Our Scoreboard series rounds up the key Fantasy Premier League (FPL) talking points from Saturday’s Double Gameweek 22 fixtures.

The graphics below are taken from LiveFPL, Ragabolly’s excellent and ever-expanding website, and our own Premium Members Area.

GOALS, ASSISTS, BONUS

INJURIES AND BANS

Who are the best FPL captain options for Gameweek 16?

Cristiano Ronaldo missed out on Manchester United’s draw with Aston Villa on Saturday evening with the same hip issue that kept him out of Monday’s FA Cup tie.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Marcus Rashford were also unavailable because of illness and a dead leg respectively, while Harry MaguirePhil Jones and Jadon Sancho were only among the substitutes after their own recoveries from injury.

“With Cristiano, it’s unfortunately still the same problem with his hip flexor. He couldn’t train yesterday, and I had a conversation with him. After training, we decided that it doesn’t make sense if he’s not feeling fully fit to take the trip here. It makes sense to have treatment at home and then hopefully be available again for the game on Wednesday at Brentford.

“Aaron (Wan-Bissaka) unfortunately is ill, that’s the reason why he couldn’t travel with us.

“Harry (Maguire) was out for two weeksI’m happy to have him back in the squad again but I decided to stay with the two central defenders that played on Monday. With all the games coming up in the next couple of days, it’s most likely that he will play again then.

“Marcus (Rashford) conceded a dead leg two days ago in training. At first, it didn’t seem to be that bad, but overnight it got worse and he couldn’t train yesterday.” – Ralf Rangnick

Ezri Konsa was substituted at half-time of the evening kick-off, meanwhile.

Pep Guardiola delivered the ominous news that Manchester City had some fresh cases of coronavirus in his pre-match press conference but the damage appeared minimal when looking at today’s teamsheet.

Nathan Ake and Cole Palmer were the two players to miss out (the City website repeating the line that they were “short of full fitness”), while Oleksandr Zinchenko picked up an injury and was also unavailable.

Ederson, John Stones, Phil Foden, Jack Grealish and Raheem Sterling were all back after their own purported spells in isolation.

Ruben Neves, Allan and Kenny McLean also missed out because of “illness” at their respective clubs on Saturday.

Marcal‘s absence from Wolves’ win over Southampton was injury-related (no other details have been forthcoming), meanwhile.

Dean Smith confirmed that Brandon Williams was merely suffering from cramp when being substituted in Norwich’s win over Everton, while he also downplayed the severity of Max Aarons‘ knock – but did say that Tim Krul‘s shoulder injury was a worry.

GAMEWEEK 22 TAKEAWAYS

TITLE RACE OVER?

Manchester City’s win over Chelsea took them 13 points clear at the top of the Premier League. Liverpool can narrow that gap to eight points by winning both of their games in hand but it’s perhaps worth half a thought about what impact a premature end of the title race could have on FPL in the longer term.

Gameweek 36 has been widely touted as being a big ‘double’ in FPL but how much will be left to play for by that point is another question. City, for instance, could very easily have the title sewn up by then, as happened last season when Pep Guardiola ran wild with the changes with the Premier League crown in the bag and cups to play for elsewhere.

Planning that far ahead in this helter-skelter season requires Nostradamus-like powers, of course, so the message is perhaps more: “Enjoy City assets while you can”.

They’ve got some tantalising fixtures coming up in the next five Gameweeks especially, with Kevin De Bruyne back on the radar after his fifth attacking return in six appearances.

He’s started every single game in that time, with Ilkay Gundogan typically the fall guy to accommodate him, and he’s looking back to his best after an early-season dip in levels: from Gameweeks 17-22, he’s clocked up eight more shots and eight more chances created than any of his teammates.

“He’s missed a little bit of confidence this season, he was struggling a little bit, but he knows what he can do. He’s incredibly loved by all of us for that fact.” – Pep Guardiola on Kevin De Bruyne

DIGNE AND COUTINHO DEBUTS

Philippe Coutinho stole the headlines with a goalscoring appearance off the bench but Lucas Digne also caught the eye on his Villa bow.

Immediately installed at left-back, Digne served up a, well, Digne-esque zero-pointer, thanks to his concession of two goals and a yellow card.

But he was very advanced up the Villa left flank, registering 25 final-third touches (the second-most of Villa players), two shots in the box and two chances created, and was also involved at set-piece situations.

There were promising performances all over the park from Steven Gerrard’s side, with Emiliano Buendia impressive and excellent budget midfielder Jacob Ramsey picking up his second and third attacking returns in four appearances.

Should Villa’s mooted Double Gameweek 23 materialise (that’s still pure speculation at this stage), they’ll have plenty of takers based on some promising displays under Gerrard in some tricky-looking fixtures.

It’s difficult to gauge Coutinho’s levels after a mere 22-minute cameo (remember Leon Bailey?) but Gerrard’s system involves two number 10 roles, rather than out and out wingers, and seems a good fit for the on-loan Brazilian.

It was noticeable just how central he was after his introduction against United, popping up in the six-yard box for a dramatic equaliser and generally being prominent in and around the Red Devils’ area.

Scout Notes 25

BRUNO BACK?

Owners and captainers of Bruno Fernandes had a dream evening, with the Portugal international scoring twice – both goals owing much to individual Villa errors.

There’s still a long way to go before we welcome him back into the premium FPL asset conversation in earnest.

Stationed in a centre-left midfield role in a 4-3-3/4-1-4-1 hybrid set-up, his two goals came from his only efforts of the match, with his second strike his only real meaningful touch in the Villa area.

Managers who already own Fernandes will care not a jot and be laughing all the way up the overall ranks; for the rest of us, the last couple of games in cup and league have been better from the one-time ‘essential’ FPL midfielder but he has plenty of work to do to recapture those 2020/21 levels – particularly with the loss of the monopoly on penalty-taking duties.

THE BEST OF THE REST

While much of the Fantasy focus was on Watford’s blanking strikers and Magpies debutant Chris Wood at St James’ Park, Allan Saint-Maximin moved third in the FPL forwards’ points list with a second successive nine-point return. The fact that he’s in a podium place is more an indictment of the underwhelming competition this season: he had blanked in 11 of his previous 12 appearances before scoring against Manchester United in Gameweek 19.

But nine attacking returns at the halfway(ish) stage of 2021/22 is decent, while he is doing his best to banish an injury-prone reputation as he has yet to miss a single one of Newcastle’s league matches this season.

Emmanuel Dennis, meanwhile, didn’t have too many sights of goal but ought to have had an assist to his name when Moussa Sissoko wasted a sitter he set up. It was goalscorer Joao Pedro, and not Dennis or Joshua King, who ended up playing through the middle on Tyneside in the second half, and it was he who bagged the equaliser, building on some impressive displays in recent weeks.

It took a peach of a James Ward-Prowse free-kick to breach Wolves’ mean defence but there was still joy to be had for Jose Sa, Conor Coady and Rayan Ait-Nouri, who produced returns thanks to their work either between the posts or at the other end of the pitch. Sa is now FPL’s leading goalkeeper for points, while Coady is joint-seventh among defenders. The promising budget asset Ait-Nouri, meanwhile, is now averaging 5.2 points per match this season, which is better than what the likes of Andrew Robertson, Ruben Dias and Antonio Rudiger are managing.

Ward-Prowse, meanwhile, is on a hot streak, with four goals and two assists in five starts. He’s massively overachieving (his expected goal involvement is 1.79 in that period, almost half of which comes from a penalty) but with a dead eye like his from set-piece situations, perhaps Opta need to come up with a metric just for him.

Rafael Benitez is reportedly on the brink of the sack after Everton’s dismal 2-1 defeat at Norwich. Owners of the Toffees’ players in FPL will be clinging on to the vague hope that whoever replaces the former Liverpool boss can enjoy some sort of new manager bounce as the fixtures are still very decent for Demarai Gray and co over the next four Gameweeks, even if the form is wanting.

Everton’s plight is made all the worse when we consider that Norwich had lost their last six matches by a combined 16-0 scoreline. Few FPL bosses will be interested in the Canaries despite Saturday’s success but Adam Idah is a name to monitor for budget bench fodder duties, building on a promising display against West Ham last week with a goalscoring performance against Everton, with Dean Smith’s recent switch to a 4-4-2 increasing his first-team chances.

I still cant get over how ridiculously lucky those who brought in Bruno were. I just dont understand the logic of bringing a player into your team who costs 11.6m, plays for a crap team and has scored 1 goal in 15 games.

Just absurd luck from a bad pick, especially when considering the flukey 1st goal. Just sickening.

They have to spend an extra transfer for him now since he won't be scoring again anytime soon. So not much of a gain either way longterm.

See how he does away at Brentford first.

If he's not looking to set Ronaldo up and play his natural game he will be more effective.

I guess it's just spare cash and using it on premium players. Son out after Salah will have been it.

Not popular on here but 275 thousand people did transfer him.

Wasn't that lucky, I saw that Ralf changed his formation, and it sounded like Ronaldo was going to miss out. When Bruno is the main man he delivers, consistently. I'm only surprised that he didn't get a penalty

Also comes down to who had the money to make the switch in one move. I doubt there were many who thought Bruno was best pick a couple of weeks ago, then Son injury and postponements leave as one of the only attacking midfielders starting.

Some people would argue good planning, others would argue a bit fortunate.

Those who made 2 x intentional transfer to get him in ballsy

We weren’t lucky. Bruno has always had it in his locker to haul. Luck would be getting Jack Butland’s 11 points of the bench.

Plus, most of us had a premium player slot to fill with the absence of Salah and Son.

But why is it necessary to fill Salah/Son's spot with another player of a similar price, especially when that said player has been one of the lowest points scorers in the game for several months?

You sound a bit salty. I didn’t bring in Bruno either, but he was a fairly obvious pick actually *for many people*….
Lots of people still had Salah, or had Son + £££ in the bank.
Who else would you have picked to replace them if you were in the above position? After postponements and it becoming clear that Bruno would be in the Utd side - the list of obvious replacements with a Double GW was small.

I know if I’d have had some money ITB, he’d have been my Son replacement. But, c’est la vie. I went for Trossard & Dennis instead 🙂

      He was due 😉

... no Salah or Son, City mids a nightmare, lots of news about Arsenal not having a fixture and Spurs not having a double, Chelsea playing City, Leicester games always in doubt, Ronaldo was injured and missed the previous game ... So when it came to who was available to replace Son it was a no-brainer really I suppose for many because of the lack of choice.

Who else was a better choice if you already owned Jota, City & Bowen ?

I brought him in and capped him.

Admittedly, there was no data supporting the move, just a lack of options elsewhere to be honest.

Like many of us, I've had my share of terrible luck this season. This was my first slice of good luck for a change.

Bruno was due. He should have scored against Wolves(a freekick and one off the bar).

      Played in his favoured position.

Bruno was due? Mmm ok. Over the last 6 games, Bruno has an xGI of 0.92 which is 37th best of the midfielders. His xGI per 90 mins is 0.45 which is 28th out of all players. But you keep telling yourself he was due! lol

Made the move for a number of reasons. Wanted a United player. Ronaldo injury doubt. Had to get rid of son. Easy switch to Salah. No points hits needed. looked good when he came on in last Man United league game. Don't think he was a bad pick!

We know how Bruno plays when he is main man
Man utd had best dgw fixtures (especially with Tot in big doubt, and also Watford Burnley in doubt too)
Placeholder for Kdb next gw and Salah after that

A calculated move for me. With doubts over Ronaldo and a feeling the Villa game would be fairly open, plus penalty duties, I decided Bruno was a logical pick. Brentford next too. Suck it up rather than class other people's picks as lucky.

Looking over my MLs this morning I feel I'm not so good at this game lately.

Firstly I thought according to reports that cr7 was fit so brought him in on a FH.

Lots of my rivals also felt the same and brought him in but also brought Bruno in. They didn't bring him in thinking cr7 was out therefore a formation change. A few have cr7 capt and Bruno vice which isn't wise but could be perfect for them. Seems to be more good luck (and me bad luck) than a shrewd move imo. Bruno has been hopeless as have utd.

With news that arsenal spurs was gonna be off, and Leicester called off, it looked like Manu had the best double fixtures.
Add in a son injury and a lot of cash, Bruno was the pick of United's mids.
I hadn't thought about him till Fri pm as was all set to go Son to Madison but after their game was postponed had a punt on Bruno.
It's more paying attention than luck. Is it lucky Son got injured and I had to move him on? If I hadn't had to do that I wouldnt have had Bruno.

It’s not that difficult to understand? Many had son to replace, lack of options in that price, he has a double and is a short term move as a placeholder for salah

But again, as I just mentioned earlier, why did people feel it was necessary to replace Son with a player who is of similar price? Particularly a player who has scored 1 goal in 15 games! Utter nonsence.

Nothing wrong with money in the bank if the cheaper options are the players most likely to score more pts which the stats indicated was indeed the case in respect of Bruno versus the cheaper mids.

The other option in terms of a Son replacement which was the one I chose was to do nothing and roll the transfer. I did this because I couldn't identify a single good midfield option as a longer term pick.

Out of the double week teams, only Utd and Wolves have reasonable fixtures from. GW23 onwards but as far as Im concerned neither team offer and good midfield options. I didnt have the funds for Bruno but even if I did, be wouldn't have been a consideration.

Now I have 2 frees and can look at maybe Son to Sterling or KDB for their good run of fixtures.

It’s not utter nonsense though. You keep a structure to your team by picking Bruno and making the move to salah easier - if you put the cash into the forward then it’s another 2 transfers to get salah.

You summed it up pretty well, there were literally no decent options to replace son (once Maddison no longer had a double). You decided to do nothing and have 2fts (fair enough) others chose to roll the dice on Bruno with 2 games. Made sense with Brentford looking so poor against saints. Hold Bruno for 2gws and then get salah back was always my plan

Also I’m not interested in the city mids. Too much of a headache - they score well and then miss out for a game. Would rather have son salah Bowen raphinha jota as a midfield 5

No you dont put the cash into the forward line because as you said, spreading the cash around means multiple transfers to get Salah.

You dont need to put the cash anywhere. Nothing to say you have to spend it. Just keep it in the bank ready to bring Salah back.

An expensive asset in an underperforming team who got the benefit of two individual errors. Still, if you had money in your pocket who else was there to bring in? Not a player I considered but I don’t begrudge people their points. Plus I got Trossard instead so what do I know???

I'm not begrudging but it was a risky pick given the team form and player form and his first goal was an absolute fluke. Second goal was class. Villa dominated though. Well done to those who took the chance, but it was a big 'chance'. Deserve the points 100%.

I think luck is not the correct term, it coincided with a lot of factors, United the only team with a decent double, and Son was highly owned and therefore a lot had the money to do that swap, perhaps more due to the lack of options this week, but fair enough.
A good pick based on recent stats and oerformances, No, but in terms of what opened up this dgw you could argue that it was a smart move.
And so the actual happening, that is how football tends to do some times, a shot from that distance fumbled in by one of PL best goalies, and Villa bought Digne so he could set up that second goal with a horreneous pass to Luiz, not much chance of getting 2 goals from that and that was his only sot. But he did score and that often happens in football, a player scores 2 out of nowhere and another one misses a sitter in another game.

I just get frustrated with this sort of thing were people profit from a combination of a poor decision and circumstance. It happens a lot when there is a double week or a blank involved. People making blind one dimensional transfers just because of a double week and flukily profiting.

Bruno would not have even remotely have been a consideration if he had a single week and it just so happens that he picks this week to score for the first time in 15 weeks, not only one goal but 2 which to add even further annoyance, both had an element of luck. Just utterly absurd.

A similar scenario happened last season when people used FH chip in a blank week. Many brought in Trossard just because Brighton were one of the few teams who had a game and it just so happens that he picks that week to get his only haul of the season!

I can understand the frustration part, i also sat and watched and felt wow he got max out of it. But there was circumstances, which you touch upon yourself that led people to pick him. I did not pick him as i saw nothing from him or Uniteds game that it looked like a move i wanted to do, and i still stand by that, you cant base decisions on flukey goals from outside the box, that is something that happens some times.

Both Borges and Carlsen have Bruno as captain and don't own Ronaldo or Kane. Bruno grew into an option when Ronaldo became a doubt and the NLD was called off. Bruno is better without Ronaldo. There are lots of logic here that make sense as to why Bruno would be a decent shout.

If this is arguments for Bruno being a good pick then halleluja. Who owns has nothing to do with him being a good pick. It was a combination of several factors happening, Nld off, Ronaldo doubt, Leicester off, and the team you had before this particular gw must have been set up for that move.
And its not like Bruno was having a lot of shots, big chances and laid it on the plate for team mates, he got max out of almost nothing. Thats just how football is some times.

I feel like we are in for a very difficult remainder of the season in terms of strategy. There are going to be so many double fixtures now dotted around the remaining gameweeks which will complicate decision making greatly.

Just as an example, clearly the Man City players are great options and they have great fixtures now also. However they are one of the few teams who dont have any fixtures to be re-arranged which means they wont have any DGW's. Same for West Ham meaning that a decision is required in respect of Bowen.

    Headache central!

I disagree. I think it makes things pretty simple if there are sporadic DGW’s dotted throughout the rest of the season…
Take next week… if Villa are confirmed for a DGW. My options will narrow massively to Villa players only. And I already know I’ll pick up Watkins. Add in a Digne and I’m done.
Without the DGW, there’s so many more options, and I’m unsure what move I’d make!

I dont think you are acknowledging other complexities involved.

First of all, we shouldn't be blindly only considering players who have a double week as our next transfer targets. Golden rule of DGW's is only consider those players if they remain good options after the DGW. People have already fallen into that trap this week by bringing in players like Trossard and Mount who become immediate fires to put out after the DW.

Sometimes players double but then may have a blank week after that so over a period of gameweeks still play the same amount of games than those who dont double and dont blank etc.

Even in a normal season, DGW's add complexity to decision making and can steer us away from players we really want just because they dont double in a certain week which can be harmful in the long term.

This dynamic is going to be multiplied further in the current climate with so many fixtures to be re-arranged.

Quite easy really, hold Cancelo & Bowen and hold which ever City mid you have too, bring Son back when fit and hold the other regular suspects like Salah, TAA, Jota/Raphina and the like - the rest are up for grabs.

If you have a full set of chips left it is all gravy 🙂

      TAA Cancelo
      Salah Son Bowen City/Jota/Raphina

      Some valid issues. However:
Have you thought about Citeh 17 games over a "say" an average 20 game team to the season end?
Do we plan the inevitable GW28 Chelsea assets?
Do we appreciate there are only a few chips but many gameweeks? Hence seeing the inevitable -4's and -8's.
How much does a serious blank effect us? 25 points maybe when we are fighting over 2 400 points by the season end.
Preparing for DGW big scores is overrated. Most teams have a couple, therefore everyone will get stellar points sometime.
The big scores we look for will be offset by Europe and cups when the "big" teams rotate.

In my view, strategy should matter but the "Bruno decision" was calculated luck over Ron and these issues will affect our rank far more by the season end. I am sticking with a tea's talisman to get me through the chaos.

Not an owner here and not salty. In fact i have a ear sickness that makes me refrain from too much salt-).
I think most in a regular week or with less PP probably would had gone Kane/maddison etc, or if Son had the double. In terms of what happened on the pitch i would say its football and sometimes a player scores with a lump shot from outside the box on possible one of the best goalie and gets served by Digne (who just signed) for the second, while in another game another player misses a sitter and creates one big chance and ends up with nothing, this is how football works out.

Is there any indication that the PL will looking at amending the ridiculous postponement rules, which clubs (plural so not having a go any team) are taking advantage of?

If not do we need some sort of FFS ticker with 1st team injury list?

most clubs have 1or2 covid cases at any club one time, so if they get injuries/suspensions postponement will keep happening so they play their fixtures when those players are back

Lukaku has been a big disappointment for some, but I don't particularly rate him. His lack of influence on games has been predictable. He is a big, bulky, lumbering centre forward with no pace and not particularly skilful. Can't imagine him dribbling past one or two defenders and scoring. He's dangerous in the penalty area especially when balls come in across the box but his threat can be nullified by decent centre backs. He has a decent strike rate over his career, but so do many other attackers in the game. He needs good service, of course, but seems incapable of creating a chance for himself and his performances are laboured at best. He's been a flop for Chelsea.

You should downgrade players coming into the PL whose game relies a significant amount on their physicality / strength.

Lukaku could go to Spain or Italy and will outmuscle the defenders. Much more difficult in the PL. You can see the same with Ndombele at Spurs.

Players whose 'edge' is physicality often find that their edge is not worth as much in the PL compared to other leagues.

Fpl "assists" can be comical, can't they? Or plain irritating if you don't own the player. Think of Bernardo Silva getting 3 pts for kicking the ball into a Wolves defender's ribcage for a penalty that never should have been given, Antonio playing a very short pass to Masuaka out on the touchline before his fluke goal, Bowen's header out of the box the other day which was half handled, and all the other dodgy penalties where the player fouled gets the "assist". Great when you own the player, rubbish when you don't. Silly fpl points rule really.

Yeah, there’s a stupid amount of luck in some of the ‘assists’ and because they generate a lot of bonus as well and + captain a jammy assist can sometimes mean the difference between 10-15 points and a bad week or a very good week

He should be in the England squad for the World Cup. A move to a bigger club beckons too.

I could see him play for United tbh, although their fans won’t think it’s a sexy signing.

I asked whether Foden>Bruno(c) for a -4 was worth a hit and was laughed off…..went for Ronaldo(c) for a -8 instead. My hot streak with captains has come to an end!

People complaining about Bruno C being a lucky move ... in a virtual game primarily based upon luck 🙂

This even out trumps Garland Greene's definition of irony ... a bunch of idiots dancing around on a plane to a song made famous by a band that died in a plane crash 😉

Skill puts you in the top 100k, luck determines how high in the top 100k you finish

It a game where we have no influence on the outcome with success or failure brought by chance rather than through one's own actions.

It's not luck, I notice from my mini leagues, it's usually the same people at the top and bottom of the league each year. It's Judgement and a fundamental understanding of football and how that transfers to scoring points on the game.

Disagree our control is picking the squad based on stats, fixtures and basic football knowledge. We make those decisions.

Of course there is an element of luck and in some seasons that is more prominent than others

I keep expecting JWP's returns from GW17 to calm down, yet he keeps going... And he's not even high on the FFS watchlist or in conversations, just like Wolves defence since GW12

Most shots from outside the box so will mean he won’t appear high on projections but clearly one of the best free kick takers and on pens so def a solid pick. 90mins guaranteed as well

Chelsea's run of fixtures from GW28 is too good to ignore.

If James is back, I may revert to a back four (Trent, Cancelo, Rudiger, James).
