Chip Strategy

It’s that time of the season again when Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers start to ponder various chip strategies, including the best time to Wildcard.

The answer, of course, is partly team dependent.

In fact, over 11% of managers inside the top 10k had already used the chip before Gameweek 22.

However, for the rest of us, some Wildcard windows do appear more appealing than others, which we’ll explore below.

GAMEWEEK 29

This should be a big Double Gameweek and one of the better opportunities to Wildcard or Free Hit.

It’s also worth noting an international break precedes Gameweek 29, allowing additional time to tinker and react to any injuries, which is always welcome.

Mikkel Tokvam’s excellent Transfer Algorithm had a go at predicting which teams could Double and Blank earlier this week (it was produced prior to Tuesday’s Double Gameweek 25 announcement), which you can see below.

If a team has a score of 2.00, it’s a guaranteed Double for that club, while a lower figure – like the one we see for Manchester City in Gameweek 28 – suggests there is a high chance of a Blank.

These are, of course, only predictions, but can prove very useful for planning purposes.

As you can see, a lot of teams can potentially Double in Gameweek 29; the only two who can’t are Arsenal and Everton.

However, things get complicated when we consider that some of those sides will also blank in Gameweek 28 due to clashes with the FA Cup quarter-finals.

At present, there are only four confirmed games scheduled to take place in Blank Gameweek 28, so dead-ending your team into this round of fixtures, then freshening up your squad the following week with a squad packed full of ‘doublers’ is appealing.

We’ll only know the full extent of Blank Gameweek 28 after Gameweek 25, when the FA Cup fifth round has taken place, but here’s a quick recap of where we currently stand.

GW28 Premier League fixtureStatusA blank will happen if the following occurs:
Arsenal v Crystal PalaceOn
Aston Villa v BournemouthOn
Brentford v LeicesterPossible blankIf Leicester beat Blackburn in the FA Cup fifth round
Brighton v Man UtdPossible blankIf Brighton beat Stoke in the FA Cup fifth round and/or if Man Utd beat West Ham in the FA Cup fifth round
Chelsea v EvertonOn
Liverpool v FulhamPossible blankIf Fulham beat Leeds in the FA Cup fifth round
Man City v West HamPossible blankIf Man City beat Bristol City in the FA Cup fifth round and/or if West Ham beat Man Utd in the FA Cup fifth round
Nott’m Forest v NewcastleOn
Southampton v SpursPossible blankIf Southampton beat Grimsby in the FA Cup fifth round and/or if Spurs beat Sheff Utd in the FA Cup fifth round
Wolves v LeedsPossible blankIf Leeds beat Fulham/Sunderland in the FA Cup fifth round

The main issue with this strategy is that you’ll not be able to use another chip in Gameweek 29. Now, this isn’t necessarily a problem, but if you still have your Bench Boost, you probably won’t want to use it until Double Gameweeek 34 or 37. As a result, it’s likely you’ll have a bigger squad, with more money left on your bench each week.

If using your Wildcard ahead of Gameweek 29, Free Hitting in Blank Gameweek 32 – which coincides with the FA Cup semi-finals – could form a nice chip strategy.

GAMEWEEK 33

Is there a strong case to go for Saka over Odegaard?

I feel GW25 captaincy is when Saka might trump Odegaard and not owning Saka could be damaging to OR.

Apologies for the not so humble brag, but | needed to share my excitement ahead of tonight's game.

I am lucky enough to have had a cracking start to the season, and a goal from Rashford and another attacking return from Rash or Bruno will give me a 3 figure OR. 😀

Cue 3-0 United with no Rash/Bruno involvement.

Who is likely to get more cleansheets up until 28?

    A. Ake

Looking ahead to next week. What would you do?

Bruno and Mitro to Mahreze and Kane? Or Martinelli to Saka

    2ft / 2.9 ITB

    Ward, Kepa
    Gabriel, Trippier, Bueno, Shaw, Schar

    Mitro, Haaland, Greenwood

I like the Bruno and Mitro out move. Both upgrades and you get the best city DGWer. Martinelli to Saka, despite being an upgrade, feels somewhat sideways especially in a week to stockpile DGW assets

Currently have 2 DGWers from Arsenal and City each. Growing concern is starting Ward's 1-pointers week in, week out, especially with 3 tough fixtures coming up. Best move here?

    A) No hit, just add 3rd DGWer like Odegaard or Mahrez
    B) -4 Hit, Odegaard/Mahrez + DGW keeper
    C) -4 Hit, combo of DGW mids like Odegaard & Mahrez in (Mount & Andreas out)

    Cheers!

    Ward
    Tripper - Shaw - Gabriel - Akanji
    Bruno - Rashford - Martinelli
    Haaland - Kane - Mitrovic

Toney to Nketiah is an easy one. I'd hold Bruno for the next two GWs. Andreas to Mahrez looks good to me too.

That would leave you with: Shaw, Trippier, Mitoma, Rash, and Bruno as blanks for GW25. You can save next GW, and then transfer out two of them and still have 11.

If your system is 3-5-2 then it's more easier to keep him but if your system is 3-4-3 then a lot of decent options for that fourth midfielder spot.(especially in dgw25,gw26).

I suppose, imm on 352 and is easier to keep him. He could easily outscore most in a SGW than most DGW’ers.

Is Saka worth the 1.3m over Ode when selling Martinelli?

The 1.3m could come in handy to up grade the likes of Mitro to Darwin for example. On the other hand Saka being on pens is tempting too.

    Thanks.

I think that depends on some circumstances. If you want a cap option from Arsenal Saka is perhaps the best option, but if that stops you from another move you'd want to make thenyou have to decide what's best for your side/tactics. I am doing Marti to Saka in that respect but i also have Nunez already.

It depends on the rest of your team.

Botman has good fixtures after 26 + plays DGW28, so wouldn't sell him. Bueno you can bench or bring in likes of EVE in 25.

Don't rate United's fixtures defensively (Shaw) after 25 but let's see how their form still is.

Toney could be sold, probably options for his spot.

    Kepa / Ward

White Shaw Trips ( Stones Bueno)

    Rashford Fernandes Almiron Martinelli (Andreas)

    Nketiah Kane Haaland

1FT - needs some help deciding shah to do here

    Bruno -> KDB/Mahrez?
    Martinelli -> Ode?

Feel like Im on the wrong side of nailed arsenal assets here but don’t keep getting swayed by the KDB/Mahrez double. Also have stones to deal with

I have Mahrez but not 100% I'd bring him in now. Minutes risk and to be back, plus CL starts in 24 and with easy have in 25 he might get rested when you need him to play

      Can’t do martinelli to Mahrez?

I can but Martinelli has two doubles coming up and Fernandes has blank. Be better to shift Bruno for the blank and have 2 X DGW players this week? I could possibly do matti to Mahrez and Bruno to Saka, might not be a bad shout for -4

I would see how Bruno goes tonight, he could score big before the blank

Martinelli now off form and may get fewer minutes

The -4 option is a good one imo

Would you bench one of Bruno or Mitoma and transfer in Nketiah?

If so, would you just transfer out whichever one you'd bench for Saka instead?

I'll be honest - not getting Saka/whoever if you have the choice for a DGW seems silly, especially given they also double in GW25.

I'd also be benching Mitoma. He is fantastic. Could be feisty as a 'derby' but just look at how badly CRY fared vs. Rashford & friends. Mitoma plays in same position as Rashford too...

      Quite the position you're in.

On 73 with Rashford(TC), Shaw and Varane. I'd be happy with 1-0 if Rashford is the scorer!

A repeat performance from Rashford (C), Bruno & Shaw would take me to 108

I'm on 89 with Rashford (TC), Fernandes & Shaw.

Given each of them getting just 2 points each would put me on 99, I'd feel a bit disappoint (from this one game) not to pass 100!

        you'll do it.

I had 7 players blank and I'm on 70 points with 3 playing tonight.

If only I'd somehow put Tarkowski and his 15 pointer in the first 11!!

I'll be on 98 if Bruno Rashford and Shaw simply make it to 60 minutes (and no bookings). One return for the tonne

Funny how rapidly the football pendulum can swing in English football.
