Have Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers got a bargain on their hands with Djed Spence (£4.5m)?

Tottenham Hotspur’s sixth summer signing has joined permanently from Middlesbrough for an initial £12.5m, following a fantastic year on loan at Nottingham Forest that ended with promotion.

We assess the 21-year-old right-sided defender in our latest Scout Report.

THE HISTORY

Having previously spent time at Fulham’s academy, Spence arrived at Middlesbrough in 2018 aged 17.

SeasonTeamDivisionStarts (Sub on)GoalsAssists
2021/22Nottingham ForestChampionship41 (1)24
2021/22MiddlesbroughChampionship2 (1)00
2020/21MiddlesbroughChampionship22 (16)10
2019/20MiddlesbroughChampionship18 (4)10

It wasn’t until Jonathan Woodgate became manager that Spence was integrated into first-term action, making his league debut halfway through the 2019/20 season and immediately landed the EFL Young Player of the Month award.

Once Neil Warnock arrived to help Boro avoid relegation and stayed on for the 2020/21 campaign Spence’s game time began to suffer.

Warnock’s initial 3-5-2 wing-back system started to become a four-man defence. That, combined with the January arrival of Darnell Fisher, restricted Spence’s appearances. Between February and May 2021, he started only seven of their 19 matches, being unused a further seven times.

Therefore, when Isaiah Jones burst onto the scene at the start of last season, Warnock suddenly had two excellent young talents fighting over the same position. Having previously doubted Spence’s attitude by saying he’ll either end up at the very top or at non-league, Warnock loaned Spence to Nottingham Forest.

“For me, I’d say I try to bring excitement, skill and speed when I play… I just want to excite the fans and to play well. I think that’s the most important thing – when you excite your team and your fans and play well, it breeds confidence, and confidence is one of the biggest things in football.” – Djed Spence

Things greatly improved under Steve Cooper, the head coach that had previously won the Under-17s World Cup with England. He knows how to develop young talent and clearly saw potential in Spence.

At the City Ground, Spence started every game barring the two against parent club Middlesbrough and one on the final day of the season. Although a stand-out player during Forest’s surge up the Championship, it was the three FA Cup games versus Premier League opposition that introduced Spence to a wider audience – highlighted by a wonderful goal against Leicester City.

His attacking stats were actually quite underwhelming last season, scoring just twice in the league and assisting on four occasions.

With an expected goals (xG) tally of 1.7, the right wing-back ended on 24 shots (one every 153 minutes) and 43 chances created (CC, one every 85.6 minutes). They’re hardly compelling figures, when we look at what Spurs’ existing wing-back options were serving up in 2021/22:

Alongside this is three caps for England’s Under-21s.

PLAYING STYLE

Averaging 0.5 crosses per game didn’t rank Spence highly among Championship defenders but his dribbling did. By contributing 1.8 successful dribbles per game, he placed at joint seventh, where only Ethan Laird had a better rate from defence.

Data provided by WhoScored

And that’s part of the main package that Spence offers Spurs. He combines some very good dribbling and ball carrying with brilliant acceleration.

However, he is far from the complete package and needs to improve his first touch, decision-making and defensive positioning. If that became clear in the second tier, how quickly he can adapt to the top-flight is now the big question.

WHERE SPENCE FITS IN AT TOTTENHAM

This feeling of Spence being more of a developmental signing is backed up by Conte’s comments on the deal. Although perhaps taken out of context by the press, trying to twist it as a dig at his higher-ups, the Italian is essentially just saying that Spence is a player of potential.

“Spence is an investment of the club. The club wanted to do it. I said okay, this player is young but he showed he can become a good, important player for us. The club decided to buy him.” – Antonio Conte

Therefore don’t expect him to be a viable FPL asset for a while. As of now, Spurs have a staggering six wing-backs, with Spence, Emerson Royal (£5.0m) and Matt Doherty (£5.0m) on the right alongside Ivan Perisic (£5.5m), Sergio Reguilon (£4.5m) and Ryan Sessegnon (£4.5m) on the left.

With Reguilon and Emerson Royal expected to be sold, FPL managers may be tempted to begin the season with Doherty. The Irishman bagged 55 points from the six games that preceded his season-ending knee injury and could return to action while Spence has a bedding-in period.

IS SPENCE WORTH BUYING IN FPL?

A further complication came from recent Conte comments on midfielder Lucas Moura (£6.0m).

“I spoke with Lucas and I think that this will be a good option for me and in the past I converted Perisic in that position. [Victor] Moses was the same. [Antonio] Candreva was the same. Before a winger and then to become a wing-back. For sure he has great quality Lucas and I think this could be a good option. He can play behind the striker, on the right, on the left, as a wing-back.” – Antonio Conte on potentially using Lucas Moura at wing-back

So that’s potentially seven wing-back options for Spurs. If they struggle to offload a couple by Gameweek 1 and Perisic continues to have a light pre-season, FPL managers may reluctantly avoid their defensive assets for Southampton (H) – particularly with Conte’s track record for substituting on and off his wing-backs.

It would be a shame because the great run of early fixtures also offers strong clean sheet potential against Wolverhampton Wanderers (H), Nottingham Forest (a) and Fulham (H).

With Spence evidently being a signing for the future, it’s a ‘don’t buy just yet’ situation. Should he eventually establish himself as the starting right wing-back in a side that is very capable of recording shut-outs, however, he will make a mockery of his initial £4.5m price tag.

Don't really like that planner. It didn't have Ronaldo for a while and got a bit buggy.

      Ended up using FPL.team

I also am constantly looking at my team anyway so I knew roughly what the plan was every week.

        Would rather get Ederson.

Worryingly, latest reports say Dias's unwell - and Laporte unfit and may miss start of the season. You'd think Dias would recover, but will he be match-fit enough?

Ederson doesn't suddenly become an option if you get rid of Cancelo though. If anything, he becomes slightly worse. Yeah, you might have a City spot open up in your team (unlikely, since most people only have 0-2 City players). But he's competing with other FPL GKs for a spot in your team, not with FPL defenders.

It's not for me - my draft has Cancelo and KDB only, but I support the pov that Ederson is a better asset than Laporte, Dias, Walker etc. Also people wanting to swerve the 7-8m midfield minefield and want City security going down that route.
Re other keepers - Alisson is the best but blocks 3 locked Pool assets. Ederson will keep over 50% cs which puts him far ahead of the rest in terms of raw points. If you think you can pick value in your outfield squad and have the money to do it, I'd say Ederson is fine.

Starting 'puntier' as you put it could be a really good idea. Very high ownerships of particular players (Haaland, Salah, James, Trent, Perisic, Jesus etc etc) makes some options good differentials.

However, I hate to say it but I think this team is quite weak.

      Players I like:
      Meslier
      Trent Trippier Neco
      KDB Son Martinelli

      Players I maybe like:

Before the Nunez lovers start saying how he's the best striker, he's better than Haaland etc etc can I just summarise his four goals against Leipzig:

    Goal 1 - the Penalty
--> Nunez just managed to score, the keeper went the right way and was just unable to keep it out.

    Goal 2 -
--> good finish tbf, capitalises on very poor defending, appears to be offside to the naked eye but maybe he wasn't.

Goal 3 - the near miss that went in
--> Nunez was literally a few yards out, has it passed perfectly right to him and he flings out his leg, it trickles towards the post and then bounces in.

Goal 4 - the one the keeper should have saved
--> Nunez hits a weak shot which somehow slips under the goalkeeper.

Wait until he's playing against proper premier league teams...

Haaland hasn't played for City yet so you can't say he's scored 4 more goals than Haaland really can you?

Nunez has played 2/3 games and got 4 goals, Haaland has played 0 games and got 0 goals!?

Do you not think Salah or Diaz will get more G/A?

              9.0 isn't a no brainer

I'm joking re: Haaland but the reason he hasn't played is injuries, which were an issue for him last year and should be a concern for a player at that price point, who is also new to the league.

Salah is my one premium so yeah, I think he'll get more G/A than Nunez. Don't think Diaz will though, good player but lacks end product.

Have to be there to score it, he's good at that. Not exactly a convincing finisher much of the time but I'm sure that'll improve, but if he gets into those spaces that regularly he'll pick up goals either way

The single most important factor for an attacker for fpl purposes is getting chances, not how talented or good a footballer is. As long as he keeps getting those chances throughout the season, he’d be a great asset.

A player who scores 3 out of 10 chances is better than a player who scores 2 out of 2.

Thanks Karen, this was more of a non FPL discussion

Personally the price point for Nunez makes him unappealing to me.

I plan to go double or triple Liverpool.
Trent is nailed on as place 1, Salah will likely be place 2. If I don't go for Salah I'd rather have Diaz and/or Robbo

  11. Deulofail

When did premium defenders stop being considered premium FPL players?

The common understanding of the game doesn't seem to take the positions into account.

PSA: Diaz can be a better pick than Robbo even if Robbo gets more points. E.g. Trippier & Diaz could outscore Robbo & Martinelli. In which case, your premium (Robbo) would not be worth the investment

But maybe just stop using the word premium, altogether

[CHORUS] "But maybe just stop using the word premium!"

It's a valid argument, but I think premium tends to be shorthand for 'players you'd captain' - and we don't captain defenders.

By 'we' I mean players trying to succeed. The Top 10K, Top 100K virtually never cap a defender.

So am I not trying to succeed?

In my first full season last year I achieved top 420k rank which is in the top 4.5% of FPL players. I beat my ML rival who has been playing it for 5 years by around 200 points.

(I've played bits and bobs in previous years but never could be bothered to see it out until I got really into it last year)

I'm not trying to show off because you can't really show off with a rank of c.420k but I'm not not taking this seriously.

Could you please advise why captaining a defender is a bad decision? Especially with a player like Trent Vs Fulham in GW1 he is likely to get a CS and an attacking return!? Say he plays the 90, with a CS and Assist then he gets 11 points before any BP so when captained that would be 22 points.

Anecdotal evidence doesn't trump hard statistical evidence. Articles on here have shown those successful managers captain defenders significantly under 1% of times. Of course there are always the odd exception.

< 1% doesn't mean never. Some great players could be captaining a defender 5 times in a season, while most are never captaining defenders. Besides, this says nothing about people 'trying to succeed'. Using top Xk averages to make blanket rules for yourself is not the sign of a great FPL manager imo

Yes, and top prices take into account frequent captaincy. That means either over 10m assets or including 10m assets. That's why for me Sterling and BrunoF fall into a nasty price point - not captainable over Salah/Haaland/Kane/Son/KDB, but too expensive not to captain frequently.

A, mostly because Diaz is significantly more exciting than Mount. Also because Liverpool outfield slots are more precious.

      What City defensive news?

        Laporte unfit and Dias ill.

Laporte yes, but Dias is only I'll he will be fine by GW1.

Anyway that leaves Stones, Ake and Phillips to play CB as well as promising academy player Mbete.

That would be fine against most attacks, but Bowen is dangerous. Not enough for me to change my plans, but I can see the concern.

              Fair enough

tbh as a city fan I think Ake and stones together would be a weak pairing.

Stones and Laporte or Dias and Ake would be fine but then two together maybe a recipe for disaster!

Agreed. Also, now that I'm less sure about starting with Haaland, if I don't go for KDB instead then I think Bowen could fill in as GW2 captain

Would love to have him, but GW1 fixture is just too much of a put-off with other players with good fixtures. Could bring him GW2, but it seems like weak use of a FT for 3 good fixtures, or 2 if you bring him in GW3.

        Perfect.

I'd just maybe change him for him and then him for him but apart from that I quite like it.

Mind if I steal a few ideas?

      With current squad:

      Henderson
Williams Worrall Niakhate McKenna Toffolo (only until Richards is fit)
O'Brien Colback (only until Yates is fit)
      Lingard
      Johnson Awoniyi

If we get Cornet/Dennis/another battling CM then this will obvs change. Back five is pretty settled though

Genuinely feeling this "threemium" draft. Downside would be two 4.5m forwards and no 8m mid, this could be fixed with 2 FT though. What you all think?

    Meslier
    TAA Cancelo Chillwell Zinchenko Dalot
    Salah KDB Martinelli Neto
    Kane

    4 4.5 4.5 4.5

Looks good. Could potentially downgrade Zinchenko to 4.5 Chillwell to 5.5/5 then upgrade 4.5 forward to Undav or someone

That's the only thing, you have one active sub so if Martinelli/Dalot/Chilwell/Neto miss a game you may he down to ten men. Team looks great apart from that.

Brighton asking for £50m according to the Guardian.

        City fan

Yes, City bid £30 million for Cucerella.
Brighton want £50 million so we are £20 million apart in valuation. We have said we will walk away unless they reduce their asking price. I have seen reports that Brighton are after a LB on loan from another PL club (I can't remember off the top of my head who). This would maybe indicate they are accepting the fact Cucu is leaving

City haven't looked for anyone else. He's who they want. 50m is not unreasonable - they'll agree a figure close to that soon enough.

Ready to go - possibly ...

    Meslier / Klaesson
    Robertson / Dias / Trippier / White / Williams
    Salah / Mount / Kulusevski / Coutinho / Andreas
    Haaland / Jesus / Greenwood

Been stable for about 10 days - last change was Laporte to Dias (much of a muchness to be honest)
    Doubts?
Coutinho to Sancho might be a punt - maybe wait and see on that one
White to Zinchenko - Will Zinchenko get regular starts. White may be safer at the start.
0.5 in the bank, so Greenwood (4.5) most likely fodder option (but probably only get about 8 minutes across the entire season)

What do you think, good people?

    Raya
    Robbo, cucurella, james, chilwell, tomi
    mahrez, KDB, Sterling, diaz
    Haaland

    4,0, andreas, greenwood, taylor

Lack of Salah, Robbo instead of Trent and no Spurs, but looks pretty good! 🙂

Arsenal fan here and Tomiyasu isn't going to be fit for start of the season. No Salah& TAA could kill you based on ownership. Rest is good.

Yes, needs much more value in midfield and less in attack.

    2. Brimble82

It is, but I also think it looks pretty fun!
If you drop Bailey down to a £4.5m you can even make Neto a £6.5m which opens the door to Rashford (if CR7 leaves) r ASM (if you fancy a NEW punt).

It's obvs very light in midfield, but it also could be a great aggressive start to the season (which I think we can allow because of the 'extra WC')

But maybe A now, Neto has performed in preseason and Chelsea have signed a CB so Mendy is more appealing

Okay, in this one for few days. Have to keep an eye on Chelsea defence, Haaland and Ronaldo situations though...

    Rashford, Sancho
    Kane (C), Haaland, Jesus

Wow. Not seen many 5-2-3 formations yet.

      Assuming your bench is fodder?

      Alison --> cheaper GK imo
Koulibaly --> someone else, really not keen for 5.5 on a CB like him
      Robbo --> Cancelo

Front 3 is faultless but really not sure with the midfield, all the 8.0 options ignored and no Salah/KDB/Son.
