The 2022/23 UEFA Champions League (UCL) is back on Tuesday and Wednesday – which means it’s time for the competition’s official Fantasy game.

If you’re new to the game or just need a reminder of the rules, check out our ‘how to play’ guide below and don’t forget to join the official FFScout UCL League (Pin code: 75L4Q5EA10).

Our series of preview articles continues by focusing on Matchday 2 and its most appealing assets.

GOALKEEPERS

These fixtures seem to give plenty of opportunities to get into the €4.5m goalkeeper bracket. Both Pau Lopez of Marseille and Mathew Ryan of Copenhagen have fixtures against inconsistent sides – Frankfurt and Sevilla.

The duo play on different days which, of course, means that we can bring Ryan in if Lopez fails to return any significant points on Tuesday. Going cheap at the back also gives managers more of a budget to spend on pricier options.

DEFENDERS

Staying with Marseille, Nuno Tavares (€4m) is also selected. His three goals from wing-back this season alongside some clean sheet potential will appeal to the UCL community. At one of the cheapest prices in the game, Tavares could be a fantastic pick.

Reinildo Mandava (€4.5m) becomes one of the cheapest ways into the Atletico Madrid defence for when the Spanish side face Leverkusen, who have lost six of their first eight matches in all competitions whilst also failing to score in three of them.

Inter are against Viktoria Plzen. Although dominant in their own league, the Czech outfit were dismantled in a 5-1 defeat to Barcelona on Matchday 1. Denzel Dumfries (€5.5m) plays as an Inter wing-back, where the Dutchman has continued the attacking form that saw him notch two goals at Euro 2020. Already this season, the attack-minded defender has picked up a goal and an assist in Serie A.

FPL Gameweek 18 round-up: Sunday review, injury news and the things we learned 4

Manchester City remain the best team in the Premier League for several of the key underlying defensive stats. For that reason, investing in their back line could be very beneficial. €6.5m Joao Cancelo picked up two assists and a clean sheet in Matchday 1, reminding everyone of his true Fantasy potential.

Although there are lots of changes at Chelsea, Reece James (€6m) continues to ooze attacking potential, collecting two domestic attacking returns. With a focus on the defence, new head coach Graham Potter will likely want to stabilise things at the back. This indicates good clean sheet potential for the home fixture against Salzburg.

MIDFIELDERS

Real Madrid continue their relentless winning form in all competitions. Star striker Karim Benzema has been ruled out of the Matchday 2 tie against Leipzig and it could be Vinicius Junior (€10m) who steps up. The Brazilian has five goals and two assists from seven matches played in all competitions.

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia of Napoli comes in at the budget-enabling price of €5.5m. They face Rangers, who were comfortably beaten 4-0 by Dutch champions Ajax last week. He has been a revelation since his summer move.

Meanwhile, Celtic play against Shakhtar Donetsk. Jota (€6.5m) has racked up four goals and four assists in all competitions from just seven appearances.

Another in-form enabler makes it into the Matchday 2 picks, as Mohammed Kudus (€5m) raised a lot of eyebrows last time. His 14 points consisted of a goal, assist and being named player of the match. The Ajax man comes into the Liverpool match with confidence after netting twice at the weekend.

Chelsea are against leaky Austrian side Salzburg and Jorginho (€5.5m) is fit and ready to go. The Italian takes the Blues’ penalties, giving him an extra route to points other than ball recoveries.

FORWARDS

It could be a high-scoring week for PSG. They match up against Maccabi Haifa, who were comfortably beaten in the 2-0 loss to Benfica.

The French side is averaging over three goals per match which makes them a team that UCL Fantasy managers simply have to invest in. Both Neymar (€10m) and Kylian Mbappe (€11m) make the team for that reason, with their fine scoring and creating form.

Finally, there is Erling Haaland (€11m). The forward continued to provide a world-class rate of returns, with 12 goals and two assists making him one of Europe’s highest-producing players. Now that he turns out for free-scoring Man City, his appeal has somehow increased further.

CAPTAINCY

This could be wide open on Tuesday, with no standout options allowing UCL managers to use this as a great opportunity to take a risk.

The shortlist should include wing-back Dumfries, as well as Mohamed Salah (€11m). The Egyptian is not hitting his usual world-class standard but has still collected three goals and three assists in eight matches.

Wednesday is clearer. It would be very difficult to not back Mbappe. The Frenchman has now scored nine goals in his seven matches of the season and is against Maccabi Haifa.

Andreas has rather nice fixtures. Bailey rotates alright with Trippier.

I can't have 11 players firing all the time, hence the term enabler.

Worried, no. Is it the weak spot, yes.

          Kane needs to be delivering.

Popular WC picks that I don't like:

Isak - I'm struggling to find reason to give Isak my 3rd striker spot. He's still quite unproven in the PL and even last year he only scored 6 goals in La Liga. Hot starts do happen but it's been literally 1 game against Pool as the sample size. His long term fixtures are also not as good as the likes of Mitro and Toney (until GW16). The only thing he has going for him is his GW8 fixture and I feel that is clouding people's judgment on picking him up over Toney who I consider to be the better option.

Bowen - He's 8.3m for a West Ham attacker who has shown very little threat this season. Yes, he took a penalty in the Europa Conference League, but he definitely does not look worth his price tag and there are smarter places to allocate funds. I'd rather keep an eye on Paqueta at 6.0m since that's a lot more generous pricing for a West Ham attacker.

Maddison - Leicester are in relegation form and his own stats have been really poor as well in the last few weeks. 5 shots, 1 on target in his last 3 games is awful. He also compares unfavorably with Harvey Barnes in that same time frame. Barnes has had more shots, higher xG, and is cheaper. Not that I recommend Barnes, but I'd just stay away from Leicester at the moment. There are better options at mid-priced midfield.

De Bruyne - KdB is in a lot of WC drafts I'm seeing and I don't think he's a particularly great pick outside of this one week. His fixtures aren't very good, he doesn't offer another captaincy option since most people will cap Haaland instead if they want to target City fixtures and he's a rotation risk while European games are live. Unless you make a specific plan to offload him in short order like KdB > Sterling I don't really like him that much as a pick. Bernardo or Foden offer similar security of starts and save you a lot of money.

Rashford - I'm seeing him in some drafts as a bench option on a WC8 but I would definitely not do it. There are rumors he might be injured, he's got a blank this week and City the game after. Plus the risk of rotation. Just go for someone else and wait until after the City game to reassess if he's worth bringing in. He's cheap too so it shouldn't be too difficult to get him.

    Underrated options that I like:

Zaha - He has a blank this week which is unfortunate but after that he has great fixtures until the world cup (Chelsea at home is attackable imo) and he's very nailed with penalties. Depending on your WC setup, he should be able to find his way in as one of your bench choices for this week.

Toney - Hugely underrated because of his unfavorable GW8 fixture vs Mitrovic and Isak's. Strong fixtures and he also doesn't have international duty most likely with England so should come back fresh and firing against bou.

Sterling - Unfortunate timing for the blank but he's very high on my watchlist from GW9 onwards. He seems to suit Potter's style well and is a very nice differential. Could be tough to get on a WC8 but certainly for WC9 should be strongly considered imo.

Impossible to build a wildcard team this week if you disregard KDB, Rashford & Maddison though. Options in midfield are scarce. Could add Son & Bowen as options but both of them aren’t doing anything either.

        You can.

        Son Martinelli Zaha Andreas Bailey

I would probably look at something like this. I can understand KdB for one week but it would have to be planned that he would be leaving the team soon because that GW9-12 stretch ain't great. I'd rather gamble Son vs LEI than KdB vs wol anyway.

Makes little sense - you want to bin KDB after this week but if so the same should apply even more to Son because KDB's fixtures 9&10 are better than Son's.
Also KDB 9&10 at home, so he is just a better option than Son.

Well, to be fair it was different situation - no Haaland, so KDB had more of a goal threat.

Still very much prefer KDB with the idea of holding for 2 home matches than Son and basically booking a transfer next GW.
If someone really wants Spurs asset it should be Kane + someone like Zaha/ASM(if fit) instead of Isak+Son.

Like that midfield. Although Son seems bit of a gamble at this point. I’m weighing up Son & Toney vs Kane & Maddi/Rash on wildcard.

Isak v Toney is close. Fixtures are the same. Toney isn’t underrated though he’s in a fair few teams now. Also Bowen is 8.1m now fwiw.

Nice post btw. Share some similar thoughts although disagree on KDB.

Agree with much of this but KDB doesn't need good fixtures to haul & I still think he's the best 2nd premium atm, certainly well ahead of Sterling. Now that it seems like Haaland's rests will be minimal, he's not strictly needed as a 2nd captain, but I would definitely still choose KDB right now with the option of moving to Son/Sterling later

I think with Bowen and Maddison there's the hope that the kind fixtures lead to an upturn in form. Both went on a hot streak of form last season and if West Ham and Leicester can get results from the next few games then it's likely that Bowen and Maddison would be the catalysts for this.

With the cancellations this week, the pool of midfielders for those on a WC is a bit smaller. I see both Bowen and Maddison as short term punts for the time being. If they show good form then they keep their place for a bit longer. If not, then there's plenty of alternatives to move to in midfield from gw10 onwards.

Agree with Camzy pretty much all the way.
GW10 is time to hop off Martinelli onto Zaha.
Start with KdB, GW11 move to Son for one GW, then onto Salah until the World Cup.
If Arsenal-City GW12 is off, I'll be free of Arsenal assets and have Cancelo and Haaland who can be benched.

I agree and disagree at the same time. I could easily stick with Saka/Diaz, but I think that Maddison/Bowen will score more points in the next 4 games and that's why I'm making the switch. Sometimes fixtures create form and both of them are on set pieces. De Bruyne v Son is a tough one and my decision will depend on UCL and their minutes. Rashford only delivered in derbies so far, which is kind of weird. We don't know how Potter will use Sterling and that's why I'm staying clear for now. Zaha is going under the radar again and is high on my watchlist. I'm not sold on Isak yet and I agree that the other two are better options right now. However, I'm considering a wild punt on Solanke or Watkins. Because why the hell not when you're on WC and your OR sucks?! 😀

Not convinced by Bowen yet so would favour ASM this week. Good to keep your GW9 options open too. Zaha probably in the lead for me right now but if we see signs of improvement for Leicester/Chelsea then I'd maybe change course as I think Maddison & Sterling would be better options if they weren't currently stuck in dysfunctional teams
