Have Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers got a bargain on their hands with Djed Spence (£4.5m)?

Tottenham Hotspur’s sixth summer signing has joined permanently from Middlesbrough for an initial £12.5m, following a fantastic year on loan at Nottingham Forest that ended with promotion.

We assess the 21-year-old right-sided defender in our latest Scout Report.

THE HISTORY

Having previously spent time at Fulham’s academy, Spence arrived at Middlesbrough in 2018 aged 17.

SeasonTeamDivisionStarts (Sub on)GoalsAssists
2021/22Nottingham ForestChampionship41 (1)24
2021/22MiddlesbroughChampionship2 (1)00
2020/21MiddlesbroughChampionship22 (16)10
2019/20MiddlesbroughChampionship18 (4)10

It wasn’t until Jonathan Woodgate became manager that Spence was integrated into first-term action, making his league debut halfway through the 2019/20 season and immediately landed the EFL Young Player of the Month award.

Once Neil Warnock arrived to help Boro avoid relegation and stayed on for the 2020/21 campaign Spence’s game time began to suffer.

Warnock’s initial 3-5-2 wing-back system started to become a four-man defence. That, combined with the January arrival of Darnell Fisher, restricted Spence’s appearances. Between February and May 2021, he started only seven of their 19 matches, being unused a further seven times.

Therefore, when Isaiah Jones burst onto the scene at the start of last season, Warnock suddenly had two excellent young talents fighting over the same position. Having previously doubted Spence’s attitude by saying he’ll either end up at the very top or at non-league, Warnock loaned Spence to Nottingham Forest.

“For me, I’d say I try to bring excitement, skill and speed when I play… I just want to excite the fans and to play well. I think that’s the most important thing – when you excite your team and your fans and play well, it breeds confidence, and confidence is one of the biggest things in football.” – Djed Spence

Things greatly improved under Steve Cooper, the head coach that had previously won the Under-17s World Cup with England. He knows how to develop young talent and clearly saw potential in Spence.

At the City Ground, Spence started every game barring the two against parent club Middlesbrough and one on the final day of the season. Although a stand-out player during Forest’s surge up the Championship, it was the three FA Cup games versus Premier League opposition that introduced Spence to a wider audience – highlighted by a wonderful goal against Leicester City.

His attacking stats were actually quite underwhelming last season, scoring just twice in the league and assisting on four occasions.

With an expected goals (xG) tally of 1.7, the right wing-back ended on 24 shots (one every 153 minutes) and 43 chances created (CC, one every 85.6 minutes). They’re hardly compelling figures, when we look at what Spurs’ existing wing-back options were serving up in 2021/22:

Alongside this is three caps for England’s Under-21s.

PLAYING STYLE

Averaging 0.5 crosses per game didn’t rank Spence highly among Championship defenders but his dribbling did. By contributing 1.8 successful dribbles per game, he placed at joint seventh, where only Ethan Laird had a better rate from defence.

Data provided by WhoScored

And that’s part of the main package that Spence offers Spurs. He combines some very good dribbling and ball carrying with brilliant acceleration.

However, he is far from the complete package and needs to improve his first touch, decision-making and defensive positioning. If that became clear in the second tier, how quickly he can adapt to the top-flight is now the big question.

WHERE SPENCE FITS IN AT TOTTENHAM

This feeling of Spence being more of a developmental signing is backed up by Conte’s comments on the deal. Although perhaps taken out of context by the press, trying to twist it as a dig at his higher-ups, the Italian is essentially just saying that Spence is a player of potential.

“Spence is an investment of the club. The club wanted to do it. I said okay, this player is young but he showed he can become a good, important player for us. The club decided to buy him.” – Antonio Conte

Therefore don’t expect him to be a viable FPL asset for a while. As of now, Spurs have a staggering six wing-backs, with Spence, Emerson Royal (£5.0m) and Matt Doherty (£5.0m) on the right alongside Ivan Perisic (£5.5m), Sergio Reguilon (£4.5m) and Ryan Sessegnon (£4.5m) on the left.

With Reguilon and Emerson Royal expected to be sold, FPL managers may be tempted to begin the season with Doherty. The Irishman bagged 55 points from the six games that preceded his season-ending knee injury and could return to action while Spence has a bedding-in period.

IS SPENCE WORTH BUYING IN FPL?

A further complication came from recent Conte comments on midfielder Lucas Moura (£6.0m).

“I spoke with Lucas and I think that this will be a good option for me and in the past I converted Perisic in that position. [Victor] Moses was the same. [Antonio] Candreva was the same. Before a winger and then to become a wing-back. For sure he has great quality Lucas and I think this could be a good option. He can play behind the striker, on the right, on the left, as a wing-back.” – Antonio Conte on potentially using Lucas Moura at wing-back

So that’s potentially seven wing-back options for Spurs. If they struggle to offload a couple by Gameweek 1 and Perisic continues to have a light pre-season, FPL managers may reluctantly avoid their defensive assets for Southampton (H) – particularly with Conte’s track record for substituting on and off his wing-backs.

It would be a shame because the great run of early fixtures also offers strong clean sheet potential against Wolverhampton Wanderers (H), Nottingham Forest (a) and Fulham (H).

With Spence evidently being a signing for the future, it’s a ‘don’t buy just yet’ situation. Should he eventually establish himself as the starting right wing-back in a side that is very capable of recording shut-outs, however, he will make a mockery of his initial £4.5m price tag.

I currently don't own Salah, KDB, Kane, Mahrez, Martinelli, Neto...

But the players I'm most sad about not owning are Haaland, Robertson, Nketiah and Neco Williams 🙁

Actually, you may have a point. Perhaps my priority is to enjoy myself.

On the other hand, going against the grain and getting lucky puts you in a great position to try and win the thing. So it's a 2-for-1 deal. 😀

No offence, you aren’t winning a thing when you’re omitting players like that. I do get the enjoyment part - I am very similar to you with that ethos.

No offence, but you can't have them all, and you will have omitted some of these players, and I have my own reservations about many of them to justify my decisions so far, and apparently my current team is actually pretty good:

There’s not having them all, and there’s just being differential for the sake of it. You’re in denial. If I see you cry on this forum come GW1 when Salah and Haaland have battered your rank I’ll find it funny. I am sure you’ll have plenty of justifications for an early wildcard 🙂

I'm not 'being differential for the sake of it'. What happens when Salah batters your rank?

                Haaland Darwin Jesus

                Begovic Andreas Neco Ebiowei

Surely it's not a crazy idea to omit Salah if you are considering it.

This literally doesn’t mean anything. It’s just a hypothetical draft that isn’t my go-to draft…

You go from one extreme to the next and pass it off as the best approach. You had Nketiah and ESR not long ago.

All I am saying is I think you need to be a little more honest with yourself in terms of accepting that you chose players based on ownership that will hopefully help you enjoy the game more. I get more kicks out of the game this way than having a template team, I get it.

Huh? When do I pass anything off as the best approach? There are clearly many good combinations of players. Making an argument for Nketiah isn't going from one extreme to another; it's just considering a new option. I still think Nketiah is a good and interesting option, as you can see in my post above. And ESR is off the radar temporarily due to injury. Maybe you could be a little more honest haha

Right, you also omitted Salah, KDB, Kane, Mahrez, Martinelli, Robertson and Nketiah. Don't downplay it. Seems like being differential for the sake of it

Or is it more like a new combination of players that is perfectly valid? That would be my view.

I omitted them to show how difficult it was to get a balanced team with Darwin. It’s called a “Darwin Draft”, not my own draft I’m currently on.

YOUR team is good. I know that’s all you want people to say. Genuinely it is. However, it’s not great because you’re omitting really good players, amazing players in fact who will be popular captaincy choices.

Your combination is good. I’d like to think you post on this site to gather opinions. I’m of the opinion you’re going a tad too differential. Nothing worse than omitting genuine captaincy options for the best teams. That’s all.

Well you could have phrased it like this earlier, rather than telling me I'm dishonest, in denial, picking players based on low ownership (not true), going from one extreme to the next and passing it off as the best approach, etc. But I appreciate the repair job here. Hope you have a good season. I'm off now 🙂

You are 100% in denial, or alternatively you’re happy to have lower ranks because the highs of differential wins are greater. For me, I am the latter BUT that doesn’t mean I shouldn’t accept my team isn’t the best. That’s the key difference.

Zinchenko is very underrated, admittedly 30m is more than I thought we get but I think it's a fair price really.

Cucurella is worth more than 30m, I'll be honest, but I think a deal of around 40m would be fair.

A net loss of 10m for a good LB isn't too bad

Rashford or Sancho? Prob been asked a million times.

Can't ignore Rashfords 174/177 pts in 19/20 20/21. For 6.5M that is good value.

Sancho dortmund number are great but still nothing solid in PL.

Sancho's having the better pre-season but 1m is quite a difference.

Not convinced by Forrest's defence. They play two strikers.

In the words of Eddie Howe:
"I think a lot of the problems with two strikers, and why I wouldn’t say gone out of the game, but probably going out of the game, is because off the ball, you have big spaces.

"Your midfield and back four find themselves with huge spaces to defend. It’s not something I’d say that I’d never do, but it’s certainly not something that’s in my immediate plans to play that way."

Plus, they've just completed their 11th signing!
Historically, that amount of change in a promoted club doesn't tend to play out all that well.

I'm a wait and see on Forest.

Although we play 2 strikers we also have 3 centre backs and 2 very good wing backs. Add in a colback/Yates and they offer protection to the defence. Niakhate is a very good signing in defence which was the best in the league after cooper took over.

      3. JIMMY TUGGINS

They weren't playing a back four though so that quote is completely irrelevant.

    Pretty settled on my team, only two minor issues which i may change are;

Diaz or Mahrez (currenlt have both Salah and Diaz but no City attaching cover until GW2 when Kane becomes Haaland

    and

Rashford or Bruno G - Currenly have Rashford which feels a bit wrong and tempted to go Bruno G instead which frees up 0.5

    Any advice/thoughts would be appriciated

If you believe in the power of cover, maybe back your logic and get Mahrez instead of Diaz. I have no idea how cover is supposed to work, personally, so I'm probably missing out on a trick.

I'm keen. I really think he'll do well. Fulham scored an absolute ton of goals last season. If Toney was a revelation for Brentford on his way up, Mitro did even better. We all piled on Toney last year so why not Mitro?

Mitro also started off even his 'bad season' well. We all bought him up after he scored a brace in GW2 vs Everton. I remember because for some reason I didn't have him while he was like 30% owned.

Also... do you really think 'most people are perma-capped Salah' still?
In that, are you saying 'most people' are your classic 'Top-10k' types, or the whole 3 million managers?

Just interested to see your take on it, because I'm not so sure it's that cut and dry.

            1. 15men1cup

The reason why a lot of people are going with Salah is for the captain....250 points a year is around 6.6 points a game. He is the safe bet. For me to go without Kane and Haaland to start frees up 7m, that turns a 13,8,6,5.5,4.5 toa 13,8,8,8,8 - that's top plays on set pieces, there are points there and some "could" ever out score Kane and Haaland...

when Haaland starts firing I will get him with a WC...but remember last year, everyone was talking about Werner....how did that turn out? let him settle, I have it covered.

The top 10k managers are good at working out points per million, value, some I am sure always cap Salah

I think front 3 first choice will be Diaz / Nunez / Salah, and all 3 will score well if Liverpool have a good season.

Any thoughts on this? Still havent had Salah inb a single draft, think im set on keeping it that way.

    Ederson (4.0)
Trent - Chilwell - Perisic (Tomi, Williams)
Diaz - Mount - Foden - Martinelli (Andreas)
    Jesus - Haaland - Nunez

Ederson / Trent / Chilwell could well change to Mendy / Robbo / Cancelo for the same price and defensive coverage.

To me that seems like a crash and burn draft because it's too optimistic.

The entire strikeforce have their first season at a new club, Martinelli and Foden are minutes risk. Perisic same problem.

    Sanchez
    Trent // Cancelo // Zinc // James

The usual suspects on the bench.

Thoughts on going 1 striker and deploying funds elsewhere?

I generally find there’s better value to be found in Midfield and Defence as the points system favours these two positions over strikers.
Plus plenty of the midfielders could easily be classed as Strikers - Rashford, Neto, Salah even …

I’ve generally always gone 1 up top with two bench fillers (£4.5m), leaving circa £80m for the rest of the squad. I’ve no issue with having 2 subs that never play, use the transfer wisely for any injuries/suspensions and have a team of ‘banker’ starters. You get no points for the bench (except with the chip)

Not totally against the 1 premium, 2 fodder striker option... only downside for me is the lack of flexibility when your premium striker is rested or has a poor fixture, i.e. City/Liv away.
If both your 4.5 strikers aren't even making the pitch to pick up 1 or 2 points and you find yourself having only 10 players for the odd GW here and there - it can get pretty infuriating.

The only player I can see that you could get away with that for is Kane... fixture proof and never rested (unless injured). Every other striker on the list I envisage having their minutes managed this season with the crazy schedule.

All the Diaz love is bizarre. Exciting player to watch but he's not raking in enough assists or goals to make him good value at 8.0 when you have the likes of Maddison, Saka, Mount, Bowen in a similar brackets. I get that those picks are more boring but they are backed up by numbers.
