In our latest Premium Members article, regular Scout contributor Statto99 examines which Fantasy Premier League (FPL) assets could be quick out of the blocks in 2021/22.

ATTACKERS

Injured Jota out for the season as Mane returns to Liverpool starting XI

The criteria for making our list of attacking ‘early risers’ is this:

  • Only the first four Gameweeks considered regardless of circumstances
  • Scored two or more goals
  • Made three or more goal contributions (including ‘Fantasy’ assists)

For the opening Gameweeks of 2020/21 those criteria produced a list of 31 attacking players, the top of which looks like this:

The jet-propelled start made by Son Heung-min (£10.0m) and Harry Kane (£12.5m) is now etched into FPL folklore, but not so many remember Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£8.0m) outpacing Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) or Neil Maupay‘s (£6.5m) goal-a-game start for a Brighton and Hove Albion side that would soon find it desperately hard to hit the back of the net.

Jorginho (£6.0m) benefitted from the early flurry of penalties being awarded in a hyper-sensitive refereeing environment while the jury was still out on whether Patrick Bamford (£8.0m) and Ollie Watkins (£7.5m) could sustain this kind of form so soon after stepping up from the Championship.

If you’d managed to select a few of these in your starting squad, or taken a judicious hit here and there to grab them early, you were probably setting the pace in your mini-leagues, but there was a steady cast of performers just below this top group who were also putting significant points on the board:

Aston Villa and Manchester United were among the teams to miss Gameweek 1 because of commitments late into the previous, over-running season, but Bruno Fernandes (£12.0m) still managed to get a couple of goals and an assist in his opening three fixtures while no fewer than three Villa players joined him in the early riser ranks as the exhilarating 7-2 home demolition of Liverpool and a pair of victories over promoted Fulham and Sheffield United generated plenty of attacking spoils to share around.

A couple of defenders also qualified under the attacking criteria with a pair of set-piece goals for Chelsea’s Kurt Zouma (£5.5m) and some rampaging forward runs by Timothy Castagne (£5.5m) bringing Leicester City early returns.

OPPORTUNITY KNOCKS

What you can’t fail to notice is the eclectic mix of attacking early risers in 2020/21 ranging from celebrated FPL names like Sadio Mané (£12.0m) and Raúl Jiménez (£7.5m) to promoted talent and unsung heroes in Callum Robinson and Pablo Fornals (£6.0m).

Overall, 31 midfielders and forwards qualified for the early riser list for last season, but what could be useful to this year’s FPL managers is knowing whether there are any patterns that emerge when you extend the scope back to earlier campaigns. If you take the most recent three seasons there are never fewer than 25 attacking early risers:

2020/212019/202018/19
Qualifying “early riser”
FPL attackers
312625

This is good news for FPL managers as it demonstrates that every season there are about four times more attacking options than are needed for an FPL squad that return significantly in the opening Gameweeks and, as we have seen, they come at a range of price points.

Even more helpfully, five ‘banker’ attackers have achieved the required standard in each of the last three seasons. The £12.0+m trio of Salah, Kane and Mané will surprise nobody by their inclusion, but few would easily guess the identity of the other two.

I would prefer Greenwood for GW1 alone but prefer more nailed players, i wouldn't normally go with three 4m defenders but they are a gift that cant be ignored to start with e.g. Mitchell last season.

I'm sure many are down to this decision too:

    A/ TAA, Tsim, 7m mid

    or

    B/ Tsim, 5m defender, Son

To Son or not is the question (while still having Bruno and Salah).

I really want Son in from start but don't think it's sensible to sacrifice Bruno.

I totally get why TAA is considered essential but sometimes we have to bet against the big names.

As a Rovers fan, Armstrong is an appealing pick. Good price at 6.0m.

He's a perfect FPL option. Shoots a lot, selfish, takes set pieces/pens (might not for SOU with JWP around). I'd like to see him start a game or two but by GW3 I could be convinced to pick him up just in time for Newcastle.

We have also slightly adjusted tactically.
Last season we were one of the fewest counter-attacking sides, however, in pre-season there has been a very clear shift. Hasenhüttl also spoke about this being a clear focus in training.
We put 4 and 3 goals past Cardiff and Swansea respectively and it was very obvious. Should suit Adam's game well.

Personally and what seems the collective within the fan base is that Tella starts as the LAM

        Armstrong Tella
        Armstrong Adams

Redmond, Walcott, Djenepo & Elyounoussi are alternative choices, not short of options for this position.

Possibly not, however, as I stated there will be rotation in this position so don't expect consistent games.
He can also play as a 9 so Ralph may also look at using him off the bench as a super-sub with his electrifying pace.

Yeh Tella is good but from a FF perspective he is a no go due to the amount of more experienced options Ralph has. I just dont see him doing more than the odd start and the odd sub appearance - a FF bit part player as I said earlier.

So this chap fits our style perfectly and fits Raphs 4222 formation so I expect him to ultimately partner Che up front. Ralph needs strikers for his system hence why with Ings going we have brought in Armstrong, that Chelsea lad and also recalled Long from Bournemouth. He plays (and looks!) like a cheap mans Ings and only 24, scores for fun, very skilful and energetic. One to watch during the season.

Long is very much on the outer.

Greenwood and Jota better picks for GW1. One of them can go for Gundo next week. Ideally I would like to save one ft, but can't see that happening.

I need to pick 2 from the following - Ings, Wilson, Antonio.

This article would suggest Ings and Wilson but it looks like Antonio is the most popular choice in everyone's RMTs.

    Interesting.....

I’ll have all 3 if I go with A below. Who is your 3rd striker? Toney?

Yeah I'm on Toney as well.

Was fairly set on Ings and Antonio but starting to like the look of Wilson. Fast starter and some nice fixtures.

My current draft has all of them also. They are safer picks than Jota, Gundo and Greenwood. Also easy to downgrade (and perhaps upgrade later). But what are odds for their 6 hamstrings to be fine after GW1 ?

Since it's a coin toss to pick 2/3 of them, picking all 3 is one headache less.

Just put them all into a draft and I think I'm finally settled. All 3 are nailed and tried and trusted in the prem (unlike Toney). Barnes and Raph are nailed for the long term (unlike Jota, Greenwood, even Mahrez). And I prefer Tsim than Amartey as a 4.0 which I can do without Jota.

          Glad I posted now!

Let's not talk about their hamstrings though........ 🙂

      Yeah I'd go A too.

Your teams pretty much the same as mine but I've gone Jota over Raph with the extra 1 million saved from going Toney as my 3rd ST. Not convinced with Toney to be fair, but could see him rise a fair bit if he scores early.

I have at some points. It’s Ings / Martial.

I’m worried Ings won’t be straight into form with the new club. But also that Martial maybe has 2-3 weeks before he becomes a huge rotation risk (or 1 week even).

Yes, an agreement between Blackburn and Southampton has been reached, it is just up to the player now to decide.
Scarlett/Davis is your best bet. Perica will likely be off from what I understand.
