Having escaped Gameweek 27 relatively unscathed, with a -4 taken and a healthy score of 61 points, I have been trying to work out the opportune time to use my chips, as I’m in the fortunate position of having two Free Hits, a Bench Boost and a Wildcard to use before the end of the season.

Thanks to the news that Chelsea have landed an attractive-looking Double Gameweek 28, against Burnley and Norwich, I’ve decided that there’s enough of an “upside” here to pull the trigger.

So, here we are. I’ve pressed the button and made 14 changes to my side. What can possibly go wrong…? I’m pretty much set on 10 of my starting XI, but the final spot is likely to go right to the wire.

Below, I’ll outline the players I’ve selected and why I’ve chosen them, with so many options to consider this week.

Goalkeeper and Defence

Jimenez ends goal drought as Arsenal claim convincing north London derby win 8

The goalkeeper was an easy choice, with Jose Sá (£5.3m) the stand-out option for me this week. Edouard Mendy (£6.1m) was also a consideration, and those looking for security of starts can do no better than the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) winner. Similarly, if I wanted to triple up on Chelsea at the back, I’d also turn to Mendy, but there is a midfielder that I have my eye on (more on him later) along with the two Blues defenders I’ve selected at the back.

The reason for wanting to get as much coverage of Chelsea’s backline is pretty simple. Thomas Tuchel’s side play arguably the league’s two most blunt attacks in their Double Gameweek. Over their last six matches, Burnley and Norwich have (by some distance) the lowest non-penalty expected goals (xG) totals of all teams in the league. Furthermore, if we look at Chelsea’s last six matches in the Premier League (which granted is a bit disjointed due to their other cup commitments), they are performing the third-best in the league, behind Arsenal and Liverpool, and having had a tough fixture run during this period to boot. Clearly, Norwich and Burnley will have their work cut out to get any joy against the Blues.

Reece James (£6.2m) is the most exciting pick, although there is a risk he won’t play both matches of the double. I’m willing to take the chance, however, and his cameos in recent cup matches are encouraging. There is also a sizeable turnaround between the two matches (five days), so if he does line up against Burnley, I would be confident of another start versus Norwich, too.

Above: Attacking data over each team’s last six matches, with Double Gameweek 28 teams highlighted

Above: Defensive data over each team’s last six matches, with Double Gameweek 28 teams highlighted

I’ve also decided to go for two Wolves players, even though the above tables show that they have been on the decline a bit in recent Gameweeks. This likely means more save points for the aforementioned Sa, however, who is making a stop every 24.5 minutes: only Ilian Meslier (£4.8m) and Hugo Lloris (£5.4m) beat that of all first-choice goalkeepers.

My selection in the Wolves backline is Romain Saiss (£5.0m). His two goals is the best from the Wolves defence, equal with Conor Coady (£4.8m), and while Rayan Ait Nouri (£4.4m) looks good value as well, I’m banking on the security of starts I get from Saiss, as well as better attacking statistics than Coady (for example, a goal attempt every 140 minutes versus one every 291 minutes).

There are certainly other options here if you don’t want to put all your eggs in the Wolves and Chelsea basket. Southampton have a couple of good options in Kyle Walker-Peters (£4.8m) (if passed fit) and Tino Livramento (£4.4m), and Lucas Digne (£5.1m) could also punish me as I remove him from my team on the Free Hit. Newcastle are also showing improved defensive resolve as of late, and a left-field punt on someone like Dan Burn (£4.4m) playing against his former club might not be a completely ridiculous move for anyone looking for a differential. Taking out the likes of Trent Alexander-Arnold (£8.5m) and Joao Cancelo (£7.1m) does fill me with fear, but at least they have tricky opponents on paper in West Ham and Manchester United respectively.

What do to here. Really stuck:

    Ramsdale
    Cancello, TAA, Cash, Al Nouri
    Salah,Saka,Jota
    Dennis, Laca

    Moura, Bowen, De Gea, Dalot

Play 5atm and get Chelsea in?
    Or do Moura to Ramsey?

Sorry, I'm probably being really dense, but I can only see 14 players! A forward missing?

I would move Dalot for Chelsea DEF? Maybe bench your third forward?

Sorry mate, its me. Theres Antionio also.

            What would you do here?

Think I can get away with a free transfer here as dont want to bench Cancelo or TAA really.

Just realised I can get chelsea in straight swap for Dalot. Not enough funds. So Moura would have to go as well.

Please note the following RMWCT is for someone who has no financial interests in ML this year (although I am second in my mini-league which is mostly for pride at this point - by three points, 43 clear of third) and my main focus is OR this year as I'm currently at 36,484. For these reasons you will see some differentials and please see the reasons in my replies to my own post, but I am open to recommendations/conversations about potential changes. All in all, I am NOT set on this team (yet).

    Sa, Foster
    Trent, Robbo, Cancelo, James, Rudi
    Salah, Foden, Ziyech, Maddi, Bowen
    Jimi, Broja, Gelhardt
    0.1 ITB

This would be my wildcard team.
I plan on using my FH in GW30 then I will probably BB in GW36 that everyone is talking about.

I understand that people will say "but Tuchel said *James* played more minutes than he was supposed too". Yeah cool, it's my wildcard, this is supposed to be the team for the rest of the season with minor tweaks. If I lose a point or two this week because his minutes are managed I believe he'll make up for them over the remaining 10-12 games

      I understand *Foden* hasn't been the best, but I looked at City's midfield (if he doesn't perform well - note he's playing as False 9 a lot - then he can be switched easily too - recommendations welcome);
Bernardo - Started all of the last 6, one attacking return. Been there, done that, had him for the haul
Sterling - Started all of the last 6, didn't make 60 minutes in one fixture, five attacking returns (in two games) too expensive
Kevin - Started five of the last 6, three attacking returns, blanked in last two, dropped for Norwich - also too expensive
Mahrez - Started two of the last 6, red hot form prior to AFCON, minutes are a big risk - too expensive
Gundo - Started three of the last 6, not really known for being attacking, susceptible to rotation

I understand that *Ziyech* is a risk, especially with James returning, but he has three goals in his last three games (with clean sheets and six bonus points). The dude is on fire, he has a slight knock and unfortunately Mount is 0.1 more than what I can afford if I ditch Ziyech. I'm willing to give him a punt and if not open to swapping him (recommendations welcome)

*Gelhardt* is my biggest concern of the squad, but hoping that Jesse Marsch comments about favouring rotation might work in his favour, he does after-all have one goal and three assists in 385 minutes of PL football, which isn't awful for 4.6M

*Jimi* depending on form can be upgraded to Antonio (if he regains form - goal v Southampton in FA Cup and assist v Wolves last GW) but I'd like to see what he can do in his next four FDR2 games (plus double).

To touch upon the Gelhardt selection, I think it is a good one. I can see him playing a lot more minutes (I reckon he starts) and being someone who will benefit from the manager change. He's an impressive young player and Marsch won't be afraid to play him as he should suit his system well (from what I know of it).

Only thing I'm annoyed with myself is, I've been loyal to him for weeks and I switched him out for other player price swings not expecting to bring him back (I had him at 4.5 instead of 4.6 so I lost 0.1 on taking him out then bringing him back).

I finally ditched Gelhardt after weeks of expecting something and him only playing once (I think?)

“Upgraded” to Broja just so I’ve at least got a playing 3rd striker.

I’m really not sold on Jimenez, as a Wolves fan I’m obviously hoping we get some results, and in an FPL sense if we win 1-0 he’s usually good for a 9 pointer. But not seeing him as a priority transfer tbh

I don't like it because of structure.

It isn't well balanced imo and is very lacking in captaincy picks. No Spurs is crazy as well considering their strong run of games to end the season.

      1. Zenith UK

This would be the alternative to compensate for Son. Also, no need for captaincy picks when Salah gets the armband week-in, week-out. My post below summarises why no Son though, it's laughable Tottenham.

        Ziyech & Foden > Son & Gorden/4.5

        Squad for GW28 would be;
        Sa*
        Trent, Robbo, Cancelo, James*, Rudi*
        Salah (c), Son, Maddi, Bowen
        Jimi

        Foster, Broja, Gordon, Gelhardt

It's better with Son and Gordon. But still, the super heavy at the back structure like that is very unappealing to me unless you're confident captaining Cancelo and James as City and Chelsea assets when they have good games.

Considering I have BB though, is it better? Does Son outscore Ziyech?

Also I only need to captain someone in GW32 when Salah plays City and that could easily be James/Rudi/Ziyech. Even Bowen against Brentford.

Yes. Son outscores Ziyech by a lot imo.

I think captaining Salah this week is not great. West Ham aren't that obliging a defense. There are good DGW options. You just need to be brave.

If you have BB I would definitely not do what you've done. Your bench of Gordon, Gelhardt, Broja and Foster will not be a strong BB no matter what. It's way better to have cheap defenders like Kilman with a DGW for a BB than those guys.

If you didn't have BB left, I can see the logic. But since you do, there's no way I would have that sort of structure.

4 premium defenders in a 4-5-1 or 4-4-2 at most. Would pick up Kilman/Livra/Amartey as 5th defenders.

    People have been saying the following;

    A) WC 33/34 so you can get nearly a full squad of DGWers in 36
    B) FH in 36 so you can get a full squad of DGWers

My response is this for each team (brackets = # of unscheduled fixtures remaining).

    - Everton (3) - LOL, no thanks
    - Leicester (3) - Only want Maddison, maybe Vardy if he rediscovers form (Everton/Norwich fixtures could be juicy)
    - Burnley (3) - Think we've learned from their last double
    - Arsenal (2) - Not overly convinced by anyone, would take White, but I like the backline I've made and their games in hand are Spurs away and Chelsea away...
    - Chelsea (2) - Covered
    - Newcastle (1) - Willock at the most? Prefer my midfield (easy to bring in though if I see a run of form for the likes of Maddi/Bowen if either fall off the pace - even Ziyech and Foden could get dropped quickly)
    - Aston Villa (1) - Digne? Coutinho? Ramsey? Again all easy to get in and with the exception of a CS against Brighton all blanked last three GWs
    - Spurs (1) - ... :'D LOL (Also unscheduled game is Arsenal - derby's are unpredictable)
    - Norwich (1) - Enough said
    - Watford (1) - Enough said... Maybe Sarr if he finds some form (have Foster as back-up GK - for BB purposes)
    - Brighton (1) - Extra fixture is City...
    - Southampton (1) - Plan on having Broja (Livra to be monitored)

In my egregious quest to solve my work frustrations with dopaminal FPL escapism, I made my transfers while the FA Cup games were going on, completely forgetting that GW30 fixtures depended on them and weren't yet as cemented as they were in my head, for some reason.

I brought in Rudiger for a hit, and luckily Chelsea got through by the skin of their teeth, so the DO double this GW. Phew.

But I also brought in Adams for King for a hit, both doubling, assuming Adams played in GW30. Whyyy? So now I need another hit if I want 11 players in GW30. -8 for 1 extra fixture dammit.

I brought in JWP the week before (part of a -12) also under the assumption that a fixture in GW30 was a sure thing. What's wrong with me?

I sold Bowen this week (who has a fixture in GW30) for Raphinha, thinking that Bowen was going to blank in GW30 for some reason. Another -4 for no extra fixture.

    I am a suboptimal man.

Adams for King is not a bad deal, you can delay the FH to GW30. Its not like DGW29 fixtures are any good, pretty meh set of fixtures.

Thanks for the suggestion, but delaying FH to GW30 would be pretty mad for me, since I already have 9 players for that week, and I lose a ton of ground on people who have already been executing that strategy.

It's not about need though is it. I'm on a different strategy to you, and that includes maximising fixtures in GW30 to make up lost ground in other areas. You also don't need to do anything else. Not sure what your point is

Bruno>Son this week, or wait a week? The saving allows me to unload King (finally!) next week to get Laca back in.

    FOSTER
    Trent COADY Davies
    Salah(c) Bruno RAPHA(vc) Bowen
    Antonio Weghorst KING

    Sanchez Dias White Brownhill

Do it this week for sure, the feeling of getting rid of King would be almost as good as gaining Son ....

Thanks going to get Son in and done. It's only the Jota injury that's meant I'm not bringing Salah back for Bruno anyway as Son would have been in last week for Salah if you get my drift.

So Saint Maximin is still injured.... transfer him out for Jiminez?

Best to wait for the press conferences but if he's out then makes sense to get rid

Peeps on a WC. Are you keeping Trent and benching for this GW?

Keeping but will probably bench Van Dijk instead.

I used my WC and kept Trent. Just don't think he can be benched. Capable of 20+ points on his day

    Hows this look?
WC this week to BB next week. Try to get through with maybe 10 players GW30

    Dubra (Foster)
    Tsilva TAA Kilman (cancelo/white)
    Ramsay Raph Salah Coutinho (Saka)
    Jimenez Kane Broja

Gives me 8 DGWers for 28
7 DGWers for 29 (with free transfer to Spurs/arsenal)
    10 Playing for Blank GW30

No playing GK for GW30 is a no for me

Yeh I cant figure a way out around it unfortunately. I have 0 ITB. I dont see any realistic downgrades to up the GK funds to be able to manage it.

Get rid of Cancelo or Willock for Coutinho

I don't think its worth it. Would rather have no playing keeper for GW30 than drop those guys.
Cancelo wouldnt be able to afford him back had him since start of season virtually.
Coutinho has a big ceiling for this GW + he plays in Gw30.

Would you sell Cancelo with 1 FT for Chelsea def?

    Sa, Foster
    Trent VVD Cancelo Kilman White
    Raph Salah Son Saka Ramsey
    Jimi Laca Broja

    (Bench boosting)

For me, No, Ive had him so long I would really struggle to get him back.

    2. DycheDycheBaby

He could drop 0.1 over the weekend but if you have loads of value tied up in him then probably no, unless you don't plan to get him back.
Think he might even be a little differential with so many transfers out and wildcards played.

    Who wins?

    A) Coutinho (SOU, lee, whm)
    B) Willock (BHA, sou, che, eve)

    Hi all,

Should I WC this team? (Have FH left)

    Ramsdale
    Cancello, TAA, Cash, Al Nouri
    Salah,Saka,Jota
    Dennis, Laca, Antonio

    Moura, Bowen, De Gea, Dalot

Cant seem to get enough DGW cover in with Chelsea, saints wolves etc...

No. Maybe take a hit or 2. Bowen to coutinho, antonio to Adams, cancelo to rudi or something

Who would you bench with two transfers?

Can do Antonio to Adams np and like the transfer, but in order to get chelsea def id need to bench Cancello. -4 to bench cancello seems crazy?

Could just do Antonio to Adams and close my eyes for the rest.

Ward-Prowse or Coutinho ? And why is Digne so constantly rated, selected and talked about, for a player who rarely delivers ?

      Rather cash over digne.

      Couthino for me.
