We’re profiling all 20 Premier League clubs before Gameweek 1 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) gets underway.

From our top picks from each team to a predicted line-up for the opening weekend, we’ll be covering each top-flight side in detail.

Everton are up next, with the focus here on the Frank Lampard era that started in Gameweek 24 of 2021/22.

Data in this article comes from our Premium Members Area, which you can access with a discounted subscription for as little as £2.49 a month today.

It was a bit of a miserable picture from an attacking perspective after Lampard’s appointment, with only the three relegated clubs scoring at an inferior rate to the Toffees (1.06 per game).

They were bottom-five material for everything from shots to xG, too.

Using our Team Comparison tool to assess Everton before and after Lampard’s appointment, we can see that there was even a downward turn in the underlying numbers from Gameweek 24 onwards:

Above: Everton’s underlying attacking numbers from Gameweeks 1-23 (left) and Gameweeks 24-38 (right). Most figures given are per game.

Lampard could even call upon Richarlison (£8.5m) and an admittedly rusty-looking Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£8.0m) for much of his tenure, with the former now packed off to Tottenham Hotspur.

LAST SEASON: DEFENCE

GAMEWEEK 24 ONWARDS
TotalRank v other Premier League clubs*
Goals conceded3116th
Clean sheets510th
Shots conceded25914th
Shots in the box conceded16713th
Shots on target conceded9718th
Big chances conceded4015th
Expected goals conceded (xGC)30.4814th

*Rankings are weighted per game due to the different number of matches that clubs played from Gameweek 24 onwards

The clean sheet count was fairly healthy following Lampard’s appointment, with five shut-outs being banked in 18 matches.

The rest of the underlying defensive data was less impressive as Jordan Pickford (£4.5m) was kept busy, making more saves per 90 minutes (3.76) than all bar two other first-choice goalkeepers.

A comparison of the numbers pre and post-managerial change reveals something of a mixed bag, with big chance concession and xGC not really altering to a significant level:

Above: Everton’s underlying defensive numbers from Gameweeks 1-23 (left) and Gameweeks 24-38 (right). Most figures given are per game.

James Tarkowski (£4.5m) has been brought in over the summer to bolster the backline, with an improvement at defending free-kicks and corners surely a priority: only Leicester had a worse xGC from set plays last season, something that was the case both before and after Lampard’s appointment.

OPENING FIXTURES

The best budget FPL midfielders for 2022/23 2

A motley collection of opening games sees Everton rank lower-mid-table for fixture difficulty in Gameweeks 1-8, which will be enough to deter many FPL managers from considering the Toffees as viable options.

The concern would be a continuation of their abysmal away form of last season, as most of their early ‘winnable’ matches come on the road.

European qualifiers Chelsea, Liverpool and West Ham all visit Goodison Park between now and the international break. That trio of clubs plus Arsenal were among the division’s seven highest-scoring teams in 2021/22, so multiple clean sheet opportunities don’t leap off the page.

Kinda hoping Grealish keeps a low profile tomorrow.

The more I look at the mids the more I think I actually prefer the 7.0 bracket to the 8.0s

    Grealish
    B.Silva
    Coutinho
    Rashford
    Zaha

JWP, ASM and Trossard arguably too

if those 5 score more than

      Diaz
      Mount
      Foden
      Mahrez
      Saka

      I'll eat my hat

Sorry but that's a rubbish take.

You only like the 7.0m bracket more because they're less popular. All of those players in there have less potential than the 8m bracket.

For me it enables me to go threemium.

But each to their own on their own squads, just lighting there’s also some promising options at 6.5-7.0, of course not as promising as 8.0 but just highlighting there are others that seem decent even if one’s punt at that price fails.

When HDTV flat screens came out circa 2007-08isb, LG weren't great iirc. Sony LCD and Pioneer Plasma at 1080p were popular...

now LG and Samsung as 4K, HDR, OLEDs seem to be the narrative

HDR doesn't seem too common in what is bracket of overwhelming choice (like the 8m mids!)

So Zinchenko and Trippier best replacements for James and Perisic who are both looking like risky picks?

Or do we wait before we see Zinchenko playing as a mid before jumping on him?

Not sold on Trippier's fixtures past the first 2. Zinchenko is a wait and see for me, perhaps Gabriel or Saliba for a 4.5 punt.

Bar Man City & Liverpool defenders, there’s a lot of unknowns. Chelsea wingbacks? Spurs wingbacks, rotation etc…I kinda like starting Trippier because his first 2 fixtures are decent….then re-access after that

First post here in a long time. What’s your thoughts on having Son & Robbo instead of Kane & Diaz?

I really think Son & Robbo will score more points but the problem is team structure

I have the same problem with team structure. Kane & Robbo are in my team with Salah for what it's worth.

team structure can be fixed with a few transfers, go with you you think scores more points

I'm sure on Robbo, but on Kane ahead of Son (50/50) atm due to ownership. Not sure many will captain Son, whilst a few will captain Kane and then Haaland by extension

Ultimately, Son/KDB is a 450 point stream to tap into

    Thoughts??

    Ederson
    TAA - Cancelo - James - Zinchenko
    Salah - Mahrez - Martinelli - Neto
    Kane - Jesus
    (Darlow - N.Williams - Andreas - Archer)

Leave Mahrez or should i go for another Midfielder??

      Diaz.

If Mane was 8m we wouldn't really be having this discussion. Diaz is Mane's direct replacement. He scored 14 goals in 18 games for Porto and then 4 in 13 (including a bunch of sub appearances) for Pool.

      1. @persecuted_by_mods
        4 years, 23 days ago

While I agree I'd pick Diaz, he isn't just Mane reborn. Since he has arrived here he has looked excellent, well worth the 8m but his attacking returns weren't Mane level

Pre season he's continued the same, looks the most threatening player on the pitch but the returns don't match it

"Marc Cucurella has followed up three informal requests to leave Brighton with a formal transfer request. Player now actively trying to force move after lack of movement.

Cheers. Mahrez is a great pick, but I always seem to get him at the wrong time. Feel he won't play just to mock me! But then most city mids are a gamble, etc kdb

That is the risk we take with City, but it is worth it, Mahrez can explode of the bench to, but I think he is pretty nailed on start of the season

Any reason not to go Cash? I think Digne is better on paper due to set pieces, but I'm planning to go Cash because I find him fun to watch, and Digne seems a more injury prone player. I think Cash might edge Digne as well in open play.

Okay landed here till Sunday, a no Salah approach.

    Pope
    TAA, Robbo, Cancelo, Saliba
    KDB, Diaz, JWP, Martinelli
    Kane, Jesus

Darlow. S Longstaff, Lyle Taylor, Neco Williams.

        Can't have them all.

Son or KDB affords a better midfield overall.

        I may relinquish.

Isn't Robbo a better option for 1m less?

the issue is that probably means upgrading a 6.0 defender to robbo for 1m, and then having to get a 7.0 mid of which there is only really grealish.

          depends on team structure obviously.

      Kulusevski 75%
      Diaz 99%

The only way I could possibly agree with this is if he moved to Spurs, or maybe if Leicester's squad is absolutely gutted by sales. But I have a feeling you're just dishing out thoughtless proclamations. He's an incredibly talented player, did great for me in FPL last season, and looks on it from what I've seen of Leicester's friendlies.
