Fantasy Football Scout community writer Greyhead continues with his series of articles analysing the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) transfers and strategies of some noted Fantasy managers, from serial top 10k finishers to well-known faces.

The Great and The Good this year are the Scouts Joe LepperNeale RiggGeoff Dance, and Tom Freeman, FPL Wire’s Zophar, from the Hall of Fame Fabio BorgesFPLMatthewYavuz Kabuk and Tom Stephenson, Blackbox’s Az and Mark Sutherns, FPL “celebrities” LTFPL AndyMagnus Carlsen and FPL General plus last year’s mini league winner Les Caldwell.

Due to the unforgiving Thursday-Friday turnaround between Gameweeks, we’re bringing you TGATG a little later this week!

“Mo mo, mo mo mo mo, mo mo mo mo

Mo mo, there’s mo limit!”

You didn’t need the lyrical genius of a Belgian/Dutch dance act to tell you that this was a week for limits to be broken as the number of FPL managers crossed the 9 million threshold, centuries became the norm and that man Mohamed Salah (£13.1m) etched his name in Triple Captain history.

Before all that, there were a frantic few hours before the deadline with the announcement of the doubles in Gameweek 28 and 29 leading to last-minute Wildcards and significant divergence in our chip strategies. FPL planning just got interesting again!

Some massive scores but Joe was our top performer this week with an uncharacteristically aggressive minus eight paying off as Bukayo Saka (£6.5m) and Andrew Robertson (£7.2m) came in to carry him to 140 points after hits, and obviously, a certain Egyptian helped as well.

It was enough to see him above Mark Sutherns, who is still lurking at the bottom of this very competitive mythical mini-league despite his Wildcard, although he did at least benefit from the well-timed Nelson Semedo (£4.8m) 61st-minute substitution which banked him some clean sheet points.

Meanwhile, Fabio continues to stretch his lead over Az, and now moves up to 1,623rd and surely Burnley is now his happy place with Wout Weghorst (£6.5m) and Nick Pope (£5.4m) his haul heroes.

WILDCARDS

Some hastily prepared overhauls were orchestrated this week by five of our managers. The full ins and outs are below:

Mark Sutherns
  • IN – Foster, Robertson, Tierney, Kilman, Semedo, Son, Saka, Salah, Coutinho, Broja, Saint-Maximin, Jimenez
  • OUT – De Gea, Dalot, Dunk, Regulion, Cancelo, Martinelli, Mount, Foden, Jota, Antonio, Ronaldo, Dennis

Mark went with a dozen changes to his team with triple-ups on Arsenal, Liverpool, and Wolves. Most were as you would expect but Allan Saint-Maximin’s (£6.9m) name made me cause to pause – will this be a stroke of genius?

FPL General
  • IN – Robertson, Saiss, Tierney, Digne, Salah, Saka, Coutinho, Ramsey, Kane, Jimenez, Broja
  • OUT – Cancelo, Livramento, Cucurella, Dawson, Martinelli, Fernandes, Bowen, Jota, Ronaldo, Antonio, King

Triple-ups again on Liverpool and Arsenal but also Aston Villa rather than Wolves, as Lucas Digne (£5.1m), Phillipe Coutinho (£7.3m) and Jacob Ramsey (£4.8m) join the troops. He is also the only Wildcarder to go with Harry Kane (£12.2m), so it looks like the next few weeks will see FPL General make his move to catch Fabio and Az.

Geoff Dance
  • IN – Sa, Foster, Tierney, Robertson, Coady, Digne, Salah, Saka, Raphinha, Son, Ramsey, Jimenez, Lacazette, Broja
  • OUT – De Gea, Steele, Coufal, Cancelo, Rudiger, Regulion, Jota, Bowen, Foden, Mahrez, Fernandes, King, Dennis, Watkins

The Canadian Kingpin is another one to follow the Wildcard template but he went with Jose Sa (£5.2m) and Alexandre Lacazette (£8.3m), so probably didn’t appreciate the winning Arsenal strike on Thursday night being chalked up as an own-goal.

Tom Stephenson
  • IN – Sa, Dubravka, Van Dijk, Saiss, Tierney, Salah, Raphinha, Son, Ramsey, Broja, Lacazette, Jimenez
  • OUT – De Gea, Foster, Dawson, Duffy, Cancelo, Gray, Fernandes, Bowen, Jota, King, Ronaldo, Antonio

Tom followed the Wildcard template but Virgil van Dijk’s (£6.7m) inclusion started on a high note and the addition of Newcastle keeper Martin Dubravka (£4.4m) may yet prove to be a smart purchase.

LTFPL Andy
  • IN – Sa, Dubravka, Dawson, Cancelo, Livramento, Regulion, Salah, Son, Ramsey, Raphinha, Saka, Jimenez, Lacazette
  • OUT – De Gea, Foster, Van Dijk, Tierney, Saiss, Digne, Bowen, Foden, Trossard, Fernandes, Jota, King, Ronaldo

Bizarrely, Andy had exactly the same squad as Tom so read as above whilst I try and work out who is copying whose homework.

TRANSFERS

This is a summary of the transfers for this week:

  • Az – Jimenez, Lacazette, Salah (Ronaldo, Antonio, Jota)
  • LTFPL Andy – Wildcard
  • Fabio Borges – Weghorst, Jimenez, Salah, Raphinha (Pukki, Antonio, Fernandes, Jota)
  • Joe Lepper – Saka, Robertson, Ramsdale (Jota, Regulion, De Gea)
  • Geoff Dance – Wildcard
  • FPL General – Wildcard
  • Les Caldwell – Cornet, Weghorst, Kane, Salah (Jota, Antonio, Ronaldo, Fernandes)
  • Magnus Carlsen – Podence, Saka, Salah, Robertson (Rashford, Fernandes, Jota, Keane)
  • Mark Sutherns – Wildcard
  • FPL Matthew – Jimenez, Salah (Ronaldo, Jota)
  • Neale Rigg – Jimenez, Salah (Ronaldo, Jota)
  • Tom Freeman – Salah, Coutinho, Ramsdale (Fernandes, Jota, Guaita)
  • Tom Stephenson – Wildcard
  • Yavuz Kabuk – Cornet, Salah (Bernardo, Jota)
  • Zophar – Jimenez, Salah (Ronaldo, Jota)

For those who didn’t Wildcard, there were hits all around with Joe, Magnus, Fabio and Les taking minus eights.

Fabio and Magnus both brought in four players and all of them returned for these two star managers, and Daniel Podence’s (£5.5m) goal stood out as a winning gambit for the Chess Grandmaster.

TEMPLATE

The template for The Great and The Good is as follows with the number in brackets showing how many teams in which they appear:

  • De Gea (7), Foster (6)
  • Alexander-Arnold (15), Cancelo (10), Livramento (7), Digne (7), Tierney (5)
  • Salah (15), Bowen (11), Saka (8), Raphinha (8), Ramsey (6)
  • Jimenez (10), King (9), Dennis/Broja (5)

The template went through its own overhaul this week as Aaron Ramsdale (£5.1m), Kieran Tierney (£5.1m), Saka, Ramsey, Raul Jimenez (£7.5m) and Armando Broja (£5.5m) all come in, along with Mo who is now owned by all the managers.

CHIP PLANS

Everyone seems to be up for a bit of chip chat so worth checking in on the current usage by The Great and The Good:

This week was split between the Triple Captainers and the Wildcarders. An early blow was struck by the Salah supporters but time will tell which group will win the day over the next few weeks.

It’s worth nothing all those that Wildcarded had both Free Hit chips at their disposal. Yavuz, FPL Matthew, Zophar and Az were the only ones with that second weekly overhaul chip who held their nerve, although Az has already stated he is pulling the trigger in Gameweek 28.

From the set-up of the teams, it looks as though the five Wildcarders will play their Free Hit this week but it’s also worth noting that Joe has also flagged he is using his second Free Hit this week despite not planning to Wildcard until the later stages.

Fabio, Magnus, and Tom are the most intriguing, but I suspect they are looking to navigate the doubles in Gameweek 28 and 29 without the aid of a chip. Perhaps the biggest question is whether they will hold their second Free Hit for Gameweek 30 or beyond.

Whatever happens, this has become a fascinating period of the season with very different approaches to the Wildcard. Before anyone dismisses the importance of getting your plan in place, it’s worth reminding ourselves of the impact of the first Wildcard on the fortunes of The Great and The Good.

The table shows the effect of the initial Wildcard on rank over the next five weeks, with some pretty colour coding for those of a more visual persuasion.

You can see from the above that whilst it set up the likes of Az, FPL General up for success it did also give others a steeper mountain to climb. So, think once, think twice, think three times before playing those chips.

CONCLUSION

Thanks again for reading along, the next few weeks look to provide compelling FPL action. Whichever strategy you take, remember it’s about the long game. Success or otherwise of your season can only be determined at the end of the campaign.

Anyway, that’s all from me for and remember don’t have nightmares.

Why is their no independent thought amongst the GATG?

They are blowing a FH unnecessarily in 27 and almost all are blindly following a bloke who said not to triple captain Salah when he played Norwich and Leeds at home in a double gameweek (AKA Andy)?

Wrong. There was no need to FH in 27 if you wildcarded in 26. People just needed to think a little more!

I wildcarded in 26, but was able to get a solid 11 out this weekend without a FH (or hits) while having solid representation from LIV ARS. Now I get to save a FH for one of the upcoming big doubles.

The FH in 27 was so unnecessary, but no one challenged Andy on it.

YouTube and FFS aren't really set up for challenging ideas. We all just spout nonsense and look for confirmation.

Not sure why you'd WC in GW26 if you don't triple on Arsenal and Liverpool though, but maybe it made sense with the team you had before.

Viable strategy, but with virtually every team doubling in 36 I'll trust my regular team. Generally prefer to FH BGWs - or, even better, BGW with a few doubles sprinkled in

Many loaded up their 26 WC with players that doubled in 26 but blanked in 27 but also have games in 28 and double in 29.

The FH 27 meant planning for 28 & double 29 with the WC in 26.

If you played your WC in 26 are not playing the FH in 27 then it looks like you have missed a trick with your planning for future game weeks 😉

GW27 and GW30 were the best times to use the free hits imo.

GW27 FH is nice because you can carry Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea players into the coming DGWs, which will hugely alleviate the incoming transfer congestion.

But GW30 FH is a must in my eyes. So few games, and very few good teams likely to play. You don't want to load up on crappy players just to get through it, and then cripple yourself long-term. So FH makes a lot of sense there to carry the quality players out the other side.

      1. Deulofail
        • 10 Years
        4 years, 1 month ago

Crappy players ain't an issue if you have a WC. Besides, Arsenal players and Wolves defenders are crappy, while Raphinha and Villa players could still be assets. And with money in the back, you could probably make some meaningful changes and get to a good place with FTs or a hit or two.

        1. Deulofail

Wouldn't the WC be better served to set up a major bench boost in GW36? You could dead end into the blank GW33, then WC in 34.

I guess there are multiple ways of doing it. I hope someone will do some chip analysis at the end of the season to see how it all pans out long-term and which strategy is best. I'm pretty confident with my strategy, been building for it over several months. But I guess a lot of it is team dependant. If you suddenly wake up and realise your team is ill-equipped and you need to use a chip, I guess you have no choice.

          1. Deulofail
            • 10 Years
            4 years, 1 month ago

Which strategy is best is only useful to know beforehand, and it's team-dependent, so I can't say I'll be interested to know which ideas did better than others since the variability of real-life events makes it non-transferrable season-to-season imo.

I might hold off my WC to GW32 or 33. I'll have a lot of money in the back to bring in a premium player or two after GW30 without issues.

I guess the main issue is when we will know when the fixtures are, and I must confess I personally haven't a clue.

            1. Piggs Boson
              • 14 Years
              4 years, 1 month ago

I think there is some information that could be transferable. Like whether it's better to use FHs to navigate blanks or to hit DGWs. Over a huge sample size the situational circumstances would probably average out.

Yep, the exact fixture dates are unknown. But at least we know what teams are due a double, so can focus our transfers bringing those players in over a long period time, provided they're of the required quality.

                I don't agree, but that's okay 🙂

Also don't agree, since we have FHs, we need to know when the fixtures to land to know which players to bring in

          2. Nate(U)dog(ie)
            • 5 Years

The problem for me with this plan is that the DGW is too late in the season. I used mine in GW25 as I had a number of players I wanted that I felt, if I got the jump on, would be worth going for earlier and could give me a boost while keeping me set up for a while. As it was my other targets for DGW26 were transferred in before the DGW28+29 fixtures were announced but both had doubles so I felt better about my planning.

I feel using WC with 3-4 weeks to go, at a time where some positions will be decided early, means thar you could end up relying on players that could be rotated a lot or that are "on the beach" as they have little to aim for, so I felt FH for DGW36 made more sense as you could target those fighting relegation / for Europe without having to rely on them for 3-4 weeks.

That's fair. I'm sure some people were struck by an unfortunate set of injuries too. Very team dependant.

I shouldn't be so rigid and dismissive of alternative strategies.

Eh? Confused. There is no right or wrong way to play? TC26 was not wrong, WC26 was not wrong, FH27 was not wrong, WC28 is not wrong, stop putting people down for playing the game they want to play it

It's tricky to get the wildcard right at the best of times.

Doing so in response to fixture announcements with a late flurry to sacrifice TC on a plumb Salah double does seem an odd approach.

I guess there were so many points around and most had Salah 56 points no discernable damage last week was done, so far.

There was a lot of panic last Friday night when the doubles dropped. High profile FPL pundits were flailing around like Michael Stipe in the losing my religion music video and so they bowed and prayed to a neon God they made (namely, Andy's WC26/FH27 strategy ... Which advocated deactivated the triple captain chip from the greatest FPL player in history when he had the juiciest double in living memory).

Can't blame Andy at all! He says again and again that its team dependant and what he does with his team may not be relevant to your own.

Wildcarding this week made sense to me for several reasons:

To put out a decent side in GW27 with no hits saving a FH.
It enabled me to set up for 11-12 DGWers in GW28 in preparation for BB
Most of the DGW28 players I have picked also play in the blank GW30 so it saves a FH there too.
I will now have two FH's to use in DGWs.

It's a typo, 2nd Klich is on the bench. Lineup pic says he starts.

Him playing on was worse. He would have been monitored this week and given the all clear.

Supposedly that may be the reason why he isn't regarded as being concussed, because the initial diagnosis (when the injury first happened) was that he was fine but he clearly deteriorated soon afterwards. Some improvements have been made with the protocols but they really don't seem to be detailed enough

Spurs have won 2 of the last 3.

The one Leeds won was right after Jose had been sacked and you guys had just lost the League Cup. Weren't exactly sky high.

Just noticed that GW37 likely to be just as big a DGW as GW36, as it currently stands 😯
    https://twitter.com/MikkelTokvam/status/1497204099518971926/photo/1

Wow, that period is gonna be huge. Potential double doubles for big teams like Liverpool, City, Chelsea, West Ham.

Unreliable source imo, this guy and Crellin are wrong on a regular basis this year.

For context, for the doubles in 26, he had some if not most of those teams as 5-10% likely to double. Crellin is guessing, and this guy is guessing based on Crellin's guesses.

30 will be small, 36 will be big and 33 has the potential to be messy, that's all we know.

      1. Piggs Boson
        • 14 Years

Yeah, It's all just playing the odds, no one can know for sure. Unlikely things happen all the time.

But there are many weeks where it is impossible to have a DGW for certain teams. And that boosts the odds elsewhere. It's constantly changing, but I think that image above is a pretty fair representation of the current landscape.

All we can do is play the odds.

Hard disagree. Been planning for doubles using these exact resources since WC in GW23 & the way the fixtures have panned out has been perfect for my team (Ars/Liv/Wol triple ups in place early). Only one I can think of that didnt work out is Villa DGW

      3. Vlekz
          4 years, 1 month ago

5-10% chance of a double also means they can actually double. Isn't wrong.

GW37 can be a double, but GW's 33 and 36 are more likely to be the big DGWs because they don't clash with European competitions. I wouldn't be surprised if we get two or three DGW fixtures then however, featuring teams like Chelsea and Leicester who are likely to have more fixtures to be arranged than can be accommodated in GW33 and 36, and can't play on other midweeks because of their European fixtures (if they progress).

Not sure if GW 33 will be that big.. Semi final of FA Cup on same dates.. Clubs still in competition will see their matches moved to mid week same GW.. not sure you if there will be interesting players who doubles

It won't be as big as GW36 for that season, but there will still be plenty of clubs who play at the weekend that can DGW which depending on the FA Cup results.

Non fh-er, success of gw comes down to (K)ane outscoring Weghorst.

Good morning all and best of luck to you all today!! Which 3 players with a double next gameweek would you say are the highest priority??

I have Sa, Coady, Bednarek, Dennis, Raphinha and JWP at the moment!!

      Cheers everyone!!

        Raphinha, Jimenez, Adams

But Southampton abd Wolves defenders looking good too. Coutinho and Villa could also do great

Cheers mate!! Have Raphinha and double Wolves defence and Southampton defender so really happy about that!! Coutinho comes in fro Bowen I think and then I need to decide about what to do with Dennis, him to Adams interests me and I have Maupay so would bench him this week ready for his double the week after

        Jimenez, Coutinho/Ramsey, Borja/Adams
Now if Chelsea gets an extra match, Rudiger becomes essential too

A little survey about chip 'value".

Assuming WCs have been used, what order do you value TC, BB and FH.

      i reckon

      BB
      FH
      TC

        I'd flip that.

        BB over rated often.

I reckon you could make an argument for any order. 😆

Arguably FH could be the most powerful but it isn't "additive" like the other two.

I disagree, i think free hit is beautiful to navigate a big blank.

Relatively it can be c powerful compared to 4 or 5 players and hits.

BB is obviously best for dgw but it can throw all sense out of the window with it.

It become an obsession for many.

        2. Piggs Boson
          • 14 Years

I agree with TC over BB, these cheap 4.5m-5.5m players on your bench often blank even in good fixtures. BB so often disappoints.

Whereas the big hitters have long-term consistency, and are in reliably good teams. Over a couple of strong fixtures the odds of a huge return go up far more than for a bench boost imo.

The aim of a bench boost for me is to get 4 cheap DGWers to bank the 16 appearance points. Anything extra is a bonus.

          FH is very powerful.

          For me it's:

          1. WC
          2. FH
          3. TC
          4. BB
