Manchester United swept aside Burnley in the only Gameweek 20 match of the day, after Everton v Newcastle United was postponed earlier in the week.

Our Scout Notes article reflects on the key Fantasy Premier League (FPL) talking points from the fixture.

RANGNICK RINGS THE CHANGES

Manchester United boss Ralf Rangnick made six changes to his starting XI in Gameweek 20, in an attempt to get back on track after an underwhelming display at Newcastle United on Monday.

Two of those changes arrived up front, with Jadon Sancho (£8.9m) and Edinson Cavani (£8.4m) replacing the suspended Bruno Fernandes (£11.6m) and Marcus Rashford (£9.4m).

“Since we only played three days ago in an away game, when we got back very late, in the middle of the night, we could not train very much. So, we tried to prepare the team in the locker room with regard to what the game-plan should look like. Tonight is all about energy and raising the energy level.

When Edi (Cavani) came on at half-time at Newcastle, not only did he score the equaliser but he also had another two great opportunities. He is in good shape so, for me, it was logical to play him and Cristiano (Ronaldo) together. Yes, the other changes are just due to the fact that we only played three days ago. It is all about energy and fresh legs.” – Ralf Rangnick

As a result, the Red Devils showed more of an attacking edge right from the off, as they went on to score three goals in the first-half for the first time since January and record 18 goal attempts overall.

For Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.5m), the Portuguese is now into double-figures for Premier League goal involvements, with tonight’s goal and assist taking him to eight and three respectively for the season. That means he is now averaging over five points per match, a team-leading total. Notably, he also avoided his fifth yellow card of the campaign – which would have resulted in a one-match ban – and now has just one more fixture to navigate without a caution before the threshold increases to 10.

Following the 3-1 win, Rangnick remains unbeaten in his five games since replacing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at the end of November, despite disruptions caused by Covid, with Wolverhampton Wanderers up next on Monday.

“The whole team performance was a lot better, I was pleased with the performances of our wingers. Jadon (Sancho) did well and Mason (Greenwood). Edi (Cavani) and Cristiano (Ronaldo), the work effort was amazing.” – Ralf Rangnick

SHAW IMPRESSES IN FIRST LEAGUE START UNDER RANGNICK

Elsewhere, two further changes saw Diogo Dalot (£4.5m) and Alex Telles (£5.0m) drop to the bench, with Aaron Wan-Bissaka (£5.1m) and Luke Shaw (£5.0m) starting their first league games under Rangnick.

And Shaw was especially impressive, as he ended the match with 33 final-third touches, 11 crosses (he took five corners) and three created chances, all match-leading totals. It’s also worth noting that he would have been handed an assist for Sancho, had it not gone down as an own-goal.

However, defensive issues remain at United, which will need to be rectified if he is to become a genuine option for our FPL sides.

Against Burnley, it was another nervous display at the back, especially in the first-half when they were carved open a number of times, with the Clarets ending the match with 10 shots which carried an expected goal (xG) value of 1.18.

Burnley’s xG shot map v Manchester United in Gameweek 20

BURNLEY WILL NEED DOUBLES TO TEMPT US

Burnley have games in hand, four in fact, and the timing of those Double Gameweeks will be absolutely key in determining just how much Fantasy interest they are afforded. Without them, the fixtures remain mixed at best:

BURNLEY’S FIXTURES STILL TO BE REARRANGED:
  • Burnley v Tottenham Hotspur (weather)
  • Burnley v Watford (Covid)
  • Aston Villa v Burnley (Covid)
  • Burnley v Everton (Covid)

However, if do see one or two of those previously postponed matches added to Gameweeks 21 or 22, the likes of Matthew Lowton (£4.4m) and Chris Wood (£6.7m) could provide value.

Prior to kick-off, Sean Dyche confirmed that Nick Pope (£5.4m), Kevin Long (£4.0m), Josh Brownhill (£4.3m) and Jay Rodriguez (£5.2m) have all tested positive for Covid-19, while Maxwel Cornet (£5.9m), Ashley Barnes (£5.2m) and Connor Roberts (£4.5m) also missed out through injury.

“We intend on getting on with things. A couple of bodies might come back because of the Covid situation and Maxwell Cornet might get around the squad. We will wait and see.” – Sean Dyche on Covid and injuries

Manchester United XI: de Gea, Wan-Bissaka, Bailly (Varane 66), Maguire, Shaw, McTominay, Matic, Greenwood (Dalot 81), Sancho, Cavani, Ronaldo (Fred 90+3)

Burnley XI: Hennessey, Lowton, Tarkowski, Mee, Taylor, McNeil (Pieters 84), Westwood, Cork (Stephens 58), Gudmundsson, Lennon (Vydra 74), Wood

Too risky with the potential of postponements to pull the trigger on Salah -> Son tonight to avoid the price changes?

I wouldn't transfer Salah out this week. He is facing a Chelsea team that is in shambles. If I still had Salah, he would be my captain.

Nothing wrong with Broja. And I think you have enough depth to cover Mount and Rudiger until you can swap them out. So really, just Salah, Dennis and Laca. Not worth wasting your WC for me.

Looking at Dias or Cash really. Would consider Cucarella but already have Sanchez in goal. Trent, Cancelo, Dier and Livra are my other defenders.

Need advice. Still have Salah on my team. My midfield right now is Salah - Mount - Son (Luiz, ESR). 1 FT, 2.7m ITB. I still have Tsimikas on my team and Dennis too. Thinking of benching Dennis for AFCON (if he goes) but then i would propably need to move Tsimikas soon when Robertson returns. I would prefer to get rid of Mount too. I have Ederson, Dias and Cancelo from City so their players aren't an option without taking a hit.

My initial thought was to play FH in GW22 if there are doubles. So would it be wise to do Salah Jota right now so the transfer would remain for GW23 so Salah losing value wouldn't impact me? If i did that, i could do Tsimikas TAA later too.

I wouldn't want to take a hit to move someone else with Salah but not sure if moving from Salah to Jota is going to get me out of the Cup. Still have all the chips left too but would prefer to save those for now.

Other players on defense are Lowton and Dier, Tsimikas right now on the bench. Watkins and Antonio on attack with Dennis.

Last time they announced them just after the deadline closed but the difference then was, the doubles weren't for that gameweek if I recall correctly

So in this case if we're expecting GW21 doubles they have to tell us before the deadline, basically today or I can't see it happening

Sold Bilva & James to Son & Dier last night, aiming towards BB22.

Premier League rules stipulate if a club cannot field 13 outfield players and a goalkeeper from its squad list or its ‘appropriately experienced’ under-21 players due to COVID-19 infections, isolation and other injuries and illnesses, the match will be postponed.

Callum Wilson (calf), Allan Saint-Maximin (calf), Ryan Fraser (hamstring), Federico Fernandez (calf), Jamal Lewis (hamstring), Paul Dummett (calf), Manquillo suspended, Hayden (knee), maybe Covid fit Ciaran Clark, Matt Ritchie, Karl Darlow and Joe Willock

… that leaves just 10 senior outfield players, including under-23s midfielder Elliot Anderson.

      watcha reckon 😉

          10 + Longstaff = 13 😉

If Clark, Ritchie and Willock are back and available then maybe it will go ahead, but I dare say they may not quite make it

I like those moves. You've been unlucky with Salah blanking this week. I didn't go down the FH route and def dodged a bullet this week by owning Son and Ronaldo over Salah. Hopefully the FH in 20 gained you enough points to make up for it.

The only way to get Son is to lose Salah this week but don't think it's worth it this week. Could see Salah doing well against Chelsea.

When these rearranged fixtures get announced, are we likely to know GW22 as well as GW21?

At the moment, based on Ben Crellin’s predictions, I think a free hit makes sense for my team in GW21. With a couple of transfers, I think my GW22 team would be ok!?

    As it stands (GW21)
    Pickford - probable DGW
    Cancelo - SGW
    Rudiger - SGW
    TAA - SGW
    Son - SGW
    Foden - SGW
    Bilva - SGW
    Jota- SGW
    Ronaldo - unlikely DGW
    Dennis - probable DGW
    Antonio - possible DGW

    Martinelli - SGW
    James - injured
    Livramento - injured

    As it stands (GW22)
    Pickford - unlikely DGW
James - probable DGW (if not injured)
    Rudiger - probable DGW
    TAA - probable DGW
    Livramento - unlikely DGW
    Foden - SGW
    Jota - probable DGW
    Son - likely DGW
    Martinelli - probable DGW
    Ronaldo - likely DGW
    Antonio - possible DGW

    Cancelo - SGW
    Bilva - SGW
    Dennis - AFCON

Unless fixtures are confirmed then no way I'd be FHing blind in the hope Ben crellin is correct. Time is running out for these GW21 fixtures to be announced.

There's to many moving parts to be conclusive.

If Nigeria are not appealing then Dennis stays and misses out on AFCON.

is it possible the GW22 & GW23 start deadlines could be dragged forward and all the GW21 extra games fall in GW22 and the GW22 extra games fall in to GW23? Gives more time to allocate the games to a game week without adding them post deadline

What a relief - I got so many fires to put out, one less is most welcome. Just seen the Cancelo news too.

James + Foden to Targett + Son? -4

Only way I can fund getting sonny boy before he hurts me more

I think he has had his rotation for a while - looked like a regular striker in the last game rather than a false 9 and may get a good run now - that's 8mill for the man up front for City - potentially FPL Gold imho.

Certainly a hold from me by I also have Son 🙂

Would really love Foster to be back in time for the doubles. Held him all this time, would be sweeeet!
