Fantasy Football Scout community writer Greyhead continues with his series of articles analysing the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) transfers and strategies of some noted Fantasy managers, from serial top 10k finishers to well-known faces.

The Great and The Good this year are the Scouts Joe LepperNeale RiggGeoff Dance and Tom Freeman, FPL Wire’s Zophar, from the Hall of Fame Fabio BorgesFPLMatthewYavuz Kabuk and Tom Stephenson, Blackbox’s Az and Mark Sutherns, FPL “celebrities” LTFPL AndyMagnus Carlsen and FPL General plus last year’s mini-league winner Les Caldwell.

“I don’t know where I’m goin’

But I sure know where I’ve been

Hanging on the promises in songs of yesterday

An’ I’ve made up my mind, I ain’t wasting no more time

Here I go again, here I go again”

Not again. This all feels strangely familiar, as our preparations for the weekend were once again blighted by Covid-19 cases and a match cancellation – even when the action started, it felt like we were repeating everything one more time as VAR grabbed the headlines after a raft of dubious penalty decisions.

Perhaps more alarming was that ominous feeling it is going to get much, much worse as midweek rotation and further Covid chaos beckons, no matter how many hits we take or how much we have boosted our bench strength.

OVERALL PERFORMANCE

The race to be the greatest of ‘The Great and The Good’ is looking to be closer than the Formula One finale as Az regained the advantage over FPL General and Tom Stephenson, but there are still only 11 points separating the top three.

Yet, it was a little further down the table where we find this week’s top performer, as Yavuz Kabuk scored 79 points, gained a green arrow of 75k and moved off the bottom, leaving Mark Sutherns – who probably for his own sanity no longer reads these updates – cast adrift in 15th.

Conor Gallagher (£6.1m) was no doubt the hero for Yavuz with his 15-point haul but Aaron Ramsdale (£5.0m) continued to prove his doubters wrong with a second double-digit return and Antonio Rudiger (£6.1m) was Saturday’s unlikely assist supreme.

Spare a thought for Zophar and Tom Stephenson, who would have been this week’s joint top scorers but for leaving Gallagher’s 15 points on their bench.

TRANSFERS

This is a summary of the transfers for this week :

Az – King, Ronaldo (Toney, Kane)

LTFPL Andy – Ronaldo (Kane)

Fabio Borges – Ronaldo, James, Sissoko, Guaita (Toney, Son, Livramento, Foster)

Joe Lepper – Ronaldo, Bowen (Kane, Raphinha)

Geoff Dance – Antonio, Rashford, King (Brownhill, Kane, Toney)

FPL General – Bowen, Bernardo Silva (Son, Brownhill)

Les Caldwell – De Gea, Dennis, Mount (Steele, Kane, Raphinha)

Magnus Carlsen – Antonio, Cancelo, King, De Gea (Toney, Sanchez, Kane, Williams)

Mark Sutherns – Dennis, Bowen (Toney, Son)

FPL Matthew – Ronaldo, Bernardo Silva, King (Toney, Kane, Raphina)

Neale Rigg – Bowen, Ronaldo (Kane, Raphinha)

Tom Freeman – Ronaldo, Dalot, Guaita (Kane, Regulion, Foster)

Tom Stephenson – King, Ronaldo (Toney, Kane)

Yavuz Kabuk – Bowen, Bernardo Silva (Jota, Raphinha)

Zophar – King, Ronaldo (Kane, Toney)

Hits, hits and more hits as the Spurs postponement plunged The Great and The Good into panic, with 14 of the 15 selling Tottenham players with Magnus Carlsen and Fabio Borges taking their first transfer penalties of the season in style by spending eight points.

Les Caldwell again proved to have impeccable timing: David De Gea (£5.0m), Emmanuel Dennis (£5.8m) and Mason Mount (£7.6m) all provided immediate returns.

TEMPLATE

The template for ‘The Great and The Good’ is as follows, with the number in brackets showing how many teams each player appears in:

Foster (9), Ramsdale (6)

Alexander-Arnold (15), Cancelo (15), James (13), Livramento (11), Alonso (6)

Salah (15), Jota (13), Mbuemo (7), Brownhill (6), Gallagher/Raphinha/Bowen (5)

Antonio (13), King (12), Ronaldo (11)

Unsurprisingly, the forward line has seen an overhaul, as popular transfers of Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.5m) and Joshua King (£5.8m) coming in for Harry Kane (£12.1m) and Ivan Toney (£6.6m) are replicated in the overall squad template.

There appears to be less consensus on the fourth midfield spot. Jarrod Bowen (£6.5m) and Gallagher have joined the debate but did they all forget James Maddison (£6.8m)?

FOLLOWING THE TEMPLATE

As we enter the festive period, I thought it’d be worth investigating ‘The Great and The Good’ squads to see how template they are by using Live FPL (built by Ragabolly) which, along with live rank updates, provides a comparison of your squad against the template. You can read how this is calculated here.

You can see below how the squads compare, plus how this compares to Gameweek 3 when I last had a look under the covers. Bear in mind that the usual guidance is a 50-70% match that allows for a balance of ownership and differential.

There is no doubt that the template is working again as our top three of Az, Tom Stephenson and FPL General have a rating of 86-87%.

If you want differentials then keep an eye on Geoff Dance, Les Caldwell and Tom Freeman, although the latter two were more successful this week, Mount and Diogo Dalot (£4.5m) are good examples of how they have made themselves stand out.

CUP UPDATE

Before I go, as always there were a couple of cup upsets to report on. Kamelista gets the headlines for dumping Mark Sutherns out of the cup, despite being ranked at over two million and having not made a transfer since Gameweek 10.

However, the biggest giant-killing was Khaled Costa, whose score of 74 was enough to see off FPL General – some 5,127,939 places ahead of Costa in the overall rankings.

CONCLUSION

There’s no time to think before we jump into our next round of chaos, with Aston Villa and Manchester United the latest clubs to make us worry about further postponements. Now is not the time to have inactive benches so boost that pine but brace yourself for some seasonal disappointment.

Anyway, that’s all from me for now and remember: don’t have nightmares.

Seems like no one is able to answer that question. Seen a couple asking the same question including myself…

Really crucial as I’m still stuck with Son/Vardy and only hope on the bench is Gelhardt 😀

        Antonio King

        Foster Livramento Davis Cancelo

With Livramento being a doubt, and my only playing sub…

The next 10 GWs are going to be absolute carnage.

Absolutely can plan. They may come unstuck. But it's better than no plan at all.

A more difficult, less predictable game, favours planning IMO

Took a -8 already, annoyingly to ship off players to best price rises that in hindsight, I shouldn't have, made a right old mess of it.

Thoughts on this team? Do I need to do anything else (other than hope)? Any advice on how to fix It over the next few GWs? Having a crisis.

If Utd game off then you have Sanchez unless that game is off too. Williams can cover Dalot for this GW so you may just get away with it.

If Villa Norwich was to be called off (hopefully we know before deadline given early kickoff) would you just start ESR with the hope that he regains his starting spot (I have my doubts with Odegaard form) or switch ESR to Gallagher, who has lovely fixtures the next 4+ weeks

Quite sad what happened to Dele Alli. He had such a potential and he wasted it all. Not everybody has a right attitude to become a star I guess, plenty of such stories in history. I'm hopeful Gallagher won't follow him, from what I heard he has been ultra professional in regard to all aspects of his training. We'll see.

Yeah, like Reece James, Christensen, Mount, Hudson-Odoi, none of them have had a chance to shine at Chelsea, right?

Shining at Palace's level isn't enough for a player like Gallagher. If he thinks he has what it takes to play at an elite club then he will understand that it's a steeper and longer climb to get there.

you just named a few players who have gotten a chance at chelsea but PLENTY of others who were bought then farmed out on loan etc and never made it at all.

Mount is a good example but it's about getting that opportunity. As Chelsea continue to buy foreign players the opportunities are harder and harder

To be fair there have been a lot that never got a chance at Chelsea (as evidenced by them letting the likes of Lukaku, KDB and Salah slip away from them), it was only really under Lampard that a lot of youth got a chance and probably a lot of that was down to the transfer ban (although I still think he would have given them a chance anyway). Chelsea were notorious for exploiting the youth and squad size + loan eligibility and rules in Europe for years before they were curbed.

Totally different; we got top dollar for Lukaku and he was poor when he played for us (still is imho).

The other two were Jose ego jobs, not youth players who didn’t get a chance.

Maybe, but I still think it's indicative of what Chelsea wanted to do in the market with youth / younger talent. Lukaku's case wasn't as simple either as he too was loaned out (twice) before actually being sold

It was a ridiculous comment tbf

You honestly think fighting for his place and earning a spot in one of the top clubs in the world is a detriment to a player’s development? Carrying some championship level squad and having the country romanticize about the parody of the league doesn’t do anything to help a player prepare to play in a top squad or succeed against the worlds best. Ask Jack Grealish.

Look at the original poster. He was comparing Dele Ali and his attitude and saying he hopes that doesn't happen to Connor. So my "ridiculous" comment was suggesting he might be better off in a system like CPL as opposed to Chelsea where he might be limited with opportunities. Nowhere did I say it was a detriment to their development.

Totally different with Grealish where he's bought to a new club for 100m and every incentive for them to play him regularly vs a player out on loan going back to parent club. Chelsea could just as easily say we don't need Connor and look to sell him next season.

We've seen plenty of examples particularly at Chelsea where good up & coming English players don't get a chance at the club because they prefer to buy the likes of Havertz Ziyech etc.

Alli can still recover and have a decent career but that is down to his will and desire to do that. If it doesn't work out then he has only himself to blame. If his career had been messed up by injury then i would agree it is 'sad' but he destroyed it himself so i have no sympathy for him.

Alli still has the technical ability, shooting etc... he just lost all his explosiveness and physicality and now he plays like a player ready for retirement. Lack of effort in training lead him there, sadly though cause he was one of my favourites to watch along with Payet back in the days...

Technically he isn’t great. His best traits were arriving late in the box and getting on the end of moves. Stylistically he’s quite similar to Muller.

I think he’s suffered by trying to be more well rounded and that’s partly down to Poch for changing his position. Should have persisted with him being a second striker, and not a CM

Really a lot of very unpleasant judgment here about a player, when nobody really knows anything much about the person, or why he's failed to fulfill a potential that they have decided he had.

I've tried to stay on top of moves in the last few weeks and I seemed to do best when being more patient in the early weeks of the season, feels too risky to make many changes right now anyway so think I'll just try slow down on moves for a bit

Gallagher/Watkins/Dennis all set to go up in price tonight, so would you make one of these transfers or wait for further news on Man U match? Even if it’s on this team needs help!

    A) Antonio & Mendy —> Dennis & Gallagher (-4)
    B) Ronaldo & Mendy —> Watkins & Gallagher/9.1mid (-4)

    Sanchez*
    Alonso/James/Taa/Cancelo*
    ESR/Salah/Jota/Foden
    Antonio/Ronaldo*

I'm a price chaser who has Benteke over Gallagher, and I'm not even considering the switch until I'm sure of what's happening with my Ronaldo + DDG double-up

I'd roll FT and then sell Jota for funds in GW18

If Man U match is called off, option B with Dennis and Gallagher. Hold the extra funds. You'd need them very soon. Watkins can wait, as Norwich isn't an easy defence to walk through anymore, which affects the chances of a hit paying back

Just before you go jumping onto the Gallagher train , be aware that he is on 4 yellow cards .
Odegaard is cheaper, scored 3 in last 3 games , not got bad fixtures coming up and only 2 yellow cards

normally the risk is fairly small on average, with covid atm the risk is huge

        • 11 Years

Yes it's huge. Though I'd argue the risk isn't small. The risk you'll lose the player you transferred is small, but the risk that something will occur involving your squad, or absolutely any other player in the game that could mean your transfer is no longer the optimal move, that's quite large

        1. lugs
          • 8 Years
          4 years, 4 months ago

yeah that's true i suppose, maybe 9 times out of 10 nothing happens to my transferred in player, but it does happen more frequently a couple of days later something else pops up or i see a better move

            • 11 Years

Yeah. Get in a player, Firmino gets injured and suddenly jota is gold, Robertson gets injured and you have a Liverpool defender for 4.4 double rising. Or any one of dozens of things that can happen. Never been worth the odd 0.1 to me to lose all that info and team value never been an issue

        2. Ze_Austin
          • 7 Years
          4 years, 4 months ago

No, it's not. It's not been for me, in 3 straight years of early transfers across 5 fantasy games... And I'm not lucky. All my transfers are early, if there's a chance of a price rise and the player's already played. It's the way I play, and I chose this path after assessing the risk on a large scale

It's small. But every time it happens, it will look huge. Say, once or twice all season

But if you only make early transfers rarely, you're more exposed to that "1:100" dice roll happening the one time you rolled it

          1. Pacer.
            • 11 Years
            4 years, 4 months ago

I don't even think about the risk to that player as the deciding factor tbh, because it's small. I'm more concerned by all the data I'm conceding to managers who wait. It's a lot harder to assess that impact for a manager who moves early
