BRIEF ‘HOW TO PLAY’

To summarise the game in one sentence: UCL Fantasy managers get €100m to spend on a squad of 15 players, who earn points based on their on-field performances in the Champions League.

Anyone who has played Fantasy Premier League will have no trouble picking the game up, as many of the rules are exactly the same or very similar:

  • An initial budget of €100m
  • Pick a squad of 15 players
  • No more than three players from each club (that threshold rises once the knockout stages begin)
  • Select a starting XI in a valid formation for every ‘matchday’ (the UCL equivalent of a ‘Gameweek’, which incorporates both the Tuesday and Wednesday fixtures)
  • Select a captain who earns double points
  • Make free transfers between matchdays

Those are the fundamentals but there are one or two quirks of the game that require a bit of explaining, which we will cover in our forthcoming ‘How to Play’ guide.

Zaha is the man in form and penalty-taker. If Palace will score against tougher teams, he's likely to be involved.

Scan for Rodrigo today apparently. Sounds very much like a dislocated shoulder. Best case scenario, 2-3 weeks out. Worst case scenario, 5-7 weeks out. James I believe is illness rather than injury so would hope he’ll be back next GW.

That’s a great position though, who comes off your bench for James?

Fofana is a great price at 4.4 but, until Chelsea start stringing some clean sheets together, I’m only interested in James there given that there are so many other good defenders out there.

Had James from the off regardless of Chelsea defensive solidity as he’s shown he’s a great attacking asset, clean sheets just a bonus. Fofana still one to monitor at that price, though

Fofana should improve James' CS prospects and allow him to play RWB again - he's the main beneficiary from a fantasy perspective.

Indeed. I like the move for that reason too, then Fofana might become a double up option eventually

hasn't he been bought for the purposes of restoring formations in defence and getting clean sheets?

    Sanchez
    TAA, Trippier, Perisic
    Rodrigo, Salah, Martinelli, Diaz
    Toney, Jesus, Haaland
(Ward, Neco, Saliba, Andreas) 0.2ITB 2FT

Keep faith in Toney. Or, jump on the Mitro train?

    a) Rod, Tone > Zaha, Mitro
    b) Rod > Gross (0.8 & FT for Perisic to James, or whatever later on)
    c) something else (your suggestion)

Mitro fixtures are pretty horrendous so I’m waiting it out. But then again, he does seem to be able to score against anyone so who knows.

It's a toughie. Mitro allows for Zaha. Both are thorns in my mini-league side. Wouldn't be surprised if he scored against Spurs & Chelsea.

On the other side, how has Toney looked? Hearing about lots of near-misses. Are his underlying stats decent?

Same for Gross. Is he on a hot streak. Or, is he likely to continue current form?

Wait on news for Rodrigo & James.

Perhaps Toney to Mitro for funds.

    GW2 Bruno Guimarães > Martinelli
    GW3 Cash > Cucurella
    GW4 Bailey > Dasilva
    GW5 Neto > Aaronson

Likely to do Dasilva > Andreas soon so I wasted that transfer in GW4 😆

What’s not to like about Martinelli? Aaronson is good for the 5.5 mark. Dasilva or Andreas for 4.5. Pickford > Iversen so I can add to my funds already ITB as Ward is garbage anyway. Cucurella has been disappointing because of Chelsea’s poor start defensively but he isn’t terrible.

I think Haaland scores more in 60/70, the way he's playing. Pep's quotes make it seem likely he starts.

I don't think Haaland starts tonight, rather to away to Villa.

But if he starts vs Forest, he will be benched early because of Villa away.

Here, Newcastle weakened team and worry on mins for Haland swung it. Forest at home felt a great game to give Alvarez a start.

Own Haaland at least so would need to be another big variance like last gw to really hurt

No mention of Trossard as a Rodrigo replacement, outscored Gross the last couple of seasons.

Not hard to outscore Gross last couple of seasons. He's got a more attacking role, incomparable.

That's a good shout and Maupay could improve his FPL prospects. Sometimes though I'd like to shake him, can be a bit inconsistent and not involved enough in some games.

I think you’re being unjustifiable negative.

      What will be will be.

Haaland is a great great great option this week. If it doesn’t work, you go again.

Surprised Salah owners aren’t going with him though, he’s 13m playing against Newcastle with key injuries!

rodrigo to (up to 6.7 with no hit)

    A harrison
    B JWP
    C ASM (assuming fit)
    D lingard
    E zaha for a hit (-4)

In the same boat, but can only afford 6.3 so I'll probably just go A, but would prefer C if I had the funds (if fit).

    Kane - Haaland (v) - Jesus

    Iversen, Trippier, DaSilva, Neco

0 FT, 0 ITB, just snuck inside the first 3M rank

If you enjoy wife jokes and innuendos, you might also enjoy Jim Davidson in Boobs in the Wood, a VHS I convinced my parents to buy from WHSmith as a gift for my grandmother when I was 6 years old

Sadly the Jim Davidson humour is 'not tolerated' in 2022. Chubby Brown included too. So comedians need to be a bit smarter when sneering. It's hard to be funny when less and less people have a sense of humour.

You need two irreverent Meath men for that!
