We round up the key Fantasy Premier League (FPL) talking points from Tottenham Hotspur v Newcastle United in our Scout Notes summary.

The graphics below are taken from LiveFPL, Ragabolly’s excellent and ever-improving website (which now has a new look!), and our own Premium Members Area.

SPURS HIT FIVE BUT NO GOALS FOR KANE

Harry Kane (£12.5m) put in an excellent attacking display against Newcastle on Sunday, but failed to find the net, ending the match with a solitary assist.

The England captain racked up five shots in total, but none were on target, with most of the big chances falling to team-mate Son Heung-min (£10.9m).

“When the game has finished, I went on to the pitch to my players and I said to Harry (Kane) I was disappointed in only one thing that he didn’t score because he played an amazing game. He’s a world class striker and he deserves the best. He’s a great worker and this is not normal. Normally the players that have talent don’t like to work hard because they have the talent. I didn’t have talent so I had to work hard. He was a big example for his team-mates. When you see him working in this way, for sure you have the desire to continue to work and work very hard. For this reason, I want to tell him thanks and I hope to give him satisfaction. I think now he’s enjoying playing this type of football. Now we need to continue together.” – Antonio Conte on Harry Kane

After a tricky first-half against a well-drilled Magpies outfit, Spurs responded in emphatic fashion with five different goalscorers: defensive trio Ben Davies (£4.4m), Matt Doherty (£4.8m) and Emerson Royal (£4.5m), plus Son and substitute Steven Bergwijn (£5.9m).

With Sergio Reguilon (£5.2m) injured, wing-back Doherty shifted over to the left-flank, where he produced his third double-digit haul in six matches via a goal, assist and maximum bonus.

“On Friday we lost Reguilon for an injury in his knee and we have found a solution to play with Matt (Doherty) on the left and Emerson (Royal) on the right. It means there is great work behind the tactical and physical aspect.” – Antonio Conte

“They came out and played well and caused us a bit of trouble in the first half. We didn’t really get going. At half-time we just said to stay calm and trust our game and the ability and that chances would come. The manager wants us to defend at the back post and be at the back post at the other end. I was fortunate enough to score and set one up and contribute to the win. Goal difference didn’t cross my mind at all really. It was just to get the game won. Four and five are the bonus really. All we can do is focus on what we are doing and the pressure goes on to other teams.” – Matt Doherty

For Son, he has now scored nine goals in his last nine top-flight home appearances. His overall tally of 11 home goals is the most of any player, while 115 points on home turf is another league-leading tally:

As a result of today’s victory, Tottenham have now won four of their past five league games.

Notably, they have also scored at least twice in each of their five most recent fixtures, while since Antonio Conte’s first game in charge, only Liverpool and Manchester City have earned more points in the Premier League than Spurs.

THREE DEFEATS IN A ROW FOR NEWCASTLE

Following Sunday’s heavy defeat, Newcastle have now lost three Premier League games in a row.

Prior to Gameweek 31, the Magpies hadn’t conceded more than once in any of their last 11 Premier League matches, letting in just eight goals in total.

However, despite finding themselves in front against the run of play, they suffered a heavy defeat, with Javier Manquillo (£3.9m) and Matt Targett (£4.7m) struggling to defend the wide areas.

Thankfully, they now have three consecutive home games to regroup, starting with Wolverhampton Wanderers in Friday’s Gameweek 32 opener.

“We contributed to that (score). We were 1-0 up, and executing a good plan. We were controlling them as best we could. We did the first part of the game well. The second goal is the key thing. It’s what we didn’t need to do. We chased the game in a way you can’t against this type of team. We took risks, and didn’t execute it well enough. Against these teams, you have to get every aspect of your game right. In the second half, we didn’t.

We’re still in a huge fight to stay in the division. That’s six away games in seven. Now we return home, and they’ll be massive games. After a second half like that you want to play again very quickly. I want to put the memory of this game away.” – Eddie Howe

Fabian Schar’s (£4.3m) free-kick goal proved scant consolation, but set-pieces are clearly an area Eddie Howe is working on. In fact, seven of Newcastle’s last 11 goals have come from dead-ball situations.

Speaking after the 5-1 defeat, Howe, also provided an injury update on Kieran Trippier (£4.9m).

“His injury is healing, it’s not totally healed. We will be able to start pushing him, maybe not as quickly as we initially wanted to, but I still think he’ll come back this season. Again, there’s no definitive date on that but he’s making good progress.” – Eddie Howe on Kieran Trippier

Tottenham Hotspur XI: Lloris, Romero, Dier, Davies, Royal (Bergwijn 81), Bentancur (Winks 75), Hojbjerg, Doherty, Kulusevski (Moura 76), Son, Kane

Newcastle United XI: Dubravka, Manquillo (Guimaraes 59), Schar, Burn, Targett, Shelvey, Willock, Joelinton (Murphy 59), Fraser, Saint-Maximin, Wood (Lascelles 70)

Even though Spurs are doing well, city can’t afford to drop any points especially if they lose to pool. City are more reliable.

Got the exact funds to do Digne + Broja to Cancelo + Gelhardt for -4.

Is it worth an early transfer to get it done or too risky with champs league midweek? or even worth the move at all?

      I would wait.
Nice transfer, if Gel is 3rd on the bench.
If you are about to get priced out, i would do the transfer and cross my fingers for midweek.

There’s usually another way to get to your moves. I’d wait for European games first. Rather find an alternate route than having to take unnecessary hits because of early transfers.

Not sure what other move I'd do tbf.
        Team currently looks like...

        Sa/ Ramsdale
        TAA/ James/ Digne/ Doherty/ Livra
        Salah/ Son/ Kulu/ Saka/ Raphinha
        Laca/ Broja/ Weghorst

I would be priced out if any price changes happen so I am tempted to make the move.

Sounds like Trippier probably won't make GW33 then, and Newcastle's defensive solidity may have waned a bit. Add in ManUtd's consistency in being inconsistent and I'm starting to wonder how much of a benefit I'll really get from FH33. Wonder if I should just keep it for another week but they're running out, and if I do end up using my second one in GW37 then it means I have to use it by GW35 at the latest.

      BB in 36?
If not, FH 36 and 38 seems cheeky.

      1. Nate(U)dog(ie)
        • 5 Years
        3 years, 11 months ago

I don't have BB, just 2 FH. FH36 was the initial plan but I think I'll have a very solid set of doublers without it so I was thinking FH37 made more sense

    3. FPL_Crisis
      • Fantasy Football Scout Member

What are you doing for gw36?
There should be extra doubles for Leicester and Villa, whether that’s enough upside outside of gw36

      1. Nate(U)dog(ie)
        • 5 Years
        3 years, 11 months ago

I think I'll be good to have lots of doublers for 36 without FH. Pras did an article last week and said it seems like the likes of Norwich and Leicester and other less owned teams will double in 37 while the likes of Spurs, Arsenal and Liverpool will double in 36, with a chance City and/or Chelsea doubling in 37, so while my first plan was for FH36, I think I might get better usage from one in 37. But it blocks 36 and 38 if I do

I'm going to have to play it in 33 really (have 2FHs and BB). But probably won't go mad loading up on DGW players.

I see your points. Still feels wrong for me tough. Thats why i sold Laca with an upcoming double to free up funds, instead of Son. Got Kulu and Kane also. Reckon thats one too many in the long term, and ill sell one of the two.

Totally fair. Bought Kane and kept Kulu. Sold Doherty for Matip who has better CS prospects just didn’t expect the 14 point hauls vs Newcastle.

Too be fair, who did? Spurs usually dont keep CS as you said, and Newcastle is on the up. An assist or an odd goal and no bps at the max, didnt imagine both and 3 bps.
              Kulu is top value!

Salah going down in price tonight

I'm annoyed I did Son to Salah. Didn't feel great getting rid of Son ahead of a home game but that's what EO will do to you.

Got to reverse EO for rank gain and ignore FPL Twitter and here and YouTube etc

Depends what your seasons ambitions are.

Sounds obvious but EO helps you maintain your rank.

If you want to take a risk to climb then go against EO but obviously means you could also significantly drop rank too.

    Start one of:-
    A)Rudiger
    B)Cancelo
Leaning towards A here, as chelsea double def EO must be pretty low and a CS here could help in a decent rise in an otherwise very template season.

Bruno looked awful in that false 9 role. Needs CR7 back so Bruno can play no10.

It is tough, options are so limited. Maybe weggy but so boring, maybe Nacho if Vardy isn’t back. I guess ASM possibly, personally wouldn’t go near Wood. 4.5 and upgrade elsewhere?

Hi....wondering what to do here with 1ft and 0 cash? Will use my last free hit in 36 or 37

Maybe coutinho to martinelli? Can't see decent option to Bruno for 33...so may captain saka for the double....

    Dubravka (sa)
    Taa cancelo rudiger doherty (vvd)
    Salah coutinho saka kulu (ramsey)
    Kane weg (broja)

    Thanks

As one of those who last minute sold Son for Salah, should I

    1. Kneejerk Son straight back in for Salah
    2. Salah > Bruno
    3. Other

Reason I’m considering 2 is I want to keep option of not using my FH in 33 but later.

    Cheers guys.

    Pope
    TAA Robbo Cancelo
    Salah Saka Kulu Coutinho Raphinha
    Kane Broja
    Foster Cucho White AitNouri

Cout/Raph/Ait > [tbc] Maddison Foden Schar?

Asked this earlier but continue to be stuck:

    Sa > 1FT

    A) Pope (chasing cash ML rival in 2nd has him, should I bring him in to block him?)

    B) Schmeichel (cheaper, will allow me to bolster squad for poss BB in 33)

    Thanks in advance!

    1. WhatWouldYourZlatanSay
      • 10 Years

Both have a dgw in 33 and I think Pope is likely to score a few points more over the 2 gws. However, 0.6 is not an insignificant amount. Any ideas how you’d use the extra?

      1. Danstoke82
        • 11 Years

        Raph > Maddison/Barnes
        Ramsey > Fraser
        Foster > Dubravka

That’s my plan which would enable me to use BB

I never considered Schmeichel until he was mentioned to me this evening now really got me thinking as was all in on Pope before.

With Sa’s upcoming blank I was pondering playing Foster v Brentford but obvs better options that have a DGW and the saving on Schmeichel could really help
