We round up the key Fantasy Premier League (FPL) talking points from Tottenham Hotspur v Newcastle United in our Scout Notes summary.

The graphics below are taken from LiveFPL, Ragabolly’s excellent and ever-improving website (which now has a new look!), and our own Premium Members Area.

SPURS HIT FIVE BUT NO GOALS FOR KANE

Harry Kane (£12.5m) put in an excellent attacking display against Newcastle on Sunday, but failed to find the net, ending the match with a solitary assist.

The England captain racked up five shots in total, but none were on target, with most of the big chances falling to team-mate Son Heung-min (£10.9m).

“When the game has finished, I went on to the pitch to my players and I said to Harry (Kane) I was disappointed in only one thing that he didn’t score because he played an amazing game. He’s a world class striker and he deserves the best. He’s a great worker and this is not normal. Normally the players that have talent don’t like to work hard because they have the talent. I didn’t have talent so I had to work hard. He was a big example for his team-mates. When you see him working in this way, for sure you have the desire to continue to work and work very hard. For this reason, I want to tell him thanks and I hope to give him satisfaction. I think now he’s enjoying playing this type of football. Now we need to continue together.” – Antonio Conte on Harry Kane

After a tricky first-half against a well-drilled Magpies outfit, Spurs responded in emphatic fashion with five different goalscorers: defensive trio Ben Davies (£4.4m), Matt Doherty (£4.8m) and Emerson Royal (£4.5m), plus Son and substitute Steven Bergwijn (£5.9m).

With Sergio Reguilon (£5.2m) injured, wing-back Doherty shifted over to the left-flank, where he produced his third double-digit haul in six matches via a goal, assist and maximum bonus.

“On Friday we lost Reguilon for an injury in his knee and we have found a solution to play with Matt (Doherty) on the left and Emerson (Royal) on the right. It means there is great work behind the tactical and physical aspect.” – Antonio Conte

“They came out and played well and caused us a bit of trouble in the first half. We didn’t really get going. At half-time we just said to stay calm and trust our game and the ability and that chances would come. The manager wants us to defend at the back post and be at the back post at the other end. I was fortunate enough to score and set one up and contribute to the win. Goal difference didn’t cross my mind at all really. It was just to get the game won. Four and five are the bonus really. All we can do is focus on what we are doing and the pressure goes on to other teams.” – Matt Doherty

For Son, he has now scored nine goals in his last nine top-flight home appearances. His overall tally of 11 home goals is the most of any player, while 115 points on home turf is another league-leading tally:

As a result of today’s victory, Tottenham have now won four of their past five league games.

Notably, they have also scored at least twice in each of their five most recent fixtures, while since Antonio Conte’s first game in charge, only Liverpool and Manchester City have earned more points in the Premier League than Spurs.

THREE DEFEATS IN A ROW FOR NEWCASTLE

Following Sunday’s heavy defeat, Newcastle have now lost three Premier League games in a row.

Prior to Gameweek 31, the Magpies hadn’t conceded more than once in any of their last 11 Premier League matches, letting in just eight goals in total.

However, despite finding themselves in front against the run of play, they suffered a heavy defeat, with Javier Manquillo (£3.9m) and Matt Targett (£4.7m) struggling to defend the wide areas.

Thankfully, they now have three consecutive home games to regroup, starting with Wolverhampton Wanderers in Friday’s Gameweek 32 opener.

“We contributed to that (score). We were 1-0 up, and executing a good plan. We were controlling them as best we could. We did the first part of the game well. The second goal is the key thing. It’s what we didn’t need to do. We chased the game in a way you can’t against this type of team. We took risks, and didn’t execute it well enough. Against these teams, you have to get every aspect of your game right. In the second half, we didn’t.

We’re still in a huge fight to stay in the division. That’s six away games in seven. Now we return home, and they’ll be massive games. After a second half like that you want to play again very quickly. I want to put the memory of this game away.” – Eddie Howe

Fabian Schar’s (£4.3m) free-kick goal proved scant consolation, but set-pieces are clearly an area Eddie Howe is working on. In fact, seven of Newcastle’s last 11 goals have come from dead-ball situations.

Speaking after the 5-1 defeat, Howe, also provided an injury update on Kieran Trippier (£4.9m).

“His injury is healing, it’s not totally healed. We will be able to start pushing him, maybe not as quickly as we initially wanted to, but I still think he’ll come back this season. Again, there’s no definitive date on that but he’s making good progress.” – Eddie Howe on Kieran Trippier

Tottenham Hotspur XI: Lloris, Romero, Dier, Davies, Royal (Bergwijn 81), Bentancur (Winks 75), Hojbjerg, Doherty, Kulusevski (Moura 76), Son, Kane

Newcastle United XI: Dubravka, Manquillo (Guimaraes 59), Schar, Burn, Targett, Shelvey, Willock, Joelinton (Murphy 59), Fraser, Saint-Maximin, Wood (Lascelles 70)

Which team has the best fixture for next week who also have a double in 33? have 2FT, planning to spend at least 1 if not both.

    Thanks.

Went with FH which has ruined the week, non-FH team would have done much better. Will WC next week or in 34.

    Morning all.

Woke up and remembered in a slightly sleep-deprived moment after trying to get the toddler to bed until midnight that I decided I should not only make an early transfer for a player that I wanted but hasn't played yet (Martinelli), but I should also transfer out Salah even though I had a simple Elyounoussi move planned for weeks. Oh well, I was thinking since Saturday of moving Salah to KDB, guess heart over head decided I'm doing it now.

I am dead ending to 33 when I will play the FH. By then, we should know the final fixtures so can plan accordingly with the WC in 34.

Yes. I want to delay the WC till I know the updated fixtures and as close to 36 as possible so I can set the BB up with the optimum 15 players.

Suggestions for what to do here? In a good spot at 12k but struggling to break into the top 10k.

    Dubravka / ramsdale
    TAA / cancelo / rudiger / white / Doherty
    Salah / raphinha / coutinho / saka / Kulusevski
    Kane / broja / wood

    2ft’s , 0.4 itv
    Fh & BB left

Was planning on coutinho to Leicester mid but with villas doubles coming up it’s making me rethink. Wood stays for their double in 33 and then goes

2FH and BB left. Plan was to FH33, BB36, FH37. Problem is FH 33 doesn't look much better than current team, and could well do worse! Anyone with similar chips left struggling to decide when to use?

I was considering BB 33 but then can't FH 36 and 37 so it's when to use the other BB.

That does look like a solid bench though! I've only got 5DGW for 33 without a hit, but then the rest are 3 pool 3 spurs who both have a decent enough fixture. Bench would be De Gea, Kulu, Toney, Broja

I don't have BB but have both FHs and yeah similar. I thought a week or so ago that I'd still make use of it but with ManUtd again looking poor and Newcastle losing their last 3 (along with news that Trippier may be out until after that week) it means I'm essentially only looking at Leicester players and even then I'm unsure. I think I'm using the second in GW37 too as I should have a fine squad for DGW36 but now I'm wondering if I'd get better usage of the first chip in a different week.

      1. antis0cial
        • 9 Years
        3 years, 11 months ago

Yeah that's the thing, I'd guess you probably have 4 or 5 Pool/Spurs who both have decent home games in 33 and then 2 Arsenal who you'd keep anyway on FH. It could easily backfire swapping them out on a FH for the likes of Newcastle/Leic/United players. Just not sure where else to use the FH

        1. Nate(U)dog(ie)
          • 5 Years
          3 years, 11 months ago

The problem with using one in GW37 too is that it locks you out of using it in both 36 and 38. I know you're already planning on BB in 36 but it still means if not using the first in 33 then it has to be 34/35.

          1. antis0cial
            • 9 Years

Yeah that's true, not an ideal situation! May have to use it 33. BB33 FH36 FH38 could work but 38 is a bit of a lottery and it should be easier to get a load of dgw 36 for bb

With No FH I'm looking at the below, so FH would be dropping good players for the lottery of dgw players
            RAMSDALE
            TIERNEY taa robbo cancelo doherty
            SAKA BARNES salah son

Yeah that looks very solid. I guess good practice is to not mess up a good team with good fixtures, think I might end up just having a deeper look at 34/35 fixtures and using it and taking a few punts there myself!

i also a FH and a BB left, with no WC to set up BB. I’m going to FH in 33 and BB in 36. The other alternative is to FH in 37 the teams expected to double do not look exciting to target. There are five teams expected to have a double in 37: Leicester, Wolves, Watford, Norwich and Everton. I would focus on having 2 or 3 Leicester players by 37 and maybe a couple of Wolves. Personally I don’t think it’s worth using a FH in 37. I’m looking to set up my 36 BB with this image. https://cdn.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/fpl-chip-strategy-for-the-season-run-in.jpeg

I wouldn’t look to get in any Man City until after the official announcement for DGWs 36 and 37 and the FA cup semi-finals. The thing is the fa cup final would slot in the weekend of GW37. If Man City beat Liverpool in the cup, their league game against West Ham would be moved into the midweek of 36 and Wolves into the midweek of 37, or vice versa. I would wait to bring in Man City but I would target teams like Leicester, Palace, Chelsea, Villa (from GW34) and possibly Everton (in GW36).

At the moment, you have 9 doublers in 36. I think the minimum number of doubles in a BB is 13. This means that DDG, Raphinha, Weghorst, Maupay, Ait Nouri and Broja are not expected to have doubles in 36.

Man U have a slight possibility to have a double against Chelsea in 36 due to possible cup postponements. However, Chelsea already have games to reschedule so that game is probably just going to rescheduled to 37 midweek. I would look to move him from GW34. Replacements could be Schmeichel or Guaita.

I would look to move Raphinha after this GW due to him playing Watford in 32. I’d hold him for now. Havertz or Maddison would be an ideal replacement. However, for money reasons you may have to downgrade to someone like Ramsey.

I’d hold Weghorst until as late as possible due to his possible doubles in 34/35. It is even possible that he doubles in 36/37. He is not needed for his 33 double now due to FHing in 33. I’d look to transfer him out in GW36.

Maupay is the one I would look to move on this week. He is not needed anymore for his double in 33 due to the use of FH in 33. There is no possibility they have another double this season, unless unexpected postponements happen due to weather or covid. I would personally look to move him on to someone like Palace’s Mateta. He looks to have nailed his place at Palace and at only 5.2, he seems a bargain.

Ait Nouri is subject to rotation with Marcal, who is playing well at the moment. Although Wolves have good fixtures I’d look to move him on, possibly even this week. Personally I’d hold him for this week and look to transfer him out for someone like Cash in GW34.

Now for Broja, of course he’s facing his parent club so he can’t play this GW. Like De Gea, he has a small possibility of doubling in 36 due to cup postponements but it would be against Liverpool. However, alongside a game against Brentford. I’d personally hold bcs of his fixtures in 34 and 35 and his trouble-less price tag. By 36, I’d look for a front line of Watkins, Richarlison/DCL and Mateta.

This squad gives you 14 doublers in 36. Weghorsr is the only non-double and you could look to move him out. I just couldn’t find an obvious replacement in the appropriate price range. This means you would be able to BB in 36.

      Ramsdale | Guaita
      Cancelo | Robbo | TAA | James | Cash
      Saka | Salah | Son | Ramsey | Kulu
      Mateta | Watkins | Weghorst

      I would take this path:

GW32: DDG, Maupay to Guaita, Mateta
      GW33 (FH)
GW34: Save (depends if Villa’s extra game against Burnley is in 34/35 or even 37. I’m taking the approach that it’s in 35)
GW35: Ait Nouri, Raphinha, Broja to Cash, Ramsey, Watkins/Ings
GW36 (BB): Save (or get Weghorst out - saving sets you up nicely for the uncertainty of GW37)

Sorry for the long read. What are your thoughts on this?

Thoughts on my current WC draft. Have ditched Salah and doubled up with TAA and Robbo for the run in. Think Salah's points will be shared with Jota, Mane, Bobby and Ruiz

    Guaita
    TAA - Robbo - Cancelo - Doherty - White
    Son - KDB - Saka - Eriksen
    Kane

    Foster - Broja - Brownhill - Gerhardt

Nice team, but this is one of the reasons I didn't want to WC before the City/Pool game. Guess all the defenders are capable of attacking returns at least.

Yeah I agree GW32 may not be high scoring but I just had to get Son, Kane & Doherty into my team asap and it sets me up for the rest of the season.

Balls on the line this week

Trent, Kulu, Jiminez >> Schar, Bruno (c), Geldhart for a hit

    Ramsdale
    Cancelo, Mee, Schar
Salah, Son, Saka, Maddison, Bruno (c)
    Laca, Weg

    Steele, Davies, Dunk, Geldhart

It's a big risk but I wish you luck. For as bad Everton are ManUtd are just too hard to predict for me to risk captaincy, hard to forget them crawling to a 1-0 win over Norwich with a late penalty. Everton also haven't conceded more than 1 at home in their last 5 (includes games against Villa, Leeds and City)

Captaincy going to be spread next week, so lower risk than usual. I'd go Kane for sure if I had him, though.

What are you guys doing with your Liverpool and City defenders next weekend?

I really can't call how that match will play out and I can play White (BHA) and Schär (WOL) instead potentially.

I'd absolutely play White next week, Brighton have been horrendous of late. I'm playing Cancelo and TAA and just not expecting clean sheets. Only real alternative is Ramsey against Spurs or Dan Burn mind!

If James and Maddison play 90 minutes during the week, there's a slight possibility they won't even start next game. Your decision time comes on Friday, so I wouldn't worry to much about it so soon.

How badly do you need differentials for you mini/cash league? Or are you playing just for OR? Going without Salah is risky and we all know that. But at the same time I totally understand why you're searching for other players in hope to climb up the ranks.

    Foster; JWP, Livramento, Jimenez*

Not a fan of having 5 player in the City v Liverpool match but don't believe it is worth to sell just yet. So how would Jimenez -> Wood/ASM sound to plan for gw33? Then WC34, BB36, FH37.
