Our latest Members article series, reviving an old Scout strand called Tales of the Expected, explores the expected goals (xG) data from the last six matches, assessing each side from an attacking and defensive perspective.

In addition, we’ll also check out the form players on show, asking if their recent output is sustainable.

Having last looked at these tables ahead of Gameweek 16, it’s time to revisit them again, armed with the latest stats from the restart.

Only Premium Members are able to read these pieces, so sign up today to get full access not just to the editorial content but all of the other benefits, from hundreds of Opta stats to a transfer planner.

TEAMS

First up, let’s take a look at the recent xG data over the last six matches, taking into account that Wolves, Southampton and Aston Villa have all changed managers in this period.

XG: LAST SIX MATCHES

No top-flight side has scored more goals than Brighton in their last six matches, with 17 from 8.65 xG. Everton and Chelsea have been on the receiving end of heavy 4-1 defeats in that time, with xG figures higher than 2.0 racked up by Albion on both occasions.

BRIGHTON XG BREAKDOWN: LAST SIX MATCHES
GW14 (CHE)GW15 (wol)GW16 (AVL)GW17 (sou)GW18 (ARS)GW19 (eve)
Brighton2.441.570.660.641.172.17

In recent seasons, Brighton have heavily underperformed their xG, so it’s notable that they are finally converting their chances and overachieving (+8.35) by such a margin. With De Zerbi settling in nicely, budget options like Kaoru Mitoma (£4.9m) and Alexis Mac Allister (£5.4m) carry potential.

Man City and Arsenal switch places at the top, although no side has underperformed their xG more than Pep Guardiola’s side in their last six matches (-3.97).

As for Arsenal, Eddie Nketiah (£6.5m) is deputising admirably in the absence of Gabriel Jesus (£7.9m), with only Newcastle keeping the Gunners’ attack below 2.0 xG since the restart.

ARSENAL XG BREAKDOWN: LAST SIX MATCHES
GW14 (NFO w/ Jesus)GW15 (che w/ Jesus)GW16 (wol w/ Jesus)GW17 (WHU w/ Nketiah)GW18 (bha w/ Nketiah)GW19 (NEW w/ Nketiah)
Arsenal2.302.251.812.202.931.12

Elsewhere, Darwin Nunez (£8.9m) has accounted for 4.13 of Liverpool’s xG tally but only scored twice, while Man Utd’s attack ahead of Double Gameweek 20 is clearly on the up. Yes, they have benefitted from a kind post-World Cup schedule (NFO/wol/BOU), but they last failed to score in Gameweek 11, so there is real progress under Erik ten Hag.

And what about Spurs? They were extremely clinical at Crystal Palace last time out – scoring four times from chances equating to just 1.39 xG – but their xG rank is 16th from Gameweek 17 onwards. That’s coincided with Dejan Kulusevski (£7.9m), their biggest creator behind Ivan Perisic (£5.5m) across the season, missing games.

West Ham, meanwhile, have dropped from third to 15th on the above table, while Chelsea are still struggling to create clear-cut opportunities under Graham Potter. And for all of Wolves’ improvements under Julen Lopetegui, they have managed an xG tally of just 2.46 in his three league games in charge, although it is still early days for the Spaniard.

United's Quarter-final team: Heaton, Malacia, Martinez, Maguire, Dalot, Fred, McTominay, Garnacho, Elanga, Antony, Mainoo

Bench: DDG, Lindelof, Shaw, AWB, Casemiro, Eriksen, Pellestri, Zidane, Rashford

    No Martial.

Any thoughts on Man City midfielders?Trying to understand if it's worth to get a second ManCity midfielder(already have Kdb). With four games(3 PL+1 Fa Cup) in ten days no one can guess who will start in the PL games. The ideal is to get the player who will start against Tottenham and Wolves but not sure i want to take the risk.

City is in 4 days and Palace another 4 days after that. There's no problem with him starting both games. He's coming back from injury and needs gametime to get his rhythm back. Martinez is in a similar situation after not playing in a while.

      3 days ago:

"Anthony is subbed - there is a reason because he can’t match the load for many games. That is why we are looking for another striker, it's not about that we don't rely on him. But his physical load is not in this moment so high that he can't play every third day a game of 90 minutes, so I have to manage that together with him. We are really on a thin line in this moment because his profile, the quality of Anthony Martial, is so important for our game. His movements, his ball security, he brings a lot for the team, the pressing - let's not forget that." - ETH

Inadvertently ended up with 6 DGWers and 2FT (0.0itb)

    DDG (Ward)
    CANCELO, trippier, robbo (White, Bueno)
    KDB, ZAHA, RASH, Marti (Andreas)
    HAALAND, Mitro, Darwin

Not feeling Kane as won't captain him/Spurs in general

Dalot starting today because he needs the match fitness before the Man City game. So he will 100% start that game then be rested for Palace before facing Arsenal.

Don't think you can be 100% sure on that, although given the proximity of the Arsenal game to the Palace it does seem it could be likely. Still, he might easily get under 60mins here, City is 5 days away, Palace 8 days away, not an impossibility he gets subbed a bit early against City and still starts the other two.

I think he'll be 13 mil or something. Over the past 8 or so weeks, he hasn't scored heavily at all. He's not as Premier as say Kun or RVP in their pomp. Doesn't have the service, as KDB wanes.

Thinking of moving (c) away from him to make up ground.

Yeah given pricing this year I don't think they'd actually piss people off by making him 15m.

I wouldn't seeing vice captaincy count for something (1.5?) though.

I honestly have no idea, this season they broke the usual system to go with cheaper prices across the board, and it hasn't really worked out as it's too easy to cram in multiple premiums alongside value picks and has nullified picking players from the weaker teams, the game has lost some fun in that regard. But will FPL care about that? More engagement and more players than ever, they may just keep doing it this way. Personally I prefer the old way, get Haaland at 13.5-14, Kane at 12-12.5, same for Salah, and probably more importantly get the mid-priced assets right. Players like Martinelli at 6m to begin with was ridiculous, and then having defenders at Forest or Bournemouth at the same price as Arsenal, ManUtd or Newcastle is just silly
