In the opening match of Double Gameweek 22, Brighton and Hove Albion grabbed a late equaliser to earn a draw against Crystal Palace in a lively M23 derby.

Our Scout Notes article reflects on the key Fantasy Premier League (FPL) talking points from the fixture.

GALLAGHER HITS 100 POINTS

Conor Gallagher’s (£6.1m) opener at the Amex on Friday means that he is the eighth FPL player to hit 100 points this season, following Mohamed Salah (£12.8m), Trent Alexander-Arnold (£8.4m), Joao Cancelo (£7.0m), Jarrod Bowen (£6.7m), Son Heung-min (£10.7m), Bernardo Silva (£7.5m) and Diogo Jota (£8.3m).

The Chelsea loanee has seen his ownership drop to 17.4% after missing successive matches against Norwich City and West Ham United, but now back in the starting XI, netted his seventh Premier League goal of the season against Brighton, with an instinctive strike against the run of play in the second-half.

“Conor Gallagher has got that energy and understands when to get in the box with that timing and he will continue to keep scoring goals for us.” – Patrick Vieira

However, Gallagher’s goal was Palace’s only shot in the box all night, as they once again failed to offer much threat in the final-third.

Despite that, tonight’s 1-1 draw does at least end a run of three away matches without scoring, after failing to find the back of the net against Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester United and Leeds United.

Patrick Vieira, meanwhile, named six players aged 23 or younger in his starting XI, including Eberechi Eze (£5.9m) – making his first Premier League start of 2021/22 – and the talented Michael Olise (£5.4m), who has been directly involved in five goals as a substitute this season.

In truth, both players failed to make much of an impact, but will surely be handed further opportunities to impress in the coming weeks, with wingers Wilfried Zaha (£6.8m) and Jordan Ayew (£5.8m) both currently representing their countries at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

BUTLAND IMPRESSES

Gallagher on target as Butland impresses: FPL Double Gameweek 22 notes 1

In his pre-match press conference, Patrick Vieira had said that Vicente Guaita (£4.6m) “wasn’t fit enough” to feature against Millwall in the FA Cup last week and would “hopefully” be back against Brighton.

However, the Spaniard only made the bench, with reserve keeper Jack Butland (£4.4m) impressing in his absence and saving a penalty, whilst also drawing plenty of praise from his manager after the full-time whistle.

“Jack Butland was the man of the match. I am delighted for him. He is working hard every single day. He needed a chance and he was at his best today and that allowed us to go home with the point.

He had been training all week. It was a good save in the first half, he came for crosses, he saved the penalty. He showed all his potential. He deserved it for the way he has been working and waiting. I am glad for him.” – Patrick Vieira

HARD TO BEAT BRIGHTON

Gallagher on target as Butland impresses: FPL Double Gameweek 22 notes 5

The Seagulls have lost just four games all season – only the top three have lost fewer – and were much the better side against Palace, but failed to keep a clean sheet despite limiting their opponents to just one shot in the box and 0.47 expected goals (xG).

With Chelsea up next, followed by an away trip to Leicester City and a blank, owners may be looking to move on their assets, though it is worth noting that from Gameweek 25 onwards, they embark on a kind run which includes back-to-back matches against Watford (a), Burnley (h), Aston Villa (h) and Newcastle United (a).

Surprisingly, despite two successive rests, Tariq Lamptey (£4.5m) started on the bench against Palace, with Joel Veltman (£4.2m) preferred at right-back. However, the youngster was heavily involved upon his introduction on 56 minutes, receiving 18 passes in the final third – only Jakub Moder (£4.5m) had more.

After tonight’s draw, Brighton are unbeaten in their last four matches, taking eight points in that time, as many as they managed in their previous 11 top-flight fixtures.

Brighton and Hove Albion XI: Sanchez, Veltman (Welbeck 73), Webster, Burn, Cucurella, Moder, Gross (March 73), Lallana (Lamptey 56), Mac Allister, Trossard, Maupay

Crystal Palace XI: Butland, Ward, Andersen, Guehi, Mitchell, Hughes, Schlupp, Gallagher, Olise (Benteke 81), Eze (Milivojevic 66), Edouard (Mateta 66)

More examples of how we need mid gameweek transfer options - throwing out more chips just doesn’t cut it.

    Sort it fpl!

When games are confirmed postponed we have a window (those with affected players) to transfer out for other players who have not yet played, for -2 seems reasonable.

      2. @persecuted_by_mods
        4 years, 5 months ago

Like 2 transfers a week, 1 to be used before gw starts as normal and one can be used in gw so seeing mount out right now I could transfer him in gw for someone else

Yes, I think even if those midweek transfers carrier a hit like a -2 (as it does give a slight advantage) it would be fair

Not ridiculous at all for COVID affected games, which is my point it would only apply to managers with players in those games, not everyone every week….

It’s becoming laughable to have a deadline upon which games in that gameweek are not taking place until nearly 2 weeks later.
Something for sure needs to be implemented

Chips are more attractive to fpl as they increase participation and hits on the site i'm afraid. I totally agree but i'd be shocked if fpl took the extra transfer route.
They have done nothing in recent years to help serious or dedicated players quite the opposite in fact with how they changed the pricing structure to decrease advantage gained from it a year or so back.
Also though, it is a free game blah blah so i guess it is what it is.

Yeah I quite liked that. You basically had a squad of 25 or so and could do what you wanted with them after each match day. They replaced it with draft (which I understand isn't for everyone and can be found elsewhere anyway).

                  1) The impact of COVID-19 infections on a club’s squad, as well as injuries, illness and those isolating, and the number of players available on the squad list and any Under-21 players with appropriate experience. Where a club cannot field 13 outfield players and a goalkeeper either from its squad list or its appropriately experienced Under-21 players, the match will be postponed.

                    Clear as mud.

Clarifies why arsenal let two healthy players leave just before asking for postponement.

Every teams lawyers now working on new ways to exploit these "clear" guidelines.

Hey if arsenal pull off a postponement after losing 1 extra player than any other season in these circumstances, then the number of postponements must sky rocket.

Liverpool didn't postpone unnecessarily. It was calculated in order to prevent any PL games being added while the Africans away, and they considered that very necessary. It was based on a statistically improbable number of so-called 'false positive' tests. This reeks of fish seeing that LFC themselves did the testing and EFL had no option but to accept the reported results. LFC also closed the training ground temporarily (and unnecessarily) in order to add weight to their 'urgent request', rather than waiting 4 hours for more reliable PCR tests to be done.

Either LFC were innocent victims of a very shoddy batch of tests or they didn't implement the tests properly (why?) or they cheated. The latter looks the most likely explanation. And asking Klopp about it is useless, he can only go on what LFC medical staff tell him. Liverpool should put their Chief Medical Officer up for interview. But why would they? They got the outcome they wanted and it can't be reversed now. 😆

There's a gag-order in place now apparently so the incident cannot be scrutinized further. Convenient.

This shows how clueless you are.

        The tests were not internal.

The scale of infection indicated by initial PCR tests early last week results led to the temporary closure of Liverpool's training ground, and ultimately the decision to postpone the Arsenal match."

It is understood the club conducted another round of PCR tests later in the week, and it was at that point that many tests returned as negative.

So there is simply no reason as to why Arsenal fans, or any others should be angered by the lack of investigation as there is simply no evidence to support it.

The general incidence is 3 false positives for 100 000 test, yet Liverpool conveniently had several, at just the right time from their point of view. Correct, no evidence to support suspicions of foul play, and none shall be forthcoming due to the gag-order. Convenient.

Per tests are not controlled by liverpool. So what are you proposing? I can't work it out. The moonlanding is under debate in your circles as well as whether the earth is flat

Now now, guys, play nice. There no point blaming clubs or fans for postponements. Blame the process and offer an alternative if you can. Clubs are simply applying to postponements based on the sport guidelines and can be rejected as we've seen.

The main way it can be unfair is through corruption. And that would be something to get our knickers in a twist about if we had evidence. But a lot of outrage around without obvious reason or knowledge of the situation and application imo
