Here, two-time Indian FPL champion Lateriser talks about overthinking your decisions and the benefits of being open-minded.

The FFS Pro Pundits 34

A lot is going on in my head in terms of where I go with my team this week but I won’t cover that in this article. If you fancy reading that, you can just read this thread:

I fully expect my mind to change multiple times before the deadline and that is generally how indecisive I’ve been over the last couple of Gameweeks.

The indecisiveness has also led to over-obsession, if you like, where we’re constantly looking for small margins to find gains. The last couple of weeks have been a nice validation, where this overthinking has led to some significant gains.

GOING ABOVE AND BEYOND

Heading into Gameweek 23, I was contemplating whether to sell Anthony Martial (£6.4m) for Bruno Fernandes (£9.9m). This led to stalking, where I looked at every Manchester United training picture online to see whether Martial was around.

I was also trying to determine which kind of training session it was. Although embarrassing to admit, I’m fairly confident all of us are obsessive FPL managers at different levels, in terms of how deep we dive and how we let weird factors influence our decision-making.

FPL Gameweek 22 Scout Picks:

Anyway, the stalking and overthinking in the last hour ended with me making the move to Fernandes and also pushed me to Triple Captain Marcus Rashford (£7.3m) over Erling Haaland (£12.2m), a conclusion which led to a 30-point gain. It was a nice validation.

Another thing about it was that I went against my ‘gut’, instead making a calculated ‘head’ decision, something that isn’t easy for me as an FPL manager.

IT’S OK TO CHANGE YOUR MIND

Our minds constantly change and there is nothing wrong with having our thoughts evolve. I wanted to cite this specifically because, if you’ve said something but don’t really believe it the next day, it is fine to admit it and change your mind.

In fact, I was having the same conversation with my pod partner Zophar the other day, where I was pulling his leg for changing his opinion on Liverpool’s defence so quickly. He simply said that being stubborn is a hindrance to FPL managers and one should always be open-minded to everything.

The game is dynamic, moving at a faster pace than you realise, so it’s fine to think something one week and the complete opposite in the following week.

Generally, I’m a pretty decisive FPL manager but the last few weeks have been different. I’ve been contemplating some genuine 50-50 calls like the one earlier. No complaints, though, as it leads to me reading, watching and talking more about football and that’s something I love.

THERE’S STILL TIME FOR HUGE RISES

Another thing I wanted to touch upon is that, if you’re feeling downbeat about your season, I have seen a lot of managers recently rise from outside the top 1.5 million into the top 200k. The last two Gameweeks have been very kind to me too, jumping from 283k to 67k.

If you’re feeling like you’re on for a bad season, I just want to say that a couple of good weeks have the potential to give huge rank gains and there are many exciting differentials in the game right now.

There’s also the added benefit of seeing a significant number of chips already used by top 10k managers. 40% of them have already activated their Free Hit, 25% have done the Bench Boost, 83% have used Triple Captain and the Wildcard has 18% usage.

Knowing what is ahead of us in terms of Blank and Double Gameweeks, simply being tuned in will give managers great potential for huge gains. Looking beyond the top 10k, below is the overall chip usage:

  • 43% – Triple Captain
  • 30.44% – Free Hit
  • 20% – Bench Boost
  • 13% – Wildcard

Those numbers are much higher than I expected them to be, so I’m very optimistic about the rest of this season. So yeah, hang in there!

Also, for more discussion this week, we had the Deputy Editor of Fantasy Football Scout Tom Freeman join Zophar and myself on the FPL Wire.

    A rare cry for help

I was 50pts ahead in my mini leagues but by (drunken) mistake captained nketiah over haaland and didnt reverse the kdb-bruno transfer and am now only 20 ahead… thinking what do I do, leaning towards saving FT…

    3.5m ITB, 1 transfer

    Kepa (ward)
Shaw (LEI) / Estupinan (FUL) / Bueno (BOU) (trippier liv / white avl)
Fernandes (LEI) / Rashford (LEI) / Mahrez (nfo) / Martinelli (avl) (Andreas bha)
Nketiah (avl) / Kane (WHU) / Haaland (c) (nfo)

    Thinking:
    1) save
    2) nketiah - felix and next round get saka for bruno
    3) bruno for KDB

Any insights would be helpful, thank you

Insight #1: start drinking AFTER doing your FPL.

I like either 1 or 2-- 3 could be ok too if you are comfortable with both Mahrez and KDB. Not helpful I guess, haha. I brought in Felix for Mitro this week for free, and I am starting Bruno and Saka. Don't have Nketiah, Mahrez or KDB.

      I like option 2.
Saka better than Nketiah for 25 and think Villa keep it tight this GW.

I'm starting Mee and Estupinan, Bueno on bench, and will start 1/bench 1 of Shaw/Trippier. Hear me out.

Mee (CRY) - I love the chance for a CS here. 4 CSs in last 6, and the other 2 (vs Ars and Liv) conceded 1 each. Also had a goal 2 GWs ago. Meanwhile Palace are pretty bad, especially in atttack-- 1 goal in each of last 2 matches, then no goals in the 3 before that.

Estupinan (FUL) - 2 CS last 2 home matches, and 3 assists last 2 away. Fulham have been solid defensively but last 3 away score 0 goals total. So I like the chance for a CS here too, and decent chance of an attacking return as well.

    Now, Shaw vs Trippier

Shaw (LEI) - a CS last week vs Leeds but 0 in the 5 matches before that, inlcuding 3 at home. Leicester attack has been good lately, scoring 4, 4, and 2 in last 3. I don't see a CS here. 2 assists 0 goals for Shaw in last 6 matches. Some potential for attacking return.

Trippier (LIV) - CSs as far as the eye can see-- up until the last 2 matches. Conceded 1 each in those. Liverpool getting healthy with VVD, Jota and Firmino back in some capacity. Don't have a good feel for this match but can see Newcastle conceding. Trippier hasn't had an attacking return in 6 weeks.

Thank you for reading my essay lol. I'm currently on starting Shaw and benching Trips, but not super comfy with it. Any thoughts/advice? Cheers

      I agree with Mee
I disagree with Trippier as I think he should start because Liverpools tremendous xG numbers say nothing to me bec they have bad finishers. He was also very unlucky not to get returns lately and he is strong at home(even scored against ManCity)
Between Estupinan and Shaw you have 2 defs where the clean sheets are not guaranteed. I give BHA a bit higher chance of cs but it’s so close. I own Shaw so I start him atm. Maybe Leicester are still bad at set pieces so they concede from a Shaw assist

Never bench trippier. He’s not the best defender on the game purely for Clean sheets.

Yes it’s true but you already have nice def and useful for 25 so apart from Shaw to Badiashile (which I think isn’t worth) I wouldn’t consider anything else

Neither (James not in squad and wouldn’t be investing in Spurs) - either carry transfer or bring in Tarkowski

What’s your comment on Arsenal facing Emery? Also Martinez is the GK and Chambers may start if Mings out
    Early kick off
    Little rest
    No Partey
I can see the being exposed there

Would you do Patterson to Tarkowski on free pre price rise of just hold Patterson and see what news is next week?

I think you'd want Tarkowski anyway for the security of starts regardless

I only just read this above!

I've carried him for about 2 months so guess I'll just let start one of Bueno / White and re-assess next GW with 2FT?

I read that too, though did not watch any.

I think Arsenal concede hence why he is my 1st bench so thinking of leaving it as such.

Castagne has been a disaster for me.
Brought him in at the World Cup break, and he's since lost 0.3m.
