New Manchester United signing Jadon Sancho (£9.5m) is only among the substitutes as the Red Devils open their 2021/22 Premier League campaign at home to Leeds United.

“It is too soon [for Jadon] to start. He’s had holidays after the Euros, he’s been ill and he’s [only] been training with us four days. It’s not really enough to be playing 90 minutes against Leeds but he’s ready to come on and make a difference.

“Anthony [Martial], as well, is working on his fitness, he’s been injured for five months. He’s only played 45 minutes since March, so it’s not fair on him to start the first game today.” – Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, ahead of kick-off

Sancho’s Fantasy Premier League (FPL) ownership of 10% is dwarfed by that of two of his teammates, who both feature in more than one in two FPL squads.

The 50%+ owned Bruno Fernandes (£12.0m) and Luke Shaw (£5.5m) both start this afternoon in a familiar-looking line-up, with the ‘McFred’ double-pivot still in place despite much pre-season talk of a 4-3-3 evolution and Leeds specialist Daniel James (£6.0m) again selected to face the Whites.

Mason Greenwood (£7.5m) leads the line for the hosts in the absence of Edinson Cavani (£8.5m), who is curiously the sixth-most captained player of Gameweek 1 despite his red flag.

As for Leeds, Junior Firpo (£5.0m) may be fit but he is not in Marcelo Bielsa’s starting XI and has to be content with a place among the substitutes.

Stuart Dallas (£5.5m) starts at left-back instead, which has a knock-on effect in midfield as Mateusz Klich (£5.5m) and Rodrigo (£6.0m) make up a rather attacking-looking core.

Robin Koch (£4.5m) is stationed in front of the back four, as the late return to pre-season training of Kalvin Phillips (£5.0m) sees the England international benched for this Saturday curtain-raiser.

“Phillips has done half the work of his teammates and with Junior, [his preparation] was also interrupted for a few days.” – Marcelo Bielsa, ahead of kick-off

Patrick Bamford (£8.0m), Raphinha (£6.5m) and Luke Ayling (£4.5m), all of whom have double-digit FPL ownerships, are also part of their manager’s line-up.

The Red Devils won this fixture 6-2 last season, with Fernandes racking up 17 points in the process.

Shaw created eight chances against Leeds across the two games between the clubs, a total not beaten by any other player.

LINE-UPS

Man Utd XI: De Gea, Wan-Bissaka, Maguire, Lindelof, Shaw, Fred, McTominay, James, Fernandes, Pogba, Greenwood.

Subs: Heaton, Mata, Martial, Pereira, Dalot, Sancho, Matic, Williams, Van de Beek

Leeds XI: Meslier, Ayling, Struijk, Cooper, Dallas, Klich, Koch, Raphinha, Rodrigo, Harrison, Bamford.

Subs: Klaesson, Firpo, Forshaw, Roberts, Costa, Phillips, Summerville, Greenwood, Shackleton

You’re going to captain him over Salah v Norwich/Burnley? Son has the best fixture GW3. People seem to forget the team you initially select is not permanent and there is merit in targeting favourable fixtures

The quality of a decision is fixed once it's made - outcomes don't change it.

Of course it could be the case (which I believe) that Fernandes is pretty much essential but this goal doesn't prove that

As a Shaw & Greenwood owner but no Bruno I feel a little bit unlucky after that first half. Greenwood could have had a G&A & Shaw has looked dangerous.

Execution hasn't quite been there but still put some decent crosses in tbf, he doesn't look entirely on it and still could have had points. Certainly better than Harrison who hasn't even had a sniff

Theo Walcott has played 15 seasons in the Premier League.

                  Of those 15, he's returned a combined G+A over 10 on... 4 occasions.

                  1. @persecuted_by_mods
                      4 years, 6 months ago

Relative to Dan James mate and also as an aside he's still in fpl, take a look at his minutes played on those seasons, injury prone was his issue, getting decent goals and assists never was

Can tell there’s a lot of new Shaw owners about. He’s going to end up with 2 pts unfortunately and if he does get a clean sheet he’ll end up with a yellow. It’s just how things work. Always looks like he’ll get an attacking return but very rarely does

You are living in the past mate! Have you not watched him in more recent times. United defence is going to be much better with Varane also.

I’m talking about recent times. 2nd half of last season. He’s someone who always looks good and plays well but fails to turn it into FPL points.

You have to think Varane will boost their CS odds though. Couple that with Shaws chances created will push him into the BAPS without attacking returns. He has been on a significant upward trajectory recently and will only get better. Certainly will finish in the top 5 fpl defenders this season imo.

Top 5 for sure. Varane will improve the defence too but he’s always created crazy amounts of chances but never any big chances. He’s a quantity over quality guy.

They’ll be worse off with Cavani. I’ve noticed with Cavani playing Bruno tends to play a lot deeper. I wasn’t going to get him until I noticed he was out. With Martial/Greenwood up top Bruno is practically a second striker.

I understand what you are saying and not disagreeing but if his goal threat is decreased, his assist potential has increased. Rashford and Sancho will earn enough penalties to keep the goals coming.

Yeah. Cavani actually knows how to have a presence on the box so there's less need for him to perform as a shadow striker.

Greenwood & Martial central do not do the job as well, hence the support is needed.

Absolutely no connection to how I watch the game but American adverts are so weird.

Just saw a beer commercial with someone described as a 'war hero' promoting it.

There's a lot of talk about making a flexible team by hitting "price points", but I've always found flexibility comes from keeping your money in big piles. It's easier to move around.

So small margins. To go brunoless would’ve been accepted if Greenwood scored or assisted.

Hi all, bit of a weird one but since the game updated yesterday I’ve been on 8 points despite having no players play. Now I should actually be on 8 points but it’s showing as 16…It’s not counting the extra 8 in my league but just annoying, any ideas?!
