Suspensions

You may have noticed in recent days that the Suspension Tightrope widget on our homepage has been relaunched for the 2022/23 season.

This table keeps track of which Fantasy Premier League (FPL) players are racking up the yellow cards and how close they are to a one-match ban.

There’s nothing to worry about for the vast majority of FPL managers just yet, with just one player – Bournemouth defender Adam Smith (£4.4m) – on four cautions.

So this introductory article is instead more of a guide as to when the cut-off dates are for suspensions and how many bookings our players have to avoid in order to dodge a ban.

WHEN ARE THE CUT-OFF POINTS FOR SUSPENSIONS?

The table above is taken from the Football Association website and details the cut-off points for the various yellow card thresholds.

The one we’re concerned about right now is the five-caution mark, an unwanted target that Premier League players will have to avoid for their team’s first 19 league matches of the season.

That’ll be Gameweek 19 in most cases but of course any postponements, whether they be weather-related or Covid-enforced, would change the situation.

Punishments for yellow card accumulation are competition-specific, whereas suspensions for dismissals cover all competitive matches.

ON FOUR/THREE YELLOW CARDS

Smith has impressively managed to receive four bookings in as many matches, so now has to get through Bournemouth’s next 15 fixtures unscathed if he is to avoid a ban.

The Cherries’ right-back and three others on three yellow cards all have FPL ownerships of less than 0.3% but Fabian Schar (£4.7m) is a notable name above, as he sits in 8.1% of teams and lies joint-ninth among Fantasy defenders for points.

The dubious accolade of most fouls committed in the Premier League goes to Kai Havertz (£7.8m), whose 12 offences have led to two cautions.

Keep your eyes peeled on our Suspension Tightrope widget over the coming weeks and months, as we’ll be updating that after every Gameweek to keep you informed on the latest disciplinary developments.

After Firmino's last match and Darwin set to return - who do we expect to play more frequently up fop for pool?

      Darwin.

Firmino could play no 10 though.

I reckon Klopp will be going 4231.

There is no way he will leave all his attacking options on the bench

Going to be very difficult to defend vs LFC...

Not sure that 4231 will be the default.

There's too many games to put that many attackers on as a default.

        Rest and rotate.

Darwin, Jota, Bobby, Diaz and Salah.

How many and whom would you like to bench?

Usual front three, a fourth can come on if the game needs it.

There's a game every 3 or so days for the next couple of months or so now.

Darwin more than Firmino. Remains to be seen out of Jota and Darwin, but presumably Darwin will win out over the course of the season

I think Darwin won't come back straight into starting XI.
Alternatively we could play a 4231 with Darwin up front and Diaz - Bobby - Salah behind.
Otherwise I can't really see Elliott being left out, he's become quite important in a very short time.

Plus Firmino is perfect at no 10 to help out in midfield. The guy is a workhorse.

Likely to rotate heavily with all the midweek games, so all three will get good minutes

Núñez likely the most though, Firmino is in decline

Would bin Iversen at the earliest opportunity.

Would after next GW, or Villa, drop Foden to Gross/Rodrigo/flavour of the month so you can upgrade Collins or one of the 4.0 defs.

Looks like you're 0.1m short of Iversen/Collins > Sanchez/Perisic, but maybe not the optimal move with xMins & your bench.

      1. Deulofail
        • 10 Years
        3 years, 6 months ago

Not convinced by the Iversen sale yet. Maybe it'll buy me an extra 3-8 points, hard to predict, but then I'm spending a FT and at least 0.6 of the budget every week. Doesn't seem like a great return compared to what I could get spending that FT and 0.6 in defence or attack somewhere down the line. As well as potentially costing me a 4 point hit based on your plans for my team! Still considering it, though, cheers

        1. Deulofail
          • 10 Years

I could do your propose move for Sanchez and Perisic by selling Ward instead of Iversen.

It's debatable. I sold Iversen for Sanchez for a hit, which gave me +7 points (minus the 4 for a hit) immediately.

For context the one move gave me +3 points. Ward has only scored 4 points all season. Sanchez 26...

I now have a better keeper in a better team.

Fair enough. Past is the past though. If I save the FT I could get Darwin back for free next week. If not, I need a -8. That kind of move isn't calculated in the +3 I might gain with sanchez

Also noodling the same A/B myself, not decided on either. Salah was unlucky at the weekend, but he has looked off his game a bit so far this season.

Sterling always had the potential to take off at Chelsea, now they have Fofana I could see James playing at RWB again which would definitely help Sterling’s game especially with Chelsea’s fixtures.

Gundogan is practically playing as a shadow striker and with pep roulette about to start having a more expensive 1st bench might not be a bad contingency shout if Haaland gets fully rested.

Split between two different approaches for GW5 with 2FT and 0.5 ITB.

    Current team:

    Ederson
    James TAA Cancelo Gabriel
    Odegaard Harrison Diaz
    Kane Jesus Haaland
    Bench: Ward, Nico, Andreas, DaSilva

    Which approach is best….

    A) Cancelo & DaSilva to Dalot & Gundogen (play 343)

    B) Gabriel to Dunk GW5, then DaSilva to 5.5 (possibly MGW) in GW6

Downgrade Ederson and free up some cash. Forget the fixture, Ederson has a 6 point ceiling and there are better value keepers that are scoring more points. You have Cancelo for City cover in defence anyway.

Then you'll go into gw6 with 2FT and some cash in the bank. Plenty more options then

Points to consider with Haaland captaincy this GW

    1) City play CL after GW6 (Haaland will definitely start here)

    2) Forest game GW5 is much easier than Villa away GW6

    3) Resting Haaland away to Villa gives him a great rest period for the CL game

    1. Well you know, Triffic

It makes more sense to save Haaland for an away game at Villa. He can be rested mid-week allowing Alvarez a chance after he has impressed off the bench.

    Salah Diaz Martinelli dasilva

I think he’ll do similar again as early form shows.

Cheaper and more nailed than Gundo, but Gundo does have a better goal threat.

I do like Rodrigo too, but I’d trust City a lot more in all types of fixtures.

    Mount > Gundo most likely

I do think Silva xmins is way higher, though. Need to think what I can do with the extra cash.

I went for Bernardo. Played on the right in the last 2 games, created the most chances against Palace too. Guardiola singled him out for praise not only for his ability and work but for his versatility, saying he can play in 4 or 5 positions. Mahrez has looked poor so I'm hoping he keeps playing there, he also barely played in the first 2 games of the season so he shouldn't need a rest too soon

        Yeah very true.

Considering there’s very little to do on the FT front I might do Gundo this week and move to Silva in a couple of weeks once I have more info on rotation.

Have to agree, Bernardo is a good option.

Made the plunge and got rid of Salah

    Sanchez
    Perisic Taa Cancelo
    Kdb Diaz Martinelli Rodrigo
    Toney Haaland Jesus

I did take a -12 to get rid of Salah, Zinchenko and James

    What you think

I wanted Diaz and I had to get rid of 4.5m player so had to get rid of James for a cheapie and downgrade Salah

The 4th transfer was Zinchencko for Perisic

Similar, 2 ft, nothing to do
Play or bench Tripp for andreas
Or punt in Tripp to another, can always get him back next week for good run of fixtures

In fact Cucurella to Walker is a good transfer, Walker is the safer pick, the long term stats yes Man City should start getting clean sheets.

Ok to save here? I don't have enough ITB to do Walker > Perisic which might be a blessing.

    1 FT 0.3 ITB

    Raya
    TAA Cancelo Walker Saliba
    Salah Diaz Martinelli
    Haaland Jesus Toney

    Ward Anreas DaSilva Neco

Pretty boring all having the same teams and rolling transfers week after week.

Hope things get a shake up soon. Maybe Pool’s fixture swing in a few weeks is worth jumping off Salah and co and aiming for some differentials.

It’s boring if you decide it to be.

Everyone had good teams on paper.

It’s about being proactive. I’ve seen so many teams have double Pool defence, double City defence, and double Chelse defence. It isn’t really working too much.

But each week it’s the same “give them one more week”

Others, I’ve seen with Diaz/Sterling/Rodrigo/Grob and the Brighton defenders and are killing it.

I've kept faith in differentials like Saka and Neto. In the meanwhile templatish Martinelli, Rodrigo and Gross absolutely killed it. I still haven't figured it out yet when a knee-jerk reaction will turn out okay and when not.

How to improve this lot with 2FT and £1.5 ITB

    Sanchez
    TAA | Cancelo | James | Saliba
    Salah | Martinelli | Diaz | Aaronsen
    Jesus | Haaland

      Not much to do.

Maybe downgrade Cancelo to Walker. He's not worth 7m in this inverted role Pep has him in this season

Harrison for Aaronson? Bit sideways, but really like Harrisons stats. Similar to Groß before I bought him 2 GWs ago

    TAA Zinchenko Walker

    Salah Martinelli GroB Andreas

    Haaland Kane Jesus

    Subs: Iversen, Trippier Bailey Neco
