Which FPL players and teams top the xG tables?

Our latest Members article series, reviving an old Scout strand called Tales of the Expected, explores the latest expected goals (xG) data, assessing each side from an attacking and defensive perspective.

In addition, we’ll also check out the form players on show, asking if their recent output is sustainable.

Having last looked at these tables after Gameweek 19, it’s time to revisit them again, armed with the latest stats from the restart.

Only Premium Members are able to read these pieces, so sign up today to get full access not just to the editorial content but all of the other benefits, from hundreds of Opta stats to a transfer planner.

TEAMS

First up, let’s take a look at the minutes per xG data since the end of the World Cup to find out what changes, if any, have occurred at Premier League clubs.

MINS PER XG: GAMEWEEK 17-21

The top five are unchanged since last time, but Brighton and Hove Albion are up two places to sixth. The Seagulls’ tally of 14 goals from 8.06 xG is remarkable, and as the players become more familiar with Roberto De Zerbi’s playing style, it’s exciting to think what they could achieve in the second half of the season.

Liverpool, meanwhile, are in desperate need of goals, with just six in their five games from Gameweek 17 onwards. They’ve underperformed their xG by 3.40 in that time, with Darwin Nunez (£8.8m) culpable for a whopping 2.71 of that total.

As for Newcastle United, they have scored even fewer – four goals from 8.75 xG. No team has underachieved more in front of goal than the Magpies since the restart, with 12 of their 16 ‘big chances’ fluffed.

Nottingham Forest maintained their momentum by registering their eighth point from 15 on Saturday, which suggests they are turning their season around. After 22 new players arrived in the summer, Steve Cooper is finally transforming them into a cohesive unit, although they do need to become more clinical in the attacking third.

That applies to Chelsea too, but there are signs that they are moving in the right direction again under Graham Potter. The Blues have won the xG battle in four of their six games since the Premier League resumed, they are just lacking that bit of composure in front of goal. Maybe new arrivals Mykhailo Mudryk (£7.0m) and Joao Felix (£7.5m) can help on that front, with some very decent fixtures on the horizon:

Elsewhere, London rivals Tottenham Hotspur haven’t created much since the restart, while Crystal Palace’s issues in attack could be good news for owners of Luke Shaw (£5.2m) in Gameweek 22. The Eagles have had 64 shots since the restart, but just three of those efforts have been Opta-defined ‘big chances’.

Great WC last week, now comes the benching headache

    Pope
    SHAW Trippier Zinchenko (Bueno Estupinan)
    RASHFORD Saka Ode Mahrez Mudryk
    GNONTO Haaland Kane

1ft 2.5 ITB - If GW 22 goes ahead would you

Mahrez to Bruno to Mahrez gw23

    Bench:
    Gnonto or Kane

Would probably TC Rashford or just BB it? ( I know there are better times, but doing quite poorly but went up from 1.1 mill to 600K by being super aggressive)

Then another 2 in 25 as he's 8th attacker and you'll not have to use a transfer to get a complete 11

Are you confident Mudryk starts? I quite like the punt but you know he's coming from a winter break so I think Potter will build up his mins gradually. He's the one I'd bench for now

Even if Mudryk got an assist off the bench he'd still only be even with Gnonto's appearance points

    Thoughts on these transfers?

    A) Kane, Martial & Almiron ➡️ Nketiah, Bruno & Ferguson/Gnonto -4

    B) Martial & KDB ➡️ Nketiah & Bruno

Cheers all - think I have to play the Bench Boost sooner rather than later as I have no WC.

Don't fancy Haaland's DGW in 23 so TC might be played much later in the season.

    6. Ze_Austin
      • 5 Years
      1 year, 3 months ago

I think this is TC vs BB, so I'll broaden the scope a bit:

With the funds flying around this season, you're likely to have a good bench almost every GW. This means you can hit BB in a major DGW without needed a wildcard to prepare for it or thin the squad down after

With this in mind, it's an opportunity cost issue: I think you'll have many more BB opportunities, probably with double fixtures for 12 or so out of the 15. Also a lot of points on the bench over the second half of the season, but that's fine

I don't think we can be sure that there'll be many TC opportunities with fixtures +form as good as those Rashford has here, unless you're more inclined towards using the chip on Haaland. More on that on my long post in the previous page

So it comes down to this: I think you'll have many higher scoring benches, including in SGWs. I don't think there'll be many more promising TC opportunities: top form, high confidence, great fixtures, home games, extra midfield points. The only issue atm is that he's not Haaland, and Haaland's back to blasting teams away 😀

This tilts me towards Rashford TC, of these two options

      1. Ze_Austin
        • 5 Years

        *without needing a wildcard

My word, that got messed up in editing 😀

But I've used my 2nd WC so the opportunity to amend any issues that arise due to injuries, loss of form etc are harder to deal without taking significant hits. I'm pretty confident Ferguson will get decent minutes now but wouldn't be in a few GWs time. Same with Akanji too...

Once I have played the BB I am no longer chained to worrying about the depth of the squad and afford to let players rot on the bench.

I could almost deal with the bench being 10 points shy of Rashord (say bench scores 20 vs Rashford scoring 30) just to have it played and not need to steer any future changes towards non-playing options in the squad.

        1. Ze_Austin
          • 5 Years
          1 year, 3 months ago

Okay, there's a hesitance with your bench here, but I see it another way:

Having a good 15-man squad means you can save 1 FT in any random GW. If Haaland gets injured in the cup, I can still make my planned move of Salah to Bruno and be "forced" into playing Kane

If I don't like Almiron's form, I can bench him for Schär... And similar examples

Having a strong squad gives you a lot of flexibility, which then lets you make leisure moves or even early transfers

Where I'm going with this is... If Akanji and/or Ferguson gets dropped or someone gets injured, you'll be able to replace them easily with FTs because you're not relying on a particular XI as starters, letting you prepare for the mega BB with FTs

In isolation I'd say B. If this is TC versus BB, then I'd be tempted by A and hope for a DGW for BB.

B, but i'd still got for TC Rash this week and wait for a better BB opportunity, plenty of good cheap bench players

This WC team is tempting me...
Don't know if I'll do it though, as a -4 could bring me some of the players this week as well.

    Ederson - Ward*
    Trippier* - Shaw* - Gabriel - Botman* - Bueno
    Rashford* - Saka - Rodrigo* - Bruno - Mitoma*
    Nketiah - Haaland* - Kane*

(* are the players I already own)

What do you lot think? Got exact cash for this now.
I know it's "only" 6 changes, but I feel like I need to move soon to gain some ground.
Also, TC on Rashford this gameweek is a considerable option!

I'm not convince its worth when you've already 9 of those players, including 7 good options for both DGWs. A hit or two to get in more Arsenal and maybe Bruno, should be enough. Especially if the players you are taking out include highly owned options like Kepa, Martinelli, & KDB that could easily outscore those you are bringing in.

Yeah, I thinking of using my 2FTs this week to bring in Fernandes and an Arsenal attacker. Kane or KDB would fund that and I'd lose Almiron as well.

Next GW for a hit I'll move Fernandes and Toney to the other Arsenal attacker and bring back Kane/KDB.

Pep recent comments already suggested he will not start KDB depending on tactics and opposition which we have already seen with Alvarez starting ahead of KDB a number of times this season.

Reduces the concerns on the KDB to Bruno move this GW.

    Best Cancelo replacement?

    A) City Def - which? Stones?
    B) Double up Newcastle def despite the probable blank 25, Schar?
    C) Other?

Think I'd go C, and see who I thought had the best fixture in GW25.

Having Shaw and double Newcastle defence looks like a transfer waiting to happen got GW25. Newcastle have Liverpool and Man City either side of the blank also, so not sure you want to double up for them fixtures, no matter how poor Liverpool seem at the minute.

Thoughts are appreciated, would wait until closer to the deadline in case of any injuries/news:

    Current team:

    Arrizabalaga / Ward
Gabriel / Shaw / Trippier (Doherty / Bueno)
Martinelli / Salah / Rashofrd / Almiron (Bailey)
    Haaland / Kane / Darwin

    0.4 ITB and 2 FT
    Thoughts are:
    Salah > Bruno
    Bailey > Mitoma

And then bench either Almiron or Mitoma depending on feeling on the day! I know Doherty needs attention but feel like that can wait another week with the 3 playing defenders more or less nailed. Open to suggestions 🙂

Look good moves. Another option would be Almiron to Odegaard/Saka or Darwin to Eddie instead of the Bailey move

Are you using a FH in GW25? With the planned transfers you'd have 4 mids who will likely blank.

I'd probably do Salah to Fernandes this week and save a FT. Reassess for the DGW the week after, and use 2FTs or even take a hit on 3 transfers to shuffle your pack going forward.

Why not just Salah>Bruno in GW22, and then use 2FTs to top up on City assets ahead of their DGW? Your proposal would leave you with six outfield players who probably won’t have a fixture in GW25, so you’ll have to offload some of them earlier than you’d wish.

    Kepa
    Cancelo, Shaw, Trippier
    Rashford, KDB, Odegaard, Saka, Andreas
    Wilson, Haaland

    Subs- ward, mitrovic, castagne, bueno

    A) Cancelo, Andreas, Mitrovic --- Estupinan, Fernandes, Gnonto (-4)

    B) Mitrovic + KDB --- Nketiah + Fernandes

I'm eye up similar moves, only difference is Almiron for Andreas and undecided on a defender that doesn't blank in 25. Still can't decide between the two options

Itching to make a paid transfer.

    Kepa
    White Shaw Trippier
    Bruno Rashford Martinelli Almiron
    Haaland Kane Nketiah

    Ward Cancelo Andreas Bueno
    0FT, 3.0 ITB

A - Cancelo -> Lewis/Botman (-4). To play instead of White, who could again be hooked for Tomiyasu before 60 min
    B - Almiron -> Mitoma/Mahrez (-4)
    C - G2G

I'd say you're G2G for this GW. I wouldn't take a hit. Reassess next GW for the moves you want.

No need to take a hit to bench White. Subbing was situational, on YC v Rashford.
B/D maybe but C is also ok

    Kepa
    Trippier - White - Shaw
    KDB - Rashford C - Saka - Almiron - Andreas
    Haaland - Kane

    Ward - Perisic - Martial - Patterson

Are the obvious (but disgusting template) transfers here

Martial & KDB to Nketiah and Bruno?

So boring though. Not sure if I'm up to it but I need to dump that blacklisted Martial.

Looks a good player at Brighton. Then again so did Bissouma, and he doesn't look like half the player he was before he left.

    Kepa Ward

Trippier White Shaw Bueno B.Williams (Man United)

    KDB Martinelli Rashford Almiron Andreas

    Kane Haaland Mitrovic

1 FT 3.4 in the bank

    If double is confirmed:

    A) KDB-Bruno, Williams-Stones, Almiron-Odegaard (-8). Then next week Bruno-KDB
    B) Williams-Varane, Almiron-Odegaard (-4) and ignore Bruno
    C) Something else

I wouldn't take a hit for a City defender v Spurs when you already have 3 great options at the back this week. Maybe just Bruno & Øde for -4?

Arsenal going after Caicido or Brighton £55m.

Not sure if he's any good or another Bissouma.

    Brighton are getting rich

Hearing Arsenals 60m bid for Caicedo includes loaning back to Brighton to the end of season

    1. Arteta
      • 8 Years
      1 year, 3 months ago

They're fighting for the Europa League places and we're fighting for the title. There's a scenario in which he could help both teams for some time.

To let him stay in Brighton for 5 months would be a big decision. To loan him back is only making sense to me, if there was a clause in the contract, so Arsenal can recall him anytime in case Partey or Xhaka will sustain an injury. I would be all over that type of deal.

TC discussion. Rashford vs Haaland (in future)

Rashford form is solid, but he tends to score once per game. Haaland on the other side tends to score hattricks.

I would consider TC-ing Rashford only if im 100% sure that Haaland (ManC) wont get any DGW during season. But thats just me.

I made a similar point on Rashford TC and his ceiling. City will get more DGWs, they still have 2 games to reschedule

Also it would've been wise to include the whole quote. Sounds like Shaw will train and ETH will assess. I expect Malacia and AWB start at FB

You can bench 3 of those 5 so how about something like KDB and Mitro to Bruno and Nketiah this GW, then Almiron to Mahrez next GW
