Fantasy Football Scout community writer Greyhead returns for the 2022/23 season with his series of articles analysing the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) transfers and strategies of some noted Fantasy managers, from serial top 10k finishers to well-known faces.

The Great and The Good this season are the BlackBox pair of Mark Sutherns and Az, Scouts Joe LepperTom FreemanNeale Rigg, Geoff Dance, Pro Pundts PrasZophar and FPL Harry,  FPL “celebrities” Magnus CarlsenFPL GeneralLTFPL AndyBen Crellin, from the Hall of Fame, Fabio BorgesFPL MatthewFinn Sollie and Tom Stephenson and of course last year’s mini-league winner and overall no.2 Suvansh.

“Viewers of a nervous disposition may wish to look away now”

Brutal! In a true video nasty, a couple of the members of The Great and The Good, both non-Haaland owners, decided it was a good idea to do the Match of the Day challenge and watch their Gameweek 4 unfold with thousands watching them.

Spoiler alert: it wasn’t.

Aside the sadistic pleasure of watching Mark and Az go through this emotional torture, others were punished this week as well, especially Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.5m) sellers.

The majority of us suffered some form of pain as the popular armband selection Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) managed to avoid any returns in the 9-0 thrashing of Bournemouth.

OVERALL PERFORMANCE

Fabio Borges continues to glide gracefully up the ranks to just outside the top 100,000: he maintains top position amongst The Great and The Good with the highest score of the week, 83 points. He even decided to burn his transfer this week, proving that doing nothing appears to be the best tactic right now.

Erling Haaland, Trent and Luis Diaz (£8.0m) were all present and correct plus his goalkeeping pick of Robert Sanchez (£4.6m) is proving a masterful move, Brighton have only conceded one goal in the last four Gameweeks and have a lofty position in the fixture ticker.

Also, it’s worth highlighting Suvansh, who proved you can be non-Salah and be successful: he scored 78 points with Raheem Sterling (£9.9m), a useful differential.

learning-from-the-great-and-the-good-22-23-gameweek-4 1

WILDCARD

There were two early Wildcards this week, with Mr Sutherns’ overhaul the most publicized and scrutinized.

Mark Sutherns

His squad depth is strong, almost superhuman, with rotation on the horizon and he looks to prefer the safety this provides knowing that there will be a few benched points along the way.

As for his picks, he has offloaded Joao Cancelo (£7.0m), Bukayo Saka (£8.0m) and out-of-form Son Heung-Min (£12.0m), preferring the shiny new toys of Ivan Toney (£7.0m), Rodrigo (£6.5m) and Aleksandar Mitrovic (£6.7m), who scored again this week and who I suspect soon will become essential.

He has gambled on Ivan Perisic (£5.5m) and his potential reduced minutes: the Spurs defender/wandering wingback could have had an assist to add to his clean sheet if Harry Kane (£11.5) had not faced penalty stopper extraordinaire Dean Henderson (£4.5m) this Sunday. I wonder whether, watching from City Ground stadium, Mr Sutherns cheered or cursed this second spot-kick save of the season from the Forest keeper.

Mark was slightly unlucky to sell Haaland and Diaz on a week that they outscored Kevin De Bruyne (£12.0m) and Salah but remember a Wildcard can’t be judged just on a week, even if it’s televised.

Full moves are below:-

  • IN – Raya, Iversen, Perisic, Rodrigo, De Bruyne, Salah, Jesus, Mitrovic
  • OUT – Ward, Ramsdale, Cancelo, Saka, Diaz, Son, Haaland, Archer
Geoff Dance

The Canadian Kingpin was the other one to move early. He has abandoned the double City defence, which certainly seems to have been impacted by injury, and is the first manager to revert to 3-4-3 – the once go-to formation of The Great and The Good.

He has also gone for squad depth: Sanchez is a wise move and Kieran Trippier (£5.1m) has shown consistency and looks good value with fixtures improving after Gameweek 5, but I am still trying to work out whether Marcus Rashford (£6.3m) is a move of head or heart for the United-supporting Canuck.

  • IN – Sanchez, Perisic, Trippier, Saliba, Rodrigo, Rashford, Toney
  • OUT – Iversen, Dias, Cucurella, Cancelo, Bailey, Kulusevski, Archer

TRANSFERS

  • Az – None
  • LTFPL Andy – None
  • Ben Crellin – None
  • Fabio Borges – None
  • Finn Sollie – Sanchez (Iversen)
  • FPL Harry – None
  • Joe Lepper – None
  • Geoff Dance – Wildcard
  • FPL General – Rodrigo, Saliba, Ederson (Iverson, Mount, Williams)
  • Magnus Carlsen – None
  • Mark Sutherns – Wildcard
  • FPL Matthew – None
  • Neale Rigg – Stansfield (Archer)
  • Pras – None
  • Suvansh – Dunk (Williams)
  • Tom Freeman – Dunk (Williams)
  • Tom Stephenson – Murphy (Bailey)
  • Zophar – None

Thank goodness for FPL General, whose minus four saved us from a series of beige transfers, Neale’s switch from Cameron Archer (£4.5m) to Jay Stansfield (£4.5m) a particular lowlight.

General took a hit to bring in the on-form William Saliba (£4.6m), Rodrigo (£6.5m) will do better when not up against the stingy Brighton defence and Ederson (£5.5m) has to be seen as upgrade on the failed double £4.0m keeper experiment.

TEMPLATE

The template for The Great and The Good is as follows, with the number in brackets showing how many teams in which they appear:-

  • Ward (16), Ramsdale (7)
  • Alexander-Arnold (18), James (18), Cancelo (16), Cucurella (8), Perisic (5)
  • Martinelli (18), Andreas (18), Salah (17), Luis Diaz (8), Reed (8)
  • Jesus (18), Haaland (16), Archer (10)

With Mark finally relenting on Mo, that means it’s only Suvansh who doesn’t own him, Gabriel Jesus (£8.2m) joins the 100% gang while faith in Joao Cancelo (£7.0m) falters as he falls out of that exclusive list.

SEASON STATS

learning-from-the-great-and-the-good-22-23-gameweek-4

A quick look at the season stats gives Az at least something to be cheerful about as he tops the captaincy points. Suvansh has been the most aggressive with five transfers and a minus eight while Finn Sollie and Mark have been the money chasers with the highest team value of £101.3m.

CONCLUSION

We seem to be approaching a fork in the road with the choice of doing nothing, burning your transfer or instead throwing caution to the wind, playing your Wildcard and trying to break the cycle.

The conservative optimal branch of our FPL community appears to be winning the day so far, but surely a maverick will step up to take on the system. My only word of advice is to make sure it’s not televised.

Anyway, that’s all from me for and remember don’t have nightmares.

Brentford spend £7,346,000 less on player salaries than Bournemouth. They have the lowest wage bill in the league.

Moneyball in action. Data science works.

Tough one, have similar options. Haaland obvious choice if he starts, though unlikely to start going by Pep. Cancelo doesn't seem to be attacking as much.

thing about Haaland though is that he only needs to come on last 10 mins to get 2 goals / 3 bps

The key to this season will be patience .. if/when the popular template players will get benched/blank 2 games in a row and their price begins to fall people will jump onto the plethora of other options available and will then rinse and repeat the kneejerk there.. and the template we currently own will become differential by itself

Can already see it happening as player ownership fatigue and boredom is setting in

It could be the opposite. People getting too comfortable entrenched in the template. There are gains to be made from brave managers willing to stick their neck out.

The guy who won FPL last year won because he got rid of Salah where a lot of managers ahead of him did not dare to.

3 seasons ago I was in the top 10K after GW3. I thought it would be plain sailing. I didn't WC/make transfers aggressively enough and gave my lead away and finished 20K+. Still one of my most 'disappointing' seasons considering how well I started. From that point on, I'd vowed I'd rather take a shot and miss than play too safe and not reach for the heights.

Last season I was in the top 500 after 3 GWs. Still doing well until about GW12 when I took my eye off the ball due to - ironically - an emergency dash to England. It does require patience, for 38 GWs straight. Unfortunately, right now, I'm about to hit the airport to fly over to England for my sister's funeral. I'll be out of action through GWs5-6. That might be enough to see off my whole season.

    D. Save (2fts & zero in bank)

Which 4.5 FWD do people think is least likely to fall in price?

Stansfield who might play a bit or Saydee/Ferguson who have only just been added and presumably no one will buy at all.

Alvarez is 6.2. He will feature with Haaland's reduced minutes.

Then Alvarez will be on your bench eating away your budget.

Alvarez has averaged 19 minutes in his 3 games. I expect him to average between 30 to 40 minutes per game he plays which will be when City have CL matches.

For that reason I wouldn't get in Alvarez becase you will be wasting your funds which can be used for upgrades.

They both play Forest in the next 3 weeks and they both have nice fixtures. Cancelo looking less threatening going forward at the minute and Bamford nearing a return for Leeds so both look good on paper but the reality might be slightly underwhelming. I think I would go for Cancelo though.

27% ownership, not quite template. Infact he is an exciting pick if you captain him

But you don’t know which City mid due to rotation and goal spread which is more frustrating than owning Diaz.

I personally think he's one of the game's most underrated assets, even on a rock bottom side, he's still churning out returns most weeks with added potential of double digits

that's my dilemma for this week; think it's only a slight strain but don't want to start him if he's only gonna get last 10 mins. Also he may be on his way out so another reason he doesn't play

    morning gents,

Just a sanity check for midweek plan. No transfers used as yet.....
    Raya
    Taa - James - Cancelo
    Salah (V) - Da Silva - Martinelli - Rodrigo
    Haaland (C) - Jesus

    Bench;
    Iversen - Saint-Max - N. Williams - Mbete (bench fodder)

Need to see what the crack is with ASM as he limped off at the weekend.... What we saying?
Was tempted with Diaz for Salah and Toney for Kane.....

Seems okay, go for it I guess! Only problem is Toney does have a good chance of hauling which won't make your week very enjoyable if Kane blanks.

    Hi all,

Currently have Trent, James and Neco.
Looking to spend up to 10.9m on the last 2 defender slots.

In budget (and in my consideration) are

    1) Perisic
    2) Dias
    3) Cucu
    4) Saliba
    5) Gabriel
    6) Trippier

I can't have both Arsenal defenders. Gut feel is Perisic and one other, but which 2 would you pick from this lot?

I'd want some City coverage so from your list that means Dias and Saliba

Walker + Perisic? Need some City representation either way.

So unless you are financed as a club to pour 50-75 million into Premier League survival, such is the cost of players and wages that you're better not getting promoted out of the Championship and falling further behind, year on year?

We know it's because of what Parker said, rather than the win over Villa and losses to Man City, Arsenal and Liverpool.

Clearly, other than the manager, not much will change at Bournemouth.

It is a structural problem in the game.

The Championship is 20 times the cost base of League 1 as well.

How are you falling further behind by getting promoted... All the clubs that get relegated from the PL become favorites for promotion the next year such is the financial benefit of being in the PL. I would gladly take yo-yo club status right now (Blackburn fan) over being stuck in the Championship year after year.

I meant, falling further behind by not getting promoted.

As in difficult to bridge the gap and the gap grows bigger, year on year.

        A bit of a Catch 22 situation.

Income increases massively when teams get promoted to PL, so in theory they should have a significant amount of funds to improve their squads and compete to a certain degree. The reason this doesn't happen in practice for some clubs is either due to greedy owners or more often due to existing high debts stemming from being poorly managed in previous years, at least in terms of financial performance.

In addition, there is a significant amount of parachute payments to relegated teams, so even if they are certain to be relegated like in Bournemouth's case, it's still better to be promoted and relegated than to remain in Championship, even if we are speaking purely from a financial perspective.

    2FTs & 0.5itb
    Sanchez
    James, Cancelo, TAA, Trippier, Perisic
    Salah, Diaz, Martinelli
    Haaland, Jesus

    Ward, Dasilva, Andreas, Archer

Thinking Dasilva to March or Xhaka to get more bench options to cover possible rests for Trippier and Perisic. Or burn the transfer?

I think the problem with Perisic is that he either starts or gets a cameo (usually 1 pointer). So if you really want Perisic you likely have to start him every game and pray he starts as its unlikely he doesnt come up at all. I like Dasilva to March though.

Just go Haaland, playing through the middle with the service he gets against Forest who can’t defend. Newcastle are good at the back these days and don’t ship a lot of goals.

    Ramsdale

    Ward, Trippier, Dasilva, Neco

    Mendy (Ward)
    Robbo James White Dias Cancelo
    Salah Mount Martinelli (Andreas DaSilva)
    Jesus Kane (Archer)

    2FT, 0.2£ ITB

Would you get Perisic or get rid of Mendy/Mount?

Pep being Pep, more likely to rotate than Klopp. Also Pep promised Haaland starts once per week. Although with Tsimikas giving two assist v Bournemouth Robertson indeed has some rotation risk we might not be aware of.

          Veltman is injured no?

Besides that, although it's true Veltman gets more bonus, most of the time its 1 or 2 more points. A goal gives you 6 points. Though defenders scoring goals can be vv random and you should always go by your gut.

Case in point: Went Gabriel over Saliba for GW3 because of supposed higher threat, Saliba ended up scoring that week (massive 14 pointer). Though least Gabriel scored this week 🙂

Was Mount subbed on Saturday at H?T because Gallagher's Red card or just because he was playing poorly again, he is down to 7.7 now and is a quality player, can see a haul coming soon if he keeps his placed, he did very well last year away v saints...

Personally giving Cancelo a bit more time, I want a city defender and wouldn't take that for a -4. The other 3 changes look reasonable, just check if you can structure it without losing points, maybe leave Mendy for this GW as Chelsea play Southampton
