Every Gameweek here at Fantasy Football Scout, we bring you analysis of the teams and chip analysis of the leading Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers via the excellent LiveFPL website.

Usually we concentrate on the top 10,000 but we’re in the very early stages of the campaign and the front-runners are still jostling for position.

So instead, we’ll take a quick look at how the all-time elite FPL bosses have set up for Gameweek 1.

INTRODUCING THE ‘LEGENDARY MANAGERS’

Much like our very own Hall of Fame, the LiveFPL site features its own list of the leading 1,000 FPL managers of all time.

You can see the top 10 above, with a very familar name at the top of the pile.

Other notable names you may recognise further down the list include Finn Sollie (2nd), John Canning (43rd), Pranil ‘Lateriser’ Sheth (52nd), Mark Sutherns (88th) and one of our new recruits for the 2022/23 season, Obay Eid (125th).

OWNERSHIP

There’s a very definite template that has formed at this early stage of the season.

A total of 13 players are owned by more than 60% of these featured managers, with bench fodder Neco Williams (£4.0m), Andreas Pereira (£4.5m) and Cameron Archer (£4.5m) also able to boast such popularity and only not featuring on the above list because of their low ‘effective ownerships’.

There is a bit more of a divide with the second goalkeeper slot, with some managers installing Danny Ward (£4.0m) as their number one and having the 31%-owned Daniel Iversen (£4.0m) as back-up. Others will be using Ward as more of a bench-warmer or as part of a budget rotation, with Aaron Ramsdale (£5.0m) a part of 32.3% of squads and Robert Sanchez (£4.5m) in 22.9% of them.

It’s effectively the 15th and final spot that is most keenly contested, with Pedro Neto (£5.5m) the next most-owned on 44.6%.

Around two-thirds of managers had an £8.0m midfielder in place, perhaps with a view to swapping the candidates around when favourable fixture runs come and go. Luis Diaz (£8.0m) was the most owned of these players but still in only 23.6% of teams.

CAPTAINCY

This one is nice and easy: the vast majority of our featured FPL bosses handed the armband to Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) for his double-digit haul against Fulham on Saturday lunchtime.

FABIO BORGES’ TEAM

The man, the myth, the legend.

Top of not just the LiveFPL ‘legendary managers’ but also our very own Hall of Fame, Fabio Borges has registered seven successive finishes in the top 5k.

He started Gameweek 1 with a biggish at the back 5-3-2, with Gabriel Magalhaes (£5.0m) joining four £6.0m+ defenders. Fabio did, however, favour the Ward/Iversen double-up.

There are no surprises elsewhere, with the inclusion of Gabriel over Williams meaning that two £4.5m midfielders warm his bench and there is place for a Neto or a Leon Bailey (£5.0m).

BENCH BOOST IN GAMEWEEK 1?

How the all-time best FPL managers set up for Gameweek 1 1

Six of the elite 1,000 played their Bench Boost chips in Gameweek 1, a tactic we’ve seen increasingly used in recent years as it eliminates the necessity to plan for/worry about it later in the season.

The best of the half-dozen to use it scored 17 points, a more than respectable score, but two of the six burned it on a bench full of fodder and a non-playing goalkeeper. The other boosted benches scored 8, 11 and 13.

If you sell he starts and hauls and if you keep he's on the bench every week.

In Game 4 or 8 (or anything in between) use your wildcard for unlimited transfers. That’s my recommendation do not need to. We also have unlimited transfers all World Cup. Secon wild card in January

Haaland is still a must for now. Do not be disheartened with Liverpool defence from GW1. They will get a lot of points and worth doubling up. Cancelo inverting to central is promising. Good budget players to fit around Haaland, Cancelo, Salah are plentiful. One 8 mil if you can fit.

Also wait between 4-8 GW for squad value to rise if you can

    RANT Room for United fans:

Seriously, I mean what is happening at United - why in the world do we need to go for Arnautovic and why Rabiot when there are so many better & proven PL players available to get....

Avoid Panic Buying is something that has been taught so many times on this FFScout site and United is just doing the same mistake.

    I. Zidane should be played in the middle in place of McFred - I.Zidane and Eriksen would be a good combo....
Kick out Maguire and bring in Varane : Varane + Martinez in the CB role
Stick with Sancho and Rash on the wing, Elanga is also available and so as Garnacho to play their part on the wings.

Ronaldo upfront with Bruno behind him and this Team can change the result....

Getting a new player in after Season kickstarted is only confirming Out of Top 4 finish for United this season

Shouldn't manager give more chances to the young players instead - by bringing in unwanted players, aren't they ruining under under 23/21 squad?
ETH has record of giving chances to the young players and instead of buying crap & finish out of Top 4 at the end of season, should they not be trusting the youth and end up out of Top 4 instead?

Iqbal and Grancho are very talented and coming from United academy, they may bring the fire missing in the Team.

Maybe he has no say in the transfers? We don't know what's happening behind the scenes.

But we know it's a terribly run club so whatever that has happened is not surprising

One thing I didn't like about EtH is trusting these bunch of players during preseason, assuming they're good enough.

It's difficult to play Zidane/Garnacho in PL games with little experience. Garner should be considered though.

He's learnt his lesson now albeit late and we could possibly see more youngsters from now onwards

Rangnick was a poor choice as manager but good choice for recruitment consultant. The reason he didn't follow through on the role and left the club is because ETH wanted control over that. So he definitely has a big say - I mean, the waste of months pursuing a player who repeats every day that he doesn't want to go to United is down to ETH's insistence.

But he also sees the players on the training ground and must have decided which kids aren't ready, and why. So I think we need to accept his judgement on not relying on the kids.

Right, the United board need to shake off the mindset that they're an entitled club, inherently desirable. They're not. But as to the second part of your statement, you're right in terms of on the pitch, but both Arnie and Rabiot have a history of being confrontational, troublemakers behind the scenes. After they've had to put up with Pogba's antics and now Ronaldo, why does the club want to do that to itself. They're panicking and not thinking through the implications, guaranteeing a continuation of the same old self-inflicted problems.

I am getting sick just looking at template team mids...Neto and Bailey allong with Rashford...brutal. So much problems in one place. Glad I went the other way. Anyways GL to all of you on fixing that chaos.

You sound like you had a fantastic GW1! Which non-template players did you go for and what was your score?

Oh don't worry, I just checked. You scored the same as me (and I had plenty of 'template' players).

      2. iL PiStOlErO

        79pts

        Ramsdale
        Robbo Walker Dier Jansson
        Salah L.Diaz Kulu Mount
        Haaland Jesus

        Ward Greenwood Andreas N. Williams

Sacraficed that defence but super happy with that front 6, expect even more returns this week. First time playing without Trent, scary but can always get him in when he hauls. Hope Robbo should cover it good for now. Anyways the plan was always to leave it like this for few weeks and if that defences start shooting to do WC.

Yes... Guilty of having 0 ft after Kane to Haaland and having Bailey, Rashford and Perisic. Risks taken, risks lost. Kulusevski soon 8.1, so ditching them all would cost -12. However, Avl has first home fixture next, so they may improve, Perisic may start come gw 3 and Rashford has leaky Bre next. The lack of obvious targets is also an issue. Not enough info yet.

True that. No matter the team and pts in gw1 the best is to have 2ft and then do -4 or even -8 in gw3. If I scored 20pts in gw1 I would still have the same approach. As you said not enough info yet.

    Set for GW2?

    Meslier (Raya)
    Trent Cancelo Trippier Zinchenko Cash
    Salah Diaz Rashford (Neto Andreas)
    Haaland Jesus (Plange)

The only question is who to captain, leaning towards Haaland especially as I will be there in the stadium...equally Salah Vs an unconvincing Palace is very attractive...
