It was easy to miss due to the deluge of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) player price reveals but the summer pre-season friendlies got underway on Saturday.

Arsenal, Crystal Palace and Wolverhampton Wanderers were among the teams in action, all entertaining Football League clubs on their training grounds.

As ever, we’ll be documenting all the goals, assists and (where available) minutes played ahead of Gameweek 1 of the 2022/23 FPL season – and the dedicated Pre-Season tab is the place to find it.

This information might be of limited use at this early stage of course but it’s more and more meaningful the closer we get to the start of the new campaign. It is, for example, how John Lundstram came to attention as an ‘out of position’ defender three years ago. Said Benrahma’s pre-season minutes and form were also noteworthy last summer ahead of his early-season burst of form.

As for the action on Saturday, Arsenal thumped Ipswich at London Colney. A strong-ish XI swept into a 4-0 lead at the interval, with Eddie Nketiah (£7.0m) bagging a hat-trick and setting up Albert Sambi Lokonga’s tap-in. An advanced Lokonga, indeed, teed up Nketiah for two of his strikes.

The academy was brought out for the second half, with Folarin Balogun finding the net at the second attempt to round off the Gunners’ scoring.

Arsenal first-half XI: Leno, Bellerin, White, Mari, Cedric, Partey, Maitland-Niles, Sambi Lokonga, Pepe, Nketiah, Nelson

Arsenal second-half XI: Okonkwo, Walters, Kirk, Awe, Sousa, Smith, Oulad M’hand, Patino, Hutchinson, Balogun, Flores

Palace’s team selection mirrored that of Arsenal’s, with several first-teamers taking to the pitch in the first half but mostly youth team players brought on at the interval.

Jean-Philippe Mateta was assisted by Odsonne Edouard for the Eagles’ opener, with the visitors drawing level after a raft of substitutions at half-time.

Palace first-half XI: Guaita, Ward, Watson, Tomkins, Mitchell, Hughes, Eze, Schlupp, Rak-Sakyi, Mateta, Edouard

Palace second-half XI: Matthews, Clyne, Quick, Phillips, D. Boateng, Riedewald, McArthur, M. Boateng (Raymond 85), Plange, Benteke, Street

No footage or game-time detail has emerged from Wolves’ 4-1 win over Forest Green but the social media account for Bruno Lage’s side revealed that Pedro Neto (£5.5m), Chem Campbell, forgotten man Adama Traore and Bruno Jordao were on the scoresheet at Compton.

    Ederson
    TAA, James, Cash, White, Jonny
Son (c), Salah, Saka, Neto (4.5m)
    Haaland (4.5m, 4.5m)

Son to Bowen (GW2), leaving MITB to jump on the early 7 to 8m mid/forward bandwagon and switch to 4-4-2/4-5-1. Overthinking ?

Having 5 x £4.5m players is too many in my opinion.

If have tripper over cash to start.

2 X 4.5 attackers means your bench is a disaster, I'd have 1 non playing bench players max.

            Allison/Ederson drop by £0.5m
Mendy gets a full £1.0m off his price tag.
            Very generous.

Just need Chelsea to actually sign a CB now though!

It's good because the masses have been gravitating to 4.5 keepers on the basis that they're best value. FPL is making us challenge this assumption going forward.

And acknowledging that it’s not fair that GKs are priced the same as DEFs.
With the modern game, DEFs have various ways to score points (and often do). Whereas GKs only have one (ignoring the unlikely event of a pen save or random assist).

I think this is ‘realigning’ the points weighting for those ‘defensive players’.

                I’m here for it.

Until we get a playing £4.0m GK.
Then I’m all about the bargain bucket!!! 🙂

I see it different. I'm looking at Lloris (hope to god he's 5.0) - played 90mins 38 games last season. Defenders will be rested, wingbacks rotated and subbed. It's the slow-but-steady security I'm happy to invest in.

I'm having a similar thought - probably Ederson (as who can tell with the rotation of Man City outfield?).

Set him, forget him, and take the guaranteed playing time and points. Don't forget, this strategy means you never have to use a transfer in goal unless there's an injury.....

Not sure why so many are disappointed with Chilwell at 6m? Only played a few games last season but such a high PPM and James at the same price (when a lot thought he'd be 7 initially).

      Both are cheap.

I personally felt the game needed cheaper strikers and more expensive defenders, but they went the opposite way.

It does feel like they're pandering to the casual player. Which makes sense tbf...

Ah OK, I must have misread the tone of the posts then, I thought people were complaining because they were hoping for cheaper to fit their squads, in that case then I'm in agreement!

I think we expected a 0.5m gap to James, surprised they are the same, I'd guess most go James now.

The defender pricing more or less cements a 4 or 5 at the back strategy.

The value there is too obvious to ignore.

Yep. They've killed the game for 50% of the teams. Feel sorry for fans of Forest, Bournemouth etc. You can't even justify a 4.5m defender from them anymore.

Newcastle should have a couple of nice assets in Trippier, Pope, ASM and Wilson. But how can I justify getting them when the likes of Mendy are £5m

Tripper and Wilson still great options assuming 5m and around 7.5m respectively. I do think the premium keepers are too expensive though, 0.5m gap between Mendy and a promoted keeper makes it a no brainer.

The more the prices come out the more of a bargain tomiyasou seems. A seemingly nailed full back (noted not a wing back) in a likely top 6 team for 4.5 is a giveaway.

Saw some stats posted earlier for ~8.0 midfielders that were pretty inaccurate. So, to set the record straight:

    Mins per goal involvement
    Saka 149
    2978 mins 11g 9a,

    Kulu 90
    1259 mins 5g 9a

    Mount 107
    2358 mins 11g 11a

    Foden 132
    2125 mins 9g 6a

    Maddison 107
    2454 mins 12g 11a

    Diaz 137
    957 mins 4g 3a

Adding Wissa to that to show what a small sample size can throw up:
    Wissa 140
    1268 mins 7g 2a
