With Fantasy Premier League (FPL) live for 2022/23, we’ll be welcoming back our stellar team of Pro Pundits and Hall of Famers for the new campaign.

Our writers will be providing regular articles and team reveals throughout the new season, with only Premium Members able to access every single one.

Here, Burning Questions co-host Pras looks at windows for the first Wildcard.

I think I speak for everyone when I say, I can’t wait for the deadline on Friday! All pre-season friendly information has been processed, 2021/22 data has been applied and all permutations have been considered. But wait, have they? I have seen a lot of managers confidently say that given the Gameweek 16 unlimited transfers, they will be aggressive this season, and go for an “early Wildcard”. But there is no consensus of what “early” means. I have heard suggestions of Gameweeks 4-5 ahead of the beginning of midweek fixtures. Some say they want to wait for the transfer window to close, which is pre-Gameweek 6. Others have been suggesting the international break before Gameweek 9. Many prefer a freestyle approach.

I am all for the latter freestyle mindset and to use the Wildcard when there are enough problems in my team. However, I do still think one should know the pros and of cons each window and to take that into account when pulling the trigger. More importantly, potentially have a base case window in mind and take that into account in building your Gameweek 1 team. I will try to make the case for one Gameweek in particular.

For each key window, I will discuss the top and bottom five teams on the Season Ticker leading up to that week to take into account your optimal Gameweek 1 set-up. I also look at the top and bottom five teams on the Wildcard (i.e. from the Wildcard week until Gameweek 16) to assess who it is you are targeting with the chip. I’ll then talk about a few things that stand out, such as fixture swings, pros/cons and strategy.

Before we dive in, I should note that Sonaldo and I discussed this topic in great detail on the Burning Questions video this week. I would encourage you to check that out, if this topic is of further interest:

Also, I have shared below the excellent Legomane’s calendar to reference the fixtures before and after each window.

Image

Gameweek 3 Wildcard – The ultra-aggressive Wildcard

There are always a few mavericks who chose a very early Wildcard route and maybe even Bench Boost in Gameweek 1. I think the Chelsea v Spurs game in Gameweek 2 presents a good opportunity to do this. One could target a ‘threemium’ draft – eg. Mohamed Salah (£13.0m), Harry Kane (£11.5m) and Kevin De Bruyne (£12.0m) – with fillers from Man Utd, Newcastle, Villa and Wolves. Then switch the Spurs player for another City player ahead of Bournemouth (H). After the Wildcard, you can more confidently pick the Chelsea and Spurs players to complement the Liverpool, Man City and Arsenal assets.

Pros:

  • Maximize big hitters initially – then pick the right ones with some more information
  • Price rises

Cons:

  • Not enough season info/underlying data
  • Transfer window still open

Gameweek 5 Wildcard – The midweek free Wildcard

There is a line of thinking that, once the midweek fixtures commence, which is after Gamweek 4, the rotation for the top teams begins. So why not maximize that by filling up on the best five clubs and then assess thereafter? I was surprised to note however that from Gameweeks 5-16, Spurs, Arsenal and Man Utd are bottom of the ticker if you Wildcarded in this window.

Pros:

  • Since the good teams still have great fixtures, this could involve a reshuffle between them eg. Robbo vs Diaz vs Nunez, Grealish vs Dias vs Foden, Threemium vs Twomium
  • Get on Leicester, Palace early if they are looking good

Cons:

  • Not enough season info/underlying data
  • Unclear what the wildcard is for: Arsenal, Liverpool still with good short-term fixtures
  • Short window to wildcard: Gameweek 5 is during a midweek
  • Transfer window still open

Gameweek 6 Wildcard – The post-transfer window wildcard

      Great team. Good luck.

Perisic will play 60+ mins in less than 19 games over the whole season. Guess you already know that.

Is it silly saving 1m ITB?

    Current team:

    G: Ramsdale (Ward)
    D: TAA - Robbo - Cancelo - Perisic (Williams)
    M: Salah - Rashford - Martinelli - Bailey (Andreas)
    F: Haaland - Jesus (Greenwood)

Think it might give me flexibility to see how Neto plays or whether one of the 8m takes off and I can upgrade Rashy.

    Appreciate any thoughts!

Tough one for me... Currently on A but not having James is kind of scary. I do have Trent, Robbo and Cancelo already in defense so it should be quite strong still.

    A. Mount, Martinelli and Trippier
    or
    B. Saka, Bailey and James

Can't really squeeze 1m unless I'm drastically downgrading my midfield 🙁 Most likely going without James at the start. Trippier -> Cucurella seems like the obvious move if Cucurella joins Chelsea

    Raya
    Robbo Perisic Walker White
    Salah(C) L.Diaz Kulusevski Mount
    Haaland Jesus

    Ward Greenwood N.Williams Andersen

    Final dilemma:

      GW1: stick as is
      GW2: Kulu > Foden
      GW3: Foden > Saka

Brave going without TAA and Cancelo. You'll likely be wildcarding earlier; between GWs 4-6. That's not say the team isn't good; I like it.

G2G? 0.5 ITB, eyeing Bowen from GW2 in place of Kulu maybe:

    Ward/Iversen

Salah (C), Kulu, Neto (Andreas, Lavia)
    Haaland, Jesus (Greenwood)

The only thing that made me baulk away from plumping for Saka as my 8m mid was the fact that Martinelli & Jesus were already nailed in there and I was wary of putting all my eggs in the one basket. Then I remembered how well Son, Kulu & Kane served me in the second part of last season and now it just seems the right way to go. Those fixtures up to GW8 are excellent and, theoretically, if Arsenal's season somehow consisted of repeating those eight fixtures for the next nine months you could add at least 1m to those player's prices.

    1. Reckoner.

I'm contemplating Kulu, Martinelli, Jesus for GWs 1-2 then Kulu > Saka for GW3. Maybe just going for Saka, and the triple up, from the start is the right play?!

Totally agree triple Arsenal could really take off.

If we think arsenal will score at least 10 goals from their first 5 then it's worth tripling up on Saka, Jesus and Martinelli as an Arsenal goal will almost certainly result in points

So after a full preseason of only going with two premiums I’ve finally gone with three…

    Thoughts please:

    Ward
    TAA, Cancelo, Zinchenko, Trippier
    Salah, Neto, Bailey
    Haaland, Jesus, Kane

    Iversen, Andreas, N.Williams, DaSilva

    1. Karhumies
      • 14 Years
      3 years, 11 months ago

Ward-Iversen a bit too risky for me. Ward-Sanchez or Ward-Raya would seem a lot better. Hard to get there without downgrading either Cancelo (James, Walker, Martinelli) or Jesus (Bamford, Wilson, Martinelli), though. Bailey is a rotation risk, if you want a more nailed 5.0 mid, then KDH is an option.

  24. The Mighty Whites

A: Have the Leicester pair of GK with 0.5 ITB to potentially help with getting Bailey out down the line
B: 0.0 ITB with rotating GK of Sanchez & Ward?

    1. Karhumies
      • 14 Years

Sanchez & Ward IMO. You can bench Bailey until WC1, he's cheap enough to start Pereira or Williams instead occasionally if needed.

Is it too risky going without one of Son and Kane?

Salah and Haaland are locks for me, and unsure whether to go for one of them or go for the template strong defence

Threemium sacrifices the strong defense into 5.0s (Gabriel, Trippier, Walker, Dier/Doherty, etc.). There is a "middle ground" option to get either Kulusevski or Perisic with two premiums.

How much of a better pick is Perisic over Trippier?

    Thanks.

He’s not. Trippier better IMO. Too many fifa players in here obsessed with Perisic

Perisic is the better player, for the better team, is more attacking, on paper is a better fpl asset, but is a rotation risk

He is not a rotation risk. He will play all 38 games, so you will not get your bench points. But, he will play 60+ mins in only 15-20 games. Remaining games, you are looking at 1 pointers.

I think Trippier is a better pick than Perisic. But, to each his own.

Wait and see on Aaronson (Leeds fan talking here). Yes he got 3 assists in our last pre-season friendly but it was against a recently relegated Serie A team. Also his attacking returns at RB Salzburg weren't actually that great. He's young though so Rome to improve, just no need to gamble on him early on imo. We already know what Neto can do at this level.
