Scout Picks - Bus Team

We’ve put together our Scout Picks ‘bus team’ ahead of Gameweek 2 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL).

For those who haven’t seen this article series before, it’s essentially a rough, first draft of our regular picks, which get finalised and published much closer to the deadline.

We are limited to a £83.0m budget for our starting XI, unless using a back-five formation. In that scenario, it drops to £82.5m, as £17.5m is the minimum spend that our substitutes will cost.

READ MORE: Readers vote for the Scout Picks substitutes bench to be price-capped

The final picks will stay as they are and cement our weekly selection based on the Scout Squad long-list entries and fresh injury updates but this ‘bus team’ article – a term coined by the Always Cheating boys – will discuss the players who are likely to be in the running.

Off we go again, then, with our early thoughts on the runners and riders up for selection in Gameweek 2, followed by the preliminary picks themselves.

THE LIKELY LADS

learning-from-the-great-and-the-good-21-22-closing-time 1

The opening weekend of the 2022/23 Premier League season produced plenty of surprises, with Manchester United suffering defeat against Brighton and Hove Albion and Liverpool dropping points at newly-promoted Fulham.

However, Mohamed Salah‘s (£13.0m) opening-day double-digit haul felt reassuringly familiar, rewarding those who captained him with a goal and assist.

Erling Haaland (£11.6m), meanwhile, also started fast with a brace of goals at West Ham United, and it’s clear the pair are the two stand-out attacking options to own ahead of Gameweek 2.

Defensive cover from both Liverpool and Manchester City also feels important, with Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.5m) and Joao Cancelo (£7.0m) our favoured routes in, given their ability to contribute points at both ends of the pitch.

United as a team are a flop.

Every single player there is underperforming their potential. It's the management (not manager solely) that's to blame.

Struggling on the call between Bailey and Pereira myself. Should give Bailey another chance but Pereira looked decent and Wolves looked a bit unorganised in defence, Everton weren't too bad defensively and will have Coady to call upon now too

Are we expecting Reece James to play RCB this week to mark Son? Wondering whether to bench him for Saliba

Chelsea defence has an audition this week. Everton wasn't a good enough sample set. Let's see how they fare when Conte goes for the jugular

    2. House Frey Wedding Planner

If you have Reece James, then don't bench him against anyone. Always a chance he can get moved to RCB......and always a chance he could return an explosive haul as well

      1. The Mentaculus
        • 4 Years
        3 years, 9 months ago

Not really feeling the CS so only want to play him for attacking returns. And if he's RCB & loses corners...

          • 7 Years
          3 years, 9 months ago

Risks were always there in terms of cameos and what position he starts. But if you've made the call to have him in your team because he can return big hauls then you have to play him every game.

          1. The Mentaculus
            • 4 Years

Not really - he should be at WB generally, except for specific matchups. At WB I would play him in an fixture, but if I have good reason to suspect he'll be CB - then, well, who wants to play their CBs v City/Liverpool/Spurs? Especially when I have a good 1st sub who I'm happy to play

Looking at this as a possible GW3 WC. Thoughts?

    Ward/Iversen
    Robbo Dias Walker Zinc Neco
    Salah Son Martinelli Andreas Dasilva
    Haaland Darwin Archer

Not overly comfortable with the Ward/Iversen double up but struggling where to get the 0.5 for Sanchez (for Iversen obv.). Thinking downgrade Zinc to Saliba possibly?.

One transfer that's making me laugh is the clamour to get in Kulusevski.

He played well against the team that gets spanked regularly. Next he plays Chelsea and will probably be subbed early.

Don't get me wrong he's a good player, but they hype is a bit much.

        Indeed.

He's done very well against Southampton, but I expect Son and Kane to start getting the hauls and Kulusevski to drop off.

Very awkward price of 8.1m too. It's a wait and see from me.

To be fair he was really really good in the last game. He returned away to City last year so who's to say he will flop against Chelsea? And even if he does, the next 2 fixtures are good for Spurs. 6 goals and 9 assists since signing at the end of January is not to be sniffed at.

He's also a viable way into getting a Spurs attacker without breaking the bank for Son or Kane.

I wouldn't triple up on any team so early in the season. It can backfire.

One of the mistakes I made was tripling up on teams - Arsenal and Liverpool. There's no way for me to pick someone else from the same team without taking hits.

        Lesson learnt for next season!

        1. House Frey Wedding Planner
          • 7 Years

I don't see tripling up as a mistake if the fixtures are good and you pick the right players.

On the contrary I think it's a huge opportunity to attack the weaker fixtures. Plan was always to have triple Arsenal for gw3-5 and predicted they will score at least 12 goals from their first 5.

Only things stopping me from starting with triple Arsenal was that Palace game and to maybe have some flexibility on who I'd want for my third asset

If I didn't triple up, maybe I would only have Jesus and Saka, and no Martinelli. Not tripling up because it can backfire can backfire. We can do this all day!

        What if Saka scored?

I still think that Jesus, Marti & Saka individually stack up better against other outfield options compared to Saliba, Gabriel and Zinchenko against other defensive options.

Saliba is probably the best option at that price, but Arsenal won't keep that many more clean sheets than, say, Newcastle who have defenders with more goal threat at 4.5 and 5.0. Plus we don't know that Saliba is nailed yet, even though it seems likely from his performance.

Zinchenko is still quite a risk at this point. It would be a mistake to say it's a mistake to go without him from GW1 imo. You made a reasonable decision to pick 3 attacking options imo

Deciding to mix it up a bit for the season and only go with players under 20% ownership. Didn't think it would be anywhere close to optimal and just for fun - but 1 week in and I wish I hadn't haha.

Kane but it was worth a go. Knew I could make the switch and honestly not expecting much pressure on transfers, picked a team for the first 7 or 8 weeks, any moves should be luxury, barring injuries.

I could say Kane but I don't feel he was a mistake through and through, it's more that I had Nunez as one of my earliest targets but felt making the punt so early wasn't worthwhile so I went with Kane. That being said I made getting Nunez easier by being able to do it in one move. I'm sure Kane will still pick up heaps of points this season but I feel I should have given better thought to choosing him with Spurs still not having signed a central creator this summer but focusing on others that can chip in out wide and improving defensively

I got 59 which seems low compared to the number son here, but cant honestly say much except Digne, but based on what Parker said about injuries and me thinking Villa would be alot better, i cant feel bad
Not really a bad call on Kane over Haaland as i thought the easier option plus Kane was good in preseason
KDH on my bench is annoying, but again with Villa, easy option to play Bailey i thought

Starting with Son instead of KDB. Probably going to make the switch with a FT. Not a big mistake though. Son was a good GW1 captain option.

The other mistake was maybe presuming that Wolves would be decent defensively by default. Started with Collins in my starting XI. I don't think it's worth worrying about at this point. They might prove to be solid again and he's still a good option in good fixtures at that price I feel. Can consider upgrading if/when the time is right

My mistake was getting double villa.

My plan is to give them 1 more week before transferring them out, unless they haul and i remember that a 1 week blank is not a mistake but I will most certainly use my transfers to fix my gw 2 mistakes when haaland and Salah blank.

I don't feel I made any blunders per se; my double Liverpool defence and Jesus had one of those days, but my faith isn't shaken. My closest to a blunder is double Villa in Cash and Bailey. If they bomb in GW2 I'll call it a blunder, but I'm giving Gerrard that game to put it right.

It’s important to distinguish between mistakes and judgment calls that didn’t pan out in GW1.

Kane v Haaland was a coin toss, but if you went with Kane and didn’t have a plan for what happened in GW1, that’s an error.

It’s laughable to judge the Trent/Robbo double up as a mistake after one game.

Bailey and/or other Villa assets was a reasonable two-week call, and If if it doesn’t work out we have options in GW3.

I’m delighted with my Arsenal triple up which I got for the juicy fixtures to come, rather than a tough opening fixture at Palace. It might not work, but that doesn’t make it a mistake.

Brighton have great fixtures from GW3 to GW8 (which is when I'd WC). He's looking to be in a more advanced role, we know what he can do from that position (look at his debut season, 15 G+A), 5.5 not breaking the bank.

The way I see it, Salah is the safe pick. With Haaland it's greater potential risk and reward.

Not sure it’s that much of a risk. Who would they replace him with? And anyway, If he comes on for 25 minutes at the end he’ll probably score and if he doesn’t come on you’ve got a VC.

Bournemouth scored early and tbf defended well against some very odd starting line up decisions from Gerrard leading to an ineffective alroubd display from Villa. Could easily be wrong but I don’t fancy Bournemouth to maintain such a solid defensive outlook going forward.

I don't really regret it - I learned a fair amount from it. At the start of the season I definitely took some unnecessary & unrewarding hits restructuring my team a few times, but by the second half many of them targeting DGW fixtures paid off pretty well

I'm never going to take no hits, as much as reducing hits is advisable there are a fair few occasions where I think it's nearly better to take a hit than to not. But I am certainly hoping to cut down on them for sure. I cut down on them last year but can still do better, although I will say the postponements hit me harder than some others, so hopefully if we don't have any of those this year and with the free transfers during the WC it should make things a lot easier.

              1. @persecuted_by_mods
                  3 years, 9 months ago

Yeah I don't mean 0 but I'm definitely trying to cut down and only do them rarely. I haven't defined in my head a scenario where I would take it other than the obvious (7 players out covid)

Main reason for attempting to stop is just how terrible the outcomes have been when I do them

I've had bad outcomes but have had a lot of good ones from aggressive moves so I'm OK with the risk as long as I feel comfortable that my reasoning behind taking a hit instead of waiting is logical. Even if it doesn't always work out, if I feel it was the right move on paper I'll generally be OK with it

Normally aim to but I think 4 is the least I've ever managed, there are alway instances where injuries and suspension mean that taking a hit makes more sense than playing one of your subs no matter how well you plan for the weeks ahead.

I am guessing Bailey played very badly as no one wants him any more - is it him? Or just the fact Villa looked terrible? Surely they will improve and so will he?

From an attacking perspective Bailey was the best of the bunch in the first half. Villa were generally woeful . Gerrard didn't seem to know how to change things and looked lost

This - and it was evident since the tail end of last season that all is not well. 2 wins in 12 games says it all really.....

Looked at Villas ratings and he was one of the better performers tbh
Coutinho i read was the worst by far along with Ramsey

Watkins will def come in youd think, but whether a straight swap for Ings or a formation change is hard to guess

Im starting him regardless, already used my free tfr

Gerrard needs a reaction, fans are turning on him due to him playing favourites. He's also made some big calls like Mings captaincy which just adds pressure

Gerrard keeps changing things around, and could end up being his own downfall unless he finds and sticks to a formation

I wish we could do the whole season in 38 days. I don't even need to watch the games. I just want to make my transfers, complete the puzzle and check out my score at the end.

Slowest game ever made. Slower than chess. You make one or two decisions a week.

Should take up 10 mins of your time a week, max.
