FPL Trader – aka Paulius – is currently ranked 37th in our Hall of Fame and wrote an excellent piece about finding value in pre-seasonHere the three-time top 300 finisher outlines his Gameweek 2 plans and reflects on the decision to play the Bench Boost in Gameweek 1.

A lot of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) decisions simply depend on what kind of manager you are. Personally, I wouldn’t call myself a risk-averse manager. I’m not reckless either but I try not to be swayed by effective ownerships or template teams.

On the contrary, my joy in playing FPL is finding the right moments to move differently from the crowd and, at the same time, gain an edge. I feel that using a Bench Boost in Gameweek 1 is exactly that kind of situation.

Why I played the Bench Boost in Gameweek 1

Firstly, a few reasons why this Bench Boost is related to my style of seeking differential moves:

  • It means the Gameweek 1 squad will be different from the template, as there is a need for the manager to spread funds differently to have a stronger bench.
  • Due to this, you will use your Wildcard at a different time than the majority of others. This is a very important aspect. The success of a Wildcard very much depends on timing, as our perception of the best FPL assets changes over time. So if the Gameweek you activate this chip proves to be the ‘right’ one, you will have lower competition when seeking the top FPL ranks.
  • There will be a different chip strategy later in the season, as others will seek to Wildcard right before using a Double Gameweek Bench Boost. You may even use your Free Hit at a different time. Again, being correct with this chip strategy will mean significant rank increases.

The above points are about increasing your variance and, possibly increasing your chances of winning FPL. However, I think it is perfectly viable that a Bench Boost in Gameweek 1 may have been the optimal strategy:

  • A deep bench allows you to have ‘cash cows’ when extra funds are needed.
  • Having 15 active players increases the probability that you’ve included a price-rising bandwagon that increases your team value, as long as you can manage those that decrease.
  • It’s easier to plan chip strategy for later in the season. For example, you may use a Wildcard in the biggest Double Gameweek rather than just beforehand. In my opinion, managers end up focussing too much on maximizing the Bench Boost, whilst sacrificing other opportunities. This chip will usually score you an extra 15-20 points but it also restricts your decision-making freedom, which could ultimately be worth more in points than that Bench Boost.
  • As the World Cup break has provided an extra window for unlimited transfers, many managers were already planning on using an early Wildcard. Therefore carrying an expensive bench wouldn’t be for long.

Furthermore, there is also the strategy of using Bench Boost in Gameweek 1 and then a Wildcard in Gameweek 2. This allows a fun hybrid of Free Hit and Bench Boost but has the disadvantage of deploying a Wildcard with only one week of information. In this case, I preferred to build an opening Bench Boost squad that can also last for at least a few Gameweeks.

Is such a style for you? You’ll need to be mentally prepared for things going badly, as it’s hard to get online sympathy when you use a strategy that is far different from the consensus. Yet this way of playing brings me the most adrenaline and joy.

How did Gameweek 1 go?

My 15-man squad took home 79 points. Without a playing bench, it would have been 71, which is roughly what the template teams scored. I was unlucky with my bench, as the attacking outfielders had a combined expected goal involvement of 0.80, whilst David Raya (£4.5m) conceded twice from an expected goals conceded (xGC) tally of 0.62.

It should have brought at least one return which, in my eyes, would have made it a successful Bench Boost.

My future plans

I have already moved Mason Mount (£8.0m) and Gabriel Jesus (£8.0m) to Andreas Pereira (£4.5m) and Erling Haaland (£11.6m) for a hit. There was no obvious route to Haaland as I did not think he would start the season so strongly – my initial plan was to move Mount to Phil Foden (£8.0m) for Manchester City coverage.

However, it now seems that he will be the main captain option in several upcoming Gameweeks. You need to find opportunities to be different and I think that going without Haaland is not the right one.

Yeah I was thinking it might be a bit expensive but let’s me rotate gross/Aaron’s on and bring in saliva for Tripp on those tough he’s

I usually roll with the cheapest bench possible so I’m not sure

aarson is expensive, good player, but there's options like Bailey at 5 (not saying he is a better pick, but 0.5 cheaper if you need it.

Not convinced with Trippier short term as he has tough games for the next 4 and will give you a selection headache.

Better to bring him in from gw6 onwards where Newcastle have a good run of fixtures

Saliba is a good pick but it feels a waste of a move going for Trippier on a wild card if you're likely to bench him for 2-3 out of the next 4

      Nobody knows.

From past history of Conte and Perisic, he plays for less than 60mins in 50% of the games that he is available. So, there's a high chance that he is subbed before 60mins even if he starts.

    Sanchez

    Salah - Martinelli - Kulusevski
    Darwin - Mitro - (H)aaland

    Ward, Andreas, Dasilva, Nico

    No money left

    1. Is there a better option then Dasilva? I just chucked him in with knowing nothing about him.
    2. Should I keep Sanchez and Cancelo or go James and Ederson?
    3. Should I keep Zinchenko, despite him being a minuets risk. Or just go Gabriel or Saliba? Is Saliba a minutes risk also?

      My opinion

Reed from Fulham looks like their most nailed CM. Fulham want to sign another winger and Andreas is turd so doubt he will be nailed. Willian apparently has agreed to join them as well. Dasilva is fine as well as Neco.

Dasilva is as good as any other 4.5 imo, good xG and on set pieces. Played well.

I don’t see much daylight between Sanch/Canch & Ed/James since Canch could now be up for rotation and James might play the odd game at centre, so too early to tell.

Zinch (maybe overachieved) to Saliba (played out of his skin) or Gabriel is one I’d consider. Zinch may have overachieved but still a gut call based on one week given that overachievers often pull it off for a sustained period (Kulu last season).

thanks, the James, Ederson one is a head scratcher. Someone recommended it here yesterday, and I think it looks good, but Idk why, I just don't like James that much. I think Spurs will score for certain this week, I didn't watch all the Chelsea game last week, but James got a lot of corners, but he also sucked at all of them. Could he lose corners? And yea, his spot.
I'd prefer Chilwell over James tbh, but seems too early for either

Yeah it’s a tricky one. He could definitely lose some set pieces based on that performance and I think the caution is justified PTSD after the injury roulette of the last few seasons. But then there’s those hauls…

      1. Nobody knows. Not enough data yet. Reed from Fulham played for 90mins in the first game, but I have no idea about him as a FPL prospect.
      2. If it were my team, I would try to buy both Cancelo and James and get the Foxes 8.0m keepers. Of the two options you give here, I think James and Ederson will score more than Cancelo and Sanchez over the long term.
      3. Depends. If getting Saliba helps you significantly improve your defense, then yes. Otherwise, Zinchenko is a great pick at that price. For example, you could do Sanchez, Trippier, Zinchenko --> 4.0m, James, Saliba. But again, its your team and its a great team. So, do whatever you think will give you the max points.

Probably Rashford. Also, copying from my previous reply:

I would not bet on Manchester players at this stage. Meaning, if it were my team, I would bench Rashford. But then, I wouldn't have Rashford in my team in the first place.

However, its your team and you picked Rashford for a reason -- meaning that you trust him to return points. Do you think Manchester can score against Brighton? If yes, then I would think Rashford has a good chance of being involved. So, ignore the advice of others and bench whoever you think will score the lowest.

Worth grabbing Tomiyasu tomorrow once he drops to 4.4?

Even if he's benched this gameweek? Could come in nicely in the following weeks.

How sure are you in walks back into that Gooners defence ❓ sounds like it could be profitable on the face of it so I guess it comes down to how much you value a transfer and possible hits that follow because of the original gamble. As always…..good luck with your decision Brains 🙂

    Late one guys.

    Part of my WC boils down to this;

    1) Salah + Walker + Dasilva
    2) Diaz + Cancelo + Saka

With 1) Dasilva makes the bench. Cap can rotate.

With 2) I've got some flexibility. Haaland gets permacap.

Sorry to stink up the page with another RMWCT but need a quick sanity check before I go to bed.

    Sanchez-(Ward)

    TAA-James-Walker-Saliba-(Neco)

    Salah-Kulusevski-Martinelli-(Andreas)-(Dasilva)

    Haaland-Darwin-Jesus

Any obvious omissions minus Cancelo? Can’t seem to fit him in no matter how hard I try. Thanks all!

Would you bench boost if you had Ward, Almiron, Zaha and N Williams on the bleachers?

    Am really tempted

    1. The Iceman
      • 3 Years
      3 years, 4 months ago

Not for me. I expect Ward and Neco Williams to concede.

That leaves you hoping for attacking returns from Zaha who will most likely face a much improved Liverpool at Anfield and Almiron who scores once a season.

Save it for later IMO and good luck!

        He's playing Liverpool.

And is such an annoying random factor FPL player that he could blank against Fulham and win three penalties and score them all.

        Man is an enigma!

    Sanchez Saliba Jesus

This is a similar dilemma I had on my WC. For me it’s option B with Kyle Walker as City defensive cover - I expect Jesus to begin scoring well over the coming fixtures.

The expensive keeper hardly get save points and bonus.

I can understand that you would want Ederson for clean sheets but then you may as well have Walker.

      1. Zimo
        • 7 Years
        3 years, 4 months ago

Sanchez doesn't get those either. The other 4.5s arent gonna get shite in terms of clean sheets. Sanchez ceiling is 130. Ederson is 170. 1m for 40 points seems a good decision to me considering Sanchez could score lower but Ederson won't.

        1. Zimo
          • 7 Years

Same reason we go Trent over Van Dijk. He only ever gets 30 more than him.

        2. FOO FIGHTER
          • 6 Years
          3 years, 4 months ago

          I don't own Sanchez though.

I would rather have that 1m wrapped up in an outfield player. I font want yo waste a transfer on s GK when I might need 1m later on. You are also taking up a 3rd spt for a City outfield player.

I have Cancelo and Trent. If wanted to get Ederson I would have to downgrade one of them as I don't want to change my midfield and forwards.

That extra 1m in the GK spot for an extra 20 to 30 point more than what Sanchez would get seems a bit here and there.

      A - easy for me

      - Ederson a safe 6
      - Zinkchenko should align with Saliba
      - Mitrovic doesn't have the fixtures, you would expect over the next fixtures Jesus will outscore him
