A couple of weeks ago we put together an article that looked at the recovery times for each Premier League club over the festive period.

The absence of a round of fixtures between Boxing Day and New Year means that most clubs (bar Leeds United and Manchester City) were handed a healthy breather between Gameweeks 17 and 18. We didn’t see too much rotation as a consequence.

But it’s the short gap between Gameweeks 18 and 19 that could pose a few problems on the teamsheet front, so we here make a quick revisit to this piece to look at the upcoming turnaround times.

“Sports science says you need at least 72 hours to recover.” – Jurgen Klopp

“It’s a ridiculous schedule. We all know that players aren’t fully recovered for 72 hours after a game.” – Brendan Rodgers on previous years’ scheduling

It’s worth mentioning a few factors here that may make rotation not the threat it usually is: many players go into this busy period off the back of a lengthy rest thanks to the World Cup, there are no 48-hour turnarounds as in previous years and an upcoming FA Cup third-round weekend allows Premier League managers to rest and rotate further.

GAMEWEEK 18-19: OVERVIEW

Thanks to moderator Legomane for the colour-coded graphic above (click to expand).

TURNAROUND TIMES: GAMEWEEK 18-19

GW18-19 Turnaround (in hours, to the nearest half-hour)
Liverpool67.5
Brentford68
Arsenal72.5
Brighton72.5
Nottm Forest73
Bournemouth75
Everton75
Fulham75
Newcastle75
Aston Villa76
Spurs76
Man Utd77.5
Leicester City94
Chelsea97.5
Southampton98.5
Crystal Palace99
Leeds United99
Wolverhampton Wanderers101.5
West Ham United118
Manchester City123

Liverpool were handed the harshest turnaround times in the busy period between Gameweeks 11-13 and the schedulers have it in for the Reds again, with their gap between Gameweeks 18 and 19 the shortest in the division.

Jurgen Klopp’s troops play in the early kick-off in Gameweek 19, at least, so we might at least get a heads-up on any early team news.

Brentford are the only other side with a sub-72-hour turnaround but at least they are in the same boat as their Gameweek 19 opponents from Merseyside.

Manchester City – whose manager Pep Guardiola made only one line-up change against Everton anyway – are on easy street, with a full five days in between their Gameweek 18 and 19 fixtures. That doesn’t mean Guardiola won’t change things around for the Chelsea game (who knows what diabolical schemes he has in mind), just that fatigue ought not to be a factor.

Is it really worth doing Darwin to Mitro (C) for a double gameweek only?

I moved Martial as I wanted to keep Darwin at least for one more week, but Mitrovic is a great pick long term

    Best C next gw?

I am considering a punt on Pereira.

As a Fulham fan I'd be sceptical - he's a good player and he's playing well, but he's not really that much of a threat. He might get the odd assist, but I think there's much better captain options this week.

The problem is that Bournemouth are much better at their right side where Rashford plays. I think Antony will run riot.

Pereira looked quite dangerous whenever I watched him tho.

City tend to play quite well against Chelsea generally and they need a reaction, although I am a bit wary of their form and lack of attacking flow of late. Even before yesterday's result I had a bit of a feeling that they've been slipping up in games too often to win the title, they could turn it around of course but part of the benefit of having Haaland there is the drawback of losing control in games a bit, even though they will hammer a few teams. Still think people are overestimating Chelsea, only beat a poor Bournemouth side and lost control after James went off.

Haven't a clue what to do here. James will certainly go.

Definitely not ruled him out yet. His spot to lose

Graham Potter on Kai Havertz: "I think as a nine he gives you the flexibility and variability in the game. He can drop in but he can also threaten the backline and he can score. So I like him in that position."

Sofascore with Opta stats show White being subbed out at 60 mins.

Do they actually have to hit 61 and is that why FPL drops it to 59?

I realise the clock starts at 0 not 1.

what was the precise time in seconds he came off?

Has a defender on a clean sheet ever got this close to the 60 min threshold before being subbed? Probably not. Absolutely absurd. I have White also.

      60th minute
      Vs
      Playing 60 complete minutes

E.g if a goal is scored before 60 seconds they wouldn’t say it was scored in the 0th minute, instead it’s 1st minute

From Pep comments he seems utterly and almost inexplicably happy with the team performances as it stands.
Hailed the Liverpool game, he said extraordinary well about the Leeds game etc. Yet they concede vs a pretty much Leeds b team and Everton somehow managed to score and draw.
He might stick to that team.

Cancelo is overated in the sense that a technical and tactical skilled defender easily can slot in for him without harming their defence.

Portugal coach replaced him also. Semedo and Dalot arent world beaters at right back..

I would like to get rid of Foden for Mount but who do i bench.......also if I rolled my transfer GW20 I would have 2FTs for more favourable DGW announcements, which would leaveme with just Chelsea keeper and Andreas as this weeks DGW players ??

Variance. If Haaland finished all of the sitters KDB put on a plate for him, he could have had 5 assists in the past 2 GW’s. He wont blank forever more. Next 2 GW’s will be great for him, i can feel it. Great record against Chelsea too.

I’ve got him too, will probably get something v a Chelsea team trying to win.

Think he has a good record v Chelsea, I'm keeping too. Didn't have the best of games yesterday from what I saw but a lot of it was slipping on the pitch among other things you couldn't do much about. Still made a lot of chances and was excellent against Leeds. Hopefully it's just a case of City taking a few games to regain their fluency, although you do have to feel Cancelo not playing (and Foden too) is part of that

Yeah and another thing to note aswell, is that City are actually slipping behind Arsenal. 7 points now. Every game is vital, and Pep would be bonkers to not play him. It’s already at the stage were KDB is likely to play every game possible.

We have to keep. Need three City players and can’t get Foden.

Had a great GW so far 74 with one to play. Team looking in good shape.

I own Bruno. Should I be capping him v Bournemouth? Unless I just go Haaland.

Does this hit make sense or just the double move and keep wilf?

        Out- martial, James, zaha
        In- mitro, shaw, mount

I also have Zaha. I am going to keep one more week as the transfer window is open and he will want to show off in the hope a big team comes for him. He also tends to do better against bigger teams

Happy New Year to you all! Thoughts much appreciated please?

        A. Iversen & Cancelo to Kepa & Cucurella - no hit.

        B. Iversen, Cancelo & Martial to Kepa, Cucurella & Mitro - 4 point hit.

        C. Cancelo & Greenwood to 4.2 DEF & Mitro - no hit but benching headache with 5 decent midfielders and Martial.

When do you think is best to play the BB?

        A) After a WC in a big DGW to try and get 4 extra fixtures with 15 DGWers
        B) In a SGW when your bench has good fixtures

I’ve generally been on A) but I think there are also merits in B), e.g. it could be better to instead use funds in your 11 with a cheap bench and use other chips (TC, WC, FH) in the DGWs to get the strongest 11 out.

Had a quick look at the fixtures and GW24 could be a decent option to play it - if all goes to plan my bench would be:

        Kepa (SOU)
        Patterson (LEE)
        Bueno (BOU)
        Andreas (bha)

I played it GW 1 and got 20 points from it, up there with my best from loads of planning and DGWs

What is this Foden hate from Pep? If I were Foden my agent would be looking for a new club by now. Everyone can see that Foden is a level over Grealish/Mahrez.

Anything worth a free transfer here, or even two for a -4? (I know most people will be doing Darwin > Mitro

              Kepa
              Trippier - White - Cucu
              KDB - Almiron - Rash - Martinelli
              Kane - Haaland - Darwin

              Ward - Andreas - Botman - Bueno
