Aston Villa v Burnley has become the sixth Gameweek 18 fixture to be called off.

The announcement was made less than an hour before the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) deadline was due to pass.

As a result of the postponement at Villa Park, the Gameweek 18 deadline is now moved to 16:00 GMT.

Interestingly, it was not just Covid-19 cases but also “injuries and illness” that were cited as the reason for the game being postponed.

A Premier League statement said:

After reviewing all the new information provided by Aston Villa this morning and receiving separate medical advice, the Board approved the request as a result of the club not having enough players to field a team. This decision was based on the number of COVID-19 cases, injuries and illness.

The League understands the decision to postpone the match at such short notice will frustrate and disappoint supporters, and apologises for the inconvenience and disruption caused.

The remaining four Premier League matches due to be played this weekend are currently scheduled to proceed as planned.

The Board assesses applications to postpone matches on a case-by-case basis, based on existing rules and COVID-19 postponement guidance issued to all clubs.

It will assess a number of factors, including the ability of a club to field a team; the status, severity and potential impact of the COVID-19 outbreak at the club; and the ability of the players to safely prepare for and play the match. The Board must also consider the wider risks to the opposition and other people the club representatives may come into contact with.

With the health and wellbeing of all players and staff the priority, and in light of the recent rise in COVID-19 cases across the country, the Premier League has reintroduced Emergency Measures.

These include protocols such as more frequent testing, wearing face coverings while indoors, observing social distancing and limiting treatment time.

Leeds United v Arsenal will now get Gameweek 18 underway at 17:30 GMT, although it goes without saying that any FPL managers still mulling over their transfers for the upcoming Gameweek will want to hold on until the last possible minute to finalise any moves.

The latest suggestion is that this Saturday evening match is not in doubt but events are moving at such a pace that it’s worth keeping an eye on these pages, social media and beyond over the coming hours in case anything changes.

    What's the best (C) strategy?

    A. Go with your ideal Captain choice?

    B. Go with and Arsenal attacker if the game goes ahead?

    Thanks.

(C)ancelo with Tierney (VC). Then both of those games will get called off and Salah will get 20 points.

I have no idea what to do now after already wasting my transfer on watkins. I thought I'd FH if the transfer went pear shaped but I don't even know if it's worth doing that.

Professional footballers should not be mixing with the general public at this stage. Self isolation with family only or within the squad is a basic requirement. Someone said Ramsey was at a crowded event last night. Fecking idiotic. These guys are pros and paid big wages.

I hardly consider home life plus hanging out at the training ground as being categorised as 'prisoners'. Fecking joke if it is. Lock down 'professional' athletes for 5-6 weeks. Easily manageable exspecially considering their wages and team pefromance is a priority.

      1. griffzinho
        • 13 Years
        4 years, 2 months ago

Not satirical. If they can't isolate for 3-4 weeks during peak spreading this and spend time with their families alone I don't know what is wrong. The training ground/match days are plenty socialising for them apart from home life. Most are paid £50,000/week +. This should be a minimum requirement. Speaking as a family that had to isolate for 12 months pre covid due to extremely premature twins + then Covid, it is manageable for 'professional' footballers to put their job as a priority and indeed their families for the peak Winter period. In general the attitude in the UK is laughable compared to the continent, hence the figures.

their wage is their wage.. If the rest of the population doesn't have to isolate, why would they have to?
They are not paid by public money, they are payed salary just like everyone else..
The fact that they earn far more than me and you has nothing to do with anything..

            • 13 Years
            4 years, 2 months ago

The fact that they are propfessional athletes and their teams performance depends on 'their' fitness plus they are paid handsomely for the priviledge of being pro soccer players says to me that they should out of 'pure professionalism' restrict their movements. This being so they are fit to play for their 'team' and earn their wage. Their fitness if a responsibility.

Posted on the last thread but I think there’s some serious mileage in wildcarding into the four remaining fixtures and assuming the Premier League will be paused.

Based on 2019/20 we’d then all resume with unlimited transfers and price changes would also have been paused.

Only a theory and obviously a gamble, but equally, might find that the first wildcard gets burned.

If you were to structure a FH with 5/6 Leeds & Arsenal players, (as we will know whether that game is happening before the deadline) then you can still get 11 playing players even with a cancellation of 1 fixture.

      Thoughts?

I don't mean to run it in to all those that made their transfers early but the one good thing that might come out of this people will now be a lot more hesitant at doing early transfers so price changes might actually slow down like they do during the international breaks

How about us who waited until the very last moment and the game gets cancelled after the deadline?

Postponing in such a small timeframe before the game is inexcusable!
They must have been able to do it earlier..
