Here, five-time top 1k finisher Tom Freeman tackles some of Gameweek 22’s hottest topics.

... 2

SALAH’S FORM

Mohamed Salah (£12.8m) has now blanked in four straight matches, a period that has seen Liverpool score just three goals.

No Reds player has accrued more minutes (450) than the Egyptian since the Premier League resumed in Gameweek 17, yet he is averaging just 4.2 points per match.

There has been a notable drop-off in the number of shots he is taking, too, which also extends to his rate of non-penalty xG (NPxG).

  • GW17-21: 2.00 shots / 0.39 NPxG
  • GW1-16: 3.65 shots / 0.51 NPxG
  • 2021/22: 4.51 shots / 0.62 NPxG

(all stats per 90 minutes)

Above: Mohamed Salah’s shot map (shots on target in green) since the Premier League resumed

Five games is too small a sample to draw any lasting conclusions, but Salah and Liverpool are undoubtedly in a bit of a slump.

The returns of Diogo Jota (£8.8m), Roberto Firmino (£8.0m) and Luis Diaz (£7.8m) should help, plus more training time for Cody Gakpo (£7.9m), but for now, transferring Salah out for Bruno Fernandes (£9.9m) is an option I’m strongly considering if Man Utd double in Gameweek 22.

RASHFORD TRIPLE CAPTAIN?

With five post-World Cup goals in six Premier League games, Marcus Rashford (£7.2m) is officially back.

From Gameweek 17 onwards, he is averaging 8.2 points per match, a figure only beaten by Solly March (£5.1m, 9.2) and Kieran Trippier (£6.0m, 9.0).

His rate of 3.15 shots/0.61 NPxG per 90 minutes offers further encouragement, but for those of you – including myself – who haven’t already used the Triple Captain chip, is he a viable option if Man Utd do get their double?

Firstly, Rashford is clearly in a very good moment and looks back to his best in Erik ten Hag’s 4-2-3-1.

“Marcus is doing really well but also [important] is the team to get the right shape so he can bring his strengths in and then he’s unstoppable with his speed, with his dribbles, with his directness.” – Erik ten Hag

“I believe when Marcus’ positioning is on the back of the defending line, there is almost no better player in the world.” – Erik ten Hag

Rashford might not be on penalties, which I do like my Triple Captains to have in their locker, but all in all, the positives far outweigh the negatives.

So, I have no problem with Rashford himself, but will he play both games?

Ten Hag hasn’t tended to rotate his line-ups too much up until now, but Man Utd are about to enter a period of fixture congestion:

  • Wednesday 25 January: Nottingham Forest (a) – League Cup
  • Saturday 28 January: Reading (h) – FA Cup
  • Wednesday 1 February: Nottingham Forest (h) – League Cup
  • Saturday 4 February: Crystal Palace (h) – Gameweek 22
  • Wednesday 8 February: Leeds United (h) – Gameweek 22*
  • Sunday 12 February: Leeds United (a) – Gameweek 23
  • Thursday 16 February: Barcelona (a) – Europa League

*This match will only go ahead if neither Man Utd/Leeds need FA Cup fourth-round replays

In an ideal scenario, Rashford will sit out one of the next three cup ties, which would boost his expected minutes in Gameweek 22. However, even if that doesn’t come to fruition, a Saturday-Wednesday-Sunday turnaround of league games isn’t the worst.

Now, let’s take a look at the opposition.

"Rashford isn't on penalties" in the article - this isn't true, he took our last one and scored.

We've only had 3 this season - Ronaldo isn't here anymore and Martial is never fit. Bruno has missed the last 2 he took for us. It makes sense to assume Rashford is on pens, especially when he's in the form he's in.

Martial is the one I was worried about. You think Rashford is ahead of him when they are both on the pitch?

I don't think Martial has even been in training and he certainly won't be available tonight, so doubt he'll start the Palace match. Might be on the bench for the Leeds game, but I would be surprised if Rashford lets him take a pen.

We don't get pens since Klopp cried about us, so it's a bit of a moot point anyway.

Palace game is still 10 days away, but yeah, I think it's unlikely Martial starts both.

If I was a betting man, I'd say he features against Forest (second leg) and gets injured again. Bloke's just not up for it at all - can't wait to see the back of him, honestly.

I always think you play so much better with him in the XI, so it's frustrating.

We play better than we did with Ronaldo, but when we had a proper striker like Cavani up front, it was like night and day. Weghorst is doing all the modern striker bits like pressing from the front, but can't see him scoring 15 goals before the end of the season, even with us still being in 4 competitions.

Martial's on £250k a week and still got a couple of years on his contract (I think), so we're stuck with him unfortunately.

Ah Cavani, what a player. I've changed that line in the article by the way, just to reflect that bit of uncertainty.

Like I say, I'd be shocked if Rashford didn't take it. Bruno also gifted Martial the pen against City - I don't think he's massively precious about it.

I might just go for Rashford TC tbh. It seems we're always trying to hold onto it for a later, more optimal moment, but he's got LEE and CRY. United could score 2/3/4 in each of those games, so you've gotta fancy Rashford to be involved in a couple of those. I'd take that after a series of sub-10 point TCs in the last 3-4 years.

Haaland has Villa and Arsenal a week later. Villa are better under Emry but the personnel is the same so their defence hasnt gotten better overnight. Against Arsenal, Haaland will be eager to lay down a marker and put City right back to the fore in the title race so i would expect him to score in that game also.

That is the major competitor to Rashford/Bruno TC.

The transfer window’s still open and Saka takes them for Arsenal. If he comes to us then he could be on them. Probably safest to just disregard penalties when making decisions on our assets.

I am leaning towards it. My bar is low on successful TCs lately, so I'd take 10-12 points and be done with it tbh (especially as that's an improvement on Haaland's 8).

So that's 1 goal in 2 games? Gotta fancy him to get a couple across those fixtures.

Is that the last planned DGW or are there more to come.

Arsenal v City likely to be low scoring and Villa have improved under Emery so may not be a goalfest for City.

That GW doesn't look appealing for a Haaland TC to me.

There will be others that we're not aware of yet down the line. Agree that United's two home games in 22 look more appealing than both of City's games in 23.

Certainly considering it but on the fence at the moment. Leeds game is perfect but I'm not sure if the Palace game will be so open that Utd score more than 2. Would like to see him rested in the 2nd leg v Forest too.

What factors should we take into account if we are considering going against Haaland (c)?

    An away fixture for City?

2/7 DD hauls were away fixtures.

    GW 1: whu (A) 0-2 13 points (2G)
    GW 4: CRY (H) 4-2 17 points (3G)
    GW 5: NFO (H) 6-0 17 points (3G)
    GW 9: MUN (H) 6-3 23 points (3G 2A)
    GW 13: BHA (H) 3-1 13 points (2G)
    GW 17: lee (A) 1-3 13 points (2G)
    GW 21: WOL (H) 3-0 17 points (3G)

Of course there are more context for each fixture but just wanted to have a conversation on it.

Personally, I'm not that keen on AVL/ars in 23. The worry is then that you leave it, but want to use other chips when he next doubles. Even if you don't, rotation could become more of a factor once UCL restarts.

Re away fixtures, that doesn't bother me so much with Haaland, it's more about the opposition.

Fair enough. Is there enough data to come to any conclusion on how Alvarez starting instead of KDB and vice versa has an impact on Haaland?

Probably not enough yet, but my instinct is KDB playing is much better for Haaland, rather than Alvarez who is more of a goal threat.

Well I guess we can throw the concept of form pretty much out the window. Made the mistake this week of thinking he's human & subject to that kind of thing! Although I'd still prefer City to be in a slightly better attacking rhythm.

The fixtures are big for me. I'll take home/away into consideration to some degree, but Villa's improving defence makes that a mediocre fixture at best imo, and Arsenal will be a huge test. I guess the latter could turn into a fairly open game like v Man Utd, but overall I'm not that keen on TC23. I had a look at some of Haaland's other potential doubles in an old HT, and my impression of the scheduling is that UCL games are unlikely to directly follow/precede any City DGWs so that shouldn't be an issue.

Haaland's DGW34 could be vs Fulham and Brighton, both away

But we need City/Brighton to progress in the EFL Cup

This is the main thing holding me back from TC22 on Rashford. But there's no guarantee

        Rather frustrating, this 😀

Hard to decide what moves to make here. I want to get rid of Cancelo & Mitro, but also think Bruno & triple Arsenal attack should be priority.

What do you recon? 2ft, 0.0itb, not afraid of hits and will see the cup games first.

Thanks for this Tom. I'd been meaning to ask about Moreno next time you do RMTs. His attacking movement definitely caught my eye in the Leeds game & I've pencilled him in for 25. He should be nailed even when Digne returns, right?

Yeah, I don't think Digne is a good fit for what Emery wants from his left back. I did see him linked to Marseille the other day, so he might be off. If he stays, he'll get the odd game, but I don't see him being first choice.

I have 14/15, Patterson instead of Bueno. Currently considering the moves below:

GW22: Cancelo, Almiron and Mitro to Mings, Bruno and Gnonto (-4)
Gw23: Bruno and Andreas to Mahrez and Ode (-4)

Tough to fit Saka in my budget unless I go with Ferguson instead of Gnonto but leaves me with 0.1 wiggle room which I will definitely not have by GW23

Outside of Trippier every player I own is worth .1 more than I paid for them. Weird!

I've got 7 players who have risen by 0.5m or more in TV since I purchased them. Having that type of money tried up in players makes DGW planning tricky. I'll be losing 0.3m+ if I take any of them out then bring them back in after the doubles.

For those that still have triple captain, are you captaining:

    A) Rashford in DGW 22
    B) Haaland in DGW23
    C) Holding

Reposting and rephasing an earlier reply, then:

Haaland's DGW34 could be vs Fulham and Brighton, both away

But we need City/Brighton to progress in the FA Cup

This is the main thing holding me back from TC22 on Rashford. But there's no guarantee, and I don't like Haaland's other possible DGWs because they each include one tough opponent

      Rather frustrating, this

      1. Ze_Austin

Still, I think I can be patient with the chip because of DGW37. If all else fails, just TC a nailed doubler in that last DGW

Good stuff as always, Tom. Going Salah to Bruno myself, for what will eventually be a -4. Liverpool's attack drains my hope by the week, so I'll step away as I did with our defence... Both after keeping the faith a bit too long

So true, the last two weeks I've really needed Salah to step up and he's not even getting chances. Probably looking at Salah/Martial > Fernandes/Nketiah myself if United get their double.

I agree on Alex Moreno as well. No matter how I look at it, he seems locked into my squad for GWs 25 to 28. If he gets that Leicester fixture pushed into DGW29, then he might be here for much longer as I'd keep him on BB29

Spurs can't drop Son regularly, otherwise he will ask to leave. They're very reliant on him, both when he's on form and comercially. Think I once heard that Spurs have more fans in South Korea than the UK

Very disappointing how Son wins golden boot one year and has a dismal season (so far) the next. I would really like to see him turn it around. He's got the skills. What's missing??

Did Almiron + Cancelo -> Shaw + Odegaard for free.

    Kepa
    Trippier - Shaw - Saliba
    Rash(c) - KDB - Odegaard - Martinelli
    Kane - Haaland - Ferguson

    Ward - Kulu - Roerslev - Bueno

Assuming no injuries to come, anything you'd consider taking a hit for? Also, is benching Kulu the right decision here?

    1. lugs

probably Kulu to Rodrigo if he gets the dgw

funnily enough i have the same dilemma, KDB is currently on my bench but he's likely getting sold for Bruno if that dgw happens so its an even worse benching headache where i'll probably bench kane lol, for your team i'd bench kane, Marti or Ferguson any of which can come back and bite you

Arteta is definitely not changing the starting 11 and risk the dynamic system he has right now, also Martinelli's underlying stats are still good. Probably he'll be subbed off more frequently but Trossard can easily play in Odegaard's and Saka's positions as well his role is not just to give rest to Martinelli but to give rest to all of the attacking line.

Is he worth selling for a hit with only 1 gw before the double ?

Fair eneough if your already on 3 Ars, but if you have say Marti and Odegaard and want to add a 3rd I don't see any good reason to transfer him out

City game might suit him better, with the space City leave in the full back positions

Nothing to indicate he'll be dropped, just the odd early substitution , probably the same with all of Arsenal attackers

Is Saka a bit overrated from an fpl perspective ?

Consistent but only double figures once this season, Martinelli has 3 double figure returns.

Not much difference in ppm either

Nketia only slight ahead of both in ppm but in a much smaller sample

I would go KDB Wilson to Bruno and Nketiah -4- would not bother with other move for further -4. You spend 4 points and and you might earn 2+2 for a Leeds defender if you are lucky (but possibly only 1 or 0 v ManU)

    The hype about players atm.
Martinelli will start getting more points than the players we bring in.
Mudryk will hit the ground running.
    Rodrigo will fail.
Mahrez will get dropped for no reason.
We can all have fun with RJames.
We will chase doubles when the single GW players will score.
    United will lose the DGW.
Darwin will start scoring now many have sold him.
    Pessimistic but possible.

    1. banskt
      • 12 Years

I can get behind all of those. Especially the Martinelli and Mahrez predictions. But, United losing the double has a very, very low probability: Neither United / Reading nor Leeds / Accrington sound like draws. Too much quality gap between the teams involved. Yet, I really want that to happen.

This is my WC team GW22.

    Kepa Ward
    Zinchenko Tripps Shaw Akanji Botman
    Odegaard Bruno Rash Mahrez Rodrigo
    Haa Kane Nketiah

Would you bench boost it in GW23?

    1. RICICLE
      • 3 Years
      3 years, 1 month ago

Like it, I do! However, is Zinchenko nailed? If he is then greet, jsit i don’t know personally.
Akanji I have my doubts about but bench is more than good enough to cover if he ever misses out.
Mahrez I’ll never go head again despite him starting, but would much prefer Saka over him but that’s just personal preference.
Can understand the hype around Nketiah for sure, but I’ve gone 352 with Saka over him and Gnonto instead. Again, all personal preference. Smashing team overall.

As for bench boost, maybe, just about.
