We at Fantasy Football Scout are saddened by the passing of Queen Elizabeth II.

We’re aware that not all of you will be affected by the events in the United Kingdom on Thursday afternoon but as a mark of respect for those who are, we will be suspending our content for the time being.

Understandably, there is a great deal of uncertainty over the immediate sporting schedule and we will also be awaiting further guidance from the Premier League on whether (or when) this weekend’s planned fixtures will take place.

I would consider myself something of a royalist and certainly wasn’t one of the people cheering yesterday, but even I find this reaction at every level of the media completely bonkers. Why on earth is fantasy football scout postponing content?

Yes. TV companies, press, sporting authorities, FFS have gone way over the top. A funeral for those who actually knew her and a two-minute silence for the rest of us would be more than enough IMO.

I agree. I’m moved by the passing of the Queen, it’s a huge event, but it’s not the only topic of conversation.

Yes, there must be other newsworthy events taking place but you wouldn't know it if you were watching Breakfast TV this morning even the local news was just the queen and weather.

I understood why Sky Sports News switched to Queen coverage last night but don't know why they were continuing with it this morning? If you want to get news on the Queen, there are plenty of outlets for it without hijacking other parts of the media.

I think they have no choice. They may have to do that as part of broadcasting rules that were put in place for this kind of situation.

TV programs have to be rescheduled too because certain programs cannot now be shown for the next 10 days or so.

If you're of a sane mind, would totally agree with you mate. To be told to be sad (mourn) for 10 days is frankly something from another time and age. The world goes on right, and she would not want the working 'man' to have his football cancelled, she just wasn't that type of person. A lovely 2 min round of applause at every footy ground this weekend would be perfect.

I'm not Briton and I probably have a different perspective (I consider the institution of monarchy to be a feudal obsolescence), but should everything in the UK is going to look like it has been since yesterday for the next 10 days?

      1. AIRMILES

I'm not a royalist by any means, but the Queen was quite special. She has been really quite remarkable in performing her duties pretty much immaculately for 70 years. And I say I'm not a royalist, but I also wouldn't vote to get rid of them, as there are literally tens of millions of people in the UK whose sense of British identity is largely tied up in the royal family. That said, this wall to wall blanket coverage is just too much. And the university where I work has said our institution will close on the National Day of Mourning (whenever that is). I won't complain about a day off work, but I don't think it's necessary. There are ways of being respectful and marking the occasion adequately without going full mental.

I understand your (and everyone else's) frustration. Media outlets like FFS have to suspend content - the risk/reward ratio is simply too high for them to do anything else. Risk - you are accused of going on with your content during a time of national mourning and are attacked as such. Reward - nothing more than an average day.

It took a really long time after Diana. The first day after her death was basically a media blackout, all radio was just playing sad songs and TV was wall to wall Diana coverage. And that was essentially before 24h rolling news (I think Sky News was probably the only one at the time).

I was living in Japan in 2011 when there was the massive earthquake. I remember about 5-6000 people were confirmed dead but many more than that (probably about 15000) were missing. I remember very clearly there was no advertising on TV for at least a week - they just repeated the same advert that said "look after each other". No advertising company wanted to be the first to break the period of mourning.

So yeah, I'm not saying it's right or wrong for outlets like FFS to suspend regular content, but I think it's good to have some insight into why they, SSN, the PL and everyone else is doing so, otherwise you will drive yourself potty with frustration.

But as you point out, we do now have 24 hour news channels. That's, arguably, an appropriate platform for 24 hour grief. I don't think it needs to span ALL platforms.

At the end of the day you can’t enforce grief. If your channel isn’t posting people are going to be somewhere else. If the PL games aren’t on people are going to be watching Netflix etc. It’s all posturing

I don't like the Royal Family at all and am not in mourning but I think they should be postponed because

1 my team is in a mess this gw
2 it would hinder my rivals who have wildcarded
3 The Brighton and Palace owners won't even get the easy points this gw with both playing very poor teams

I think it's fair to postpone this gw

If I were the king and I'd died, I'd probably have wanted for the games to go on and all the teams throughout the nation give me a tribute at the beginning of each game. Would be a better send off than a mourning and a no show. But different strokes for different folks I guess.

Don't see the need to cancel this GW's fixtures personally they could pay their respects by doing a two minutes before kick-off but given the OTT reaction of other authorities and organisations, I wouldn't be at all surprised if the PL is suspended until after the Queen's funeral.

Don't know if anyone was mentioning this before, but to all people who used their WC this week, potential postponement of next 2 GWs doesn't need to be a bad thing.

If the deadlines stay the same, we can load our tems with players that are going up in price and loose bad performing players who are falling in price, and the template doing badly last week is an advatage to this.

So we can get the price rises for next 3 deadlines beacuse people will do transfers based on last gameweek and there is a huge oportunity to increse team value.

For example, i wildcarded this week and losed Ramsdale for Pope. If we get 3 deadlines with no games i would expect Ramsdale to fall 0.2 or 0.3 in value and Pope to increase 0.4 or 0.5, so thats around 0.7m gaing on only 1 player.

Trippier, Rashford, Toney, Mitro could all rise 0.5 over those 3 deadlines and we could get rid of players who have bad fixuters incoming and will fall in price like Salah and Jesus.

    1. Tinkermania
      • 6 Years

If the deadlines stay the same, your wildcard deadline is up in just over 24hrs, not 3 weeks.

      1. kamdaraji
        • 16 Years

So you have effectively wasted your wildcard if gameweek 7 matches don't go ahead?

I think you will find that transfer activity over postponed gameweeks will be very low and there will be hardly any price rises. That is what happened when gameweeks were cancelled during Covid

      • 11 Years
      3 years, 6 months ago

I not sure if you understood me correctly...we get info today when will the FPL will continue, lets say its GW9. You set your team for that GW and fill you team with players you want and are rising in price (Pope, Trip, Mitro, Toney etc) and lose players who have bad fixtures from that GW like Salah and Jesus.

Also you can have 2 FT at the beggining of GW9 so you can bring back a player or two who you ditched because they are falling in price but you want them.

Team value gaind by this could be huge.

When there was covid postponements, deadline stayed the same just there was no games.

So if it stays like that, tomorow at 11.00h we get deadline, we all get 1 free transfer and there are no games.

If the next GW is also canceled, we get 1 free transfer deadline 1,5h before scheduled first game and the games do not happen.

After every deadline all players can again fall/rise by 0.3 cuz its new GW

Yeah I think you’re right… if I WCed already I’d have been annoyed initially, but provided there is clear info before the deadline you can effectively use it as a GW9 WC with a couple of FTs build in after you hit submit. Make lemonade out of the lemons you’ve been dealt.

The Unions have cancelled their strike action.

The Premier League will likely cancel and the season could be extended into June.

I'd have thought that Saturday events would be preferable to Sunday and to postpone closer to the funeral rather than twice would be one approach.

horse racing was suspended yesterday and today but likely resumes tomorrow.

I think there's huge pressure to observe it but this didn't happen for King George. The right thing may be to play football this weekend and postpone next.

Afterall, football is good at bringing people together to publicly pay their respects too.

I suspect the decision on horseracing will be made very soon. If the horseracing, her favourite sport, isn't cancelled, I can't see the PL being cancelled.

They cancelled tonight's games, so to me it would make no sense to have done that and then allow the rest of this weekend's schedule to go on.

Also, unlikely to have games next weekend as funeral probably will be on Monday, so they would still have to reschedule games.

We will find out soon enough, but a suspension of the Football League program would seem to be appropriate on this occasion, especially as we, as a nation, are apparently now in an official period of mourning (it was nice of them to let us know that).

I'll probably be wrong, but that's just my thoughts on what may happen.

I think everyone is entitled to feel however they feel about the Queen's death. Some folk will be devastated, others might feel nothing at all. I think when the media describe everyone as "the British people" and tell us how we should feel as though we are one body its both a huge over simplification and can make people feel excluded if they don't toe the line.

I get the frustration but the wider point is this is an end of an era as much as the death of a single person (as sad as that is).

It’s a huge public / state moment for a country which royalty and the queen in particular is / was a strong part of the national identity.

Her passing is a unique moment in the history of a country. Everything slowing down for a week or so is fair enough and was always going to happen. I doubt it’ll happen again as Charles has no where near the same popularity, much of the commonwealth will remove the crown link now and the royals will fade into the background like they have in many other European countries.

I’m not even bothered by who’s next (Charles) but the Queen has been a constant in all our lives and so much will need to be changed..
          Notes, coins, stamps, anthems…

No, no, no. Let's break that down.

            1) The Queen has been a constant in all our lives. Yeah, she's always been there, but she hasn't affected my life choices in any way at all. Whether it's a Queen or King on the throne (or no monarchy whatsoever) it won't affect me going to do my day job / go shopping / watch movies etc. OK, I'm sure there are people who's life *will* be affected by the change, but this will be a very small percentage of people.

            2) "So much" will need to be changed. Not what you've suggested. Notes and coins are effectively the same thing - money - and while we'll soon(ish) be getting a picture of Charles on them, nothing will change with regards what's already in our pockets / wallets. The notes / coins with the Queen's face on them will still be legal tender for *years* to come. Same with stamps. No change while they roll out new stamps with Charles' face on. And as for the anthems... well... I mean, that huge change from the word "Queen" to "King" is going to be enormous. And bear in mind the tune / music won't actually be changing at all...

Even passports will still be valid until they expire.

Happy to be corrected on the above, but, come on, it's a sad, sad day but life will move on with little change to most people's normal daily grind.

Most major sports with fixtures this weekend are now expected on a call with the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport by 9.30am, reports our Sports Correspondent Tom Morgan.

Senior figures say sports are still awaiting formal guidance from Government on a coordinated approach.

However, there is doubt there will be any definitive direction from ministers on the call.

Instead, the likes of football, rugby and the Great North Run are expecting to make their own decisions.

Prior to the Queen's death, Premier League clubs had already been due to meet to discuss the fan-led review and the so-called "New Deal" of financial support for the lower tiers.

Wouldn't be that bizarre. I'm sure the players and the clubs will say they can continue because they don't have time to rearrange the fixtures later but if it's dictated by the Premier League/FA, they'll have no choice. Uefa won't care so no reason why the clubs wouldn't oblige.

It's strange what they think should and shouldn't be stopped.

Some people have flights, hotels etc booked for weeks/months to come and see the games. Cancelling them on such short notice would put a lot of people in a bad spot.

Why stop at pro sport? Why not cancel everything and just sit at home for 10 days? This is a genuine question for those that want the games cancelled.

Why suspend content here? Do they refund paying customers a % of the monthly fee for the days they took off?

I do hope some calmer heads take a hard look at themselves and allow reason and logic to win out.
