We assess the key Fantasy Premier League (FPL) talking points from Crystal Palace v Liverpool in our next Gameweek 25 Scout Notes article.

The numbers and graphics you see in this article are taken from our Premium Members Area, where you can access Opta player and team data for every single Premier League fixture.

DARWIN INJURY LATEST

Darwin Nunez (£8.8m) played no part in Liverpool’s drab goalless draw with Crystal Palace on Saturday evening, with the shoulder injury he had sustained a week earlier keeping him sidelined.

The Uruguay international was the most-bought FPL forward of Double Gameweek 25, attracting well over 900,000 new owners, and there are no guarantees that he’ll feature against Wolverhampton Wanderers in midweek, either.

Jurgen Klopp did sound quite positive when asked about his stricken striker shortly before kick-off at Selhurst Park.

“Darwin had the shoulder problem from the Newcastle game, worked out for the Real Madrid game but then got another knock there, felt it again and more.

“So there was no chance for today and hopefully he can be [available] in midweek again.” – Jurgen Klopp on Darwin Nunez, speaking before kick-off

But there was more caution from the Liverpool boss in his post-match press conference, with Klopp saying the Reds would “have to see how long” Darwin’s recovery would take.

“Darwin against Newcastle when he fouled Trippier… yeah, his shoulder, then it was OK with an injection against Madrid because there’s no structural damage, it’s very painful, but the day after the Madrid game he got another knock there and after the game he couldn’t move the arm at all. So, we have to see how long that will take but that was the reason for him, and Joe Gomez had a muscle [injury].” – Jurgen Klopp on Darwin Nunez, speaking after the match

Diogo Jota (£8.8m) took Darwin’s place on the left of the front three on Saturday evening, hitting the post with one of four attempts (a game-high total).

TRENT SUBBED EARLY

Another widely purchased Liverpool asset this week was Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.3m), who at least emerged from the Palace clash with six points.

The right-back was hooked after 70 minutes of the bore draw but Klopp explained after full-time that it was minute management, rather than an injury, that influenced his withdrawal. The Liverpool head coach’s comments also imply that Alexander-Arnold came close to not starting the match.

“It was just clear… Trent plays all the games for us and then we have to make [a decision] from time to time. We thought before the game already is it one too much for him or whatever. But then he started – that’s it. The reason was purely because of that and nothing else.” – Jurgen Klopp on Trent Alexander-Arnold’s substitution

“He was, for sure, in the few games we won he was one of the much, much, much, much better players. It is Trent Alexander-Arnold and if he is not performing, everybody is talking about it. When he is performing, nobody speaks about it apart from when he is involved in goals. He set up super goals in the last few games – Newcastle and I think Everton. He is OK, it is just the amount of games. We took him off and he has a day longer to rest and then he will be fine again.” – Jurgen Klopp on Trent Alexander-Arnold’s ‘form’

Klopp was grilled on Alexander-Arnold’s form and confidence because the defender had turned in another sub-par display at Selhurst Park, not that he was alone.

It’s points and not performances that we Fantasy managers are primarily interested in, of course, and the Liverpool right-back was deprived of a possible double-digit haul when his goalbound free-kick was inadvertently blocked by one of his own teammates, slack-jawed gawker Jordan Henderson (£5.3m). Mohamed Salah (£12.7m) would have claimed the assist for that strike, too.

Speaking of the Egyptian, he was one of the many Liverpool players to fall well short of their best. But even a substandard Salah can still get among the points, and there were fine margins separating a blank from a return at Palace, with FPL’s priciest player smashing the woodwork and seeing a big chance he created for Cody Gakpo (£7.8m) go begging.

LIVERPOOL’S DEFENCE

While owners of Alexander-Arnold can bemoan the attacking return that never was, they were lucky to get a clean sheet.

This was Liverpool’s third shut-out in as many Premier League matches but make no mistake, it’s been opposition profligacy to mostly thank for that.

Jean-Phillipe Mateta (£5.1m) and Marc Guehi (£4.4m) spurned gilt-edged opportunities on Saturday evening, with seven ‘big chances’ and 3.10 expected goals (xG) coming and going against Everton, Palace and ten-man Newcastle United in Gameweeks 23-25.

There’s little for Marcus Rashford (£7.2m) and Bruno Fernandes (£9.8m) to fear in Gameweek 26, when Manchester United head to Anfield.

PALACE NO PUSHOVERS, ZAHA LATEST

Much is being made of Palace’s eight-match winless run but they’ve exclusively faced top-half teams in that time and drawn five of them, with the attacks of Chelsea, Manchester United, Newcastle United, Brighton and Hove Albion, Brentford and Liverpool mustering only six goals between them.

The fixtures don’t get much easier before the March international break, with a Gameweek 27 double-header against Manchester City and Brighton likely to be a deterrent for FPL managers.

But it’s worth bearing in mind how stubborn they’ve been of late, when weighing up the captaincy credentials of Kaoru Mitoma (£5.3m) and Bukayo Saka (£8.5m) in Gameweeks 27 and 28.

It’s at the other end of the pitch where the Eagles’ problems lie: not one of their FPL forwards has scored a single goal in 2022/23.

Michael Olise (£5.4m) again caught the eye – he’s third among midfielders for chances created in the last six Gameweeks – but when you’ve got Mateta et al on the end of your crosses and passes, the assists probably aren’t going to flow.

Patrick Vieira could at least be boosted by the return of Wilfried Zaha (£7.2m) from injury next weekend, after the Ivorian winger made a comeback to training last week.

“When there are hamstring issues, you want to be 100% sure, you don’t want to take any risks.

“The best decision was to give him another week of training with the team and then he should be OK for the week after.” – Patrick Vieira on Wilfried Zaha

Thanks for the article Neale. So sounds like Darwin's out for Weds vs. Wolves. Don't shoulder injuries take a while to heal?

Yeah, doesn't sound *too* bad. They've obviously patched him up for the Real game when he wasn't 100% right and now this is the belated recuperation period that was needed on it.

My worry is that they want him fit and firing for the United game in GW26 so may opt to preserve him on Wednesday, too. Klopp's post-match comments were more cautious than his pre-match ones.

Yeah I. I guess it could be one of those where the aggravation made it worse than the original. Not 100% sure Liverpool can afford to target games in their current position. Arguably for a mid-table side they should target Wolves and anything they get Vs United is a bonus

If Darwin needed an injection just to play v Madrid that’s a worry. Even more so that he re-aggravated in that game. I believe these injuries take a while to heal if I’m not mistaken. Shoulder muscle injuries are tricky.

You'd hope for his sake it won't turn out the way that Traore or Rashford's injuries in recent times did. I get wanting him for the Madrid game but we've seen before how prolonged shoulder issues can become if players keep trying to play through them

I'd suggest they'll play him, but not at the expense of future PL games. Top 4 isn't far away (although Top 3 probably is) so they've surely got to target that. Bellingham not leaving Dortmund to go play in the conference league

Signing for Liverpool would be foolish. Look at the regression of Dorwin and Gukpo. Incredible. Bellingham will also regress there.

This seems unlikely, they just haven’t gelled.

Look at what Klopp did for VVD, TAA, Mane, Salah, Robertson and firminho in terms of development.

He’s a great coach, just needs a rebuild

There isn't any. That game against Newcastle was an outlier. Happens with every team. We wouldn't be picking any Arsenal if we would judge them based on how they okayed against Everton for example.

Morning guys. What’s the negatives for the wc27, fh28, bb29 strategy? Would make 32 tricky to navigate and arguably better to use BB in 34? Apart from that I don’t see too many other issues

        • Fantasy Football Scout Member

I guess main negative of FH28 is that the teams blanking in 28 will largely correspond to those blanking in 32 so if you're too loaded on them you won't have the FT between.

Thanks. Yes that does look tricky, esp as Brighton have Man City that week as they would’ve been nice holds if they avoid a blank in 32. A lot depends on Fulham Leeds in the cup but feel like I’m muddling through last few weeks and gone from 2k to 20k so been a bit of a disaster!

I'm curious why you think BB34 is better than 29..? Looks like a smaller DGW per Tokvam, and mostly the same teams. Much lower chance of Newcastle & Chelsea DGW (admittedly the latter aren't that appealing but the fixture in 28 makes owning 1-2 likely). Fulham, Spurs & City more likely but a City DGW doesn't really excite me much - think it lends itself more to TC than a triple up.

Thanks thats a good point. The main reason I had was basically due to Brentford. If wc in 27 I’d have 2 or 3 from them and their double isn’t great but saying that raya and Toney can still do something even in tough games (save points for raya at least). But budget def not an issue if going down the 27 wc as made one up and had 4m left in the bank! Whereas much more expensive players are doubling in 34 so might make it tricky….prob not much in the bb29 vs 34

I think Raya has well & truly proved himself fixture proof. Toney also has a good record in tough fixtures so I'm open to the idea of keeping him for 29 depending on the YC situation / GW28 fixture / form of Felix/Iheanacho/Watkins

Which city would you want? Will have haaland and can get Dias easily….not sure I want more City. GW32 would be the main issue for me, it’s whether I feel I can gain enough in the weeks leading up to that to make the early wc/fh worthwhile

Another aspect to consider is the international break between 28 and 29. You would have only one FT to compensate for any possible injuries on your BB week.

Would like to retain 2 Arsenal players for 29 though ideally. Nketiah + March/Mac would probably work better from a squad structure point of view but will have to see about his knock/performances. Also would prefer to retain Saka & Øde as my 2 Arsenal long-term

Lewis played 90 yesterday and received praise from the sky guys on commentary - although I don't know why as I always think he looks dodgy when I see him play. Does he keep his place? He was my planned transfer out this week but Im considering holding for a bit longer now and focusing my transfers on the attacking players from Brentford and Brighton

I’d be guessing on whether he keeps his place but I would focus on Brighton and Brentford now. He’s a nice price at least and limited options in defence anyway

      Does anyone feel the same?
EO indirectly has taken the spark out of FPL for me. Before, I never worried about other players, who I captained; only the points I got on the board. I never concerned myself about players I never owned. I now find myself watching Haaland and Saka hoping they play badly, or at least fail to register points because I have Salah captain. I think I need to take a deep breath and just start enjoying it. Buxger the consequences.
      Hard I know!

Absolutely. I haven't dealt with the Haaland permacap situation all that well, always tempted to consider other options. And benching him was partly performance-based, but partly overthinking EO & detesting the sight of a 'spy' in my team (on livefpl).

It’s true. The gamble against haaland is massive now as he’s normally close to 200% effective ownership in single gws. I did have a very high rank and think I made decisions based on fear/holding rank rather than playing my own game. Not worked out as gone from top 300 to 20k!

Just fielding opinion, but is anyone thinking of going without Haaland in GW29 considering the fact he is a single GWer and he faces Liverpool? I know ownership is a factor but I think the amount of points made from DGWers may compensate his potential absence from people's teams. Of course you have to make the right picks for this to have any credence.

Not really as few reasons….Liverpool aren’t very good, budget isn’t a factor as lots of cheap players double and the alternatives I wouldn’t fancy to outscore him even with a double

I'm not really thinking about it now but Haaland can get double figures in any SGW match. And this Liverpool? They are atrocious. He could steamroll them.

Also there's not a huge choice of viable forwards (2x good matches +capable of consistent scoring) for DGW29 really. Felix? Watkins? Toney?

Reckon it's fine to run Haaland plus 1-2 of them. But either way, fine with & fine without - especially as many won't captain.

Salah/Nketiah, Trent, Tark. Tough with keepers, but since Chelsea play Dortmund a few days after Leeds & could rest Silva/James (also considering what Leeds did to them earlier in the season), I'd just about side with Raya

Very nice. Bruno.F could outscore Salah before the BGW..

Wouldn’t have Salah near a WC team.

Are many of you undecided on your chip strategy? Too many options.

Yep - FA cup results are useful information so won’t be making any decisions until after that.

Planning Akanji to Estupinan which is a bit of a no brainer this GW and can re-assess next week.

If you're feeling depressed about this gw I would like to tell you that a rival of mine in my mini league who was 60 points behind me before this gw took a-12 before this gw for a triple Everton defence.

Which teams are likely to blank in GW28? United, Brentford, Brighton. Anyone else? I’m in dire straights and need to arrest my kid-season slide of red arrows

Arsenal, CP, Villa, bournemouth, chelsea, everton, forest and newcastle will play for sure. Rest of the games depending og FA-results.
