With no Premier League football over the most recent weekend, fans showing withdrawal symptoms will surely be watching the imminent Champions League coverage in midweek.

Make sure you do so with Fanslide, the fast-growing, real-time Fantasy game that is ideal for those wanting to both watch football, take on other managers, and win prizes – of which there are three chances throughout the Tuesday and Wednesday matches.

In case you’re new to Fanslide, it’s completely free to download and play. All you need to do is choose three players at the time you think they’ll pick up the most points (more of which below).

We’re playing it ourselves this season – so get involved to show us up and once again prove that the punters know better than the pundits!

Fanslide: Don’t just watch the game, PLAY the game!

How to play Fanslide

You can select three players at any one time, ‘sliding’ them into slots for single, double or treble points when you think they’re about to have an impact on the match.

Slides must be managed wisely though, with each player only available for a maximum of 20 minutes alongside an ability to remove them early to use their remaining time later. Your first three slides of each half are free, the rest will cost two points unless it’s due to time expiry.

Compared to FPL, there are loads more ways to win or lose points. Alongside the usual reward of goals (20 points), penalty saves (15) and assists, they are also given for actions such as defensive blocks, winning a tackle, having a shot on target and keeping a 20-minute clean sheet.

However, points are deducted for defensive errors, conceding free-kicks and being caught offside, as well as the usual bookings, red cards and own goals.

Full rules are here.

Live Fanslide matches

Tuesday 5:45pmUCL: Sporting CP v Tottenham (BT Sport)
Tuesday 8:00pmUCL: Liverpool v Ajax (BT Sport)
Wednesday 8:00pmUCL: Manchester City v Dortmund (BT Sport)
Thursday 5:45pmUEL: Sheriff v Manchester United (BT Sport)
Kick-off times are BST

Both the Liverpool and Man City matches have a £100 freeroll prize pool, which costs nothing to enter.

Early goals

Using data from Soccer Stats, we can look at the goal times of last season’s Champions League group stages and see whether starting with three defenders is a valid tactic if you anticipate the match to start slowly. This, therefore, leads to clean sheets by their 20th-minute expiry.

During the 96 group games of 2021/22, there were more goals in the second half (55.8%) than in the first (44.2%). On average, a first would arrive in the 29th minute, with only 27.6% taking place in the first third of the 90 minutes.

Teams such as Ajax, Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain tended to start strongly, each netting five times in the opening 20 minutes, whilst Club Brugge (seven), Young Boys (five) and Atletico Madrid (four) conceded the most.

Stretch this out to the first 30 minutes and we can start estimating which of last season’s teams could replicate their busy or quiet beginnings.

The three sides to score most often in the opening 30 minutes all participate in Fanslide’s midweek matches. Liverpool and Ajax face each other at Anfield, so it might be wise to start with attacking talent in the three slots.

Meanwhile, Pep Guardiola will want his Manchester City line-up to quickly put Dortmund away so that early substitutions can take place. Perhaps Erling Haaland scores against his former club – it’s not like he’s struggling right now.

How to get involved

2FT. Salah & Sanchez > KDB & Pope the best shout? Rest of the team is

Been really poor every time I've seen him, hardly been involved in anything, but since he scored a pen in an ECL game he's suddenly one of the most popular picks. 1 shot on target in 6 games and xGI of 1.1

I think it's people looking at fixtures and ignoring everything else, and probably just being unsure what to do with leftover money. You can just keep it itb for later on and go for someone with better form and underlyings but try telling people that!

Bailey vs Andreas for those on WC is a tough dilemma.
I would still pick Andreas because of his rotation with Trippier (he fills in perfectly in gws 11 and 13).
Maybe both could be an option too if you going threemium and play 4-3-3 with a 4th budget def who can rotate with Bailey

Neither, but the alternative is to go Isak/Toney and upgrade Bailey or Andreas - most likely Sinistierra or Antony which leaves 2M ITB for a defender I'll never play.

          It makes sense.

Another consideration is that a premium can be easily downgraded if needed, but 2 or 3 mid-priced players can't be upgraded without hits etc.

Has a good team around him and has looked decent, had a 1v1 saved against Palace. Guimaraes should be back soon as well as ASM so should have plenty of support. I'm actually not as keen on Toney as others but recency bias is certainly a big factor for most, his hattrick was great but was a bit of a freak occurrence in it's entirety. Still haven't decided whether I'm keeping Jesus past Brentford so keeping an eye on all of these options to go alongside Mitrovic and Haaland. I do think the games against bigger teams may suit him but it is a useful spot and not the best time for triple Arsenal

Just did Robbo to Trippier. For a hit, should I make changes to my team? Planning to WC next GW. 0 FT, 1.7 ITB.

    Raya
    Trippier Botman Neco Cancelo
    Martinelli KDB Andreas
    Kane Jesus Toney

    Ward James Diaz Groß

Raya -> Pope? Or is 3 Toon def too risky? Or do I need a playing bench?

Rate my tentative plan. Reduces top team players against top teams without using a WC and then not being able to get top team players back.

    1FT. 0.1 ITB.

    Ward (Iversen)
    Trippier Neco Patterson (Trent James)
    KDB Odegaard Martinelli Andreas (Diaz)
    Haaland Jesus (Darwin)

    GW8: Darwin + Diaz > Mitrovic + Paqueta/ASM
    GW9: Odegaard > Sterling (ARS vs TOT)x2
    GW10: Trent > Chelsea (ARS vs LIV)x2
GW11: KDB > Maddison (MCI vs LIV)
    GW12: Jesus > Isak/Vardy/Darwin (MCI vs ARS)x2
    GW13: WC

Thanks. But that would spoil the plan, as I would then have Cancelo, and so 2 more fixtures against top teams before WC. Neco and Patterson have good enough fixtures to roll the dice this week imo. Such low prices allow other transfers elwhere, and getting Cancelo would be a spanner in that too.

You pick players with a 6-game horizon but you can't make plans more than 2-3 GWs ahead. Everything changes very quickly.

          1. Deulofail
            • 10 Years
            3 years, 7 months ago

Sigh. The exact players could be different. But the plan shows me that I can remove up to 7/14 poor fixtures (against top teams) before a WC, before WCing these top team players back in. There are plenty of alternative variations given the potentially emerging players with good fixtures that everyone else is already jumping to on a WC this or next week out of faith.

However, I can asses and get Paqueta, Bowen, ASM, Maddison or someone else instead of Sterling in GW9 or Maddison in GW11. I could get a different defender over one of the Chelsea players. Or if there's an injury, I could bench Trent or take a hit, which is something to factor into the decision about whether to go ahead with this (tentative) plan now. The plan is just a framework, so adaptable to things changing quickly. Once I get to GW 12, I could even consider WC early (at a time that many others are). These are things I'm weighing up and people's opinions might be useful to me.

I'm pretty sure you look ahead to see which players you can get without a hit, or ith 2FTs for example, so there's no need to poo poo my plan, buddy!

Booking transfers hardly works out. If GW12 is going to be a blank for City then things may just become very sticky.

      1. Deulofail
        • 10 Years
        3 years, 7 months ago

It's not booking transfers because I'm not making a team now with the assumption that I can make these transfers. I already have my team and these transfers are optional ideas.

Why would GW12 be a blank for City out of interest? If this is the case, this plan only has Haaland and Martinelli from that game, and I also have a WC of course, as you can see 😛

Thinking out loud. Assuming no transfers, WC teams would have this many games against top 5 teams (excluding UTD) before GW13:

      3 MCI + 1 ARS + 2 TOT = 11
      3 MCI + 1 ARS + 1 TOT = 10
      3 MCI + 1 ARS = 9
      2 MCI + 1 ARS + 2 TOT = 9
      2 MCI + 1 ARS + 1 TOT = 8
      2 MCI + 1 ARS = 7
      1 MCI + 1 ARS + 2 TOT = 7
      1 MCI + 1 ARS + 1 TOT = 6
      1 MCI + 1 ARS = 5

My plan = minimum of 7

    7. The Mentaculus

I actually quite like this plan, and I get it, its not exactly 'booking transfers', its just mapping out a way of delaying WC by avoiding an imbalanced squad relative to the fixures. You can always adjust it & WC in 11, 12 or whatever if you start picking up too many injuries or change your mind. And generally I'm all for putting off the WC this week - I think its very tricky to nail right now & a few more weeks' info on Liverpool, Chelsea, Maddison etc will be useful

      1. Deulofail
        • 10 Years

Thanks for your thoughts, The Mentaculus! Can always rely on you for thoughtful replies. Looking forward to the day you don't like my ideas though! 😀

I did plan to WC in 9, and can make a reasonably nice team, but there's enough doubt about several of the individual players that I think ensuring a route back to Liverpool & City is more important while building a 'balanced' WC with some City, Arsenal and Spurs (maybe Liverpool) in it doesn't give you an advantage over managers who are selling Liverpool and Arsenal players with FTs (and then, of course, you don't have a WC to get them back again).

I like the word 'mapping'! I will use that in the future to avoid the lazy responses to mid-term 'planning' in the future. Cheers!

Alright chaps, stuck with my last UCL spot in midfield. It goes to either Shved, Sane or Luis Diaz. Which? I've got LD in my team as it stands.

You on a the limitless chip. I’m playing it but struggling to identify players for tonight. Probably want 6/7 but only got 5 right now

Salah, Son & Perisic (if starting), Sane, Lopez (keeper)

    Perisic+Zaha or Royal+Maddison

Would have Martinelli for GW8, then transfer to either Zaha or Maddison dependent on which Spurs DF I go for

Thoughts on WC team? £0.0 ITB:

    Pope - Ward
    Cancelo - James - Trippier - Coufal - N. Williams
De Bruyne - Bowen - Maddison - Martinelli - Andreas
    Haaland - Isak - Mitrovic

On a WC what is the better Trio over coming weeks, thinking longer term through 8-11/12

    A) Hendo + Bailey + Kane

    Or

    B) Pope + Maddison + Isak

    Sanchez, Ward
    TAA, Robbo, Cancelo, Trippier, Cucu
    Salah, Bernardo, Martinelli, Andreas, dasilva
    Haaland, Jesus, Archer

    A or B?
    A) Robbo, Salah and Archer -> Perisic, ASM and Kane for -4? (3-4-3 with ward against spurs)

    B) Ward, Robbo and Salah -> Pope, Perisic and ASM for -4? (3-5-2 with dasilva)

How does Salah / TAA / Archer >> KDB / Perisic / Isak for -4 sound?

Most likely to WC next week anyway.

Isak can be anyone up to 8m so could get Mitro instead?

no 3rd NEW would have to be Isak, I have the other 2

they concede to many for a triple DEF. Main reason for that double of Pope and trips is also for Pope (save points) and Trips (Attacking returns via set pieces)
