Four more Premier League matches follow hot on the heels of an absorbing Manchester derby.

Brighton and Hove Albion v Liverpool is the headline act, with three bottom-half scraps on the undercard:

Both sides at the Amex are missing notable names today, with Leandro Trossard out of first-team contention for disciplinary reasons and Darwin Nunez joining Liverpool’s ever-growing injury list.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in for Darwin is the Reds’ only alteration from the draw with Wolves in the FA Cup third round. Cody Gakpo makes his first Premier League appearance since his move to Merseyside earlier this month.

As for Brighton, Alexis Mac Allister is handed his first start since winning the World Cup with Argentina. Budget attacking assets Kaoru Mitoma and Evan Ferguson again get the nod, while Pascal Gross is moved to right-back as Joel Veltman is benched.

Nottingham Forest make one change to the side that beat Wolves on penalties to reach the EFL Cup semi-finals, with Scott McKenna coming in for the injured Willy Boly. Taiwo Awoniyi is still sidelined.

Leicester make two changes to the XI beaten by Newcastle in the EFL Cup on Tuesday, as Jamie Vardy and Nampalys Mendy replace the benched Patson Daka and the injured Ayoze Perez.

At Molineux, Hugo Bueno is back in the starting XI after a midweek breather. Nathan Collins, Daniel Podence, Ruben Neves and Matheus Cunha also return after being benched in that weakened EFL Cup line-up.

West Ham make three changes to the side that beat Brentford in the FA Cup last weekend with Aaron Cresswell, Vladimir Coufal and Pablo Fornals replacing Craig Dawson, Ben Johnson and Emerson Palmieri.

Alex Iwobi makes a miraculous recovery to start for Everton, who again ditch the wingers to go 3-5-2/5-3-2 with Demarai Gray alongside Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

A 2-0 cup win over Manchester City hasn’t stopped Southampton boss Nathan Jones from making alterations up top, as Che Adams, Samuel Edozie and Mohamed Elyounoussi come in for Sekou Mara, Adam Armstrong and Moussa Djenepo.

To paraphrase the late great Brian Clough, if a forward in the penalty area is not interfering with play, what is he doing there?

When arguing about Bruno's goal, please refer to the rules. Otherwise, you are likely just going off of your personal opinion of what the rules are, which is kinda useless to everyone... Do you disagree with the rules or with the application (in general or in this case)? Why?
    _____________

A player in an offside position at the moment the ball is played by a team-mate is only penalised on becoming involved in active play by:

    1) interfering with play by playing or touching a ball passed or touched by a team-mate

    2) interfering with an opponent by:

    a) preventing an opponent from playing or being able to play the ball by clearly obstructing the opponent’s line of vision

    b) challenging an opponent for the ball

    c) clearly attempting to play a ball which is close when this action impacts on an opponent

    d) making an obvious action which clearly impacts on the ability of an opponent to play the ball

I would say, maybe (a) and even more maybe (c).

It's just that the rule is too vague, what does it mean "clearly".

      1. RashFraud
        • 9 Years
        3 years, 7 months ago

a and c don’t come into play here because none of the city defenders were even close to rashford, let alone the ball

      2. Deulofail
        • 10 Years
        3 years, 7 months ago

Well Rashford didn't attempt to play the ball, so the definition of 'clearly' isn't relevant today, but you could ask that question in general, sure. Playing the ball means kicking, heading, shooting, passing, crossing, etc.

Concerning 2a, nobody's ability to play the ball was prevented by Rashford at all, let alone by obstruction. They chose not to try to play the ball (perhaps due to Rashford's actions), but that isn't penalised by the rules.

      (d) applies but is open to interpretation.

It is unclear what is ability. Psychological ability? Physical ability? They are dependent on each other. A player loses his ability to play in either case.

In previous instances, psychological ability was taken into account, but not here. The inconsistency of the interpretation is the problem here.

      1. Deulofail
        • 10 Years
        3 years, 7 months ago

Psychological ability was not prevented. Their psychological desire or something, yeah, but not ability. He didn't frazzle his brain. If you're right, then at least the refs were right today, and wrong in the past.

Although I assume the phrasing has been changed since these instances you're talking about(?), but it would be nice to see examples, if you have any.

So far the gameweek is going well.

Chose not to transfer Mount to Rodrigo
    Chose Rashford (c) over Haaland

Next big decision was starting Bueno over White.

FPL need to sort out their server first.

But they don't care. It's a marketing handle, nothing else.

Actual solution is easy: no new teams allowed in after gw1 deadline. But that would affect the marketing, so it's not possible to do that.
