Suspensions

We’re stepping up the frequency of our Suspension Tightrope articles as we approach Christmas, with the yellow cards steadily racking up for numerous Premier League players and the threat of a one-match ban looming.

There are a grand total of 29 Fantasy Premier League assets (FPL) who are now just one booking away from a ban, while four players were handed their fifth cautions of the campaign at the weekend and will miss Gameweek 16 as a consequence.

The yellow card amnesty is not until after the completion of a team’s 19th league fixture (more on that later), after which the threshold moves up from five to ten bookings.

Those FPL players who are already sitting on three and especially four cautions still have some time before they are in the clear, then.

CURRENTLY SUSPENDED

FPL Gameweek 15 review: 10

Shane Duffy (£4.2m), Sergi Canos (£5.5m) and Southampton pair Mohammed Salisu (£4.5m) and Oriol Romeu (£4.5m) are the four players who will be absent in Gameweek 16 due to yellow card accumulation.

The most notable Fantasy name from that quartet is, of course, Duffy, who still sits in over 18% of FPL squads overall and in around 10% of squads within the top 10,000.

ON FOUR YELLOW CARDS

Raphinha (£6.7m), who features in more than one in five FPL squads overall and in over 60% of the top 10k teams, joined the throng of players on four yellow cards after Gameweek 16 and is now just a booking away from a ban.

Joao Cancelo (£6.8m), Callum Wilson (£7.5m), Bruno Fernandes (£11.6m) and Conor Gallagher (£6.1m) were already walking the tightrope and managed to avoid a caution at the weekend.

There are some notable bench fodder names on the verge of unavailability, too, including Yves Bissouma (£4.4m), Josh Brownhill (£4.4m), Joel Veltman (£4.3m) and Mathias Normann (£4.5m).

ON THREE YELLOW CARDS

There’s less to sweat about if your player is on three bookings: most of them will just have to avoid picking up two bookings in the next four Gameweeks to dodge a ban.

There are 39 players in total on the above list, with owners of Michail Antonio (£7.9m), Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.3m), Bernardo Silva (£7.5m), Reece James (£6.2m) and Marcos Alonso (£5.7m) unlikely to be losing any sleep over their current disciplinary statuses.

WHEN ARE THE CUT-OFF POINTS FOR SUSPENSIONS?

As mentioned in the introduction, the yellow card threshold is raised to ten after a team’s 19th league fixture. That means following the completion of Gameweek 19 for all clubs bar Tottenham Hotspur and Burnley, whose 19th match of the campaign will now fall in Gameweek 20 following last week’s postponement.

Naturally, if there are any further postponements between now and Boxing Day, whether they be weather-related or Covid-enforced, that would affect the above.

The threshold for ten yellow cards is after 32 league matches, which will be April at the earliest.

Players collecting ten bookings before that point will serve a two-game ban.

Punishments for yellow card accumulation are competition-specific, whereas suspensions for dismissals cover all competitive matches.

Telles was incredible for Porto. Definitely one to watch especially if he can keep shaw out (who rr has gone on record a few years ago saying he think united should replace him)

Could eventually get on some corners too. Shades of cancelo in him and I can definitely see him making an impact if he is given a run of games

Telles has always looked so tenacious, would love to find a way to bring him in if he was guaranteed starts.

All of UTD is looking exciting now… Rashford could be golden.

Looking back at Smith-Rowe' goals its hilarious how luck his owners have gotten.

Mostly big deflections and to top it all off even one where the keeper wasnt even in goal LOL

Watford goal came from almost his only touch of the game, and from a thrown-in where Arsenal were supposed to give the ball back to Watford. Told my mate (who owns him) that he was getting lucky, and he's noticed how peripheral he is in the subsequent games and is now trying to ditch.

      1. @persecuted_by_mods
        4 years, 8 months ago

You're focussing on the lucky nature of his goals, yet ignoring all the times he can be counted unlucky to not get a goal or assist

Some are lucky but you make your own luck, he looks threatening to me in most games, always lurking and arriving in the box for tap ins that stats won't show if it doesn't fall to him

        I'm a non owner

Walker is an interesting one. Both will play 4/5 games IMO. Its a 50/50 between them. Both seem to be first choice, offer attacking threat. Both will miss the odd game because of Zinchenko/ Stones

What can I do with this team to climb up the ranks? The team looks great on paper but stuck at 300k after starting the season really well.

If you were WC'ing what would you do? I'm genuinely unsure what I'd build. Came up with this:

    Ramsdale Gunnarsson
    TAA Cancelo James Davies Williams
    Salah Jota Gundogan Bernardo Bowen
    Ronaldo Antonio Locadia

I can't afford Foden over Gundo but I imagine most people probably can't even buy someone more than Gallagher. I could also sell Antonio for King to raise a bit of money.

Just interesting to see where we're headed. The template is definitely in flux.

    1. @persecuted_by_mods
      4 years, 8 months ago

Have 11 of those (different 4.4 to locadia and different cheap gk to gunnarson) without a WC! So template isn't going anywhere just yet, it's small gains with 1-3 differentials

      1. Camzy

This season it's all about maybe 2-3 differentials per XI. The template defense is ridiculously strong. I don't think any serious managers don't have this core:

        TAA Cancelo James
        Salah Jota

That's 5/11 locked in. GKs are mostly Ramsdale. And then the other slots are being tossed around - Son, Bowen, City mids, Wat fwds, Alonso/Reguilon

There are few differentials even though there are quite a few that are worth thinking about:
        Mount, Watkins, United mids etc.

        1. @persecuted_by_mods
          4 years, 8 months ago

Yup agreed, small 1-3 differentials are the key

      My WC atm:

      DDG
      TAA Rudi Canceli
      Salah Son Bilva Bowen
      Wilson Antonio Dennis

      Foster Livra Lamptey Gilmour

0.3m itb, so I can do Wilson to Watkins next week

        4 years, 8 months ago

No a WC team. But I’m planning to have this after Kane to CR7 this week.

        Sanchez, begovic
        Taa, james, Rudi, cancelo, livra
        Salah, jota, bilva, Bowen, esr
        CR7, Antonio, Davis

I am questioning whether Son & Wilson is better value than CR7 & ESR/Bowen

I'm on WC this week and am looking at this:

GK - Sanchez, Steele (wanted to upgrade from Sanchez but not enough $)

D - TAA, Cancelo, James, Davies, Williams (was playing 4 at the back, selling off Rudiger)

M - Salah, Jota, Bernardo, Bowen, Gilmour

      F - Ronaldo, Antonio, King.

      Thoughts?

FWIW I'd take money out of defence on a WC right now and would go for:

      GK 4.6 + 4.0
      Trent Dalot White Livra Johnson
      Salah Jota BSilva Son 4.5
      CR7 Antonio Dennis
      0.3 ITB

CR7 to an emerging Bamford or DCL would be my exit, then upgrade defence to Cancelo/James if I was getting nervous about missing their points

        That's an interesting idea.

I still think James, Cancelo are really important to have so I wouldn't be willing to cut both. But the 4th defender, sure.

Who would you prioritise getting in from this lot?

    Raphina to:

    B) Bowen

    1. @persecuted_by_mods

Bilva has to be priority now, he's playing like a man possessed and city just camp in the opposition's box. Bowen can come in later not like West ham have been flying albeit a good result Vs Chelsea

      Foden.

I'd rather have Foden + one of Bernardo/Gundo than the two #8s.

Bowen is good too but he's effectively a different price bracket. I have Bowen + Gundo currently.

Missed the deadline a few times recently, so my team is all a bit meh. I'd like to ship Raph, Mbeumo, Hwang and possibly Vardy (after this week).

    Ramsdale (Foster)
    TAA Cancelo Dias James (Livra)
    Salah Jota Raphinha Mbeumo (Luiz)
    Vardy Antonio (Hwang)

    2FT £1.1m

    a) Raph + Hwang > Bernardo + Dennis
    b) Raph + Antonio > Son + Broja
    c) Mbeumo > Bowen (roll FT)
    d) Something else

For me; the biggest transfer decision of the season. Will Ronaldo go large? He stuffs up your team somewhat but can any of us afford not to get him? He can be an alternate captain or he can be an epic rotation fail in the busy schedule.

Could be. Still not sure of rotation issues. Dalot could be a low risk possibility that might go sour like Tsimikas. Not so sure on Fred. His game has improved but no guarantee of points IMO

How deep do our benches need to go? I’m up to my armpits and still worried.

Thinking of playing WC this week. If you were playing your WC which players would be locked in and which differential players would you pick?

How does this look (exact money)

    Semedo/Raph/Toney >> James/Bowen/King

Including the Bowen transfer for a hit as am 0.2m short

I went with King a few weeks ago. ATM Dennis looks better.

        Same here 🙁

The King move may be good if Dennis goes AFCON

Dennis is easily the standout player out of the two but bare in mind King plays central, is on penalties & no afcon to worry about.
Knowing all this I went for Dennis last week

Dennis is better. At 5.5m we're getting double digit potential. I went with King because of pens and because Dennis might play at the AFCON.

Used my transfer early to bring in Bernardo.

Is it worth taking a -4 to do Kane to Ronaldo? Have the exact money in the bank (0.1) to do this before I get priced out.

    Ramsdale, Foster
    TAA, James, Cancelo, Alonso, Johnson
    Salah, Jota, Bernardo, Gallagher, Luiz
    Kane, Antonio, King

    Kane and Raphinha to:

    A. Ronaldo
    B. Vardy
    C. Lukaku
    D. Somebody else

    1. Sancho
    2. Rashford
    3. Bilva
    4. Mount
    5. Somebody else

If I went with Kane to Vardy (or somebody cheaper), I could do Raphinha and Gallagher to Bilva and Mount.

3 along with either A or Antonio if you don't own him as hammers have a nice fixture swing now

I find his lack of form disturbing (said in Darth Vader voice) but in theory, this is a good idea.

Ironically enough, the first week I've not made a transfer this season has been by far my worst lol

If this Jesus injury is bad (i.e. out over xmas), who's the natural replacement?

Sterling or Mahrez? Could be a nice differential

I guess Mahrez is the natural replacement on the right, esp if Pep wants to persist with Grealish as F9, but not confident enough to bring him in; would prob switch Jesus to Watkins & Jota to Foden instead

I will wait closer to deadline with doing the transfers. But is Son, Wilson and Toney to Foden, Ronaldo and King good for a -4?
