Meet the Manager: FPL Journal creator Craig Priestley

Ahead of the 2022/23 pre-season, Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers were offered a simple approach to managing their team by writer and social media manager Craig Priestley (@CraigyBacha).

With some help from illustrator @fpldoodles1, he has created the FPL Journal, offering managers the chance to put down their phones, stop taking screen shots of hundreds of drafts and go back to pen and paper management.

Meet the Manager - FPL Journal creator Craig Priestley

Inspired by the original Fantasy Football games, where teams were submitted by post, the book offers managers the chance to plot their moves and select their players. They – or their kids – can even do a spot of colouring in when putting in the team kits!

By writing notes along the way, Craig is offering a back-to-basics take on FPL management that many have not experienced since they were able to select Thierry Henry and Alan Shearer in their team.

Joe chats to Craig about his inspiration for the book as well as how managers are psychologically benefitting from being able to write out their thoughts on paper, colour in selected players and cut down on their screen time.

While the Meet the Manager series is focused on managers with an interesting story to tell, rather than primarily looking at their rank history, this latest video and podcast’s content is certainly helped by Craig’s strong recent track record in the game.

Over the last seven seasons he has a top 2,000 finish as well as four other campaign conclusions within the top 40,000.

Meet the Manager - FPL Journal creator Craig Priestley 3

His rank of 1,847 in the Covid-impacted 2020/21 season is particularly impressive and was achieved after discovering the Fantasy Football Scout Members Area. He understandably has been a Member of this website ever since.

Above all, a patient approach to players has guided him to strong finishes and that is particularly the case this season so far, with Aston Villa’s Leon Bailey (£5.0m), who he is keen to keep before he plays Everton this weekend.

Joe and Craig look over the key decisions to face managers ahead of Gameweek 2 as a snapshot of his thinking. He reveals his captaincy plans, Wildcard thoughts ahead of the World Cup, as well as players that may make way soon.

Meet the Manager - FPL Journal creator Craig Priestley 1

Joe’s thoughts

Craig’s FPL Journal is a great example of the imagination and talent across the Fantasy Football community.

Already community members are showcasing a wealth of digital design and number-crunching talents to help FPL managers.

What Craig has done is look back at the origins of the game and replicate them in a digital age.

This enables managers to cut down on their screen time and enjoy FPL in a different, more creative way.

Although not intended as a colouring in book, that is exactly what the journal offers, with all the calming mental health benefits that brings.

In fact, he is so impressed with the community’s response to the colouring in aspect of the book that he is considering launching a children’s versions for FPL managers’ kids and some of the game’s youngest players to use.

I don't love A or C. Not really sure where Zinchenko plays once Tierney is fully fit and he isn't far away from that, City have signed a LB and are looking at Guerreiro currently as well so Walker's time at RB may be limited fairly soon. I have Trippier and am happy with him but I'm not sure if I'd bring him in right now with City and Liverpool in the next 4

Layer Road, Colchester. We were hosting a first Div side - Man U, Derby? Forget. Mottie was perched on some rickety scaffolding make his after match report live on Grandstand. I didn't realise so was shouting to get his attention to admire our banner. He kept glancing down while looking into his monitor then soon after swore at us. Friends later told me how I'd been interrupting him on live TV. Carried the shame for nearly 50 years now.

For those who missed to Haaland price rise on Sunday night and did a -4 what did you do?

    Ramsdale
    TAA/Robbo/Cancelo/James/Perisic
    Salah/Martinelli/Bailey
    Kane/Jesus

    Ward/Pereira/Neto/Archer

    I don't know whether doing

    A. Perisic to Walker/Zinc
    B Perisic to Neco
    C. Bailey to Da Silva (not sure how the new Brentford signing Damsgaard will affect his minutes)
    D. Neto down to 4.5

Yes, with Sterling and Mount in midfield. Salah, Jesus, Saka, Trent etc.

I decided Haaland is without a doubt a must have and fancied Darwin as well.

Haaland could double rise and Darwin is looking like rising.

I don't think my WC was played on purpose just for the sake of using it.

You're assumption is spot on, switched from Kane to Haaland.
About Darwin, major hitch is that I already own 3 Liverpool, will get off from Robertson most probably, which is possible only in the multiple weeks without taking a hit.
Other than this, who shall I get in from Mancity for KDB in the third slot, already have Cancelo and Haaland?

    I'm contemplating a wild one.

    Son + Plange > Darwin + Gundogan -4

Can someone talk me off the cliff? Seems like I'd be capitalizing big time on great fixtures this week. Super low ownership, very high upside.

    Team would be:

    Sanchez
    TAA James Walker
    Salah Gundogan Martinelli Bailey
    Haaland Jesus Darwin
    (Ward Andreas White Neco)

It's a bit mad innit? Gundogan could be Grealish as well.

Think Gundogan could be a great option again especially if they do sell Bernardo. Does it leave you with enough funds to hop on the 8.0m mids or Kulu at 8.1m?

Guess you still have Grealish and Sancho as options sub 7.5m - not quite as strong a bracket though but funds can always be found.

I do think it's important to get Darwin in as another goal this GW and everyone will be restructuring to get him in.

    3. Nate(U)dog(ie)
      • 3 Years

Keeping a close eye on Gundogan situation but too soon to go for him I think. Bernardo may yet stay and if he does then it's likely a failed punt. Give it the extra week

If you're positive he plays then sure. But Bernardo could come in or Phillips could come in giving Rodri room to move forward (unlikely probably, but not impossible)

I'd hold, Bou play a low block and city have showed it not always easy to break down.

If you want Darwin, then a mini WC with 2 ft next week might give you some better options. You may wish to include Bailey in next weeks triple move. You may also want Cancelo at that point

Its not really mad, I think they both look great buys. My only reservation is losing Son who might be a more valuable differential himself. But if you don't see yourself capping him then maybe it does work for your team. I'm going to be a lonely Son owner soon it seems

On another day Son gets 16 points in the last game. Gundogan could also not start. If you hold you have more info, another look at son, 2 free transfers and maybe more points you never know!

This move goes entirely against how I usually play. 90% sure I will roll FT but it's very tempting ngl.

I'd normally hold, but that new squad does look pretty hot. You could make up the minus 4 very fast, but you'd be quivering every time Son goes close.

Yeah totally get that it’s tempting. And Darwin could be incredible but we can’t be certain yet imo. I’m without a certain key Man City player this week but gonna hold out for a week and bet on Son, reassess and be prepared to wildcard the week after into a Haaland Darwin team if I want to

If Darwin scores against Palace that will be an unstoppable train. Thinking to hop on early. But yeah, GW3 for Son looks really good.

It's just my overall team suffers a bit having to play Bailey + Andreas most weeks.

            Not really.

My draft is a very streamlined threemium. If I realistically want to upgrade it, I'd have to ditch one of the big three or TAA.

No, I have Spurs now after WC, Kulu and will see which is the defender which will make the most sence from Chelsea after the match is completed. I also like Sess so could end up having double Spurs.

    i traded

    Laporte Bruno Jota

obv a risk as laporte jota out till end of month but i think long term it pays off and my squad can cover some games.

I much prefer the former personally. Laporte and Jota out for a while and Jota will be in and out of the side when he's fit anyway probably. Not really sure on Bruno or what his intended role is yet. Koulibably, Mount and Welbeck are fit now and much more reliable for starts

    Sanchez
    Trent Robertson James Cancelo Trippier
    Saka Salah Bailey
    Jesus Harlaand (c)

    Ward Andreas DaSilva Greenwood

Plan to hold this week then next use 2FT to downgrade Robertson or Cancelo, to maybe Walker/Zinchenko/and upgrade Bailey, probably to rodrigo

    Good?

What I am hoping for is another Sessegnon start. Saliba my place holder.

If Perisic starts, I keep Saliba.

Really tempted to do Mount to Saka for free.
I already have Martinelli and Jesus, is 3 attackers from Arsenal too much?

    A) Do it
    B) Don't, Mount will come good.

I'm giving Mount another 3 games . Too soon to ditch after one.

Well yes, I could have added that using FT now might hinder your chance from getting Darwin.

Not that I am saying he must but there is every chance he could.

    Best move?

    A) Kane (che) + Digne (EVE) > Roll FT
    B) Darwin (CRY) + Digne (EVE) > Use FT
    C) Darwin (CRY) + Cancelo (BOU) > -4

FPL Journal entry Aug 11 - today somebody asked if Foden would play. T’was very amusing to observe their agonising over the question and I enjoyed it very much. I was compelled to yell Fodenfreude, which I am pleased to say attracted one upvote. Will sleep well tonight.

      Dasilva if he starts starting

Brentford have just signed a player who will probably play in DaSilva's place. Andreas is nailed.

For this week? See what Frank says, he might be tempted to drop Jensen for Dasilva after the last game. But long-term it's possibly going to be Norgaard and then Baptiste/Jensen/Dasilva/Janelt fighting it out for the other 2 midfield spots

Isn’t Jensen the one being groomed in the role of playmaker?

It seemed that way but a lot of Brentford fans don't seem to rate him or think he's good enough, he had 0g 1a in 31 games last season. Frank said he needs to "step up" a few weeks ago but I wonder with Damsgaard there now if he'll try to focus on a different type of playmaker/playmaking through the side

*should add Damsgaard to that last list

    Which two to play?

    A: R James
    B: Neto
    C: Bailey

James and Neto. I think Bailey might not start and that swings it. Id have chosen him ahead of Neto otherwise
