In our latest Premium Members article, regular Scout contributor Statto99 examines which Fantasy Premier League (FPL) assets could be quick out of the blocks in 2021/22.

ATTACKERS

Injured Jota out for the season as Mane returns to Liverpool starting XI

The criteria for making our list of attacking ‘early risers’ is this:

  • Only the first four Gameweeks considered regardless of circumstances
  • Scored two or more goals
  • Made three or more goal contributions (including ‘Fantasy’ assists)

For the opening Gameweeks of 2020/21 those criteria produced a list of 31 attacking players, the top of which looks like this:

The jet-propelled start made by Son Heung-min (£10.0m) and Harry Kane (£12.5m) is now etched into FPL folklore, but not so many remember Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£8.0m) outpacing Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) or Neil Maupay‘s (£6.5m) goal-a-game start for a Brighton and Hove Albion side that would soon find it desperately hard to hit the back of the net.

Jorginho (£6.0m) benefitted from the early flurry of penalties being awarded in a hyper-sensitive refereeing environment while the jury was still out on whether Patrick Bamford (£8.0m) and Ollie Watkins (£7.5m) could sustain this kind of form so soon after stepping up from the Championship.

If you’d managed to select a few of these in your starting squad, or taken a judicious hit here and there to grab them early, you were probably setting the pace in your mini-leagues, but there was a steady cast of performers just below this top group who were also putting significant points on the board:

Aston Villa and Manchester United were among the teams to miss Gameweek 1 because of commitments late into the previous, over-running season, but Bruno Fernandes (£12.0m) still managed to get a couple of goals and an assist in his opening three fixtures while no fewer than three Villa players joined him in the early riser ranks as the exhilarating 7-2 home demolition of Liverpool and a pair of victories over promoted Fulham and Sheffield United generated plenty of attacking spoils to share around.

A couple of defenders also qualified under the attacking criteria with a pair of set-piece goals for Chelsea’s Kurt Zouma (£5.5m) and some rampaging forward runs by Timothy Castagne (£5.5m) bringing Leicester City early returns.

OPPORTUNITY KNOCKS

What you can’t fail to notice is the eclectic mix of attacking early risers in 2020/21 ranging from celebrated FPL names like Sadio Mané (£12.0m) and Raúl Jiménez (£7.5m) to promoted talent and unsung heroes in Callum Robinson and Pablo Fornals (£6.0m).

Overall, 31 midfielders and forwards qualified for the early riser list for last season, but what could be useful to this year’s FPL managers is knowing whether there are any patterns that emerge when you extend the scope back to earlier campaigns. If you take the most recent three seasons there are never fewer than 25 attacking early risers:

2020/212019/202018/19
Qualifying “early riser”
FPL attackers
312625

This is good news for FPL managers as it demonstrates that every season there are about four times more attacking options than are needed for an FPL squad that return significantly in the opening Gameweeks and, as we have seen, they come at a range of price points.

Even more helpfully, five ‘banker’ attackers have achieved the required standard in each of the last three seasons. The £12.0+m trio of Salah, Kane and Mané will surprise nobody by their inclusion, but few would easily guess the identity of the other two.

UNEXPECTED PARTIES

Just cannae bring myself to go for Tsimikas over Jota! My team is way more balanced with Tsim and gives me an option for Grealish in GW2 but... Jota vs Norwich is so juicy.

It is, tough choice. I'm of the opinion that Jota will probably point score this weekend, as will Tsmikas, therefore I'm going with both

The problem is leaving TAA out who is a season keeper for me. Really tough to squeeze him back in if you go without initially.

I'm going with TAA & Tsmikas initially. Both very good chance of a clean sheet aswell as attacking points. I'm not sure we'll see Robertson for a month or 2. Liverpool are notorious for underpaying injuries

If that is the case, Tsimikas is a steal. Getting TAA back is the issue. Also, if there is injury to Bobby, Salah or Mane, Jota becomes immediately "essential".

I'm with you. Jota will be in my team most of the season. When it comes time to switch Tsim to Jota, I'll have to prioritize that over everything else and I anticipate other areas of the team will start to suffer. Especially because I and so many others are starting a couple injury prone strikers.

Reckon Firmino could start against better teams when Klopp will rely on him for pressing and defensive contribution. Jota should be good for a nice run in the starting 11.

I don’t want to use up the third Liverpool slot and have to take a -4 to shoehorn Jota in (if he becomes necessary). TAA and Salah will hopefully be enough cover and Tsimikas just feels like a transfer waiting to happen

100%. Surprised so many decent fpl players think Tsimikas is a good pick when in reality he'll be non playing 4.0 bench fodder when Robertson returns in 3-4 gameweeks. At least Jota gets minutes if he doesn't start or switching out leaves you with 7.5.

    What's better in your opinion:

    A) Coufal + Benrahma + 4.5 forward and playing 3-5-2
    B) Ayling/Veltman + 4.5 mid + Toney and playing 3-4-3

The other two strikers are Ings and Antonio for what it's worth.

I think A in terms of structure (don't like being locked into Toney). Triple WHU seems excessive though?

        • 8 Years
        5 years, 11 days ago

Cheers! Triple WHU indeed looks excessive. The problem with that is that I like Benrahma over Sarr and Harrison to start with and there is no better pick than Coufal at 5.0 at the moment. Maybe Regulion after GW1. Other than that, I do like Toney but I fancy the flexibility in the 6.0 mid price range. Guess I'll decide on friday.

I’m concerned Brentford will struggle but worth a punt I think. Armstrong should come in at 6.5 or lower, pukki, benteke etc all around same price, even Rodrigo for Leeds maybe. I’m not set on Toney but I think he’s a decent option, I don’t like having the non playing 4.5 striker, leaves bench light especially when going with the 4 Liverpool defender.

          1. DIMITRIS
            • 8 Years
            5 years, 11 days ago

I agree with you that 4.5 non playing forward weakens the bench, but on the other hand I fancy more the likes of Harrison, Sarr, Benrahma, ESR, Soucek over the Benteke, Pukki, Rodrigo (although he's the best pick of the bunch imo) and Armstrong. On the other hand, I'm afraid to go without Toney when he's 30% owned. If he bangs, and I don't have him, I'm in trouble. Than I would need to find an midfielder at the same price who can follow his returnes.
Either way, thanks for answering me. Good luck and cheers!

Is anyone else going without Bruno?

I just find my team is much better not spending 12m on Bruno. I'm sort of relying on him not getting as many penalties and it could backfire if he starts really well against Leeds but I'm hoping Greenwood can take some points away from him.

GW1 BB unsurprisingly leads to benching headaches down the line :

    A) Smith Rowe (bre) and Mahrez (tot) - also have Gundogan - and fewer benching heachaches in GWs 2-3

    B) Barnes (WOL) and Greenwood (SOT) - and a couple of tricky decisions GWs 2-3 benching one from Toney, Benrahma, Greenwood or Barnes

      • 8 Years
      5 years, 11 days ago

Realise it's unhelpful if you've already decided, but is GW1 BB the best approach?

I get not obsessing over the doubles - I've fallen foul of that myself - but later in the season you're more likely to have higher TV and therefore it's easier to have 14/15 reliable starters without sacrifices elsewhere. Just a thought!

      1. devoncop
        • 11 Years
        5 years, 11 days ago

I am also BB GW1 and there is no difficulty at all getting 15 reliable good quality starters if you ditch Bruno as I have.

If Bruno,TAA and Salah are all none negotiable then maybe you have a point.

Didn't say it wasn't possible or a good idea. Just questioning if it's the best option.

If following with a wildcard not long after then it's probably as good a time as any.

    A. Mahrez + 4.5FWD (352)
    B. 4.5MID + Ings (343)

Currently have Jiménez in my draft. He has a 'tough' opening 3 of lei, TOT, MNU. After that it's a really nice run of games. I think £7.5 is an excellent price for him - a great striker who plays every match, who was in many teams before his injury, and has pens. I can see why many will plan to get him in GW4, but there could be other fires to put out by then.

    Anyone else considering Jimenez?

    TAA // Digne // Godfrey // Semedo // White

    Salah // Son // Pépé // Greenwood // Sarr

    Antonio // Toney // Mateta

    Thanks in advance guys !

Arsenal looking to sign Ramsdale. Confident on Everton defence?

Didn't realise Arsenal were in for Ramsdale, may switch to another 5.0 keeper (Schmeichel/Meslier my only real options). Digne and Godfrey were two of the most in-form defs towards the end of last season, and with the fixtures Everton have to start this one I think it could really pay off.

Ramsdale won't be the starter, don't let that put you off Leno

I still think Ramsdale will put enough pressure on Leno to make Leno no longer worth it (as we saw with the Ryan/Leno rotation last season)

Prefer Meslier in the 5.0 bracket.

Fair enough. I think it'll take Benitez longer than expected to improve the team. I don't have any of their players at the moment

I don’t understand the transfer at all then. Why spend 30 mil for a backup keeper… especially since we’re out of Europe, so depth in positions like Gk surely isn’t important…

Just moved out Mahrez and Benrahma

Brought in Barnes and … Torres

He was a bit crap against Leicester but with Kane up in the air and Jesus only just returning to training then I can see him being a good short term bet. He’s got goals and assists in him - especially after a good end to last season.

    Thoughts??

Just a gut feeling that it will be Ferran Torrest at Norwich with Sterling taking up his false 9 position.

More of a punt than other city assets. Didn’t notice him in the community shield at all but also has goals and assists like you say. Could pay off but defo risky!

Has any EPL rookie striker ever been as popular pre-GW1 as Toney seems to be now?

Love the guy (see avatar), but very much a wait and see for me. Far easier to get to him than away from him.
