Burnely v Watford has become the second Gameweek 17 fixture to be postponed because of Covid-19.

A coronavirus outbreak in the Hornets’ squad has led to the match, which was scheduled to be played on Wednesday evening, being postponed just two and a half hours before kick-off.

The visitors said they had an “insufficient number of first-team players” to fulfill the fixture.

Tuesday’s game between Brentford and Manchester United fell by the wayside as a result of the Red Devils reporting a string of positive tests, while the Gameweek 16 clash between Brighton and Hove Albion and a badly-hit Tottenham Hotspur was similarly affected at the weekend.

Given how short notice this postponement was, more Gameweek 17 cancellations certainly can’t be ruled out – Spurs and Leicester City, for example, both requested that their game on Thursday evening be called off but were rebuffed by the Premier League.

Watford’s Gameweek 18 clash with Crystal Palace is surely in significant doubt, too, given how quick the turnarounds are between games.

A statement from the Hornets read:

The decision was taken following guidance from medical advisers due to an ongoing COVID-19 outbreak within Watford’s squad. As a result, the club has an insufficient number of First Team players available to fulfil the match.

The Premier League understands this decision will disappoint and frustrate fans who were due to attend this evening’s game and apologises for the inconvenience and disruption caused at such short notice.

In considering any application to postpone, the Board considers a range of sporting and medical factors. Each decision is taken on a case-by-case basis with everyone’s health of utmost importance

In light of the recent rise in COVID-19 cases across the country, the Premier League has reintroduced Emergency Measures. These include protocols such as more frequent testing, wearing face coverings while indoors, observing social distancing and limiting treatment time.

More postponements look inevitable: on Monday, it was announced that there were 42 new positive cases among players and staff – the highest weekly figure since records began last May and 26 more than the previous high in 2021/22.

Burnley join Spurs, Brighton and Chelsea in having two postponed matches that still need to be rearranged:

POSTPONED MATCHES STILL TO BE REARRANGED
  • Burnley v Tottenham Hotspur (weather)
  • Brighton and Hove Albion v Tottenham Hotspur (Covid)
  • Brentford v Manchester United (Covid)
  • Burnley v Watford (Covid)
  • Brighton and Hove Albion v Chelsea (Club World Cup)
  • Chelsea v Arsenal (Club World Cup)

Early thoughts, obviously a lot can change as the week goes on...

    Ramsdale
    TAA James Alonso Cancelo
    Salah Jota Bilva Gallagher
    Antonio King

    Foster Raphinha Livramento Davis

    2FT, 5.0itb

    1. Raphinha >> Foden (bench King)
    2. Raphinha >> Bowen (bench King)
    3. Davis >> Watkins (bench King)
    4. Davis Raphinha >> Watkins Foden (bench King and Alonso)

Although 4 gives a massive benching headache is it required with all the postponements?!

    Thanks all.

Because he’s attempting to carry an out of form leeds, and there’s better options in Foden and Bowen imo

Klopp quoted in the Telegraph sports pages.

“I think it would be pretty helpful if we really know what the situation is,” said Klopp.

“From my point of view, I don’t understand 100 percent why we are not more open. A lot of people catch covid at the moment. That is how it is. If I catch it, and hopefully not, I would be completely fine to tell people I have it. Why do we hide it - why does nobody know the number of players who have it? It is always a little bit like ‘some staff’ and ‘some players’.

“Come on, say it, and then everyone can understand why you are not able to play and these kinds of things. I would prefer that but I am not sure whether from a legal point of view that is possible. It would be helpful. We just have no idea. We play Tottenham on Sunday and we have no idea who is available - ok they play tomorrow night so we might have a little idea - but apart from that we have no idea who is able to play or not.

“That is different to usual preparations for a game. It is not the most important subject but it shows the information could be slightly different. I don’t know if that is possible from a legal point of view, but we are all in the same situation as human beings and I really think nobody should hide.”

Klopp says Liverpool have reported no recent positive Covid tests, and everyone working at the club’s AXA Training Ground has been at least double vaccinated, with the majority also receiving their booster jab already.

The German coach says players and staff believe being vaccinated is a show of ‘solidarity’.

“It is absolutely helpful when people around you know you are not in the best place so they can help you,” he said.

“But if people don’t know they can doubt it, or whatever, that is why I think a bit more transparency would be helpful.

“We get tested every day before we arrive and if it is negative we are allowed into the training ground. Like the whole world we are concerned, but we do what we can. Everyone eligible is boosted.

“The whole vaccination process is a question of solidarity, loyalty and togetherness. We have a chance to help not only ourselves, but other people. There are not two possible answers. There is only one answer. You do it.”

I think people are foolish not to be vaccinated, but we do advocate 'choice' and free will as as a society. Solidarity is a good word, and I like it, but I don't like it when it's used as a mantra to overwhelm the quiet or non-quiet voice. Noone knows how this will end or unveil itself. The only thing I'm sure about is that we don't know enough and our reasoning is weak.

Genuine open question / discussion point here. Are we getting into integrity of the competition territory here with the amount of cancellations and how are FPL prepared?

I’ve personally been stung by the cancellations now a few times this season w/BURvSPURS forcing 4 blank players, then w/BRIvSPURS forcing a -16 hit to replace, then using 2 FT to accommodate w/UTDvBRE. Last season on occasion I’ve been the beneficiary and loser of these situations so you take the rough with the smooth but I’m finding that it is now massively disadvantages the planned FPL player.

Can’t help but feel we could have mega DGW & TGW where the planned player is then punished double - first the loss on the GW and second as other players can now take advantage bringing those players in. It’s not even Christmas and we have 2x Burnley, 2x Chelsea, 2x Brighton, 2x Spurs and 1x United/Brentford/Watford/Arsenal to fit in with more FAC/LC to come too. At what point does the integrity of competition become impacted before an intervention needed?

      Was thinking of what I would / could do if I were too dog at FPL;

1/ Free Hit in GW for players lost to cancelled fixtures to a max of 3 players?
2/ When fixtures are eventually fulfilled any teams with players from cancelled teams submitted in those GW will be retrospectively applied?
3/ Covid Free Hit Pass akin to WC?

Welcome debate and thoughts on topic.

Agree rub of green, I’ve been good and bad side of it but just wondering if a 4th chip mitigates the impact somewhat.

You didn’t have to take a -16, you could have kept those players. Every season is the same with double game weeks and drafting in players who have 2 games. Just there are more now.

100% the -16 was my decision and I’m not blaming FPL for that I’m just asking at what point does a 4th chip or other solution become merited. With more DGW and TGW in play is 2 WC, 1 FH, 1 BB and 1 TC sufficient?

But it’s similar to last season, so what has changed?

Yeah the integrity of FPL is currently non-existant. But it’s only a game, that is free to play.

It’s just a game, asking given what we’ve seen does there need to be more flex in the game to meet the circumstances / environment. Trying to think of changes to the PL in the two periods and could only think of the 3 sub / 5 sub rule changes, imagine for the integrity of the PL itself they’ll have to declare what merits a cancellation and what doesn’t as Spurs/Leicester missing 15/46 squad and it was declined but Watford ‘couldn’t field a team’ and that was cancelled. These games later in season post transfer window could have big say on relegation.

just watched a Dr Jhon Campbell video on Youtube where he is saying the UK can expect up to a million cases per day pretty soon, so at that rate either the season will be suspended or everybody's team will be massively effected so it will be fair in that sense

Could balance it out alright however making changes mid season would have lots up in arms you’d imagine, agree though the case numbers will mean more and more postponements.

Implement a COVID chip probably a better name will be bashed around the table “unforeseen circumstances” chip.

Tables have turned all about being reactive than pro active. Planning out the window.

Agree on the reactive piece. Even the proactive solution now is to be reactive. Like the idea of UC Chip.

Its a game at the end of the day.

Covid makes it a bit of joke, but fpl is not going make much difference in the grand scheme of things.

Just have a * beside your ranks for the covid seasons!

I agree that it disadvantages planners because it's literally a 1-GW-at-a-time crapshoot atm, and weeks of planning transfers/budgets can go out of the window in an instant with a COVID postponement that knocks your players out of action for 2-3 games.

I don't think there'll be any concessions made by FPL unless there's another circuit breaker scenario by the PL itself. It is what it is. I know others seem to thrive in this chaos, but personally my skillset as an FPL player is not suited to Covid, and it's no coincidence that the past 2 seasons have been my worst ones in years by an absolute mile.

I agree it’s just a game but it’s a game for +8m people with businesses / tools / money leagues etc built around it ie FFS and the likes. I’ll happily admit I take it far too serious and that I’ve had my luck and bad luck with these postponements - my main Q was just about at what point does it start to ruin the game entirely and what solutions could FPL bring to mitigate, something many in my mini leagues have discussed so was keen to see the forums thoughts.

Agree FPL unlikely to change / concede anything mid season.

I’ve also had two stinker seasons but won a mini league by 1 pt on final day of season driven by covid luck and bad luck and feel dirty about it! Asterisk all the way!

Free game that many of us (myself included) take way too seriously to be considered healthy.

Don't think they will, or even need to do anything in the current circumstances. Precedent has been set for a wildcard for all if the season pauses indefinitely again, but that's all we're gonna get.

I suggested yesterday that I think we are into territory where they need to find a workable way to increase squad size or game appeal will disappear for a hardcore of players

Love this idea of increased squad size, not heard this mentioned before. Agree appeal of game will fade when it’s roulette every week.

Would mean changing the website, app, coding, rules - it ain't going to happen mid season.

That's fine, as long as any of these changes are put in ahead of time for next year.
Play the game in front of you. Whingers want FPL Towers to give them a do-over. Man up.

We're all in the same boat, facing the same issues. Complicating the game by introducing free passes, retrospective point allocations, extra wildcards etc. becomes frustrating in my opinion and would be more likely to make me lose interest in the remainder of the season.

I reckon people simply need to suck it up and get on with it.

That isn't the case. The issues people face are game cancellations and they impact people randomly, and it's pretty severe and really not a swings and roundabouts thing. Not only do the people impacted get wacked but those who are less impacted are then best placed to take advantage of games in hand. It's destroying the game integrity (what integrity that a game which is already heavily influenced by luck has) and they need to find a way to manage that. Finding a way to have larger workable squads looks the best way

Simplest option would be a bigger bench ... just 3 players aren't enough

Maybe we could have and extra 10m and need to fill 5 outfield bench places

Big part of the problem is unvaccinated players have to self isolate if someone in the squad tests positive if they have had contact with them as per covid rules regardless if they've got it or not.
Believe there are a large numbers of prem players who are not vaccinated, with Liverpool being maybe one of the only teams that are fully vaccinated through out

        Don't think so.

They have daily testing in the Premier League i believe.

Klopp said so, to enter the training facilities without risking the squad and staff.
