Throughout the 2022/23 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) season, our stellar team of Pro Pundits, Hall of Famers and guest contributors will be sharing their thoughts and own transfer plans.

Only Premium Members are able to read every single one of these pieces, so sign up today to get full access not just to the editorial content but all of the other benefits, from hundreds of Opta stats to a transfer planner.

Here, seven-time top 10k finisher Zophar tackles some FPL hot topics and reveals his team plans for Gameweek 11.

It’s getting closer to the World Cup and it seems that my FPL team is already in the spirit of the tournament with all the flags I’m seeing. In this piece, I will be discussing the injury issues around Reece James (£6.1m) and Aleksandar Mitrovic (£6.8m) while also diving into the Liverpool dilemma ahead of their amazing run of fixtures from Gameweek 12 on.

LIVERPOOL

I won’t go too much into the scheduling as Neale has already discussed it in this article but just in case you missed it, I’ve included the graph from the piece that shows that not only do Liverpool have the shortest lead-up time to Gameweek 12, they also have the shortest turnaround time ahead of Gameweek 13.

A lot of the reaction when Luis Diaz (£8.0m) got injured was that it would make the Liverpool front four of Diogo Jota (£8.9m), Roberto Firmino (£8.0m), Darwin Nunez (£8.8m) and Mohamed Salah (£12.7m) ‘nailed’ due to lack of options but we have seen in the past that Jurgen Klopp is big on sports science and with this schedule in mind, there will be rotation over these three matches. Sunday’s game against Manchester City will no doubt feature their first-choice XI but we could see some players drop in and out for the West Ham United and Nottingham Forest fixtures.

Liverpool stuck with their 4-4-2/4-2-3-1 system against Rangers in the Champions League midweek and benched both Jota and Salah, with Fabio Carvalho (£5.4m) and Harvey Elliott (£5.0m) featuring in their place. Salah came on in the second half in the centre-forward role with Jota stationed behind him and got a hat-trick in under 6.5 minutes.

Klopp said after the game :

“Yeah, different position, Mo inside (forward). An outstanding player we all know that, today he showed that.”

Salah is likely to return to his role on the right wing against Manchester City but having how had his rest, coupled with the early substitution against Arsenal, I think he is one of their most nailed attackers for the Gameweek 11-13 run. There is a chance that Nunez gets benched or gets managed minutes in either the West Ham or Forest matches, which could see the Egyptian feature up top – and that would increase his goal threat significantly.

We should be cautious about reading too much into a match against Rangers but personally, I am keeping the Salah option for Gameweek 12 open now. I was thinking earlier this week about moving further away from FPL’s most expensive player, downgrading Kevin De Bruyne (£12.4m) to perhaps Leandro Trossard (£6.8m) and upgrading Mitrovic to Harry Kane (£11.4m), but I don’t think I will be doing that now. I’d rather wait and see how the Reds fare in Gameweek 11. If I was a Salah owner, I would definitely hold him for now.

For all that’s been said about Liverpool’s malaise, I still see them scoring goals against West Ham and in particular against Forest, Leeds United and Southampton. I definitely want a piece of that attack and if not Salah, I will likely plump for Nunez, who looks to be the focal point of the attack in this set-up. But I am now leaning towards leaving this decision to Gameweek 12.

While we are discussing Liverpool, Andrew Robertson (£6.7m) was on the bench last night. In this current system, the left-back has been given significantly more license to bomb forward due to the more defensive-minded Joe Gomez (£4.5m) being stationed at right-back, so the Scot could be a good pick to replace Reece James. The obvious concern is rotation: having just returned from injury, he could feature against Man City but then may miss either West Ham or Forest.

While on the subject of James replacements, I think Gomez is worth a shout if you need someone just for the short term and you don’t mind benching him this week. There are potential clean sheets against West Ham, Forest and Leeds and he did get an assist last night in open play.

Mitrovic: Sell or keep?

We will be discussing all these issues and more on this week’s episode of The FPL Wire. Check it out here from 2.30pm BST on Thursday.

    Here’s what I think.

Darwin has started all 3 games with new new formation.

I can’t see how Salah and Darwin start upfront together though.

They’ll need a Firmino/Jota player to operate in between the lines as Klopp emphasises enough.

So I’d expect Darwin to start in every game when Salah is on the right wing. When Darwin is subbed Salah to move upfront. Jota/Firmino to rotate. If Salah starts upfront, Darwin is benched.

Elliot and Carvalho will get some minutes, particularly to allow Salah upfront. I’d expect Elliot to start on the left.

I’d add that Jota was going to start LM until the injury.

So at the weekend is strongly expect this lineup (from left to right)

      Jota Firmino Salah Elliot

    1 FT, 2.8m in bank

    Henderson
    James Saliba Trippier
    Zaha Martinelli KDB Gross
    Mitrovic Toney Haaland

    Sanchez Andreas Cancelo N. Williams

Really worried about the next couple of gameweeks, especially with James's injury. Have used Wildcard, but Free Hit is still available. Will probably save my transfer this week then do Saliba + KDB for Salah + Guehi/Andersen. Any other ideas?

You don't need to do anything IMO.

Play Sanchez over Hendo. Everything else solves itself from the bench.

Salah on the right wing is not worth it. Barely involved in the attacks, and not in the box often enough.

Looking for some ideas. Ideally would have liked to roll FT but I think I have to make a defender transfer. Looking at Webster or Anderson but not sure who to transfer out.

    1FT 1.1ITB
    Pope
    Cancelo Trippier James*
    Zaha KDB Maddison Martinelli
    Toney Haaland Mitro
    (Ward Andreas Neco Emerson)

I only want James GW12/13 maybe 14 anyway.

I am similar as have Patterson on the bench.

If Mitro is out too, i may go Darwin upfront and downgrade the defender to 4.5 brackets for a -4 and be done with it (as Saka, and Martinelli will be my Arsenal choice with Jesus on 4 YC's)

some of the softest penalties I've ever seen have been given in the prem and CL this week. Players now know that when refs watches a fast forward/rewound super slow mo of them hitting the deck its good to throw in some special FX. like jumping up in the air Jesus style or just falling into the player like Harry did last night.

    1. Philosopher's Stones
      • 5 Years

The game has gone soft, and the players are milking it fully.

re winding a challenge over and over completely alters the cause and effect in terms of whether the force was enough to send the player flying to the ground. theres no way thiago touching jesus's foot was but you watch it on the monitor and of course its going to be given. they shouldnt be allowed watch a foul for a penalty in slow mo in my opinion.

        1. Philosopher's Stones
          • 5 Years

Yeah, the slow mo also adds some dramatic effect to it, and more likely to be given.

Replaced him with B last week. Watched the palace game following that and he wasn't great! A would be a better option with Collins alongside him but he's suspended until the 18th (I think -?) Over the next 2 GWs I'd say C is the most well-rounded option as he is quality, will definitely play and offers good attacking threat. Longer term, B is a solid option but limited. D has the FPL pedigree of the past but from what I've seen recently he doesn't look as sharp or as dangerous, and his place is perpetually at risk from Emerson and possibly Spence.

In order I'd go with C (short-term), B (long-term), A (when Collins is back), D (Dier is probably the better option here if you have to have Spurs)

Hope that helps chief, best of luck!

      It's all quite underwhelming:

      (a) minutes risk and rotation
      (b) same
      (c) at least nailed

Other options would be kilman, dalot (though can we trust utd) or maybe gomez if you can bench for this week

Think it will have been overshadowed by Mo's rapid hatty and LIV scoring 7 goals, but last night was a real coming of age performance from Harvey Elliott and, to a lesser extent, Carvalho. Still a wait and see for me, but at their FPL prices I'm taking notice. If Harvey can maintain that kind of performance when he gets his chances in the Prem then he will get a chance and could be gold.

Konaté and Gomez also both very good. The cheaper LIV assets might just shine this year.

I really wouldn't read much into a game against a side that I think would struggle in the Championship, only saw highlights of this game but in the first match they didn't even look like they were fit enough to compete (ignoring the gulf in class). Elliott is still really young and has a lot of good attributes but I think he really needs to speed up his play, he can be very slow on the ball and has been part of the reason why Liverpool haven't been great in transition like they used to be, he takes too long to decide what he's going to do. Maybe if he's redeployed at RW it'll suit him more but I'm not going to assume he's made any huge strides from a game against a side that's that poor.

What? Have you watched any games he's played in? He's been arguably Liverpool best player this season. He certainly doesn't slow play down or cause issue in transition. Think you're getting mixed up with Jordan Henderson here. Goodness.

Yes, I've watched plenty of Liverpool games, he doesn't move the ball fast enough for Liverpool's style of play, they normally try to get the ball up to the other end of the pitch as quick as possible and I always think he slows things down. Often takes a touch too much and doesn't move the ball out quick enough for Liverpool to keep any pace in transition going. I didn't say he's a bad player, I said he has a lot of good attributes and he's a good technical player, and he holds onto the ball well, but holding onto it for too long is also a thing.

Elliott has been Liverpool's best player?

I actually haven't been a big fan of his (too lightweight and too safe) but last night I saw what the hype was about. He was dictating play so well when coming central that I suspect that his future could be at CM/CAM as Fabinho/Bobby begin to get phased out steadily.

You can only beat what is in front of you and to say that an EL finalist that have had a decent summer window would struggle in the Championship is more than a bit extreme (although they did look subdued again last night).

Perhaps I am judging Rangers a little too harshly, but I really was shocked at how ill-equipped they seemed to be to simply compete in the game with the basics. I know Liverpool dominate the ball generally and are an intense side to play against so it can be draining for a lot of sides, but they looked like they had been playing for 70+ mins after about 10 last week.

I'm in similar position as Zophar inasmuch as I have James, Mitrovic and Salah.

    Fortunately got 2 FT too.

Was considering selling Salah but glad I held off now. I will keep him and look at replacing the other two instead.

Perisic definitely looking an option now, but I'm also thinking that a cheeky punt on Solanke might pay some dividends up to the World Cup WC (WC/WC).

I've similar but no Salah. Was thinking of Mitro & James to Firmino & Perisic for free

        Yes.

Other option is play Guehi and just replace Mitro, rolling a FT over.

Got till tomorrow evening to decide at least.

Cancelo and Mitro to Kane and Kilman/Dunk for a hit? Will WC in GW13.
Got more value tied up in my other Arsenal/City assets and plan to keep them all on WC + getting Cancelo back.
The Cancelo-move will cost me 0,2 unless his price drops.

Will probably also move Ederson to Sanchez for GW12.

What are your thoughts on Toney?

Fixtures ain't looking that easy now and Brentford lacks form. Upgrade to Kane? Replace with Firmino or Scamacca?

I always find Toney is hard to predict with returns, had him for a long spell at the end of last season and barely had any returns from him, and the returns he did get were in games you didn't really expect them in. Don't hate the idea of holding him but Brentford have had a bit of a drop off since that crazy game against Leeds, 1 goal in 3 games (a penalty at that), might not be a bad time to jump off

They did manage a clean v Wolves in GW2. Next 2 fixtures are possible don’t you think?

That's Wolves, who IIRC have the lowest returns in the league.

I see Perisic mentioned as possible James replacement. Why is that? He is often benched and when starting he often subbed before 60. Last night he didnt play a minute. Rested or perhaps just out of favor? Can someone explain?

Benched the last 2 games isn't positive but with short turnaround he'll probably start 1 from the next 2 due to Sessegnon mins and Doherty building match fitness

    Suggestions please.
    0.0 itb, 1 FT

    Pope, Ward
    James, Justin, Trippier, Cancelo, Emerson
    KdB, Martinelli, Zaha, Maddison, Trossard
    Haaland, Mitro, Solanke

What you think about doing James and Emerson for two of Andersen/Guehi/Kilman/Dunk/Perisic/Dier

Or would you just roll transfer to gw12?

Looking for some advice with 1 sub available.

    Pope
    Gabriel Trippier Cancelo
De Bruyne Aaronson Martinelli Maddison Andreas
    Haaland

Ward Mitro (inj.) Isaak (inj.) Patterson (ins) James (inj.)

I'm planning on WC in week 13, so I'm only looking for instant wk 11 impact and/or get rid of a Man City/Arsenal player before wk12.

I was going to do Gabriel to Dier, but maybe I should shift James now instead, which still leaves me with 5 non playing outfield players in wk 12.

Mitrovic could well be back in GW12, the main issue is James!!!

    Pope
    Cancelo-Trippier-James*
    Bowen-Maddison-Martinelli-Zaha
    Haaland-Kane-Mitrovic*

    Ward-Andreas-Guehi-Neco*

In preparation for GW12, What's your suggestions with 2ft's and 0.7itb?
    Neco > Kilman??
    James > ??

Reasoning for a gw12 free hit for anyone with 5ish City Arsenal players in their current team, and no wildcard left

    - allows you to keep all your City Arsenal guys for gw13 onwards (obviously). Saves maybe 4-8 points on hits.
    - this year will be a lot more stable when it comes to BGWs/DGWs. For most of them, efficient transfer planning will be enough and there is every chance you don’t lose out on much by not having a free hit for BGW 31 or whatever
    - if you keep 3 blankers on your bench for gw12, there’s every chance you only field 8 starters or something as Neco Perisic and others are doubts. Plus people have injury issues and flags right now
    - Most importantly for me, I don’t see many good gw13-16 replacements for KDB Cancelo Martinelli Jesus right now anyway, so I would end up going back to them anyway for hits after gw12. Might it be worth doing a FH in 12 with something like

    Double Brighton attack
    Triple Chelsea
    Salah plus someone else
A few Mitro/Leicester/JWP/Palace type picks plus obviously Kane if there’s money

    Thoughts?

    Which is better ?

A- James > Perisic, play Auba and hope he starts
B- Auba > Kane, play Williams instead of James if injured
    C- both moves for -4?
