

It’s been there for ages- strong performer for Norwich last season and looks to be nailed following Grealish trannie. However, he is flagged and I don’t know why
