Our Scoreboard series rounds up the key goings-on from Tuesday’s Gameweek 17 fixtures, from injury news to stats analysis.

With the swift turnaround between Fantasy Premier League (FPL) deadlines, the Scoreboard articles will take the place of the usual Scout Notes throughout December.

The graphics below are taken from LiveFPL, Ragabolly’s excellent and ever-expanding website, and our own Premium Members Area.

GOALS, ASSISTS, BONUS

INJURIES AND BANS

Bernardo Silva (£7.7m) was withdrawn at half-time tonight, with his team already 3-0 up, which Pep Guardiola touched on in his post-match interview:

“He had muscular niggles. Nothing was injured but he was a little bit uncomfortable. But at 3-0 we didn’t want to take the risk.”

Kyle Walker (£5.5m) was a surprise absentee on the night, as he wasn’t deemed fit enough to make the matchday squad.

Elsewhere, Ozan Kabak (£4.4m) went down holding his left ankle for Norwich City, and was promptly replaced, adding to the Canaries mounting injury list, while Jamie Shackleton (£4.4m) also hobbled off for Leeds United.

At Aston Villa, Jed Steer (£4.0m), Morgan Sanson (£5.0m), Anwar El Ghazi (£5.6m) and Keinan Davis (£4.5m) were all absent from the matchday squad, with Steven Gerrard saying yesterday that two members of his first-team had tested positive for Covid-19.

It was also revealed prior to kick-off that Marvelous Nakamba (£4.5m) could be ruled out for the rest of the Premier League campaign, after sustaining a knee injury against Liverpool at the weekend.

“We’ve got a rough idea (on the timeframe) but I don’t want to get it wrong and I don’t want to put unnecessary pressure on the medical staff but he’ll certainly be missing for a number of months.” – Steven Gerrard on Marvelous Nakamba

On the suspension front, Junior Firpo (£4.7m) will miss Gameweek 18, having picked up his fifth yellow card of the season tonight.

Ruben Dias (£6.1m), plus Norwich duo Max Aarons (£4.3m) and Brandon Williams (£3.9m), are also just one caution away from a ban, after picking up bookings.

However, City can at least welcome Joao Cancelo (£6.8m) back, having served his one-match suspension against Leeds.

GAMEWEEK 17 TAKEAWAYS

FOUR WINS IN SIX FOR GERRARD

Six games in for Steven Gerrard as Aston Villa manager, and he’s picked up 12 points with wins against Brighton and Hove Albion, Crystal Palace, Leicester City and Norwich City, with their only losses arriving against the current top two – Manchester City and Liverpool. It’s been a hugely encouraging start for the former Liverpool man, with appealing fixtures against Burnley and Leeds United still to come before the end of the year.

At Carrow Road, Ollie Watkins (£7.6m) produced his first double-figure haul of the season, courtesy of a goal, assist and maximum bonus, while budget midfielder Jacob Ramsey (£4.5m) – who has now started five of Gerrard’s first six matches in charge – also found the back of the net in an excellent all-round display.

It was also notable just how advanced Villa’s full-backs were on the night, especially Matty Cash (£5.0m), who touched the ball six times inside Norwich’s penalty area, more than any other player bar Watkins.

Aston Villa’s average position map v Norwich City in Gameweek 17

CITY HIT SEVEN AS DE BRUYNE AND FODEN SHINE

In a stunning performance, Man City completely outclassed Leeds in Gameweek 17, with midfielders Kevin De Bruyne (£11.8m), Riyad Mahrez (£8.6m), Phil Foden (£8.0m), Jack Grealish (£7.6m), Ilkay Gundogan (£7.3m) and Rodri (£5.5m) all amongst the points.

For Foden, his 12-point haul is his best since Brighton away in Gameweek 9, while tonight’s win also signalled the return of De Bruyne, who was simply irresistible from his no. 8 role, scoring twice from a match-high nine shots. His performance could have implications for Bernardo Silva and Gundogan, too, with the three players essentially competing for the two central attacking midfield slots in Pep Guardiola’s 4-3-3 formation.

“A lot has happened this year, a little bit out of out of my control. The only thing I could do is work hard and come back as quick as possible. It’s unfortunate with everything that has happened and at the time I was coming back I got Covid. It happened and now we are working hard to come back to a good level.” – Kevin De Bruyne

ATTACKING STRUGGLES CONTINUE AT NORWICH

Norwich City’s struggles in the final-third continued on Tuesday, as they lost 2-0 to Aston Villa at Carrow Road. As a result, they have now failed to find the back of the net in 11 of their 17 league fixtures this season, scoring just eight goals overall, while their 14.02 non-penalty expected goals (xG) total is worse than any other top-flight side.

The absentees are stacking up, too, with eight players missing against Villa due to various injuries and Covid, something Dean Smith touched on after the match:

“It looked like we were playing low-risk football, which is not what we asked. We’re missing around eight players that could play in the first team at the moment. The last few games have been frustrating because of our finishing. Tonight, it was frustrating because of our first-half performance. You’re not going to win anything playing like that.”

Foden VC here. Good to have that in the bank if Salah is rested (which won't happen!) Besides I expect Salah will match or beat those 12 points

I captained Antonio for what I think was 12 points in I think GW9. I was happy. Salah went onto score a hat-trick and get an assist. I wouldn’t go early with these sorts of posts.

Actually he’s got 12 points pre them being doubled for captaincy. Much better (though still a bit pre-emptive)

I'm kind of tempted. Also considering Foden but cancelo more assured of a start I guess. Will spurs still be decimated or still recovering from covid though? As always Salah can punish you severely and I'm still not over his 24 pointer at MUN when I capped havertz

I own Foden as well but yeah exactly, Cancelo guaranteed to start after his suspension.

I also capped Havertz that week. It was painful and I've captained Salah every week since then but I think this week could be a high reward opportunity.

Isn't that what we thought last time? 😀 I'm with you though. My normal style is to take some risks on captaincy if an opportunity presents and this certainly looks like one. I think it's a good shout personally.

I do expect him to start, but it's a bit odd to assumed that's 'guaranteed' when the team just won 7-0 without him.

They had 50% of the ball but they did absolutely nothing with it, very very passive.
To me, they played with zero dare in a bid to prevent conceding. sideways passing, a lot of it.

Get Bowen. Talk of Antonio being dropped to give him a breather and to allow Fornals a start. Allows us to play with more fluidity.

Any reason why Lanzini has started ahead of Fornals recently? Didnt think Fornals has played bad but always thought Lanzini was class

Form I guess, Lanzini has been playing well. Fornals was just unlucky and I assume Moyes wanted to start Antonio as a focal point against Burnley, what with them being physical.

If this was to be the case you would imagine Bowen plays the 9 correct?
Lanzini is an intriguing option as he has penalties, who do you think takes them if he is not on the pitch?

Wouldnt say essential, more of a differential at this point. But you know one or two of them will come good soon and become template 85% owned in the top 10k, so better get on them before they haul

yeah I think were looking for the new benrahma from the start of the season, maybe Bowen is the one or Lanzini but a double up is def on the cards, I got Bilva in this week and probably shd have held off the hit and got a west ham mid in for the weekend might still do that if the knock seems more than that, hopefully pep gives some decent insight but wouldnt hold my breath on that one.

Just rewatched the City highlights. Man, Foden was involved, but lucky to come away with the goal, Mesliers and Dallas howler in the same play gifts the goal to Foden. Foden unlucky not to get another assist though. And Bernardo should've had a goal with the point blank chance he fluffed.

    1. ZimZalabim

foden had a shot that went inches past the post and had an offside goal that he really shd have stayed on for was cms in it, goal itself was fortunate and bilva shd have scored as well.

Foden looked really good and there were other moments when he was in great positions in the middle when he didnt get the ball on another day he easily could have got a 24 point type of return.

Oh yeah I agree he was involved and looked good. Just thinking his goal was entirely down to the mistakes of the other team and fortunate to get it.

His shot that went wide and offside goal were down to him at the end of the day. Still a great FPL asset but I think it all comes down to minutes with these City mids.

Foden had a goal ruled out for offside by half a foot and in all their intricate play didn't get an assist apart from the corner.
      It could've been more.

As I said last week, he looked very lively when he came on against Wolves.

Yeah could've been more, and could've been less too. I think all the City mids will look great with minutes. Just about who gets more minutes, and riding your chosen player through the 1pters when they come

Having played 90 minutes in a 7-0 win I don't think it could've been much less, to be honest.

i mean if Dallas made the clearance, then Foden would only have the one assist and we'd be talking about a 6 pointer in a 7-0

Not trying to say Foden is not a great asset btw, just think his goal today came down to his opponent, and his near misses came down to him missing today.

              That's not reality though.
If Dallas clears the goal off the line the ball is not in the centre of the pitch for a kick-off, i.e. the events of the game are completely different if you take something away.

too early to plan this many options, but Id be looking at getting out of the double chelsea defence. Or if you dont fancy that just go Livra to Dalot or something. Davis to Watkins gives you a lot of benching headaches that is only needed if we know cancellations are happening for the GW

      2 & 3 for me.
Bowen for the good fixture run and Davis to Watkins (and bench King most weeks) is good for stronger bench through the hectic/xmas/covid season.
It'll be Bilva's turn again soon, so I'd be patient with your City mid and not point chase Foden.

I may be confused as to the actual rules here. Wondering if someone could set me straight please.

Ashley Young left the field with 59:07 on the clock vs Norwich. His number 18 came up at 58:39, but again, left the field for Ings at 59:07.

Should he be granted 59 minutes or 60 and a clean sheet???

Note: I do not own Ashley Young in FPL 🙂
I am not that bold, just picked him up for one game in another draft league.

59:07 is technically in the 60th minute (same as 00:07 is is the 1st minute), but you need to make it over 60 for the CS

I was born on April 20th and I share a birthday with Adolf Hitler; and if I read The Sun newspaper I was deemed to be an Aries but if I read The Mirror I was deemed to be a Taurus.
Both of those papers are Gutter press mind, and I don't believe a word any of them says anymore. Obviously when Maxwell slipped off the back of his yaght after conning tens of thousands of British working class men and women out of their pensions.it left a sour note; And his daughter, Ghaislaine, currently on trial as Epstein's girl trafficker (alledgedly)........will probably end up as dead as Jimmy Saville's Knighthood floating in a pile of Etonian Codswallop.
Like those Heath Papers that went "missing" in The Westminster Palace Libraries. Probably swimming with Bin Laden right now. Innit.

        I believe 00:01 - 00:59 is the “first minute.”
If a player was subbed after 00:30, they would be credited with 1 minute, not 0 minutes. That is according to commentators though. Like “we are entering the 60th minute (at 59:01). Perhaps for fantasy stats a player must complete 60 full minutes? Just not sure of the rules here.

It's really hard to say. Everton are gash and missing a lot of players. Richa injured for a bit now and not sure on DCL's return date.
Such a good long fixture run though and they have to improve soon!

Yeh, if you have precisely zero understanding of football. The alternative take is to marvel at how Pep analysed the way Leeds play with their man-marking system and sent out an unusual formation that aimed to tear Leeds apart. Which is exactly what happened - the fluidity of the City side mesmerised and cut through Leeds, who tend not to be able to adjust in-game to Bielsa's complex methods. So, pointless conspiracy or genius of Pep - up to you.

    Sanchez (Steele)
    TAA James Cancelo (Livra) (Reguilon)
    Salah Bilva Bowen Mount ESR
    Ronaldo Dennis (Pukki)

Not happy owning Pukki and I want Watkins and Son. The only way for both is to lose Ronaldo.
If all is looking well in terms of games etc, should I do:

    a) Ronaldo to Watkins (then ESR/Mount to Son in GW19)
    b) Pukki to Watkins and don't bother with Son (Keeping Ronaldo)
