Two more pre-season friendlies took place on Wednesday and we’ve got all the goal, assist and line-up information as well as the key Fantasy Premier League (FPL) talking points in this latest Scout Notes article.

We’re also keeping tabs on the minutes played in all of these warm-up fixtures, with Premium Members of Fantasy Football Scout able to access this information at the bottom of this article.

RB SALZBURG 1-0 LIVERPOOL

Match highlights

Jurgen Klopp named a mostly second-string Liverpool side for Wednesday’s defeat to RB Salzburg, with Darwin Nunez (£9.0m) in the line-up.

Whether that means anything for the Uruguayan’s Gameweek 1 starting prospects remains to be seen, as Jurgen Klopp had also initially selected Roberto Firmino (£8.0m) alongside Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) and Luis Diaz (£8.0m) in last week’s thrashing of RB Leipzig – a match that Darwin scored four goals in as a substitute.

Two more Reds matches are to come before we reach Gameweek 1, starting with the Community Shield on Saturday, so we’ll have more selection information to go off by the time next Friday comes around.

Darwin and the rest of his teammates drew a blank in Austria, although the new signing struck the bar and had another big chance blocked by a last-gasp tackle. The positive takeaway is that the openings kept coming, as they did in his previous pre-season appearances, even if Klopp was unhappy at the support his new striker was receiving.

“We set the boys up and it’s all fine, they can do much better and they had good moments as well. But especially the first half, the majority of players have to get used to what we do. Darwin was much too often alone. Everybody dropped, everybody was involved in the build-up but too wide and we could only pass the ball to Darwin in the box. He had his moments and nearly scored, but he needs much more support around him. You keep other players busy that they cannot focus on him. So many things.

“Second half, imagine now Darwin would have been there in the box, that would have helped as well. It is like it is – doesn’t feel great, but we take it and go from here.” – Jurgen Klopp

Most of the big guns entered the fray on the hour-mark, with the team that ended the match probably the one we will see against Manchester City this weekend.

Liverpool’s threat predictably ratcheted up a notch after the first-team regulars were introduced, with Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.5m), Firmino, Salah and Diaz all forcing saves as the pressure mounted.

There was still no Alisson (£5.5m), who hasn’t featured since the defeat to Manchester United earlier this month, although Klopp did say he was “close” ahead of the Salzburg match:

“Obviously Diogo [Jota] is not here, that’s clear, but from the boys who are injured but are here, Ali is the closest – definitely not for Salzburg but then we will see. He is close to get back I think.” – Jurgen Klopp

Liverpool XI: Adrian, Mabaya (Alexander-Arnold 60), Konate (Matip 60), Gomez (Van Dijk 60), Milner (Robertson 46), Bajcetic (Fabinho 60), Keita (Morton 46, Henderson 60), Jones (Thiago 60), Elliott (Salah 60), Carvalho (Diaz 60), Nunez (Firmino 46)

SOUTHAMPTON 3-1 MONACO

  • Goals: A Armstrong, S Armstrong, Ward-Prowse
  • Assists: Elyounoussi, Aribo, Walker-Peters

Match highlights

No matter what the official Southampton website might try and tell you about their side’s starting formation, Ralph Hasenhuttl persisted with his pre-season 3-5-2 experiment in Wednesday’s win over Monaco and finally saw his side emerge as victors.

“It was a good test for us and we tried to play football, we tried to press high with this shape and there were some interesting performances from some players, I must say. We can see that the goals are there and that’s what we wanted. The young players are pushing and the older, more experienced players are stepping up.

“Especially after the first games that haven’t been so good, I must say, trying to find the way with this formation and shape, it is getting better and better.” – Ralph Hasenhuttl

The game also marked the return to action of Romain Perraud (£4.5m) and Nathan Redmond (£5.5m), both making their first appearances of pre-season as wing-backs, while the recently returned James Ward-Prowse (£6.5m) built up his own fitness with a second-half cameo and trademark strike from distance.

Ward-Prowse is certainly one potential beneficiary of this formation change: already such a threat from set plays and penalty kicks, the midfielder will be allowed a little more freedom to get forward in open play as an ‘eight’ rather than a ‘six’ of the old system – something underscored by his goal on Wednesday.

Adam Armstrong (£5.5m) prodded in from close range to equalise after Saints had conceded the opening goal, with FPL midfielders Joe Aribo (£5.5m) and Stuart Armstrong (£5.0m) later being deployed ‘out of position’ up top – not for the first time this season in either case – and combining for the hosts’ second strike.

“As a striker, he has more freedom for what he can do. He was driving with the ball. It’s not so dangerous when he loses it because you have enough players to defend. I like this position for him.” – Ralph Hasenhuttl on Stuart Armstrong, July 23

New striker Sekou Mara (£5.5m) will make his debut this weekend against Villarreal and will soon provide more orthodox competition to Adam Armstrong and Che Adams (£6.5m) in attack.

Southampton XI (3-5-2): McCarthy; Valery (Bednarek 89), Lyanco (Bella-Kotchap 77), Stephens; Perraud (Djenepo, 46); Diallo, Romeu, Elyounoussi (Aribo 65), Redmond (S. Armstrong 70); Adams (Ward-Prowse 65), A. Armstrong (Walker-Peters 65)

Whats with Bruno G? He was sensational last year, but is he going to be getting forward for Newcastle in the same manner? I haven't seen him scoring goals in the preseason.

That's the big question. And with Shelvey out, will he be required to play deeper? With these doubts, plus GWs 3 and 5, he's on my watchlist for now.

Preseason is an illusion. I think he's still a great option. Expecting Newcastle to step up this season.

So do I - so I've got Trippier in my team - but perhaps its better to start with Martinelli especially with Arsenal's fixtures and then jump on Bruno G when we know more.

Just think there are better options on paper - more attacking ones - at his price e.g. Martinelli or Rashford. Not saying they'll be better on grass and the former might not even be first choice, but as of now Bruno G is a hard sell.

Yes I have Martinelli in my team for exactly this reason. Rashford I'm less sure about. I'm not sure on ManU at all.

Me neither, I am not going near United I don't think - however I'd still favour Rash over Bruno G for now if I had a gun to my head!

3 goals in 80 odd games for Lyon says last season was an absolute fluke at Newcastle.

He did score a couple of beauties for Newcastle but I’m not falling into that trap

Bruno G isn't priced like a defensive mid, he's priced like a box to box / #10, so either FPL towers screwed up and he becomes a non-asset or he kicks on from last season. You may well be right and so I think the general consensus is to steer clear until we know more. But I don't think his performance last year was a fluke because he wasn't a defensive midfielder.

Not sure where all the doubt has come from, i understand his record at lyon wasnt great but he was great at newcastle last season and has been decent in pre season, no reason he cant kick on although obviously he wont maintain last seasons goals but he should still be decent at 6m

I'm still on Mendy + 4.0. I think his quality, their fixtures and the fact it's Chelsea make that the best pick.

The other option I'd consider is 2x 4.5 so that I can minimise tough fixtures.

              How’s this Draft?

              Meslier
              Trent Robertson Cancelo Zinch (Neco)
              Salah BrunoG Grealish Rashford (Andreas)
              Jesus Kane (Archer)

Any thoughts, tempted to start with Grealish but not 100% could be a decent punt at 7m..

Second draft. Going without Salah. 0.5 ITB. Think it's pretty solid side.

              Ramsdale
TAA - Robbo - Cancelo - Walker (for now)
              Son - Diaz - Martinelli - Neto
              Kane - Jesus

              Subs: 4.0 - Greenwood - Neco - Andreas

Walker's out if City buy a new fullback. Might go with Ederson/4.5 in that case. Early plan is to move either Son or Kane to KDB or Haaland after GW or few.

Triple Pool defence if not going with Salah or an anyone from an unknown Pool attack without their Mane man.

£20M cost with Allisson, TAA and Robbo

Would have bought you 570pts last year. Set and forget.
Fixture proof really, but top of ticker for defence for first 7 games.

Was the King. I think he's lost a quarter yard of pace like a lot of 30 year olds with lots of minutes do, and the Pool attack will be far less dynamic without Mane. His second half of the season last year was underwhelming for him. Watch him bite me in the balls now though 🙂

Feel Diaz has 'been found out' a little. Cuts onto his right and bang most times.
Yet to see him do anything with his left foot. Feel teams began to suss that out in the latter season.
Robbo will benefit from space as defenders tuck in.

Maybe I am overanalysing it a little though 🙂

Just think Diaz will hit 170pts with rotation, etc (5 subs) but your are paying 8M

Alisson could hit 160-170pts but you are paying 5.5M

Seems a good side buddy. I'm too light on City assets tbh. 6 from the big two is wise. Just like Kane and that means no KDB.

Bang on re: Diaz. He was poor vs RB Leipzig for precisely the reasons you cite - he was consistently dispossessed going to his right off the wing. Too slow to react after receiving the ball, allowing the defender to close.

Nunez was excellent - always in space, good with the ball at his feet, always dangerous. He's the second Pool attacker to own.

I saw a complilation of Nunez in his last game showing poor first touches etc..This was the game after the Leipzig match. What I really saw was a player consistently getting into dangerous positions and possibly lacking a slight bit of composure, but his movement into space was excellent as you say. Once he settles he will be a machine I think. Agree with you. I'm leaving the option open for GW3 as feel he might need a few games to get up to speed.

Keeping 2M in reserve to reavulate after first 2 GW's. Happy with squad for first 2 GW's.

Planning on 3 transfers in GW3 to put all money in and settle with a bit more info on form etc.

Won't be replacing Kane unless form is brutal. Nunez is defo on my watchlist! 🙂

2.0M in the bank - interesting.

Just thinking about Haaland... there seems to be a plan among many to bring him in for Kane in GW2 to captain versus Bournemouth.

Haven't we seen this before, where WE see a blowout match but don't credit that Pep ALSO sees the same blowout coming and consequently plays his "second" team, knowing that a runout for these guys and a rest for the big hitters is more important than a 6-nil versus 3-nil result? If Pep is going to ease Haaland into the rigors of the PL, wouldn't this be a perfect game to hold him back? I know I've been burned a time or two by this scenario.

                            Now who's overanalyzing things...

Best GK + 3 defenders(all need to start) for 20m excluding Liverpool assets.

              Who do you suggest

How many total points can Ramsdale & Pope get this season?

I'm sure it's already been mentioned, but Everton buying Dwight McNeil for £20m...

Astounding how many stupid decisions one football club can continue to make. And I'm a Sunderland supporter.

Not going to be a popular opinion but I think that’s the best bit of business they’ve done in a while (the bar’s pretty low). Still think it’s too little too late for them and they’ll be going down though.

Used to think he looked quite a tidy player, but his goal and assist stats are quite frankly abysmal (even taking into account he plays for Burnley).

He might get them 1 assist this season

Yes for all 38 games. 159pts for 6.5M is great value. Has delivered for last two seasons. Set pieces make him fixture proof imho. Can bang a 25 yard free kick in against anyone.

                Set and forget for me.

Right last one before I actually do some work today 😛

              Dias or Chilwell?

I feel like this is the ultimate risk vs reward pick. It is worth noting that I already have both Cancelo and James in my defence already.

Chilwell by far for me when he’s ready but he’s not so I guess Dias by default

City look good for cleans in the first 5, a double up is smart imo

The lure of jack tho is too much for me, and i dont want to be inflexible in grabbing haaland

I am just ramping up content and putting a team together. Anyone have any strong views to the debate of Saka vs Jesus?

Just ownership really. Jesus seems a must have if he hits the ground running. 65% ownership. Less risky.
